“Lei Feng a hero? Ha!” was the reaction from two young Chinese women. “He’s more of an example, a model.”

“Heeerrrro?” came the immediate
response, accompanied by an uneasy grimace.
“What a stupid question!” a five-year-old yelled his mind.
“Don’t you like the Monkey King? Tell uncle, he’s asking you.” His mother plied, trying to get an answer for us.
His mother extended an embarrassed smile, “He likes the Monkey King, for the cool moves.”
Monkey King, the main character from the classic “Journey to the West” has cool moves indeed. He can pull a fighting staff out his ear and a few hairs plucked off his head handily transform into a squadron of

er chin well hidden beneath the coiled layers of a scarf, the old woman repeated uncomfortably, “Who is my hero?” She stuttered and swayed indecisively on the cold street corner for a moment, then blurted, “I’m not educated! Go ask someone who’s more educated!”
But some people’s heroes took us by surprise.
“Me, myself and I” was an unlikely hero that appeared in our findings.
“I’m my own hero.” One man in his mid-twenties proclaimed. He then proudly pushed his thumb into his chest and proclaimed to be unemployed. His ability to support himself without a job was enough to
In Chinese, the word “hero” usually translates into yingxiong (英雄), a word for describing someone of superior talents and warrior strengths. But the same English word can also be interpreted into Chinese as someone of outstanding achievements, or a person with superhuman qualities, a sort of demigod. In fact, “hero” stems from the Greek word heros, which literally means “demigod.” “Hero” can mean many things, but the romantic notion of a hero should be universal (or so we thought). From Luke Skywalker to Spiderman, Winston Churchill to Martin Luther King, or even our own
Many female professionals, for example, admire CCTV host Yang Lan. One woman said about Yang, “She never stops challenging herself to improve her career and reach her goals.” The TV host has become a role model who represents the advancement of women in China.
humble parents, these are the role models we offered when asked the question, “Who is your hero?” Heck, we get excited about this kind of thing!
In China, we thought, who could beat Lei Feng, the acute personification of socialist values, a hero who captures the people’s hearts? Contemporary Chinese romanticize Lei Feng in the red nostalgia movement. His face adorns khaki bags and other hipster flare. To Westerners Lei Feng couldn’t have less than superhero powers. In one story, he dives to the depths of the Yangtze River. In the raging current he lays down support beams to start the construction of the first bridge over the Yangtze River.
The young, of course, like a little action. Kungfu stars Jacky Chan and Jet Li were most frequently mentioned; their older incarnation Bruce Lee, and his master, Yip Man, as well; athletes, like Liu Xiang also came up.
The boy continued to ignore the stupid question and jump around rowdily. He was happy to be out of kindergarten for the day; talking about heroes didn’t interest him.
Of nearly two hundred people we terrorized with the hero question, most looked up to someone they would consider a yingxiong. With a little nudging and prodding—and a lot of brow-knitting serious thought—respondents typically chose someone not all too surprising, given their age, career or lifestyle.

make him a hero. A retired worker seconded the thought.
Why does he consider himself a hero? “Inflation! Money! I live on 2000 RMB in monthly pension and my wife doesn’t have a job.”
The question threw her back, as it threw back many.
Our editors were scouring the streets of Beijing to find out the cultural equivalent of Superman and Michael Jordan in China. It was a bold attempt, if not a vain one. Winter was closing in and pedestrians couldn’t spare one frigid minute to indulge a prying writer’s curiosity. When they did stop to listen, the question, “Who is your hero?” left them grasping in perplexity.
Middle-aged men generally cite national heroes—revolutionary leaders—like Deng
Xiaoping and Sun Yat-sen. Sun garnered the praise, “He struggled for the freedom of the people, achieved success but remained modest. He is the father of the Nation of China,” was the praise we heard from one man.
