Experts note that an unhealthy lifestyle can put you at great risk of heart disease and stroke. So doctors urge us to eat healthy foods, get exercise, stop smoking and limit our alcohol intake. But there is something else you can do. And it is free and easy. Smile!
Dr. Chockalingam, a heart disease specialist in Columbia, advises his patients to smile. He says a smile may be one way to help your heart. "When we smile, the brain wiring changes. The chemicals that are released are more positive." He says smiling is the first step in fighting physical and emotional stress and its sometimes harmful effects on human health. This is not just New Age advice. Several studies support his opinion.
When you feel stressed or under pressure, your body releases many natural hormones (荷尔
蒙) including adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline increases your heart rate and blood pressure. Cortisol is the body's main stress hormone. It increases sugar in the bloodstream. If you are truly in danger, these hormones can help you. They are part of what we call our fight-or-flight response.
However, when we are stressed for a long period, these stress hormones are ever-present in our bodies. And that, medical researchers warn, may lead to health problems.
Researchers say the connection between stress and heart disease is still unclear. However, they claim that when people are stressed for long periods of time, they may have an unhealthy lifestyle, which can lead to health problems.
Dr. Chockalingam says a smile may be one way to help. He tells his patients to smile 20 times an hour. To some, that might seem like a lot of smiling. Or some might even feel foolish ... smiling for seemingly no reason. But a smile does not involve drugs. It is not invasive like a surgical operation. It is free and it has no bad side effects.
"Once people smile, they are relaxing. This relaxation directly lowers blood pressure, improves sugar levels in the blood. If we are smiling, we are breaking that link between stress and health." And it just may provide a little extra protection to everyone's heart health.
(1)Which of the following agrees with Dr. Chockalingam's opinion?
A. Smile has the same effects as laughter.
B. Smile can be used to take the place of medicine.
C. Smile is better than any healthy lifestyle to health.
D. Smile can make our body produce beneficial chemicals.
(2)What can we know about the mentioned stress hormones?
A. They can lower our blood pressure.
B. They will surely lead to heart diseases.
C. They can benefit us when we are in danger.
D. They will make us live an unhealthy lifestyle.
(3)Why does Dr. Chockalingam think smiling is helpful to our health?
A. It can make us relax.
B. It increases sugar levels.
C. It has little bad side effects.
D. It can happen for no reason.
(4)What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Thorough Analysis of the Causes of Heart Diseases
B. One Thing You Can Do Right Now to Help Your Heart
C. One Thing That Is Closely Connected with Stress Hormones
D. The Clear Connection Between Unhealthy Lifestyles and Heart Diseases
【答案】(1)D

3.阅读理解
In 2015, a man named Nigel Richards memorized 386, 000 words in the entire French Scrabble Dictionary in just nine weeks. However, he does not speak French. Richards' impressive feat is a useful example to show how artificial intelligence works —real AI. Both of Richard and AI take in massive amounts of data to achieve goals with unlimited memory and superman accuracy in a certain field.
The potential applications for AI are extremely exciting. Because AI can outperform humans at routine tasks—provided the task is in one field with a lot of data —it is technically capable of replacing hundreds of millions of white and blue collar jobs in the next 15 years or so.
But not every job will be replaced by AI. In fact four types of jobs are not at risk at all. First,
there are creative jobs. AI needs to be given a goal to optimize. It cannot invent, like scientists, novelists and artists can. Second, the complex, strategic jobs —executives, diplomats, economists —go well beyond the AI limitation of single-field and Big Data. Then there are the as-yet- unknown jobs that will be created by AI.
Are you worried that these three types of jobs won't employ as many people as AI will replace? Not to worry, as the fourth type is much larger: jobs where emotions are needed, such as teachers, nannies and doctors. These jobs require compassion, trust and sympathy —which AI does not have. And even if AI tried to fake it, nobody would want a robot telling them they have cancer, or a robot to babysit their children.
So there will still be jobs in the age of AI. The key then must be retraining the workforce so people can do them. This must be the responsibility not just of the government, which can provide funds, but also of corporations and those who benefit most.
(1)What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To mention Nigel's feat.
C. To stress the importance of good memory.
D. To suggest humans go beyond AI in memory.
(2)Which of the following best explains "outperform" underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Be superior to
B. Be inferior to
C. Be similar to
D. Be related to
(3)Which of the following jobs is the most likely to be replaced?
A. The writer.
B. The shop assistant.
C. The babysitter.
D. The psychologist.
(4)Which of the following suggestions can the author give about job replacement of AI?
A. Limit the application of AI to a certain degree.
B. Get more support from the government.
C. Apply for the donation from companies.
D. Upgrade people's professional skills all the time.
【答案】(1)A
(2)A
(3)B
(4)D

4.阅读理解
Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you'll have no trouble answering these questions.
Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child's day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb(麻木的)to new stimulation(刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.
The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring.
Later they all admitted they'd felt cold water at first.
Another block to awareness is the obsession(痴迷) many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, a "ruby- crowned kinglet" and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.
The pressures of "time" and "destination" are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what's around them. I asked them what they'd seen. "Oh, a few birds," they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.
Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.
(1)According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more .
A. anxious to do wonders B . sensitive to others' feelings
C. likely to develop unpleasant habits
D. eager to explore the world around them
(2)What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3?
A. To avoid jumping to conclusions.
B. To stop complaining all the time.
C. To follow the teacher's advice.
D. To admit mistakes honestly.
(3)The bird watchers' behavior shows that they .
A. are very patient in their observation
B. are really fascinated by nature
C. care only about the names of birds
D. question the accuracy of the field guides
(4)Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey?
A. The natural beauty isn't attractive to them.
B. They focus on arriving at the camp in time.
C. The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.
D. They are keen to see rare birds at the destination.
(5)In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should .
A. fill our senses to feel the wonders of the world
B. get rid of some bad habits in our daily life
C. open our mind to new things and ideas
D. try our best to protect nature

5.阅读理解
I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals for two elderly women in my community. Both had died "full of years", as the Bible would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon.
At the first home, the son of the deceased(过世的)woman said to me, "If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It's my fault that she died." At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, "If only I hadn't insisted on my mother's going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride, the sudden change of climate, was more than she could take. It's my fault that she's dead."
You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course —keeping Mother at home, putting off the operation —would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens. That leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds.
The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believing that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.
A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to his tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people
change him. Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.
(1)What is said about the two deceased elderly women?
A. They lived out a natural life.
B. They died of exhaustion after the long plane ride.
C. They weren't used to the change in weather.
D. They died due to lack of care by family members.
(2)The author had to conduct the two women's funerals probably because .
A. he wanted to comfort the two families
B. he was an official from the community
C. he had great pity for the deceased
D. he was minister of the local church
(3)People feel guilty for the death of their loved ones because .
A. they found the funerals unsatisfactory
B. they believed that they were responsible
C. they had ignored the natural course of events
D. they didn't know things often turn in the opposite direction
(4)People have been made to believe since babyhood that .
A.everybody should try to meet others' needs
B. life and death is an unsolved mystery
C. every story should have a happy ending
D.their wishes are the cause of everything that happens 【答案】(1)A

6.阅读理解
WISH YOU WERE MORE CREATIVE?
I want to ask you a favor. I have a pair of pants. Tell me: How many different ways can I put a pair of pants to use? Now imagine you're an architect. Same question. Now imagine you're Bill Gates. A scuba diver. A medieval knight. You still have the pants. What alternative uses come to mind?
What you just practiced--the conscious act of "wearing" another self-is an exercise that, according to psychiatrist SriniPillay, MD, is essential to being creative.
One great irony (讽刺) about our collective addiction to creativity is that we tend to frame it in uncreative ways. That is to say, most of us marry creativity to our concept of self: Either we're "creative" or we aren't, without much of a middle ground. "I'm just not a creative person!" a discouraged student might say in art class, while another might blame her talent at painting for her difficulties in math, making a comment "I'm very right-brained."
Dr.Pillay, an assistant professor at Harvard University, has spent years overturning these ideas. He believes that the key to unlocking your creative potential is to challenge the stereotyped (陈词滥调的) advice that urges you to "believe in yourself." In fact, you should do the opposite: Believe you are someone else.
He points to a study showing the impact of stereotype on one's behavior. The authors, psychologists Denis Dumas and Kevin Dunbar, divided their college student subjects into two groups, instructing one group to think of themselves as "eccentric poets" and the other to imagine they were "rigid librarians". The researchers then presented them all with ordinary objects, including a fork, a carrot, and a pair of pants, and asked them to come up with as many different uses as possible for each one. The former group came up with the widest range of ideas, whereas the latter had the fewest.
These results suggest that creativity is not an individual characteristic but a "product of context and perspective". Everyone can be creative, as long as he or she feels like a creative person.
Dr. Pillay's work takes this a step further: He argues that simply identifying yourself as creative
is less powerful than taking the brave, creative step of imagining you are somebody else. This exercise, which he calls psychological Halloweenism, refers to the conscious action of "wearing" another self. An actor may employ this technique to get into character, but anyone can use it. According to Dr. Pillay, it works because it is an act of conscious unfocus, a collection of brain regions that spring into action when you're not focused on a specific task or thought. Most people spend nearly half of their days in a state of "unfocus." This doesn't make us lazy; it makes us human.
Imagining yourself in a new situation, or an entirely new identity, never felt so productive. You're making yourself more creative, and you're giving yourself permission to do something you'd otherwise feel guilty about.
(1)What's the function of the questions in paragraph 1?
A. To lead in the topic. B . To make a comparison.
C. To state an opinion. D . To ask a favor.
(2)The study led by Denis Dumas and Kevin Dunbar proves
A. creativity is an individual characteristic
B. librarians are more creative than poets
C. ordinary objects can improve creativity
D. your creativity is determined by yourself
(3)According to Dr. Pillay, Halloweenism works because .
A. it is an act of unconscious focus
B. certain brain areas begin to act together
C. people are in a state of laziness
D. all actors employ this technique
(4)If you want to be more creative, you are supposed to .
A. focus on a specific task
B. believe in your own talent
C. pretend to be someone else
D. turn to be right-brained
【答案】(1)A

每个人都可以有创造力,只要他或她觉得自己是一个有创造力的人。

也就是说一个人的创造力是取决于自己的。

故选D。

3)考查推理判断。

根据第七段中的”According to Dr. Pillay, it works because it is an act of conscious unfocus, a collection of brain regions that spring into action when you're not focused on a specific task or thought.

How do you notice a child genius (天才)? Gifted children tend to share three characteristics.
First, they develop skills at a very young age. Mozart began composing music when he was just five years old.
Second, they are self-starters. Srinivasa Ramanujan was building complex formula (公式)before he'd even been taught basic mathematics.
Third, gifted children can be crazy about their interests. For William James Sidis, a writer, had collected hundreds of street car models and had learned eight languages by the time he was eight. He was accepted at Harvard University at the age of 11.
They would all have been good members for Mensa, an international society for people with the highest IQs. Its youngest member is just two years old. But there can be disadvantages to being so clever. Members of American Mensa are three times more likely than the general public to suffer from allergies (过敏) or depression (抑郁), and they are almost six times more likely to struggle with anxiety.
These are just some of the physical and emotional problems that gifted children in particular may face.
Noticing those children is important, but many of them are being missed. To find out gifted children, you actually have to look for them in all places. The benefits can be huge when those "lost Einsteins" are found.。
