Shundagarh is a village on India’s east-

hearted old man, whose name was Jalpur, farmed two small fi
elds on the very edge of these hills. From his fields he could s ee the fishing boats that traveled up and down the coast. He c ould see the children playing on the sands; their mothers was hing clothes on the flat stones where the Shiva River flowed i nto the sea; and their fathers landing the latest catch or repairi ng nets and telling stories that had no end.
All Jalpur owned in the world were the clothes he wore day in and day out, the terrible hut that he slept in at night, a few tool s and cooking pots – and his fields. The corn that he grew wa s all that made life possible. If the weather was kind and the h arvest was good, Jalpur could live happily enough – not well, but happily. When the sun was fierce, and there was little rain or no rain ,then he came close to the line
between life and death.
Last year the weather had been so kind, and the harvest pr omised to be so good, that Jalpur had been
wondering whether he could sell all that he had and live with h is son farther up the coast. He had been
thinking about doing this for some years. It was his dearest wi sh to spend his last days with his son and hiswife. But he wou ld go only if he could give; he would not go if it meant taking f ood out of the mouths of his grandchildren. He would rather di e hungry than do this.
On the day when Jalpur decided that he would harvest his cor n, sell it, and move up the coast, he lookedout to the sea and saw a huge wave, several kilometers out, advancing on the c oast and on the village of
Shundagarh. Within ten minutes everyone in Shundagarh wo uld be drowned. Jalpur would have shouted,
but the people were too far away to hear. He would have run down the hill, but he was too old to run. He was prepared to d o anything to save the people of Shundagarh, so he did the o nly thing that he could do:
he set fire to his corn. In a matter of seconds the flames were rising high and smoke was rising higher.
Within a minute the people of Shundagarh were racing up the hill to see what had happened. There, in the middle of his blac kened cornfield, they found Jalpur; and there they buried him. On his grave, they wrote the words: Here lies Jalpur, a man w ho gave, living; a man who died, giving.

B. He only depended on good weather and harvest for survival.
C. The villagers kept taking his corn.
D. He had too many chi ldren to feed.
23. What did Jalpur do when he saw the huge wave?
A. He ran down the hill to tell the people.
B. He screamed loudly to get the villagers’ attention.
C. He set his corn on fire so the people of Shundagarh would leave the beach.
D. He stood still, not knowing what to do.

Scientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals(晶体)that could be 50,000 years old.
The organisms were found in a hot, but beautiful cave syste m in Naica,Mexico. These ancient life
forms can be seen only with a microscope. Penelope Boston ,who leads the Astrobiology Institute at
NASA,the space agency of the United States,
says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron.
She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the A merican Association for the Advancement
of Science. If the findings are confirmed,
they will show how microbes can survive in extreme condition s.
Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were foun d in the underground area. The genetic
structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from th ose of their nearest relatives.
The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners
began working in the caves,
the area was separated from the surface and the outside worl d. Some of the
caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Eur ope's Middle Ages. There are crystals
covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The
clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs(病菌)or other damage. Boston said the researchers
could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they ha d to go to a room that was 38 degrees
Celsius to cool down.
NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week's
Announcement, So scientists could not say much about the fi ndings. But Norine Noonan,a biologist
with the University of South Florida, said she believed them." Why are we surprised?"Noonan asked."As a biologist,I would say life on Earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful."
Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside cav es in other countries, such as Ukraine
and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossibl e to kill.Boston said they show how difficult
life on Earth can be.
32. The existence of the ancient microbes relies on_____.
A. surrounding insects
B. diverse plants
C. eating miner als
D. absorbing air
33. What can we infer about the caves in Naica from the pass age?
A. The temperature in the caves is quite low.
B. The caves have been explored since they were formed.
C. The walls are covered by crystals.
D. The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to.
34. What is the biologist Norine Noonan's attitude towards the findings?
A. Neutral.
B. Positive.
C. Doubtful.
D. Indifferent.
35. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. Living organisms bring hope to scientific research.
B. Scientists Discover 50,000-year-
old"super life" in Mexico.
C. Microbes show great power to survive in terrible conditio ns.
D. Caves provide living environment for living organisms.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

he set fire to his corn. In a matter of seconds the flames were rising high and smoke was risi ng higher.
Within a minute the people of Shundagarh were racing up the hill to see what had happened. There, in the middle of his blackened cornfield, they found Jalpur; and there they buried him. On his grave, they wrote the words: Here lies Jalpur, a man who gave, living; a man who die d, giving.
