六、阅读理解
文章大意:这是一篇说明文。

文章主要说明了经过试验发现,人工智能在地震预测方面大有前途,并给出详细的例子。

13. In Japan, the new year began with disaster as a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula (能登半岛) on the country’s western
edge on Monday. More than 2,000 active fault lines (断层线) lie beneath Japan, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
Many scientists have long considered earthquake forecasting to be impossible. But given recent improvements in artificial intelligence, some researchers have been studying whether that could change.
Last fall, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin increased such hopes for earthquake prediction with a seven-month trial in China. In all, the algorithm (演算法) successfully forecast 14 earthquakes, each within about 200 miles of its actual epicenter (震中). Meanwhile, it missed one quake and predicted eight that never happened. The trial was part of an international A.I.-design competition, one of a few such events held in recent years to advance earthquake prediction technologies.
Sergey Fomel, a geoscientist at UT Austin and a member of the research team, says in a statement. “We’re not yet close to making predictions for anywhere in the world, but what we achieved tells us that what we thought was an impossible problem is solvable in principle.”
Additionally, machine learning could help detect hidden patterns in data or collect more data to better inform earthquake forecasting, Hutchison writes for MIT Technology Review. For example, some researchers are showing how A. I. might use recordings from a specific seismic site to anticipate an earthquake’s magnitude. One team has built and trained neural networks to predict where aftershocks may occur after an initial strike.
And others are using machine learning to identify and extract seismic waves—the vibrations that spread through the earth during tectonic activity (构造活动)—from other noises in the ground.
1. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A.To explain a concept.B.To introduce a new topic.
C.To supply a summary.D.To provide an example.
2. What made some researchers optimistic about the earthquake forecasting?
A.The recent progress in theories.B.The use of traditional methods.
C.The increasing number of earthquakes.D.The advancements in artificial intelligence.
3. What do we know from the third paragraph?
A.The trial was conducted by Chinese.B.The algorithm was totally successful.
C.A. I. shows promise in earthquake prediction.D.The A. I. competition only focused on earthquakes.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Japan’s Vulnerability to Earthquakes B.Helper in Predicting Earthquakes—A.I.
C.The Impossibility of Earthquake Prediction D.International Efforts to Predict Earthquakes
文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,作者通过自己的经历来说明医疗保险没有对错之分,应该选择适合自己的。

14. I’ve had private health insurance my entire life. My parents were advocates of it and insisted I maintain my insurance after I left home. To be honest, I’d never really thought about it until I married and started a family of my own.
Pregnant with our first child, health insurance afforded me the doctor of my choice and a private room in the hospital of my choice. Many of my friends chose the public system and, although discharged from hospital (出院) much earlier, were provided daily home visits from a midwife (助产士) in the days following birth.
I’m happy to say all our babies were delivered safe and healthy. And while I have no regrets about “going private”, it wasn’t cheap despite my health insurance. My friends, on the other hand, paid nothing.
It wasn’t until my children turned one year old that I began to question whether health insurance was worth the monthly expense.
On the few occasions when the kids needed emergency care, we were referred to a new public hospital nearby and received first-class treatment. At that point we began to wonder if the money we were spending on private health cover could be better used elsewhere. Before I cancelled our insurance, though, I was diagnosed with cancer and that changed everything.
Thanks to my health insurance, the time between diagnosis and my first surgery was less than a week. I could recover in my own hospital room and know the team of specialists who were caring for me would be the same throughout my journey. Ten years later, they still are.
Other cancer survivors I’ve befriended along the way went public with their treatment and have no regrets either, which leads me to this conclusion: there’s no right or wrong when it comes to health insurance. I’ve kept it all these years because I like having peace of mind that my family will receive the treatment they need, when they need it. There are pros and cons for both, and only you can decide what best suits your situation.
1. What did the author think of private health insurance before her marriage?
A.It wasn’t cheap.B.It was far from enough.
C.It didn’t affect her much.D.It indeed gave her peace of mind.
2. What happened to the author’s friends choosing the public system?
A.They had harder deliveries.B.They spent less time in hospital.
C.They had weekly home visits from a midwife D.They were not well cared for after childbirth.
3. What did the author plan to do before she got cancer?
A.Get money to cover medical expenses.B.Maintain her private health insurance.
C.Use her insurance money somewhere else.D.Do something to change the public system.
4. What’s the author’s attitude to insurance now?
A.Choose your best fit.B.Buy private insurance if you can.
C.Keep both public and private insurance.D.Spend money carefully when it comes to insurance.

16. Water equals life. This is true for people, animals, and plants. Even though water covers 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, not all of it is safe to drink. In fact, less than three percent is actually freshwater. Now, scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge may have developed a way to change that. They have developed a suitcase-sized desalination (脱盐) device, powered by a small portable solar panel that can be used in remote places to produce clean drinking water.
Most commercially available portable desalination units use filters (过滤器) that require high-pressure pumps to push the water, which makes them huger and less energy efficient. The filter-less MIT device will allow it to be used in remote or resource-limited places like small islands, ships, and even for emergency use. Requiring no filters, this device uses electrical power to remove salt and other particles — including bacteria and viruses — from the saltwater. This reduces the need for constant maintenance.
The new desalination unit needs less power than a cell phone charger and works using two types of electrical fields to filter the saltwater. But best of all, it was designed to be used by ordinary people, not engineers. In fact, the device only has three buttons, one to power the device, one to start it, and one to stop it.
What this means is that the portable unit can be used in places with limited resources. Now, the cost is still too high, but Y oon, a member of the research, hopes that it can be reduced to make it affordable for most people.
The researchers are still working on a final design that could use cheaper materials and a new prototype (原型) could be ready soon. This small but mighty desalination unit may be the key to bringing safe water to a thirsty world.
1. What can we learn about the desalination device from the first paragraph?
A.It’s low-budget.B.It’s low-carbon.
C.It’s high-quality.D.It’s high-profit.
2. Compared with commercial ones, what advantage does the MIT device have?
A.It can be used in the heavy industry.
B.It can be operated by remote control.
C.It can remove salt and other particles by filters.
D.It can cut down the cost of equipment maintenance.
3. Why does the author mention the three buttons of the device?
A.To show that the device is simple to operate.
B.To introduce the target users of this device.
C.To illustrate the charging mode of the device.
D.To present the design principle of the device.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?

文章介绍了天文学家通过美国宇航局的哈勃太空望远镜发现了有史以来最远的恒星。

18. 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Space scientists say they have identified the most distant star ever recorded. Astronomers made the discovery with the Hubble Space Telescope
1 (operate) by the American space agency NASA. Researchers estimated the star was 50 to 100 times the mass of the sun, and
2 (million)
of times brighter than the sun.
It takes billions of years for the light from distant stars 3 (reach) Earth. The team says the star’s light 4 (believe) to have traveled for
12.9 billion years before arriving in the planet. This means the star would have existed when the universe was about seven percent of 5 (it)
current age. A member of the research team, Brian Welch, called the 6 (extreme) hot and bright star Earendel, 7 means the morning star or the rising light.
“We definitely just got lucky. Although scientists on Earth can now see its light, Earendel itself surely no longer exists. This is 8 such huge stars have short lives. The star probably existed for a few hundred million years before 9 (die) in an explosion,” Welch said. “Hubble has
observed the light from the galaxy that dates back 10 about 400 years after the Big Bang,” he added.。
