13、Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C.to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are
right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.
Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s tw o hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the left hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.
No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their m ain brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he / she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with. Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.

On the first day of a new term, 128 students were sent home for wearing the wrong clothes. There are altogether l, 200 students in the school. Usually only 20 students break the school dress rule every day. So the headmaster Theresa Mayerik said it was the worst new term she had seen.

16、To many students, joining social media “circles” (朋友圈) is now more important than making new friends in real life. And it’s easy. If you have a mobile phone, you can download many things such as Sina Weibo, QQ and WeC hat. “I love to check my friends’ updates (更新). I also enjoy news and humor shared on social media,” said Wang Wei, 14, from a middle school in Shenzhen. While enjoying these, Wang distances himself from real life. “I love playing the plane-shooting game o n WeChat, but have no interest in playing chess with my classmates,” said Wang.
Deng Yunyun, 14, from Xuhui Middle School in Shanghai, said that social media has influenced their normal life. Last month, his school held a basketball match, and a student hurt his leg. Instead of giving him some help, students were busy with updating WeChat blogs about the accident. “I think they need to learn to balance their real and online lives, and what worries parents and teachers a lot is safety.” said Deng.
“Many students are happy to tell their interests and personal information to their social media ‘friends’. And this could bring them danger,” said Miss Wang, a teacher from a Shenzhen middle school. “For example, the use of WeChat’s shake-shake allows users to connect to other users nearby. Also police warn about the risks of making friends in this way.”

17、 A dragonfly, only an inch and a half long, appears to be animal world's best long distance travelerflying thousands of miles overoceans as it moves from continent to continent----- according to a newly published research.Biologists who lead the study say the evidence is in the genes. They found that populations of this dragonfly, called Pantala flavescens, in Texas, eastern Canada, Japan, Korea, India, and South America, have genes so similar that there is only one likely explanation. Obviously these dragonflies are traveling distances that are quite long for their small size, breeding with each other, and creating a common gene pool. But how do dragonflies from different continents manage to meet and breed? Ware says it appears to be the way their bodies have evolved. For example, they increased surface areas on their wings that enable them to use the wind to carry them.
Dragonflies, in fact, have already been found crossing the Indian Ocean from Asia to Africa. "They are following the weather," says Daniel Troast. "They're going from India where it's dry season to Africa where it's wet season, and they do it once a y ear.”
Wetness is important for Pantala, and that is why they would take such a dangerous trip. Though many will die on the route, as long as enough make it, the species survives. For the moment, the details of this wonderful
insect trip are an educated best guess. Much more work is needed to be done. Ware and Troast hope that
scientists can work on figuring out those routes.

A.Wet weather. B.Warm places. C.Dry environment. D.Enough sunshine.

19、In recent years, many cities in China have been hit by smog frequently, which has aroused great concern among people.
Smog has a bad effect on people’s health. Many people, children and the old in particular, suffer from illnesses caused by smog. Consequently, citizens are warned not to go out without wearing masks.
How does it come about? Scientists have found that it is human activity that has caused this. The poisonous matters in the air mainly come as a result of people’s burning coal, driving cars, industry production and so on.
What should we do to stop the situation from worsening? First, cleaner fuels for cars and stricter emission standards for factories are of vital importance. Second, for us individuals, living a green life like going to work or school by public transport is a good choice. Also planting more trees to increase green areas is necessary. I believe every contribution counts. Only if we work together will smog weather disappear completely.。
