Sliding Rock
A popular place to cool off during those hot North Carolina summers, Sliding Rock waterfall is located in the Pisgah National Forest in Transylvania County. 36-year-old Juan Dual likes to joke that he’s empty inside. Juan’s story began when he was only 13. It was then that he was diagnosed with a terrible disease, which left him with a 99.8% chance of developing cancer of the digestive system. At age 19, right after finishing high-school, Juan underwent a tough operation to take away his colon and rectum. Sadly, it was only the beginning. By age 28, Juan’s disease had affected his stomach and gallbladder so he had to go under the knife again.
Having just recovered from several serious surgeries, Juan Dual decided to accept the invitation of some friends of his parents and travel to Japan. It was there that things started to change for the better. He didn’t speak a word of Japanese, so he spent most of his time walking his dog. One day, the dog pulled harder, and Juan realized that he was still able to jog, and he started to do just that.
Months later, he found himself working in a small, peaceful town in England. There was little in terms of entertainment, but the town was surrounded by hills, so he devoted even more of his time to running. He befriended some like-minded folks and told them what he’d been through, and they seemed amazed at the fact that he was still alive, let alone that he was pushing himself to exercise. That’s when the idea of focusing on motivating others took root in his mind.
With the help of Pepa, a nutritionist, Juan Dual slowly relearned how to eat to keep his energy level high enough to sustain him during physical activity. Eight months after his last operation, he finished the Barcelona half marathon in two hours. He then started training for mountain running and ultra-marathons.
4. Why does Juan Dual say he is empty inside?
A. Because he has no desire for anything.
B. Because he doesn’t have much knowledge.
C. Because he always suffers from great hunger.
D. Because many of his organs have been removed.
5. What made Juan Dual aware that he could still run?
A. His parents’ support.
B. A walk with his dog.
C. The idea of challenging himself.
D. His quick recovery from surgeries.
6. When did Juan Dual decide to inspire others with his story?
A. After finishing the Barcelona half marathon.
B After being introduced to a nutritionist named Pepa.
C. After sharing it with his friends in an English town.
D. After making friends with people with similar sufferings.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Juan Dual?
A. Ambitious and intelligent.
B. Inspiring and responsible.
C. Unfortunate but determined.
D. Confident but stubborn.
C
The measurable threat to the environment has been worsened by the spread of COVID-19 that increases the need for plastic protective equipment. Most plastic is made from fossil fuels. Millions of tons of greenhouse gas are released from the development of these resources and plastic production and burning.
The end life of plastic is just worrisome. Less than 10% of the plastic produced has been recycled. Even more of it has been burned. But the vast majority of plastic has been buried inland, and it is increasingly polluting the environment. We hear mostly about ocean plastic and the harm done to sea creatures that mistake plastic bags and bits for food. But microplastic is even more worrisome. Plastic doesn't break down biologically but instead breaks down into tiny particles(a very small piece of something), which have been found in every corner of the planet, on land and in the air, in drinking water and food sources.
Yet the public has not given this global environmental disaster the attention it requires. Instead, they have viewed single-use plastic—which makes up about 40% of plastic used each year—as a litter issue that can be solved through better recycling and waste management. That attitude must change because the recent global breakdown of the market for recycling has made it clear that it has never been, nor ever will be, able to keep up with plastic trash use.
California has been the forerunner of plastic waste reduction—it was the first state to ban single-use plastic bags and may be the first state to transform the way goods are packaged. The state also came close to passing an act which would have required that products sold in plastic packaging in the state have a proven recycling rate of 75% by 2032. California, though influential, can't solve this crisis alone. The US has long been producing a great amount of plastic trash and it should engage in reducing the use of plastic as well.
8. Why does the author mention the release of greenhouse gas in paragraph 1?
A. To show the harm of plastic
B. To warn of the climate change.
C. To call for the development of fossil fuels.
D. To highlight the importance of plastic equipment.
9. What's the author's attitude towards the public opinion on single-use plastic?
A. Favorable.
B. Tolerant.
C. Curious.
D. Opposed.
10. What's California's role in reducing plastic waste?
A. A pioneer.
B. A failure.
C. An objector.
D. A predictor.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Microplastic Products Are Harmful
B. Waste Recycling Is an Urgent Matter
C. Plastic Waste Pollution Is a Wake-up Call
D. Global Environmental Disasters Are Increasing
D
When I was a kid, my mom set aside some breakfast food for supper every nowand then. I remember one night after a long, hard day at work, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and a plate of extremely burnt biscuits on the table. I waited to see if my dad would get annoyed.
All my dad did was to reach for the biscuits, smile at my mom and ask me how my day at school had been. I don't remember what I told him that night but I do remember watching him add butter and jelly on that ugly burnt biscuit and ate every bite of that thing. He never made a face nor uttered a word about it!
When I rose from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for overcooking the biscuits and I will never forget what he said, “Honey, I love burnt biscuits every now and then."
Later that night, I went to say good night to my daddy, and I wondered if he really liked his biscuits burnt. He wrapped me up in his arms and said gently, "Your mom put in a hard day at work today and she is really tired. Besides, a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!
As I have grown older, I've thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. Learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other's differences contribute to a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship. We could extend this philosophy to any relationship, such as a husband-wife, parent-child, or friendship. Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket. Keep it in your own. So, please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burnt one will do just fine.
12. How did the author's dad react to the burnt biscuit?
A. He set it aside for breakfast.
B. He ate butter and jelly instead.
C. He uttered his complaints loudly.
D. He ate it up as if nothing happened.
13. Which of the following words can best describe the author's dad?
A. Caring.
B. Determined.
C. Proud
D. Hardworking.
14. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Show understanding to imperfect things.
B. Ask the children to respect their parents.
C. Enjoy the over-cooked biscuits willingly.
D. Make important decisions on your own.
15. In which section of a magazine may this passage appear?
A. History and culture.
B. Family and relationship.
C. Cuisine and health.
D. Entertainment and sports.

I'm writing to tell you about a food poisoning accident. Several days ago, my neighbor ate a bag of food buying from the market. After the meal, they had stomachaches and our faces turned pale.Fortunate, one of their friends found the accident and immediately called a ambulance, which carried them quickly to a hospital. After several hours' treatment they finally escaped with death. As some illegal businessmen only interested in making profits to become rich quickly, they seldom care about the necessary safe measures.Nor do they care about which happens to consumers. They shall be charged by law.Meanwhile, I do hope the whole society can realize the important of food safety and begin taking action together to make sure food is safe.

Travel does have some dangers, but there is a kindness that coats every corner of the world.
In almost every city, we have found kind-hearted people that have either opened their hearts or their homes. My friend Agelika is one of those people.
When I was a teenager, I got lost in a foreign country. I was inBerlin,Germanys, on my month-long overseas study tour inEurope. My team and I had one night to spend there. However, while most of my teammates decided to stay indoors and relax, I did not want to pass up the chance to exploreBerlin.
I visited many major attractions around the city that night. When exhaustion set in(开始), I checked the time
on my watch. I was surprised to sec that it was two o'clock in the morning!
Quickly, I walked to a subway station. As I got a subway ticket back to the hotel, I realized that it was my father's birthday. This would be the first birthday I couldn't celebrate with him because he had passed away a few months earlier. Before I could begin reminiscing about(追忆)my father, I heard train wheels screeching(发出刺耳声)to a stop.
I dashed onto the train. At first, I was thankful to have made it onto the train. But that relief quickly turned to panic when I noticed that the train was headed in the wrong direction!
I looked around the nearly empty carriage and saw a girl about my age sitting quietly by the window and then I approached her.
"Hi, do you speak English? I'm lost. Can you help me?" I asked, showing my ticket to her.
It was good luck that the girl understood my problem. She tried to tell me how to return to where I had first gotten on the train. But my anxious mind couldn't follow her instructions.
Without thinking, I blurted out(脱口说出), "Can you come with me?"
