control says the kind of cholera has been spreading throughout the world since 1961. It was discovered that year in Indonesia. Since the first case in Peru, more than sixteen thousand people have been affected and about one hundred have died.
Cholera is caused by polluted food and water. People become infected (传染) when they eat the polluted food or drink the polluted water. If untreated immediately, they may die within hours. Medical researchers have developed a vaccine (菌苗) medicines to protect against cholera. But the vaccine is only about 50% effective. And it protects against cholera for only about six months. Medical experts say the best way to fight cholera is to prevent it. They also say people should not eat uncooked food or food that has not been cooked long enough. 22.(8分)US student Vanessa Tahay stands out from the other teenagers in her school. Her skin is dark, her accent is thick, and if you ask her, she will tell you these are the things she is proudest of. Tahay is a poet, and at 18 she was considered among the best in Los Angeles.
When she is on the stage, audiences often go silent. They also laugh, shout and cry. But this doesn’t come easily for someone who comes from a village that sits at the base of a huge mountain range in Central America. When she first appeared at school, she was teased by others for being short and different. She never spoke, so they called her “mouse”.
“How do I defend myself?” Tahay thought. “I don’t know how.”
“Keep going,” her mother would tell her. “At some point, you’ll learn.”
She spent hours after school and on weekends watching the same DVDs: English without Barriers.
Tahay’s elder brother, Elmer, persuaded her to go to the after-school poetry club. In the last six years, her English teacher Laurie Kurnick has turned Cleveland Charter High School’s poetry program into one of the most respected in the city. Her team draws from the likes of D.H. Laurence, Pat Mora and Kendrick Lamar to create poems about their own lives. The poems focus on many things —some funny, some painful.
The first time Tahay read the group’s poems, chills went up her spine (脊柱). “I wish I could write like that,” she thought. “I want to say something.”
She wrote her first poem about her first year in America. She called it Invisible. The day her turn came to recite in front of the team, she broke down crying. She cried for 15 minutes. “I had so much held in,” Tahay said. “I couldn’t even finish it.”
But she kept at it despite her less-than-perfect grammar, spelling and diction (措辞). Still, she wouldn’t tell her friends about her poetry because she worried they would make fun of her.
But with time, her poems changed her. “They gave me pride,” Tahay said. “They told me that I’m worth something.”
“She had this innocence,” Kurnick said. “This willingness to be genuine and show you things you don’t ever see.”1、What did Tahay’s mother suggest she do when she was teased by others?
A.Fight with them bravely.
B.Report them to her teachers.
C.Ignore them and keep going.
D.Try hard to make friends with them.
2、What are the themes of Tahay and her team’s poems?
A.Their admiration for the great poets.
B.Their appreciation of natural beauty.
C.Their expectations of a better future.
D.Funny and painful stories about their lives.
3、How did Tahay probably feel when she first read the group’s poems?
A.She was cold. B.She was excited.
C.She was nervous. D.She was frightened.
4、How did Tahay benefit from writing poems?
A.She felt more confident about herself.
B.She won many national poetry competitions.
C.She became the first student poet in the city.
D.She improved her grammar and spelling greatly.
23.(8分)Most of us don’t reach for that gnarled (多瘤的) carrot when selecting our produce at the local supermarket. That’s exactly why Americans waste up to 40% of edible food every year. This unbelievable number has sparked the “ugly food” movement, inspiring many companies to sell ugly fruit and vegetables to consumers, rather than throwing them in the trash.
One San Francisco organization is taking a unique approach. The Salvage Supperclub hosts fancy dinners inside dumpsters (垃圾箱) where they serve dishes entirely prepared with food that would have otherwise gone to waste.
Josh Treuhaft, founder of these ugly food dinners, originally came up with the idea to bring about the awareness of America’s food waste problem. “There is undeveloped potential in their food that for some reason, not to their own fault, is going to waste,” he told Seeker’s Laura L ing.
Treuhaft isn’t alone in his effort to reduce America’s food waste. A request last year called for Whole Foods to become part of the ugly food movement. They sold misshapen (畸形的) fruits and vegetables in Northern California stores.
Selling imperfect produce is still relatively rare right now, which can be partially attributed to a supply issue rather than a lack of willing participants. Raley’s, a Sacramento-based grocery chain, started an ugly food pilot program called “Real Good”, but discontinued it after 90 days saying they had “some challenges sourcing the product” A grower might have large amounts of ugly produce one year due to terrible weather, but much less the next year if the weather is better. Harvests constantly vary and retailers are more likely to buy ugly produce in large number rather than just a few pounds at a time.
This is why organizations like the Salvage Supperclub are playing an important role in the prevention of food waste. The Salvage Supperclub takes it a step further by not only buying the ugly product, but turning it into a good dining experience as well.
1、What does the underlined words “edible food” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Healthy food. B.Expensive food.
C.Food suitable to eat. D.Food grown locally.
2、Why does the Salvage Supperclub have dinners inside the dumpsters?
A.To share their fancy ideas.
B.To warn people not to waste.
C.To show waste should be reused.
D.To advise people not to throw dumpsters.
3、What makes Raley’s stop its “Real Good” after 90 day s of its operation?
A.Lack of sources of product.
B.Retailers’ pursuing larger profit.
C.Bad harvests due to bad weather.
D.People’s unwillingness to buy imperfect produce.
4、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Joining in the Ugly Food Movement.
B.An Unusual Dining Experience.
C.Making Full Use of Ugly Food.
D.The Food Waste Problem in America.
24.(8分)American families are accustomed to settling in faraway places, which has been a national phenomenon. Decades of data, including a more recent Gallup study, characterizes the US as one of the most geographically mobile countries in the world. “About one in four US adults(24 percent) has reported moving within the country in the past five years.” the reported noted. With the exceptio n of Finns(23 percent) and Norwegians(22 percent), Americans move considerably more than their European peers.
Though some may move for love or family, the major reason why Americans choose to move around is, unsurprisingly, related to work. Citing data from the Current Population Survey, a post on the blog of the New York Fed noted that between 58 and 2013, “slightly more than half of interstate(州际的) migrants said they moved for employment-related reasons—a category that includes moves undertaken for new jobs, job transfers, and easier commutes(通勤).”
The seeking of opportunity, particularly for an immigrant nation, is a national mythology(神话) as well as an emotional attachment to work. A new working paper analyzed by Ben Steverman at Bloomberg suggests that workers in the US now “put in almost 25 percent more hours than Europeans” in a given year. This figure has steadily risen since
the 30s, when the hours logged by workers in Western Europe and the US were roughly the same.
There are, of course, some internal factors. The US is much vaster than most European countries, plus it boasts(拥有) a common language. It is considered to be a sign of an efficient labor market that US workers can be persuaded to move to regions where there is a steady growth in jobs, such as the Sun Belt in recent years. And while American workers often have fewer labor protections than their European counterparts, as a report by the World Bank noted in 2012, American “labor laws give employers the power to fire, hire, or relocate(重新安置) workers according to their needs”,a flexibility that is thought to aid economic growth. The World Band report added that the occupation of the average US employee in 66 was 4 years, compared to 10 years in the European Union.
Nevertheless, while Americans remain excessively mobile, FaithKarahan and Darious Li at the New York Fed are the latest to note that US workers are moving around less than before. During the 40s, 3 percent of working-age Americans relocated to a different state each year; that figure had been cut in half by 2010. “While part of the decline can be attributed to the Great Recession,” the authors suggest, “this__phenomenon took place over the course of several decades and is not necessarily related to the economic conditions.”
So what accounts for this phenomenon? A round-up of theories by Brad Plumer at The Washington Post included the aging of the US workforce, the further rise of two-income households, the burdens of real estate, evolving workplace culture, as well as the flat line of wages, which makes moving away for a job, on average, a less rewarding financial proposition.
Karahan and Li put much stock in the effects of an aging workforce, to which they attribute at least half of the decline in interstate migration. “In short, a youn g individual today is moving less than a young person did in the 40s because of the higher presence of older workers,” they write, suggesting that employers have shifted their employment tactics(策略) to adapt to the changing demographics(人口统计数据) of the workforce. Needless to say, movies about this era in American life, in which fewer people set out to start lives in wide-ranging places, will probably be much less exciting.
1、According to the passage, in the past five years, Americans have moved ________.
A.relatively less than the British B.less frequently than Italians
C.slightly more than Norwegians D.considerably more than Finns
2、What can we infer from Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.Americans choose to move mainly for work and family.
B.Americans have a very strong interest in work.
C.Americans invested more time in work than Europeans in 35.
D.Americans tended to move to Europe between 58 and 2013.
3、Which of the following is NOT the reason why American workers move more than their European peers? A.There is a common language in the US.
B.The US is much vaster than most European countries.
C.American labor laws give employers more freedom to deal with them.
D.They are offered more efficient labor protections.
4、The underlined part “this phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 r efers to ________.
A.the Great Recession
B.the decline of working-age Americans' interstate migration
C.the reduction in the number of working-age Americans
D.Americans' tendency to remain mobile
5、How do American employers deal with the aging workforce according to the passage?
A.By sticking to their previous policies. B.By adjusting to it.
C.By improving their employees' job skills. D.By raising employment standard.
6、As to the current situation of Americans migration, the author might feel ________.
A.curious B.strange C.confused D.disappointed
25.(10分)Kanda really doesn't like to walk alone. The scientist from a research institute of intelligent robots finds the experience so boring that he'd rather drive—even though he lives close to his lab and knows that walking us healthy. "I enjoy walking with someone, like with my wife, with my daughter," Kanda said. "But they are not always available."
So Kanda, who specializes in human-like bots, developed a robotic walking partner that could make small talk based on its surroundings, which, he hopes, might motivate people to get out and exercise more. The bot rests on a person's shoulder like a boxy parrot. It weighs about a pound and a half and sits roughly 8.5 inches high, 3.5inches wide, and 10 inches long. A microphone, speaker, and internal camera allow it to communicate. It's even equipped with a smile.
Kanda and his team collected video form five different locations, including a garden and a shopping mall, and created a dataset of small talk topics related to each location. Then they programmed the robot to associate visual cues with specific topics. A special speech software provided the robot with a voice. Near a group of parked cars, for example, it might say, "In a big parking lot, sometimes I forget where I parked."
They tested the robot on 15 volunteers, 10 males and 5 females, who were paid and averaged about 26 years old. "Have you ever blown a puff of dandelion(蒲公英)seeds into the air?" The robot asked a participant, who smiled and responded, "Yes, I often did that when I was a child." Although several participants noted the robot's weight, Kanda was surprised that no one considered the experience as strange or funny. "I guess people enjoy new technologies," he
said.
Just like a human partner, Kanda's bot isn't perfect. It's not able to go for walks in heavy rain and, while the robot can make expressions, it can't really hold a conversation, about which Kanda is most worried. Despite its limits, Kanda was comforted by the bot's presence. "I felt a kind of sense of being with someone, "he said, "particularly when it spoke."
1、Why does Kanda have the idea of developing a robotic walking partner?
A.Because he wants someone to accompany him while walking.
B.Because he has never developed a robot like a parrot.
C.Because his family are unwilling to walk with him.
D.Because he is crazy about developing robots.
2、What characteristic does the robot have?
A.It can "speak" and "see".
B.It can walk like a human being.
C.It can communicate with people freely.
D.It is much more humorous than a real person.
3、What is necessary for the robot to function?
A.A small size.
B.A boxy shape.
C.A human partner.
D.A speech software.
4、What is Kanda most likely to do about his robot next?
A.To make it more convenient to carry.
B.To improve its conversational skills.
C.To enable it to walk in heavy rain.
D.To better its sound system.
