It is universally acknowledged that renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower are all much better for the climate than fossil fuels. It is true for wind and solar. However, the picture for hydropower is more complicated than we think.
A new study by the Environmental Defense Fund analyzed the climate impacts of 1,500 hydropower facilities across the globe. That accounts for about half of hydropower generation worldwide. The researchers looked at whether the facilities behave as a greenhouse gas sink or as a source. To figure this out, they looked into all the different components that help determine a hydropower facility's greenhouse gasemissions (排放).
“There are so many contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower — but essentially, the majority of greenhouse gas emissions arise from the reservoir (水库) itself, as vegetation and soils are submerged underwater in the dam thatis used for the hydropower generation.” said lissa Ocko, a senior climate scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and co-author of the study. As the submerged vegetation breaks down, it releases greenhouse gases such as CO2.
“The larger the surface area of the reservoir, the more greenhouse gases are going to be given out from that reservoir. Also, the temperature plays a role as well how warm the reservoir is will affect how much greenhouse gases are produced and given out from the reservoir.” added Ocko.
Through their analysis, Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg, also with the Environmental Defense Fund, discovered that the climate impacts of hydropower cover a complete range. The good news is that some facilities perform just as well as wind and solar. But shockingly, more than 100 facilities are actually worse for the climate than fossil fuels. The study is in the journalEnvironmentalScience and Technology.
This finding doesn't mean we should forget about hydropower. “But we just need to be careful to make sure that we have climate benefits. There are a lot of situations where hydropower can be equal to wind and solar. So it really depends on the specific facility." said Ocko.
4. How do scientists prove hydropower facilities' effect on the climate?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By conducting experiments.
C. By referring to previous studies.
D. By analyzing causes and effects.
5. What are the main sources of greenhouse gases from hydropower?
A. Vegetation and soils.
B. Heat and sunlight.
C. Pollutants in the reservoir.
D. Components of the generators.
6. What have Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg found?
A The surface area of a reservoir decides the climate.
B. Hydropower often influences the climate in all aspects.
C. Some facilities perform much better than wind and solar.
D. Fossil fuels are worse for the climate than over 100 facilities.
7. What is the text mainly about?

Most children who have suffered from ADHD still have it as teens. During teen years, especially as the hormonal changes of teenagers are going on and the demands of school and extra-curricular activities are increasing, ADHD may get worse.
Because of problems with getting unfocused and poor concentration, many teens with ADHD have problems in school. Grades may fall, especially if the teen is not getting ADHD treatment. It’s not uncommon for teens with ADHD to forget their homework, lose textbooks, and become bored with their daily class work. Teens may become
inattentive or extremely attentive, not waiting for their turn before blurting out answers. They may cut in on their teacher and classmates. Teens with ADHD may also befidgetyand find it hard to sit still in class.
Often, teens with ADHD are so busy focusing on other things that they forget about the task at hand. This can be seen especially with homework and athletic skills and in relationships with their schoolmates. This lack of attention to what they’re doing often leads to bad grades on tests and being passed over for sports teams, after-school activities, and learning teams. Kids with ADHD can be targets for bullying, too. But, not all children with ADHD have trouble getting along with others. If your child does, you can take measures to help improve their social skills and relationships.
ADHD affects all parts of a teenager’s life. As a parent you should discover your teen’s troubles as early as possible. The earlier your child’s troubles are discovered, the more successful the following steps can be.
8. What does the author plan to do in paragraph 1?
A. To list the types of ADHD.
B. To introduce the main topic.
C. To show the author’s opinion.
D. To explain the causes of ADHD.
9. What does the underlined word “fidgety” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. Clever.
B. Noisy.
C. Restless.
D. Lazy.
10. What is the text mainly about?
A. Ways to deal with ADHD.
B. Effects of ADHD on teens.
C. Teens’ school performances.
D. Demands of school work.
11. What may the following paragraph talk about?
A. How parents can help a teen with ADHD.
B. The importance of healthy peer relationships.
C. How many children are suffering from ADH
D. D. Different opinions about treating ADHD in teens.

Rain is vital to life on Earth. However, rain isn’t just made of water anymore—it’s partly made of plastic.
Millions of tiny pieces of plastic, called microplastics, are wandering around Earth’s atmosphere and traveling across entire continents according to a study published in one journal on April 12.
Microplastics are plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter and come from a number of sources. Plastic bags and bottles released into the environment break down into smaller and smaller bits. Some microplastics are produced deliberately to provide abrasion(研磨)in products, such as toothpaste and cleansers. Another major source is your washing machine. When you wash clothing, tiny microfibers get washed away with
the wastewater. Even though the water is treated by a wastewater plant, the microplastics remain, and they are released into the sea.
Plastic rain may remind people of acid rain, but the former is far more widespread and harder to deal with. The tiny particles, too small to be seen with the naked eye, are collected by the wind from the ground. They are so light that they stay in the air to be blown around the globe. As they climb into the atmosphere, they are thought to act as nuclei (核心) around which water vapor (水蒸气) combines to form clouds. Some of the dust falls back to land in dry conditions, while the rest comes down as rain.
Microplastics have been found everywhere you can imagine. From fish and frogs to mice and mosquitoes, their bodies have been found on average to contain 40 pieces of microplastic. As the top of the food chain, humans are exposed to microplastics, too. “We live on a ball inside a bubble,” microplastic researcher Steve Allen said. “There are no borders, there are no edges. It rains on the land and then gets blown back up into the air again to move somewhere else. There’s no stopping it once it’s out.”
12. What do we know about microplastics?
A. They have a diameter of over 5 millimeters.
B. They have become a threat to humans.
C. They are light and can be easily dealt with.
D. They cause acid rain and plastic rain.
13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Waysto deal with microplastics.
B. The wide use of microplastics.
C. Where microplastics come from.
D. How microplastics pollute water.
14. What does Steve Allen want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. No place can be safe from microplastic pollution.
B. The atmosphere possesses the ability to self-cleanse.
C. Countries should work together to fight pollution.
D. Wind causes microplastics to move somewhere else.
15. The main purpose of the article is to________.
A. call on people to use fewer plastic products
B. warn people of the danger of microplastics
C. introduce the sources and effects of microplastics
D. make a comparison between acid rain and plastic rain

How to Start a Friendship
To increase the chances that a friendship will grow, children need to express openness to others.
A very basic way to show openness is to exchange greetings with kids around them.___16___If another child says "Hi!" to them, they usually look away or say nothing because they feel awkward and shy. But they are giving the other child the impression that "I don't like you, and leave me alone!" Actually, that's not how they feel, although that's what they're showing. On the other hand, some outgoing children may go so far that they keep greeting anyone even if the other children feel uncomfortable with this behavior. It doesn't open the door for friendship.___17___
Praising is another easy way to show openness to friendship. Everyone feels good to receive a sincere praise, and usually likes people who are kind enough to notice his best side!
___18___It could mean lending a pencil to a classmate, saving him a seat, helping him carry something, or sharing a lunch treat. Kindness leads more kindness and it's one of the best ways to begin a friendship. It is true that kind children are better liked by the other kids. But if they try to buy friendship with money or expensive gifts, it will never work.___19___
Showing openness just opens a door to friendship.___20___To increase the chances that a friendship will grow, children need to send their friendship invitations to kids who might come in.
A. Actually, it shuts the door.
B. However, shy children often have trouble with this.
C. Instead, it is to show weakness rather than kindness.
D. Expressing openness to others opens the door to friendship.
E. But it doesn't guarantee that anyone will walk through that door.
F.Small kindnesses can also be a good way to send invitation for friendship.
G. Extend their friendship invitations to the right kids who want to come in.

Later that day it was time to go to the first practice of the season. There were other guys and they all sat together talking, but Nick just sat there and waited. “Alright boys! Line up and tell me your names,” the coach demanded. “Ricky, Derick, Josh, Dan, Nick.” they answered, one after another. Practice went on and the coach began to try out the boys. Ricky and his friends did really good. But the coach ran out of time before he could try out Nick.
The next day, Ricky and his friends came up to Nick and told him he wasn’t good enough though they had never seen him play. Nick said nothing. Soon enough it was time for Nick to try out. “We will start with free throws,” the coach said. Nick stood on the free throw line and then shot. He didn’t miss one shot. The boys were amazed. Ricky was mad because they were all giving the attention to Nick. The coach informed Nick that he made the team. All the boys were congratulating him.
Nick was happy that he was on the team and it was a good way to make friends. Ricky just stood there and looked at him in anger. Ricky always got the attention but now Nick did because he’s an amazing player. The next day came and Nick went to lunch. He sat by himself and the next thing he knew was that the table he was sitting at was filled with all the basketball players except Ricky.
