21.(6分)On a cold January morning in 2017, four-year-old Eli stands on the bank of Douglas River, hugging a dead salmon(鲑鱼) against his thick red coat. He looks up at his father, Andrew, who nods encouragingly. “Go ahead,” he says. “Put it in.” The young boy drags his feet forward and holds the fish as far as he can into the shallow water. “It’s
floating!” Eli yells, delighted. For a moment, it’s almost as if the handsome salmon could come back to life.
Eli’s salmon is just one of 100 or so death bodies that will land in Douglas River in a half-hour activity this morning, deposited by dozens of volunteers. None of the salmon will rise from the dead, but Darrell Wick, president of the Douglas Society, who has promoted this gathering, is in the resurrection(复活) business.
Wick also leads the g roup’s campaign to recover this urban waterway’s salmon population. “The Douglas Society started looking into the possibility of recovering the salmon in the river in the mid-1990s, and part of a thought in that Lime focused on river recovery in cities worldwide. Back then, the prospects (前景) looked future lefts from the result.
Wick and his group are devoted to giving the river a full make-over. This monumental repair job, supported by approximately $95,000 of funding from the Pacific Salmon Foundation over the past 15 years, has involved recovering the river-habitat of salmon and preventing it from wearing away. 22.(8分)I am writing to tell you about your article Smartphones Make Life Easier in last Sunday’s newspaper. You did an excellent job explaining the good p oints of smartphones, but you didn’t talk about their bad points at all. So, I hope you’ll let me give your readers some advice on smartphone etiquette (礼仪).
The first point I’d like to address is loudness. When you talk on your smartphone in public, pleas e don’t shout. In
fact, the microphones in smartphones are very sensitive (灵敏的). So, you can be heard even if you speak quietly.
Another point is about personal space. I don’t think it is polite to make calls in small spaces full of people. This makes othe rs uncomfortable and forces them to listen to your personal business. What’s worse, it stops many
face-to-face conversations from ever beginning.
Lastly, doing two things at the same time is dangerous. For example, making calls while driving is a bad habit. Pay attention to the road! Similarly, when staying with your friends, turn off your smartphone and enjoy their company. Yours truly,
Amber Jala
1、Amber Jala wrote the letter to ________.
A.find a good job B.provide advice
C.make her life easier D.buy a smartphone
2、What does the underlined word “address” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.致函B.称呼
C.陈述D.选址
3、According to Paragraph 3, what makes people around you uncomfortable?
A.Discussing face-to-face. B.Speaking quietly on your phone.
C.Minding your own business. D.Calling in small spaces full of people.
4、What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.It is dangerous to drive on the road.
B.It is easy to start a company with others.
C.It is bad to turn off our phones while driving.
D.It is important to use our smartphones properly.
23.(8分)The clock is ticking. David Brunelli has just swallowed a huge burger. The crowd cheers excitedly as he downs fistfuls of fries.
Welcome to the world of competitive eating.
Brunelli is part of a select group who compete to eat massive quantities of food as quickly as possible. Eating contests may seem like harmless fun, but they have a dark side and some critics are saying it’s time for them to stop.
Pouring crazy amounts of food down our throats is nothing new. Gorging banquets (狼吞虎咽会) was a regular part of ancient Roman culture. In the 1800s, some New York City politicians settled bets through eating challenges.
Pie-eating contests have been a Fourth of July tradition for more than a century.
For supporters like Brunelli, though, eating contests are more than a custom. They are a path to fortune.
But prize money does nothing to reduce the health risks of competitive eating. Competitive eating can even be
life-threatening. In 1991, a man in Virginia suffered a stroke (中风) after eating 38 eggs in 29 seconds; In Florida, in 2012, a man died shortly after winning an eating contest leading a group of doctors to call for a ban on eating contests.
In any event, the risk to competitors is only part of the story. Nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and competitive eating sets a terrible example by encouraging overeating. And in a world where 805 million people go hungry every day, downing ridiculous quantities of food for entertainment seems not just wasteful but also cruel.
For now, though, it seems eating contests are here to stay. Last year, more than three million viewers watched Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on TV. This year, Matt Stonie ate 182 pieces of bacon in 5 minutes, breaking the world record.
What record will be broken next? Do you really want to find out?
1、What does the author try to express in Paragraph 4?
A.Competitive eating is a tradition.
B.It’s great to learn from ancient people.
C.Competitive eating should be accepted.
D.It’s exciting to challenge others to eat.
2、Why does Brunelli take part in the eating contest?
A.For food. B.For fun.
C.For honor. D.For money.
3、The examples given in Paragraph 6 are used to show eating contests ________.
A.use unhealthy food
B.waste too much food
C.put competitors at risk
D.set a bad example to kids
4、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The author hopes to break the record.
B.The author is eager to know the result.
C.The author wants readers to find out the result.
D.The author disapproves of competitive eating.
24.(8分)Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.
Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A previous research found positive results on the use of
them. But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up to language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out aimed to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special model where some content is available for free while some content is not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level as there is a decrease in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users tend to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.
Getting any feedback on Busuu depends on whether your answer is correct or not. While it is helpful, this is not the sort of feedback language teachers prefer, as it does not explain why the answer is right or wrong. In spite of this, feedback in the app is very highly rated.
More than 92% of respondents state that the app has met their expectations and 86% rate the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance anxiety that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
1、The results of the former research weren’t always dependable because _________.
A.it was only carried out before class
B.it didn’t consider users in class
C.it just focused on positive results
D.it used out-of-date methods
2、What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?
A.All the contents are free to use.
B.Most users consider it satisfying.
C.It’s used by more advanced learners.
D.It’s more popular with female learners.
3、Which of the following can probably replace the underlined word “address”?
A.deal with B.write down
C.turn to D.speak of
4、What is the main idea of the text?
A.Students won’t suffer anxiety in learning languages by using Busuu.
B.Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.
C.Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers.
D.Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.
25.(10分)It's rare that you see the words "shyness" and "leader" in the same sentence. After all, the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent net-workers and that those shy people are not. A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 3 percent of leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".
Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking, shy people take a cautious approach to chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say. Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地)motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.
Being shy can also bring other benefits. Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in? Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence:they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.
Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.
Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comfortable working with little information and sticking to their inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent. Don't believe me? Maybe you'll believe Albert Einstein, who once said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's that I stay with problems longer." Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.
The myth that shy people are less effective leaders than their outgoing fellows is just a misunderstanding. Make wise use of your personality strengths to lead your business no matter what side of the range you fall on.
1、We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ___________.
A.shy people are sensitive to rewards
B.shy people care more about content
C.outgoing people are more careful about chances
D.outgoing people consider what to learn while listening
2、The example of Johnny shows ____________.
A.shy people are likely to be modest
B.hardworking students speak little in public
C.some students keep silent on purpose at school
D.shy people may have an advantage in discussion
3、We can learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 that ____________.
A.success results from devotion B.shyness contributes to popularity
C.outside reward leads to insistence D.uncertainty counts more than certainty
4、The author supports his ideas mainly by ____________.
A.giving definitions and presenting research results
B.explaining problems and providing solutions
C.quoting authorities and making evaluations
D.making contrasts and giving examples
