Passage three :(90')
“I would almost rather see you dead . ”Robert S. Cassatt , a leading banker of Philadelphia , shouted when his twenty-year-old eldest daughter announced that she wanted to become an artist . In the 19th century , playing at drawing or painting on dishes was all right for a young lady , but serious work in art was not . And when the young lady’s family ranked among (跻身于)the best of Philadelp hia’s social families , such an idea could not even be considered .
That was how Marty Cassatt , born in 1844 , began her struggle as an artist . She did not tremble before her father’s anger . Instead , she opposed him with courage and at last made h im change his mind . Mary Cassatt gave up her social position and all thought of a husband and a family , which in those times was unthinkable for a young lady . In the end , after long years of hard work and perseverance , she became America’s most import ant woman artist and the internationally recognized leading woman painter of the time.
What do we know about Mary Cassatt’s marriage ?
A. Her marriage failed because she never gave a thought to her husband and family .
B. She never married because she did not want to be just a wife and mother .
C. After marriage she decided to give up her husband rather than her career .
D. She did not marry because for a lady of her social position to marry below her was unthinkable.
Mary Cassatt gave up her social position and all thought of a husband and a

passage one (96'上海)
This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S homes . They will attend U.S schools , meet U.S teenagers , and form impressions of the real America . At the same time , about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and give a new understanding of the rest of the world.
This year _____ teenagers will take part in the exchange programme between America and other countries ?
A. twenty three hundred
B. thirteen hundred
C. over three thousand
D. less than two thousand

故从文中some twenty-three hundred teenagers from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S homes 和At the same time , about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries

Passage two :
Wall Street is a famous street in New York city . It got its name from the wooden wall that used to stand where the street now runs.
The wall was built in the 1660s. New York was then a Dutch city set up by people coming from Holland in Europe ; it was called New Amsterdam.
The American Indians were not always friends of the Dutch ; nor were the English . So the Dutch built the wooden wall to protect their town.
The wall is gone now . But Wall Street reminds the people of New York of the Dutch who settled there .
The wall was built ______.
A. by the English against the Americans and the Indians
B. by the Dutch against the Indians and the Americans
C. by the English against the Dutch and the Indians

Passage six :
Kleptomania is an illness of the mind that gives a person the desire to steal . Such a person is not really a thief . They are sick and cannot help themselves . All small children act naturally and as they grow up they normally learn to control their actions . People with kleptomania for certain medical reasons have failed to develop control over their desire to take things that do not belong to
them . With medical help they may become normal citizen again . The things that a kleptomaniac steals are seldom of great value . They often give away what they have stolen or collect objects without using them .
1. From the text we learn that small children _______.
A. have little control of themselves
B. usually steal things but grow up honest
C. are usually kleptomaniacs
D. like to give things away
从文中All small children act naturally and as they grow up they normally learn to control their actions

2. Kleptomaniacs usually steal things that _______.
A. are valuable
B. are unimportant
C. their friends like
D. they themselves need

The things that a kleptomaniac steals are seldom of great value 中的seldom of great value可知其意与unimportant相似,故选B.

A resolute man is a person who once makes up his mind to do something , he won’t give it up half way .

Though Tom’s face has been washed quite clean , his neck still remains grubby .

The river is so turbid that it is impossible to see the bottom even when it is shallow.

There must be some support facilities as well , including roads to get to the hotel , electricity ,
sewers (阴沟)to handle waste , and water .

At forty- two he was in his prime and always full of energy.
此句中的in his prime 与full of energy 有着并列的关系,故猜出“in his prime”意为“在他的鼎盛期”,“在他的最佳时期”。

You can take any of the periodicals : The World of English , Foreign Language
Teaching in Schools , or English Learning .

The American idea of the future is limited , however . It is the foreseeable future and not the future of involving (牵连)many centuries .

A. What is the story mainly about ?
B. What is the main idea of this passage ?
C. From this passage we know _______.
D. The story mainly tells ________.
E. Which is the best title of the passage ?
F. What is the author’s main purpose ?
首先掌握两个概念:general(主旨)和specific(细节)

1. Sentence practice :Find out the general sentence from each group.
(1)____G____ Africa falls into 7 divisions.
_______ East Africa is the roof to Africa.

(2)_____ A snake smells with its tongue.
_____ A snake swallows a whole thing.
_____ G ____ A snake is a strange animal.

(3)______ The necktie started out as a piece of lace and turned into a silk bow.
___G ____ The necktie has been getting smaller and smaller for hundreds of years .
______ Now many neckties are no wider than a piece of string.

(4)_______ The straight part of dance heads upwards if the feeding place is towards the sun .
____ G ___ The straight part of dance changes when the sun’s position changes .
______ The straight part of dance is different in the morning from what it is in the afternoon .
______ The straight part of dance points downward if the feeding place is far away from the sun .

(5)_____ The Native Americans caught and trained the wild horses to carry good.
____ G ____ The Bison were an important part of Native’s existence.
_____ It became easier to hunt the Bison by riding horses .
_____ Bison were killed for meat and their fur for warm clothing.

如人教版高二上学期课本第26课第三段中“As in China , the weather is different from area to area .

如人教版高二上学期课本第46课最后两段中“How could she get the lion away from her baby”一句为主旨句。

Passage One :
One day a man walked into a pet shop and said to the shop-assistant , “I need two small gray mice and about five dozen roaches (蟑螂)and two spiders. ”
“What do you need these things for ? ”the shop-assistant was very surprised .
“Well , ”replied the man , “I’m moving out of my apartment and the landlord insists that I should leave the house in exactly the same condition as I found it . ”
问题:
This passage suggests that when the man moved into the apartment , it ________
A. very clean
B. just cleaned by the landlord
C. tidy and comfortable
D. dirty and full of insects

Passage two :
House prices in England increased sharply between 1971 and 1972. The following records how much a house in Chelsea , London had risen in price since 1955.
Take No. 29 Smith Terrace for example . In 1955 , Jane Gray sold it for £4,900 and sold it nine years later to Bill and Dreen White for £22,950 . Now four years later , in 1972 , the house is valued at £30,000.
问题:
1. When did Mrs Black buy the house ?
A. 1971
B. 1972
C. 1968
D. 1959
2. If Mrs Black had waited four years to sell the house , she would have earned as much as _______.
A. £28,000
B. £18,000
C. £30,000
D. £25,000
分析:
题一:由“Mrs Bowena Black …and sold it nine years later …Now four years later , in 1972 …”

题二:根据“Mrs Bowena Black …£4 ,900”,“…the house is valued at £30,000”推知D为正确选项。

Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become “computer-literate. ”But not all experts (专家)agree that this is a good idea .
One pioneer , in particular , who disagrees is David Tebbutt , the founder of Computertown UK. Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer , David does not see it that way . he says that Computertown UK was formed for just the opposite reason , to bring computers to people and make them “people-literate. ”
David Tebbutt thinks Computertowns are most successful when tied to a computer club but he insists there is an important difference between the two . The clubs are for people who have some computer knowledge already . This frightens away non-experts , who are happier going to Computertowns where there are computers for them to experiment on , with experts to encourage them and answer any questions they have . They are not told what to do , they find out . The

Once , Pompeii was a busy city of 22 000 people . It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius , a grass-covered volcano (火山). Mount Vesuvius had not erupted (喷发)for centuries , so the people of Pompeii felt safe . But they were not.
In August of AD 79 , Mount Vesuvius erupted . The entire top of the mountain exploded . and a huge black cloud rose into the air . Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii . When the eruption ended two days later , Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes . Almost all of its people were dead .
For centuries , Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash . Then , in the year 1861 , an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii . Slowly , carefully , Ginseppe and his men dug . The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains , houses and shops . There was a stadium with 20 000 seats . Perhaps the most important of all , there were everyday objects , which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii . Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom , so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine . They liked bread too , metal bread pans were in every bakery . In one bakery there were 81 round , flat Ioaves of bread-a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today . Tiny boxes filled with a dark , shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup.
Ginseppe has died , but his work continues . One-fourth has not been uncovered yet . Scientists are still digging , still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.
