北部是撒哈拉沙漠,面积770多万平方千米,是世界上最大的沙漠。

欧洲地形基本特征第一,欧洲地形以平原为主,平原面积约占全洲总面积的2/3,主要平原有东欧平原、中欧平原(波德平原)、西欧平原;第二,地势起伏不大,平均海拔在300米左右,是世界上平均海拔最低的洲;第三,冰川地形广布,第四纪冰川对欧洲广大地区影响显著,东欧平原和中欧平原部分地区呈波状起伏的地形;北欧地区的峡湾海岸和众多的湖泊;南部阿尔卑斯山区的宽谷和尖峰等,都是冰川作用的结果。

第四,山脉主要分布在北部和南部:北部有斯堪的纳维亚山脉,南部是阿尔卑斯山脉。

北美洲地形基本特征北美洲地形明显地分为三个南北纵列带,即西部是高大的山系,中部为广阔的平原,东部是低缓的高地。

西部高大的山系属科迪勒拉山系,由海岸山脉、内华达山脉及落基山脉等几列平行山脉组成,山间分布着高原和盆地。

中部广阔的平原分布在西部山地和东部高地之间,北起北冰洋,南抵墨西哥湾,是一片纵贯北美大陆中部的广阔平原,平原上有世界上最大的淡水湖群——五大湖(苏必利尔湖、密歇根湖、休伦湖、伊利湖、安大略湖)。
