Different News, Different Culture1.IntroductionAs every efffect has its reason, every social phonomenen has its cultural background. News, which plays the most important role in the rank of social media, reflects not only the nation‟s social systems but also people‟s customs, thinking concept as well as the core of culture—ideology. In this paper, I will show something about the news from CNN and CCTV respectivelly, and through the contrast I will demonstrate some aspects of differences in culture, between America and China.2.The Original of BothCable News Network, always referred to as CNN, was founded by Ted Turner in 1980. Upon its launch, CNN was the first network to provide 24-hour television news, and the first all-news television network in the United States. And now CNN programs are available to viewers in over 212 countries and territories. It is owned by Time Warner and the headquarters locates in Atlanta, America.China Central Television (CCTV) is the state TV station of China. It started its first broadcast in 1958 and was called Beijing TV at that time. In 1978, it changed to the current name, CCTV. It has a network of 19 channels and is the official mouthpiece of Chinese government. CCTV‟s headquarters locates in Beijing Central Business District (CBD).3. Different Details And Some Analysis About the Reason3.1 AM vs CNNBoth American Morning (AM) of CNN and Morning News (MN) of CCTV broadcast in the morning. However, there are some differences between the two programs.3.1.1 difference one: the anchorCNN or America programs are famous for their anchors because people watch programs because of the broadcaster. However, in CCTV the situation is totally the opposite.3.1.1.1 Eexample Of BothJohn Roberts is a co-anchor of CNN's American Morning. Prior to CNN, Roberts was famous as Chief White House Correspondent at CBS from 1999 to 2006, and he also anchored a Sunday-afternoon 3 p.m. ET newscast for the CBS Radio Network. Since John Roberts came to the program, American Morning had become more popular than before.Zhao Pu(赵普)serves in Morning News of CCTV from 2006 and become famous because of his two choking in this program while he reported the news about WenChuan and YuShu earthquake.3.1.1.2 Different Culture--Reason for The Above PhonomenaThere are many kinds of similar programs like American Morning in America and the competition is very fierce. The audience always concern the anchors‟ style and comments on news, and therefore the anchors influence the programs a lot. As a result, if the anchor is a very famous one and then the program will have high ratings. However, in China, CCTV is the official TV station of government and of course is the most popular channel. The competition is not as fierce and there is no worry about ratings. The program doesn‟t need the anchor to make it a popular one. However, as the program has a large audience, the anchor can rely on the program to be famous.3.1.2 Difference Two: style and contentThe content but not the anchor is the thing to be emphasize in Morning News while in American Morning the program is …human-oriented‟ and stress on the valuesof human beings.American Morning is human-oriented and there is many human‟s participation. The reports are full of fierce discussion. In the program there will be experts and guests who hold totally contradictory opinions and the comments on the same thing will be completely different, letting the audience themselves make their own conclusions. However, Morning News of CCTV is news-oriented and all we can get is straightforward news broadcasting. There are few discussions or comments and nothing complicated and special is involved in it.Actually, there are discussions about almost everything in CNN. For example, on President Obama‟s way to the i nauguration on January 20, 2010 the first couple got off the car and waved to the crowd. At that time, CNN launched the topic: What do you think of this action, stupid or brave? And this led to a heat discussion about Obama and different people had different opinions. From above, we can see that American Morning put stress on the understanding and viewpoints of the anchors and experts, while Morning News in China only pass the sheer news to audience. And from the above phenomenon we can find that Americans value the function of people‟s opinions and are tolerant of dissent. While in China people don‟t like to express one‟s opinions in public and therefore there will not be any dissent. This reflects some aspects of the deeply rooted cultural differences between two peoples.3.2 Situation Room vs Xinwen Lianbo3.2.1 The OriginalThe establishment of the News Channel of CCTV is a significant media event. It is also another important symbol of China‟s opening up to the outside world. As greatnational news channel, its operation and function is a meaningful issue that deserves to be researched. For example, the analysis of its programme is a perfect threshold for our investigation. In detail, the programme of the News Channel of CCTV including: dynamic news, talk show, comments, special topic and magazine programme. Owing to thelimit of timeand condition, this thesis can not give you a overall statistics and analysis on these fivesorts of programmers, so we chose the most representative one——dynamic news programme. Furthermore, as a TV channel based on news, the status of the dynamic newsprogramme is vital because the contents of it can reflect the general condition of the wholenews channel. To remedy the number of the programme, other researches are added to theresearch, so the research can have more information and data and the readers have a more clear inmagination to it.The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer is the command center for breaking news, politics and extraordinary reports from around the world. Mainly about Daily headline stories focusing on politics, homeland security, and human interest stories. The Happening Now statement to introduce the day's top stories is a remnant from the show's primary predecessor, Wolf Blitzer Reports.3.2.2 The Examples of Differences and Different CulturreThe Political Ticker provide the latest political news with dispatches, behind-the-scenes reports, and expert commentary. In Follow Wolf Blitzer on Twitter, you can read about the day's top political stories and more. And in CNN Politics Daily, you can get some political podcast from the Best Political Team.CCTV produces its own news broadcasts three times a day and is the country's most powerful and prolific television program producer. Its thirty-minute evening news, Xinwen Lianbo("News Simulcast"), is on the air at 7:00 PM Beijing Time. By far, it is the most known and watched news program in China which mainland Chinese watch to keep up with the government's politics having mainly focused on leaders receiving foreign guests and going on visits to foreign countries, the CPC's leaders having top meetings or conferences, and stories of courage that are supposed to exemplify one form or another of communism. Many important political news stories are broadcast through that program.3.2.3 Some common factorsOn April 9, 2008 broadcast of CNN's The Situation Room, asked to comment on the United States' relationship with China, Cafferty responded: "I think they're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years". TheLegal Immigrant Association (LIA) started an online petition calling for a formal apology, indicating that Cafferty's rant was anti-Chinese and has had the effect of exacerbating negative attitudes held by Americans toward Chinese and Chinese Americans. On the April 14, 2008 broadcast of CNN's Situation Room, Jack Cafferty clarified his remarks: " Last week, during a discussion of the controversy surrounding China's hosting of the Olympic Games, I said that the Chinese are basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they have been for the last 50 years. I was referring to the Chinese government, and not to Chinese people or to Chinese Americans.Later CNN President Jim Walton said: “ On behalf of CNN I'd like to apologize to the Chinese people for that. CNN has the highest respect for Chinese people around the world and we have no doubt that there was genuine offense felt by them over the Jack Cafferty commentary”.Western media had frequently implied that it was the Chinese police, and not the rioters, who killed people. Description of the events is positioned alongside phrases such as ' Chinese crackdown', giving a false impression that the Chinese authorities, not the rioters, were the cause of the injuries and killings. According to Rao Jin, CNN only reported selectively, and grossly misrepresented the 2008 Tibet is a website in response to " the lies and distortions of facts from the Western media" concerning the 2008 Tibetan unrest and the People's Republic of China's national unity. The site says that its purpose is to " collect, classify, and exhibit the misbehavior of Western media".Concern news under ideology, it‟s barely the same. Media should be objective. It‟s a shame for CNN when it face the Tibet issues and it‟s also unbearable to know many domestic media misrepresent news just for so called …harmony‟, which actually ignore the people's livelihood. So media are just for their own ideology. Any differences between the contents of stories that mass media provide can be identified by ideology differences. So it‟s natural that oriental media in China always keep harmonious silent for CPC and government and announce that western countries are brutal, cruel and dark, while western mass media keep telling the world stories that indicates many negative part in China, and their inimical views surely causeprejudices and enlarge the gap between the western countries and China.3.2.4 Different culture—the reason for differenceesI think it‟s a hostile subconscious be tween two different cultures. The historical problems that cold war had left behind really cause impact on the relationship between Chinese and western country. Ideology differences existed, and there are no methods to improve on the culture and ideology gap, so the media just act as they did. Governments in any ideology are willing to give media pressures to propaganda the positive part of them, let alone sometimes the pressures are necessary.Though even from the different news which carries different point of views we can see clealy the differences between the differert cultures, the world develops so fast that the golbal village makes the younger genneration more intimate. Nowadays, lured by C hina‟s faster growing economy and lower jobless tare, more an d more young Americans come to China to find their fortune and luck though many of them have encountered some difficulties, especially in the very beginning, as what we expected.4. ConclusionThe above explains why CNN and CCTV have so many differences, that is, the Western media emphasis individualism and humanism, they would focus news on humanity and things that affect the human life while Chinese media would emphasis collectivism. Chinese media is more likely to be a bondage or ligament of the whole, to hold everybody together as a group or community, which can overcome any difficulties. Mass media broadcast news, as well as advocate for the profit of their own ideology. These differences reflect deeply the culture differences between China and US.Just as an old saying goes: “Your parents sometimes tell a lie, mass media sometimes tell the truth.”When a man who don't want to be fooled by any media want to know the truth, he should read and compare reports from different sources, and judge them by truth, as well as by heart and soul.References[1]邓炎昌. 语言与文化[M].北京:外语教学与研究出版社.1989.[2]葛雷. 文化差异类作文模板英语Title: Cultural Differences。

Cultural differences are a fascinating and complex aspect of human society. They encompass a wide range of beliefs, customs, traditions, and behaviors that vary from one group to another. Understanding and appreciating these differences is essential for fostering mutual respect and harmony among people from different backgrounds. One of the most prominent cultural differences is language. Each culture has its own unique language or dialect, which shapes the way its members communicate and express themselves. Language not only serves as a means of communication but also reflects the values and worldview of a particular culture. For example, the Japanese language has different levels of formality to show respect, while in English, the use of titles and formal language may not be as prevalent. These linguistic nuances can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations, highlighting the importance of cross-cultural communication and language learning.Another significant cultural difference is the concept of time. In some cultures, punctuality is highly valued, and being late is considered disrespectful. In contrast, other cultures have a more relaxed attitude towards time and may not adhere to strict schedules. This can lead to misunderstandings and frustration when people from different cultural backgrounds work or socialize together. Understanding and respecting each other's time orientation is crucial for effective collaboration and relationship-building.Cultural differences also manifest in social customs and etiquette. For example, greetings vary widely across cultures, with some cultures placing a strong emphasis on formal greetings and gestures of respect, while others may have more informal or casual greeting customs. Additionally, dining etiquette, gift-giving practices, and body language can differ significantly from one culture to another. Being aware of these differences and adapting one's behavior accordingly is essential when interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.Religious beliefs and practices are another major source of cultural differences. Different cultures have their own religious traditions, rituals, and ceremonies that play a significant role in shaping their values and behaviors. Understanding and respecting these religious differences is crucial for promoting tolerance and inclusivity in a multicultural society. Moreover, cultural differences can also be observed in gender roles and family dynamics. In some cultures, traditional gender roles are deeply ingrained, with distinct expectations and responsibilities for men and women. In contrast, other cultures may have more fluid or egalitarian views on gender roles. Similarly, family structures and dynamics can vary widely, influencing the way individuals interact with their family members and the broader community.Cultural differences also extend to attitudes towards authority, individualism versus collectivism, and the perception of personal space. These differences can influence how people interact in social and professional settings, as well as their values and priorities in life.It is important to recognize that cultural differences are not inherently good or bad; they simply reflect the diversity of human experience. By understanding and appreciating these differences, individuals can cultivate empathy, respect, and open-mindedness towards others. This, in turn, can lead to more harmonious relationships and effective collaboration in an increasingly globalized world. In conclusion, cultural differences encompass a wide range of beliefs, customs, traditions, and behaviors that vary from one group to another. Understanding and appreciating these differences is essential for fostering mutual respect and harmony among people from different backgrounds. By acknowledging and embracing cultural diversity, individuals can contribute to a more inclusive and interconnected global community.。

文化差异导致的思维方式不同的英语作文

文化差异导致的思维方式不同的英语作文全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1Different Thinking From Different CulturesHave you ever noticed how some of your classmates think in really different ways than you? Like maybe they look at things from a totally new angle that never even crossed your mind before. That's probably because they come from a different cultural background than you! Culture is a big deal when it comes to shaping how we see the world. My family is from China, and I've noticed we tend to think quite differently than some of my American friends' families. For example, in my culture, we really value working hard, respecting our elders, and doing well in school above most other things. My parents are always stressing how important it is for me to study hard, get good grades, and go to a top university one day. They see education as the path to a successful future. But I have other friends whose parents don't seem to care about grades as much. As long as they're being good kids and doing their best, their parents are happy. Their focus is more onhaving a balanced life, exploring different interests, and figuring out what really motivates and fulfills them besides just academics.Another big difference is how we view individualism versus collectivism. In my Chinese culture, we tend to emphasize the needs and goals of the whole family and community over just looking out for number one. We're supposed to think about how our actions affect those around us and the greater good. But I know lots of American families put more importance on each person choosing their own path and doing what's right for them as an individual.Like my friend Emma's parents always tell her, "Don't worry about what anyone else thinks, just follow your heart and do what makes you happy!" That would be seen as pretty selfish thinking in my household. But Emma's family believes you can't totally sacrifice your own desires for the sake of others or you'll end up miserable. These mindset differences definitely cause some friction with me and my friends sometimes! We disagree on stuff like how much personal freedom and independence kids should get versus obedience to parents' rules. Or how straightforward weshould be in conversations versus trying to be more subtle and polite. My parents definitely believe in being more gentle with criticism, while Emma's dad has no problem telling it right to her face if he thinks she messed up. He says "brutal honestly" helps people improve, but all that bluntness would be considered extremely rude in my culture. It's not just families that shape mindsets though - schools play a big role too. At my school, the American students seem to be encouraged to explore and question things way more than I was used to. They're always putting their hands up to debate concepts with the teacher or challenge ideas.Where I'm from, we're taught more to listen to and respect authorities like teachers and elders rather than question their knowledge. We try to absorb information like sponges instead of pushing back a lot. It's seen as arrogant for kids toact like they know better than their teachers. The American way does let kids develop more critical thinking skills at a younger age. But the Chinese way helps build virtues like humility and diligent study habits. I can see the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches! One of the biggest cross-cultural differences in thinking I've witnessed is about the role of individuals versus groups. American students tend to be praised a lot for individual achievement and standing out as a star. Teachers will call on the smartest kids a lot and celebrate their talents. In my Chinese schools, though, it was more about the whole class succeeding together at a strong, steady pace. The focus was on nobody falling behind while teachers gave blanket lessons to the entire group. There wasn't as much differentiation or showcasing individual students. Both ways have upsides - the American approach lets brilliant kids shine and get opportunities to accelerate. But the Chinese way emphasizes unity, solidarity and not leaving anyone behind or stigmatized for struggling. It avoids unhealthy classroom hierarchies and toxic competition between students. So as you can see, something as simple as your cultural upbringing can deeply influence the very fundamentals of how you view the world! Like the tensions between individualism and collectivism, respecting authority or questioning it, "brutal honesty" or polite tact, and so many other values. It's been quite mind-expanding for me to be exposed to the American cultural mindsets through my classmates and see howtheir approaches differ from my Chinese roots. Our cultural lenses act like invisible goggles, tinting how we perceive and interpret everything in life.I've realized these differences in thinking are kind of like different tools in a toolbox - there's space for multiple perspectives because certain mindsets work better in some contexts than others. The key is staying open-minded enough to appreciate the value in contrasting worldviews rather than just getting stubborn that your way is the only way.At the end of the day, a little cultural cross-pollination and flexibility in our thinking is probably the healthiest approach. That's how we keep growing, learning and evolving as humans! If we all thought in exactly the same way, imagine how stunted and static the world would be. Culture may divide us in some ways, but it's also what makes humanity rich, vibrant and dynamic.篇2Here's an essay on cultural differences leading to different ways of thinking, written in English with a tone suitable for elementary school students, and around 2000 words long. The World is a Big, Colorful PlaceHave you ever met someone who thinks very differently from you? Maybe they do things in a way that seems strange or confusing. Well, that's because people from different cultures often have different ways of looking at the world!Let me tell you a story. Last year, my family and I went on a trip to visit my aunt and uncle in India. It was my first time traveling so far from home, and I was super excited! But when we got there, a lot of things felt very different and new to me.First of all, the food was nothing like what we eat at home. In India, they use a lot of spices like curry, cumin, and turmeric. The flavors were so strong and delicious, but also quite unfamiliar to my American taste buds. My aunt made us this dish called biryani, which was rice cooked with meat, vegetables, and aromatic spices. I had never tasted anything like it before!Another thing that felt really different was how people dressed. In the city we visited, many women wore beautiful, colorful saris – long pieces of fabric that they wrap around their bodies in an elegant way. The men often wore kurtas, which are long shirts that hang down to the knees. Back home, we usually just wear t-shirts and jeans, so this was a whole new fashion experience for me!But perhaps the biggest difference I noticed was in how people behaved and interacted with each other. In India, it's considered very rude to say "no" directly to someone, especially elders or people in authority. Instead, they might give an indirect answer or make excuses. For example, if my aunt offered me more food and I was full, I learned that it's better to say something like "Thank you, I'm quite satisfied" instead of just saying "No, thanks."This was really confusing for me at first because in my culture, we're taught to be direct and honest in our communication. But in India, being indirect is a way of showing respect and preserving harmony in relationships.Another thing I found interesting was how physical contact between people is viewed differently. In my American culture, we tend to keep a bit of personal space and don't touch each other too much, unless we're really close friends or family. But in India, it's totally normal for people to stand quite close together and make physical contact, like putting an arm around someone's shoulder or holding hands with friends of the same gender. At first, I felt a bit uncomfortable with all this closeness, but then I realized it was just a cultural difference in how people express friendship and affection.Seeing all these differences made me realize how big and diverse the world is! Even though we're all human beings, the way we think, behave, and view the world can vary so much depending on where we're from and the culture we grew up in.It's kind of like having different pairs of glasses that shape how we see things. My Indian cousins and I were looking at the same world, but through slightly different lenses shaped by our cultural backgrounds. And you know what? That's totally okay! In fact, it's wonderful that we have all these diverse cultures and perspectives. It would be so boring if we all thought and acted exactly the same way.The key is to approach these differences with an open mind and a willingness to learn and understand. Instead of judging or thinking one way is better than the other, we can simply appreciate the richness and variety that different cultures bring to our human experience. When I went back home, I tried to share some of the things I learned about Indian culture with my friends and classmates. I brought in some Indian snacks for them to try, and taught them a few words in Hindi, the main language spoken in India. Some of them thought the food was too spicy or the language sounded funny at first. But once I explained the cultural context and meanings behind these things, they started to appreciate and respect the differences more.I also made an effort to be more mindful and respectful of cultural differences in my own community. For example, there's a family in our neighborhood that recently moved from Japan. Instead of thinking their customs or way of life is weird, I try to approach it with curiosity and an open mind, just like I wanted others to do when I shared about my experiences in India. The world is such an amazingly diverse place, filled with countless cultures, traditions, and ways of seeing things. And you know what? That's what makes it so special and interesting! Imagine how boring it would be if we all thought and acted exactly the same way.So the next time you encounter someone who seems to think or behave differently from you, don't be too quick to judge or dismiss it as strange. Instead, try to understand where they're coming from and appreciate the cultural richness they bring to the table.Who knows, you might just learn something new and exciting about the world we all share!篇3Different Thinking from Different CulturesHave you ever noticed how some of your classmates think differently than you? Maybe they approach problems in a unique way or have habits that seem strange to you. A big reason for these differences is culture. The cultures we grow up in shape how we see the world and how we think about things.I'll give you some examples from my own experience. One of my best friends is named Xiaoming. His parents are from China, but he was born here just like me. Even though we've grown up in the same town and go to the same school, there are some interesting differences in how we think because of our cultural backgrounds. One difference is how we view individual success versus group success. In my family, we're taught that it's important to be independent and achieve your own goals. My parents encouraged me to develop my unique talents and interests from a young age. But in Xiaoming's family, there is more emphasis on fitting in with the group and bringing honor to the whole family.Xiaoming told me that in China, students are expected to work together more and the best students are those who canunite the class. But in American culture, being a bit of an individual and standing out is often praised. At school, we have a lot of activities and games that are about personal achievement and competition between individuals. This cultural difference shows up in how Xiaoming and I approach group projects. I usually want to take charge and do things my own way to make sure I get a good grade. But Xiaoming is much more concerned about keeping harmony in the group. He'll go along with what others want, even if he disagrees, because he doesn't want to disrupt the unity of the team.Another example is how we think about respect for elders and authorities. In my household, we're encouraged to question things and form our own opinions, even if it means disagreeing with adults or people in charge. But Xiaoming has been taught never to talk back to his parents, grandparents or teachers. He sees it as being very disrespectful.Sometimes this difference makes me frustrated when we're working on schoolwork together. If I disagree with something the teacher said, I'll challenge it and ask questions. But Xiaoming accepts it completely because he sees the teacher as an ultimateauthority who must be obeyed. It's hard for us to understand each other's perspectives. Our cultural backgrounds also affect how we communicate. American culture values very direct communication - we're supposed to say exactly what we mean. But in Xiaoming's family, communication is often more indirect to avoid hurting someone's feelings or causing embarrassment.Like when I was at Xiaoming's house and his mom offered me a drink, I just said "No thanks" because I wasn't thirsty. But Xiaoming explained later that in Chinese culture, you're supposed to politely accept it first, even if you don't want it, because a direct "no" is considered rude. He said I should have said "You're too kind, but I've already had plenty to drink." Little things like that show how different cultures have different rules for communication. The biggest cultural difference I've noticed with Xiaoming, though, is how we think about the role of individuals versus groups. American culture really values the individual - being unique and independent is seen as positive. But in Chinese culture, there's more emphasis on blending into a group and not standing out too much. For example, I love drawing attention to myself by sharing my ideas in class, even if they're a bit wacky sometimes. But Xiaoming is much more reserved because he doesn't want to do anything that might disrupt the classroom harmony. When he does share an idea, it's after a lot of hesitation because he's worried about looking silly or disrespecting the teacher. In my family, my parents are always saying things like "Just be yourself!" and "Don't be afraid to stand out from the crowd!" They want me to have a strong individual identity. But in Xiaoming's home, the focus is more on fitting in, mastering discipline, and knowing your role in the greater community. These cultural differences don't just affect how we act - they also influence how we actually think about things. Because I was raised to be an individual, I tend to make decisions based on what I personally want and value. But Xiaoming is always considering how his choices will impact his whole family and the other groups he belongs to.When we have to pick teammates for games at school, I'll usually choose the most talented kids to build the best team for myself. Xiaoming, though, tries to keep friend groups together because he prioritizes group harmony and loyalty over individual performance. It's not that one approach is right and the other iswrong - we just think about it differently because of our cultural lenses.Even our personalities seem affected by our cultural upbringings. Many of the American kids in our class are quite outgoing, animated, and enthusiastic about sharing their thoughts. We're taught to have strong voices and big personalities. But lots of kids from East Asian backgrounds like Xiaoming are more conservative, reserved, and deferential to others, especially elders. They value modesty, humility, and keeping thoughts and feelings subdued. When we're all together, you can clearly see those cultural patterns playing out.Overall, I've learned that cultural factors have a huge influence on how we see the world and approach things like group work, communication, respecting authorities, and finding the right balance between individual and group priorities. Differences aren't bad - they just illustrate how diverse human thinking can be based on the cultures we grow up in.I'm really glad I have a friend like Xiaoming who can help me understand cultural viewpoints that are different from my own American one. Having an open mind about other cultures makes me appreciate how复杂人类思维的差异源于丰富多彩的文化背景.我希望在接受教育的过程中,我们都能对彼此的差异持开放包容的心态,因为正是这些差异折射出人类智慧的多元性和生动性。

Different Culture in Different Country

Different Culture in Different Country Different country has different culture, and every country loves their own culture and protect it,also, they hate people who do something that is opposite to their culture. Now,globalization is developing quickly, more and more people travel to other countries, some people even settle in the foreign. If you want to know a country well and make friends with the local people when you come to the foreign,to learn their culture and integrate into their culture is a very effective way. So,to know other countries’ cultures is important to us.But,what special culture every country has that we don’t know? And what differences between different cultures? Now,Let us start with some cases and .Case1:About the white dress. The Indian women think it will be dressed when someone go to a funeral, but the western women will be willing to wear the white dress in their wedding.Case analysis:The wearing of the local people is not only a wearing that you look.People will wear different dress when they stay in different situation, and it is depended on their culture. So,when you in India ,you must remember not to wear a white dress to attend someone’s wedding ,or you will be look as an unlucky person and be hated.Case2:Joe is a student in American university, he made friends with Liu ,a Chinese visiting scholar in his university. When Joe came to China,he was invited to Liu’s family. At frist,Joe felt very happy to this invitation, but, things were not easy as he thought. When he went to Liu’s family,Liu’s mother prepared many delicious food to entertain him.But Liu’s mother gave Joe too much food that Joe felt very very full, when Joe said he was too full to eat, Liu’s mother continue to give him food enthusiastically.Joe was too polite to refuse,so after this dinner,Joe felt too full and uncomfortable. Then,Liu gave him the itinerary for the next day.Apart from the lectures, all his time would be filled with meals, shopping, concerts, and a one day trip to a nearby resort and all paid for by L iu’s family.Joe had thought he would have time to explore the city and the area, but the itinerary would leave him no free time.Joe wasgrateful to Liu’s family who took good care of him during his visit. At the end of the visit,he insisted on treating Liu’s family to thank them. But they said a dinner had been arranged.Joe felt frustrated and he was not happy after this visiting in China.Case analysis:Liu’s family was too hospitable, they would feel happy to entertain their friends thoughtfully.Joe is an American, maybe he was never invited so enthusiastically,so he felt very uncomfortable and he did not know how to solve this problem. Chinese is very hospitable, and sometimes this enthusiasm will make others feel uncomfortable and others will feel too polite to refuse them.Maybe host will feel satisfied with themselves, but guest maybe not. So,as Chinese, when you entertain foreigners you should learn not to be so hospitable, you should give their more free time to visit by themselves. And as foreigners to come to China, you should learn to be accustomed to their hospitality, and when your host is too enthusiastic, you should not be nervous and uncomfortable, you should say directly to your host:”I’m full,I do not want to eat anything.I want to go some visitings by myself,Can you give me some advice about visiting?”Chinese is friendly, they will know what you feel and give you suitable entertainment to you.Case3:This is a quarrel between a Chinese student Li Hua and an American student Smith. As they argue fiercely,Li Hua stopped talking ana giving any response to Smith’s angry words.Seeing that Li Hua was determined not to talk,Smith was getting more and more angry and later he left the room and said he can never understand what the Chinese are thinking about.Case Analysis:Different people has different way to express their anger. In this case,Li Hua express his anger by stopping talking and giving any response, and he tend to be cold by this way.But Smith express his anger by talking constantly, and he need a person to talk with, but Li Hua do not,so Smith feels more angry. So when we quarrel with others,if others do something we think they are still angry, maybenot, maybe they use their way to tend to be cold.At this time,we should not disturb others and make ourselves cold.Case4:Jack is an American. When he traveled to Greece,he saw a girl singing on the side of the road. The girl sang very well,he gave his all change to her,and he madethe thumb up sign to praise the girl. When the girl saw it,she gave all the change back to Jack angrily and left. Then, the others passing by all said Jack were so impolite!Jack felt very confused. He did not know the thumbs up signs in Greece means dirty words.Case Analysis:In the US,the thumbs up sign means “well done”or is commonly used by hitchhikers, but do not use it in Greece,Russia,Sardinia or West Africa, because you will be insulting the recipient with a hearty:”Up yours!”Different hand gestures mean different meanings in different countries, and they are influenced by their own culture. So when you come to another country,to know their nonverbal cultural communication is important,or you will be in confusion as Jack, even you will be hit if you use the wrong hand gesture. For example, many people use “V”sign to denote “victory”or”peace”in America or simply to refer to the number two,but use it in Great Britain,Australia,Ireland or New Zealand and you will basically be dropping the “F” bomb!Be careful with this.Case5:Hong,a Chinese girl.Peter,a American boy of Hong’s friend.WhenPe ter in China,he was invited to Hong’s grandfather’s birthday party. He was happy, and was prepared to a big gift to Hong’s grandfather. On that day, when Peter gave his gift to Hong’s grandfather, everyone felt shocked because he gave a lock to Hong’s grandfath er.Peter was good intentions at first, but he made a big mistake at last.Case Analysis:In Chinese, lock’s pronunciation is like death,so Lock is considered as an unlucky gift. This is a special cultural custom in China,so when you give gift to Chinese friends, lock is not suitable.Above all, different country has different culture,to know different culture is important for people in this era of globalization, but what we know about this is far from complete. We should learn more about the different culture from different country,it will help us to go further.。

文化差异的英语作文带翻译篇一:英语作文中美文化差异the differences and similarities between Chinese culture and American culturethe differences and similarities between Chinese culture and American culture Every country has their own culture, which can stand out their differences. There are lots of differences and similarities between Chinese culture and American culture. As for the difference, firstly, cultural differences on politeness between American and Chinese can be found in many aspects of daily communication, including addressing, greeting and parting, compliments, apologies, thanks and so on. For example, when people meet acquaintances or friends, people usually greet each other. In America, people often employ the following expressions to greet each other "Good morning/evening/afternoon. or "Fine day, isn't it? While in Chinese, we always say "have you eaten since and "where are you going? to show our consideration. Secondly, it's communication. A majority of Chinese people are accustomed starting the ritual interaction that goes with a welcoming cup of tea. In China no majorbusiness is conducted without eye contact, requiring face-to-face conversation. However, in America, a final agreement will normally be signed in person. However, people are meeting increasingly on television screens, conducting teleconferences to settle problems not only in this country but also-by satellite-internationally.In spite of they have these differences, they have some similarities. In the china we think when we do some important things, we must spendsome. American for the most part costs a part time in important things. So in the culture of deal to in significant things, China and America has some similarities. In my opinion, we must respect the different culture.篇二:中西方文化差异英语作文In my view, it is not surprising that Mr. Jones and Mr. Wang had a so unpleasant conversation, because it caused by the different culture between East and West.Modesty is one of the national characters of Chinese people, which can be proved by those stories about modesty in the history of China. When praised in public, the Chinese may deny it to show the modesty, though he is happy to hear that. However, the Westerner may just say “thank you”to express happiness. If I were Mr. Wang, I would say “Thank you for your praise, and Iwill keep working hard to do better”. As far as I am concerned, excessive modesty is just hubris, so we should receive the praise with happiness and do better. If I were the boss, I would study the different culture more to understand the staff. As the old saying goes, do in Rome as Rome does. So only if the boss know the difference in the culture and do the right things, can he motivate the staff more appropriately to make more money.篇三:英语作文-东西方文化差异-Cultural differencesCultural differencesThere are plenty of. people in the world. They come from different countried, have theirown race, belief and way of life. What is more, their culture is different from others'. So,there is no doubt that cultural difference exist among lots of countries, especially betweeneastern and western countries.Compared with the way of life, eastern people always have a bath in the evening or atnight in order to relax themselves after one-day's hard work while western people take abath in the morning. so as to keep freshly for the whole day. Ingeneral, it is true, especially for Chinese people. We, Chinese people would like to take baths at night ratherthan in the morning. It is a kind of habits we behave all the time.Compared with the relationships, differences are as follow: firstly, eastern people like tomake friends, sometimes through their friends, parents, relatives. While western peoplebehave a little shyly. They do not want to make friends all the time. Secondly, easternpeople would like to hang out with the person they do not know about quite a lot. whilewestern people just like going out with the person whom they get along well with. Finally, eastern people have much more friends than western people for their quitedifferent way of getting along with. their friends. There is no doubt that eastern peopleare more outgoing than western people, so I agree with these a lot.As for way of solving problems, eastern people always deal with things indirectly. Theypay much attention to many things around them, and always workfor a long time to solvethe problem. However, western people just go straight the heart of the problem and solveit directly and efficiently. As far as I am concerned, this difference between eastern andwestern people is quite normal and correct. Eastern people, especially Chinese peoplecare about things around them a lot, they always want to satisfy everyone's need, so thatthey spend much more time to solve a problem than western people. As for way of thinking, people in eastern areas usually think indirectly. They used tothink about the things around them a lot and try to deal with things in a reasonable evenperfect way. However, in comparison with the eastern people, people in the western areasoften think directly. They pay less attention to the things around them and care muchmore about themselves. Honestly speaking, I disagree to this.In my opinion, everyone isspecial and has their right and obligations to do things. There isno need for us to critiseothers and what we should do is to respect their own. decision. There are a lot of differences between easte(转自: 千叶帆文摘:文化差异的英语作文带翻译)rn and western culture. These are the symbolsof their own characteristics and we need time to dig out more differences so as to learnmore about them. Most importantly, we must respect their culture firstly!。

different cultures between china and west

different cultures between china and west

Different Culture between China and WestAbstraction:Culture is the all and the one which consist by social behavior, art, beliefs, customs transmission through society conduct and all other products of human work and thinking . Each national’s special culture mode comes out of the speech and behavior of that race by all means. And so the cultures betweenChina and Western world are distinguished by a rather large scale. This paper focuses on these differences by the comparisons with Chinese and Westerncultures in a mount of aspects.ValuesAs we all know, Western culture is based on individualism rather than on collectivism, which existed mainly in China. For instance, in the US, you always talk about individual rights, instead of placing the whole society above your own self. This is clearly different in China where great importance is attached to a person's conformity instead of their uniqueness. Consequently, people are not likely to socialize in ways that draw attention to the self. Standing outon one’s own is not favored and would even arouse criticism from the others in our country. We are afraid to be different from others, even during communication. This stops us to express and talk freely and everyone believes “silence is gold” at last. In this case, to be promoted to the position of deputy director means not only responsibility but also uniqueness and fame. But in western culture, in which value is based on individualism, everyone is considered as special and unique. They are expected talking freely and expressing what they think overwhelmingly, without any constrains. This tendsto embody the spirit of openness and democracy, lifting the own value of human being for the overall development of human being and the advancement of Society.PolitenessIn western world, politeness lays focus on interpersonal equality and cooperation. On the contrary, In China, politeness owns four primary elements: respectfulness, modesty, attitude and refinement. And among so many factors, greeting is the first step to politeness, and farthelly, form a culture, because people begin to communicate with others. For instance, Informally, if we meet a friend in the street, we are used to say: “Hi, have you had your meal?” When it is the case of two gentlemen, they tend to shake hands. However,in the western countries, when asked the same question, he may think you’re inviting him to dinner. In addition, Westerners can leave a party or meeting halls without a formal conge, nor should they shake hands with every attendee like most of us will do in China.Table mannerWhen coming with this topic, it’s eas ily to emerge one word--- wine, which plays an important role in the daily life.As regards the wine culture,th ere exists difference between China and the western countries. The raw material and drinking custom is different in terms of geography. Chinese people like “baijiu” while westerners select wine as their favor. In China, when drinking and eating, red wine with fish or white wine with beef is the mostselection. While for many westerners, cheeses are made specifically for consumption with wine. In spite ofdifference, there also exist similarities. Both China and western countries have some beautiful legends about the origin of wine and the symbol wine of spirit, leading to the birth of romanticism and the development of mainstream belief. Thedevelopment of world wine culture depends on the intercommunication of diffe rent nations.Another topic is chopsticks. Because of using chopsticks, instead of using spoon, when Chinese people having rice or soup;it’s likely for us to hold up our bowls. But this habit is considered rude in the Western countries. But we cannot deny any of the remarks, instead, we should get to learn how to coordinate the different cultures on so called Table manner. The etiquette in the West requests that when eating, bowls and plates cannot leave the tables. Food should be cut by knives to fit into the mouths. Of course your mouth cannot touch the plates or bowls. So the regular process is like this. You cut your steak on the plate with fork and knife, send the meat cube into the mouth with fork and nothing will be returned back but the fork alone.Expressing gratitudeIn Chinese families, we rarely say “Thank you” to other family members for receiving help or service. Neither will we sa y so between good friends. It’s such an unpopular response that if you say it, the counterpart will think you are treating him as a stranger, otherwise you are lacking of intimacy. However, in the Western world, "thank you" is one of the most frequently used sentences. Teachers will thank a student for answering a question; husbands will thank hiswife for making a coffee. Sisters will thank her brothers for opening a window. And so on. Even in geographical eastern country, usually Japan, it’s a custom to say "thank you", as an interesting phenomenon, no matter in family or among friends, Japanese chronically use it all the day.SymbolizingSymbolization, somewhat like value, is how people imagine or regard something. It actually reflects the way people th ink. Here’s an example: Dragons, thatall Chinese are pride of,are imagined as something like snake and are flowingin the sky for most of the time. We regard dragon as God and say that we Chinese are the offspring of the dragon. But in the West, people think dragons as dinosaurs, which can stand on the ground with feet and fly with huge wings. The dragons of the West have the ability to erupt fire, destroying everythingso the dragons are not welcomed at all. They even become the symbol of the Devil, as in their opinions.Another difference is about meanings of color we feel. People always have preference when choosing colors of clothes, decorations, etc. Just think of the colors of the suits were chosen. We can choose them by ourselves freely. However, it’s quite interesting to find that most Easterners chose red while most of the westerners preferred blue. To explain this, it’s easy to realize that what red means is almost opposite in the East and the West. Red means luck, fortune here. We Chinese often use this color to decorate in festivals, such as red lanterns, red Chinese nodes, red bangers. But red stands for blood, revolutions in the West. So red is regarded an unlucky color in West. Conclusion:Now we have seen that there exists significant diversity between Chinese and Western cultures. Though there doesn’t exist correctness in terms of culture,it does have the terms of more advanced or more suitable for the world nowadays. We cannot deny any of the cultures Of course and should get to learn how to coordinate the different cultures and perfect our own, because differentcultures add the most colorful element to the world around us. Maybe the civilization of human being and the motivation of our going farther are themost concerned topic that we share.。

文化差异的英语作文Title: Understanding Cultural Differences。

Culture is a multifaceted aspect of human society, encompassing traditions, beliefs, values, and behaviorsthat shape how individuals perceive and interact with the world around them. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, understanding cultural differences has become more crucial than ever before. In this essay, wewill delve into the significance of cultural differences and explore strategies for fostering cross-cultural understanding.First and foremost, it's essential to recognize that cultural differences exist on various levels, including but not limited to language, customs, social norms, and communication styles. These differences can manifest in subtle nuances or more profound disparities, influencing interpersonal relationships, business practices, and societal structures. For instance, while directcommunication may be valued in some cultures for itsclarity and efficiency, others may prioritize indirect communication to preserve harmony and avoid confrontation. One of the most significant challenges posed bycultural differences is the potential for misunderstanding and misinterpretation. When individuals from different cultural backgrounds interact, there is a risk of misconstruing gestures, expressions, or words due to cultural context. These misunderstandings can lead to conflict, confusion, or even offense if not addressed with sensitivity and open-mindedness. Therefore, cultivating cultural competence is essential for navigating diverse social landscapes and fostering meaningful connections across cultures. So, how can we bridge the gap between cultures and promote mutual understanding? One approach is through education and exposure to different cultural perspectives. By learning about the history, traditions, and values of other cultures, individuals can gain insights into the underlying motivations and behaviors of people from diversebackgrounds. This knowledge serves as a foundation for empathy and respect, allowing individuals to navigate cultural differences with curiosity rather than judgment. Moreover, effective communication is key to navigating cultural differences successfully. This entails not only linguistic proficiency but also an awareness of nonverbal cues, such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. In cross-cultural interactions, individuals should strive to listen actively, clarify assumptions, and express themselves clearly and respectfully. Additionally, being open to feedback and willing to adapt one's communication style to accommodate cultural differences can facilitate smoother intercultural communication.Another strategy for promoting cross-cultural understanding is through intercultural dialogue and collaboration. By bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to work towards common goals, organizations and communities can leverage the richness of cultural diversity to foster creativity, innovation, and mutual learning. Through collaborative endeavors, individuals can gain firsthand experience in navigating cultural differences, building trust, and forgingmeaningful relationships based on shared values and objectives.Furthermore, it's essential to recognize and challenge cultural stereotypes and biases that can hinderintercultural understanding. Stereotypes oversimplify and generalize complex cultural identities, perpetuating misconceptions and prejudice. By challenging stereotypesand embracing cultural diversity in all its complexity, individuals can cultivate a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone's unique perspectives are valued and respected. In conclusion, cultural differences are an inherent aspect of human society, shaping our identities, interactions, and worldview. While these differences may pose challenges, they also present opportunities for growth, learning, and collaboration. By fostering cultural competence, embracing diversity, and engaging in opendialogue, we can bridge the gap between cultures and build a more interconnected and harmonious world.。

Different culture

Different culture

Different culture, different actionThe writer believes that it is misunderstanding between different cultures that causes the "rude Chinese tourist". I agree with him. There are plenty of people around the world. They are from different countries, having their own races, beliefs and ways of life. Furthermore, their culture is different from others'.So,there is no doubt that cultural difference exists among lots of countries, especially between eastern and western countries.Because of the difference, many things which we are accustomed to become rude behaviors abroad. Take an example,we are disgusted because we are loud when we have meals. Nevertheless they ignore that it is our habit. Chinese like eating together and communicating on the table, liking loud atmosphere, but western people tend to eat quietly. Thus,we are disliked by western people and labeled as loud.Recently there was a 15-year-old student carving his name on a3500-year-old Egyptian temple, and threw Chinese tourists into the center of public anger. Many Chinese at home feel ashamed and they criticized the boy sharply. To this thing,I just want to say we do the same thing for the most part just like the boy do. Having the whole China in view, how many tourists have ever written their name or other characters on the places of interests? The popular TV play-Journey to the West plays every year and loved by many children. I don't know whether you remember a scene in it. Sun Wukong made a bet with Buddha. When he arrived at the t'ien chu he thought,he wrote his name on one of the pillars.Besides,he defecated under the pillar. Maybe you will say Sun Wukong is a monkey, not people. But to children,he is a hero. What's more, our ancestors often wrote down their poems on the wall whenever they got the spirit. It is our tradition to leave our footprint at many places. We want to make it become our memory. Children just learn from us. I believe the boy didn't realize his mistake before people criticizing him. Maybe he felt wronged when people shouted at him because too many people do the same thing at home but they didn't be shouted.Twenty years ago, western visitors to China were often accused of being rude and arrogant. We thought they weren't cooperative enough, always demanding their rights. It is also because of the different cultures. Western people pursue human rights and personal, advocating freedom,so they always ask for their rights. On the contrary, eastern people have a gentle nature. We pursue harmonious life. So as long as others didn't violate our base line,we demand our rights rarely. Each place has its streams in from all over the country. Different cultural backgrounds cause different behaviors. However, it is because of our difference that the world becomes so nice. In my opinion, everyone is special and has their rights and freedom to do things. There is no need for us to criticize others andwhat we should do is respecting their own chooses. But as for ourselves,to respect the local people,we should "Do in Rome as Rome does" . All in all, whether eastern people or western people,we should communicatemore, understand more and respect more, like the writer said-build bridges of understanding through changes made from both sides. Only in this way,we can remove the misunderstanding and eliminate the prejudice.。

It is also appropriate to ask how they prefer to be addressed. Children should always address adults in the formal fashion, using their title and last name. Another difference is about the form of addressing. From the viewpoint of sociolinguistics, forms of addressing can serve as an indication of the relationship of power and solidarity in the society. In calling their superiors or elders, the Chinese are accustomed to the nonreciprocal or asymmetrical addressing, in other words. They use “title +surname” to address their superior or elders rather than call them surnames, while the superior or elders call the addressers their names. The Chinese tend to abide by the polite principle of depreciating oneself and respecting others to show appropriate respects towards the persons being addressed, otherwise, the addresser may be considered as ill mannered, ill educated or rude. But in English speaking countries, people have a tendency to follow the reciprocal or symmetrical addressing. Although they are different in age and status, they can call the other directly, namely, their names, even first names except when they call the doctors, not arousing offence between them, but demonstrating the sense of intimacy and the conception of” Everyone is created equal” . Chi nese people feel unnatural addressing a westerner by his given name, feeling that it indicates too close a relationship, and westerners, on the otherhand, may feel that if a Chinese insists on using his surname, it indicates an unwillingness to be friendly and maintains a gap between them. So the use of forms like” Miss Mary” or “Mr. Smith ” may be a Chinese forms of compromise. With Miss Mary, the use of the given name indicates friendliness, but the addition of the title indicates the respect they feel they ought to show. And with Smith, the lack of a title indicates friendliness, but the use of the surname prevents if sounding too intimate. However, both addressing used by the Chinese sound very strange and uncomfortable to the westerner. pliments and ResponseTo compliment is to praise the addressee’s virtues, ability, behavior, appearance, clothing, personality and belongs. Appropriate compliments can serve as effective supplementary means in inter-personal communication. Western and Chinese culture are at polar opposites about compliment. An western hostess, if she is complimented for her cooking skill, is likely to say,” Oh, I am so glad that you liked it. I cook it especially for you.” Not so is a Chinese hostess, who will instead apologize for gi ving you “Nothing”. They will say“随便作几个菜,不好吃。

不同文化之间的人会产生误解英语作文

不同文化之间的人会产生误解英语作文全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1Cultural Misunderstandings Between People of Different CulturesWe live in an increasingly globalized world where interactions between people from diverse cultural backgrounds are becoming more and more common. With this increased cross-cultural contact, misunderstandings and miscommunications are almost inevitable. As a student who has had the opportunity to interact with individuals from various cultures, I have come to realize that cultural differences can lead to significant misunderstandings and even conflicts if not properly acknowledged and addressed. One of the primary reasons for cultural misunderstandings is the difference in communication styles. Communication is not just about the words we use but also involves nonverbal cues, such as body language, gestures, and facial expressions. What may be considered appropriate or polite in one culture could be perceived as rude or offensive in another. For instance, in somecultures, maintaining direct eye contact during a conversation is seen as a sign of respect and attentiveness, while in others, it may be interpreted as a challenge or a lack of respect.Language barriers can also contribute to cultural misunderstandings. Even if two individuals speak the same language, they may use different idioms, slang, or cultural references that can lead to confusion or misinterpretation. I remember an incident when a classmate from Asia described something as "very cheesy," which was misunderstood by a friend from South America as a positive remark since cheese is a beloved ingredient in their cuisine. Such linguistic nuances can easily cause misunderstandings, especially when communicating across cultures.Cultural values and beliefs can also play a significant role in shaping perceptions and behaviors, leading to misunderstandings. Some cultures place a high value on individualism, while others prioritize collectivism. These contrasting values can manifest in different ways, such as decision-making processes, conflict resolution strategies, and interpersonal relationships. For example, in individualistic cultures, assertiveness and directness may be valued, while incollectivistic cultures, indirect communication and maintaining group harmony may be more important.Another aspect that can contribute to cultural misunderstandings is the concept of personal space and physical contact. In some cultures, physical proximity and touch are welcomed and seen as signs of closeness and affection, while in others, maintaining a larger personal space is preferred, and physical contact may be viewed as intrusive or inappropriate. As a student, I have witnessed numerous instances of cultural misunderstandings among my peers. One particular incident that stands out is when a group of international students was discussing holiday traditions. A student from a Western culture expressed confusion and even mild offense at the practice of giving money as a gift during certain holidays in Asian cultures. The Asian students tried to explain the cultural significance behind this tradition, but the misunderstanding persisted due to differing cultural perspectives on gift-giving etiquette. However, cultural misunderstandings should not be viewed as insurmountable obstacles but rather as opportunities for learning and growth. By approaching these situations with an open mind, empathy, and a willingness to understand differentperspectives, we can turn misunderstandings into valuable learning experiences. One way to mitigate cultural misunderstandings is to actively seek knowledge and understanding about different cultures. Reading books, watching documentaries, and engaging in respectful conversations with individuals from diverse backgrounds can provide valuable insights into their customs, beliefs, and ways of life.Additionally, developing effective intercultural communication skills is crucial. This includes being aware of one's own cultural biases and assumptions, practicing active listening, and asking clarifying questions when faced with unfamiliar behaviors or practices. It is also important to be mindful of nonverbal cues and to adjust one's communication style accordingly.Furthermore, educational institutions play a vital role in fostering cultural understanding and promoting effective intercultural communication. Universities and colleges can create opportunities for students to engage with diverse cultures through international exchange programs, cultural events, and courses focused on intercultural studies. By exposing students to different cultural perspectives and providing them with the toolsto navigate cultural differences, educational institutions can equip them with the skills necessary to thrive in a globally interconnected world. In conclusion, cultural misunderstandings are a natural consequence of the increasing cross-cultural interactions in our globalized world. However, by acknowledging and embracing cultural differences, seeking knowledge and understanding, developing effective intercultural communication skills, and fostering an environment of mutual respect and empathy, we can overcome these misunderstandings and build bridges between cultures. As students and future global citizens, it is our responsibility to cultivate cultural awareness and appreciation, as this will not only enrich our personal and professional lives but also contribute to a more harmonious and inclusive society.篇2Misunderstandings Between Different CulturesAs a student who has had the opportunity to interact with people from various cultural backgrounds, I have come to realize that misunderstandings between different cultures are not only common but also inevitable. Cultural differences can manifest themselves in numerous ways, from language barriers tocontrasting values and beliefs, making communication and mutual understanding a challenging endeavor. One of the primary causes of misunderstandings between cultures is language. Language is not merely a means of communication but also a reflection of a culture's values, beliefs, and worldviews. Words and phrases that may seem innocuous in one culture can carry entirely different connotations in another. For instance, the concept of personal space varies greatly across cultures, leading to potential miscommunications when it comes to physical proximity during conversations.Furthermore, nonverbal cues, such as gestures, facial expressions, and body language, can be interpreted differently in different cultures. What may be considered a friendly gesture in one culture could be perceived as rude or disrespectful in another. This disconnect in nonverbal communication can lead to unintended offense or confusion, making it challenging to establish a rapport and build meaningful connections.Beyond language barriers, misunderstandings can also arise from contrasting cultural values and belief systems. Cultures have distinct perspectives on topics such as family dynamics, gender roles, work ethics, and social hierarchies. For example, in some cultures, maintaining harmony and saving face is of utmostimportance, while in others, directness and confrontation are more highly valued. These conflicting values can lead to misinterpretations and clashes, particularly in professional or academic settings.Additionally, cultural differences can manifest in various aspects of life, including customs, traditions, and social norms. What may be considered appropriate or polite in one culture could be seen as impolite or offensive in another. For instance, the notion of punctuality varies across cultures, with some placing a higher emphasis on strict adherence to schedules, while others adopt a more relaxed approach. As a student, I have witnessed countless instances of misunderstandings stemming from cultural differences. During group projects or class discussions, contrasting communication styles and perspectives can lead to misinterpretations and frustrations. Individuals from more direct cultures may perceive those from indirect cultures as evasive or lacking clarity, while those from indirect cultures may view direct communication as confrontational or rude. Moreover, cultural differences can manifest in educational settings through varying learning styles and expectations. Some cultures prioritize individual achievement and competitiveness, while others emphasize collective efforts and cooperation. These contrasting approaches can create tensions and misunderstandings, particularly when it comes to group assignments or collaborative projects.Overcoming these cultural misunderstandings requires a concerted effort from all parties involved. Firstly, it is crucial to cultivate an openness and willingness to learn about and appreciate different cultures. By embracing cultural diversity and recognizing the richness it brings, we can foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding.Furthermore, effective cross-cultural communication skills are essential. This includes developing an awareness of cultural nuances, actively listening, and seeking clarification when faced with ambiguity. It is also important to suspend judgment and refrain from making assumptions based on one's own cultural lens.Educational institutions play a pivotal role in promoting cross-cultural understanding and equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate cultural differences. Incorporating cultural sensitivity training, facilitating intercultural dialogues, and encouraging diversity in student populations can go a long way in fostering a inclusive and respectful environment.Ultimately, embracing cultural diversity and addressing misunderstandings between cultures is not only beneficial for personal growth but also critical for fostering a more harmonious and interconnected global community. As students, we have the unique opportunity to learn from one another, challenge our preconceptions, and develop the cultural competence necessary to thrive in an increasingly diverse world. In conclusion, misunderstandings between different cultures are inevitable, but they can be overcome throughopen-mindedness, effective communication, and a genuine desire to understand and appreciate cultural differences. By embracing diversity and cultivating cross-cultural competence, we can build bridges of understanding and create a more inclusive and harmonious society.篇3Misunderstandings Between Different CulturesWe live in an increasingly globalized world where interactions between people from diverse cultural backgrounds have become the norm. While this interconnectedness presents numerous opportunities for cultural exchange and enrichment, it also heightens the potential for misunderstandings and conflictsarising from cultural differences. As a student navigating this complex landscape, I have come to appreciate the significance of cultural awareness and the challenges that can arise when individuals from distinct cultural contexts fail to recognize and respect these variations. One of the primary sources of cross-cultural misunderstandings lies in the realm of communication. Language, both verbal and nonverbal, plays a pivotal role in how we express ourselves and interpret the expressions of others. Each culture has its unique linguistic nuances, idioms, and gestures that can be easily misconstrued by those unfamiliar with them. For instance, the concept of personal space varies dramatically across cultures, with some valuing close physical proximity during conversations, while others prefer a greater degree of distance. Failure to recognize and adapt to these divergent norms can lead to discomfort, offense, or even mistaken assumptions about the other party's intentions. Moreover, cultural differences in values, beliefs, and customs can further exacerbate misunderstandings. What is considered respectful or appropriate in one cultural context may be perceived as rude or offensive in another. For example, the act of maintaining direct eye contact during conversations is viewed asa sign of attentiveness and honesty in some cultures, while in others, it is regarded as disrespectful or even confrontational. These discrepancies in cultural norms can result in unintended breaches of etiquette, causing confusion, frustration, or even damaging relationships.Another significant factor contributing to cross-cultural misunderstandings is the tendency to view the world through the lens of one's own cultural biases and assumptions. This phenomenon, often referred to as ethnocentrism, can lead individuals to unconsciously judge or evaluate the behaviors and practices of other cultures based on their own cultural standards. This narrow perspective can perpetuate stereotypes, prejudices, and a lack of empathy towards those who are culturally distinct, hindering effective communication and fostering misunderstandings. As a student immersed in a diverse academic environment, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges and consequences of cultural misunderstandings. Group projects, for instance, can become breeding grounds for conflicts when team members from different backgrounds fail to recognize and accommodate each other's cultural nuances. Misaligned expectations, communication breakdowns, and differing work styles canimpede collaboration, undermine team dynamics, and ultimately hinder the success of the project. However, these challenges also present valuable opportunities for personal growth and cultural understanding. Through my interactions with peers from various backgrounds, I have learned the importance of cultivating cultural sensitivity, openness, and a willingness to learn about and embrace different perspectives. By actively seeking to understand the cultural contexts that shape our values, beliefs, and behaviors, we can begin to bridge the gaps that often lead to misunderstandings.Effective cross-cultural communication requires a concerted effort to suspend judgment, actively listen, and strive to comprehend the underlying motivations and meanings behind cultural expressions. It involves developing empathy, flexibility, and a genuine curiosity about the richness of human diversity. By approaching interactions with an open mind and a willingness to learn, we can foster an environment of mutual understanding and respect, paving the way for more meaningful and enriching cross-cultural exchanges.Furthermore, educational institutions play a crucial role in promoting cultural awareness and equipping students with thenecessary skills to navigate the complexities of a multicultural world. Incorporating cross-cultural training, workshops, and immersive experiences into the curriculum can help students develop the knowledge, attitudes, and competencies required to effectively communicate and collaborate across cultural boundaries.Ultimately, the ability to navigate cross-cultural misunderstandings is an invaluable asset in our increasingly interconnected world. As a student, I recognize the importance of embracing cultural diversity and actively working to overcome the barriers that can arise from cultural differences. By cultivating a spirit of openness, empathy, and a genuine desire to understand and learn from one another, we can transform potential sources of conflict into opportunities for personal growth, global understanding, and the enrichment of our shared human experience.。

From the way people greet each other to the food they eat and the values they hold dear, every country has its own unique culture that sets it apart from the rest. In this essay, we will explore some of the key differences in cultures across different countries. One of the first things that you notice when you travel to a new country is the way people greet each other. In Western countries, a handshake is a common way to greet someone, while in Asian countries, bowing or a slight nod of the head is more typical. The food that people eat is not just a way to nourish their bodies; it is also a way to connect with their cultural heritage.Values and beliefs are also an important part of a country's culture. In some countries, such as the United States, individualism and self-reliance are highly valued, while in other countries, such as Japan, collectivism and group harmony are more important. In some countries, such as Sweden, equality and social welfare are highly valued, while in others, such as SaudiArabia, traditional values and gender roles are more prominent. These differences in values and beliefs shape how people interact with each other and with the world around them.In addition to these differences, there are many other aspects of culture that vary from country to country. For example, music and dance are important cultural expressions in many countries, with each culture having its own unique styles and traditions. In Ireland, traditional folk music is a popular form of expression, while in Brazil, samba and bossa nova are key parts of the cultural identity. Art and literature also play a crucial role in shaping a country's culture, with each country having its own unique styles and themes.Despite these differences, there are also many similarities in culture that connect people across borders. The spread of technology and globalization has also led to an increasing exchange of ideas, values, and traditions between countries, blurring the lines between different cultures. In conclusion, the diversity of cultures across different countries is what makes the world such a rich and vibrant place. Different cultures often clash and misunderstand each other, leading to discrimination and prejudice. In this essay, we will explore the topic of discrimination based on culture and discuss its implications on a global scale.First and foremost, it is important to understand that culture is a dynamic and complex concept that encompasses a wide range of beliefs, practices, and values. Each culture is unique and has its own traditions, languages, and customs. However, when different cultures come into contact with each other, there is often a clash of values and beliefs which can lead to discrimination. One of the most common forms of cultural discrimination is racism, which is the belief that one race is superior to others. This form of discrimination has been a long-standing issue in many societies, leading to violence, segregation, and systemicinequalities. For example, the history of colonialism and slavery has left a lasting legacy of racism and discrimination against people of color.Another form of cultural discrimination is xenophobia, which is the fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers. This form of discrimination often manifests itself in the form of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination against immigrants and refugees. In recent years, there has been a rise in xenophobia in many countries, leading to increased tensions and hostility towards immigrants.Furthermore, cultural discrimination can also take the form of cultural appropriation, which is the adoption of elements of one culture by members of another culture. This form of discrimination often results in the erasure of the original culture and the exploitation of its traditions for profit or entertainment. For example, the appropriation of Native American culture in fashion and music has led to backlash and criticism from indigenous communities. In conclusion, cultural discrimination is a complex and pervasive issue that has far-reaching implications on society. It is important for us to recognize and challenge our own biases and prejudices, and strive to create a more inclusive and equitableworld for all cultures. Cultures around the world have their own traditions, beliefs, and practices, and when one culture is perceived as superior to another, discrimination can occur. In this essay, we will explore the concept of cultural discrimination, its impact on individuals and societies, and what can be done to combat it.Cultural discrimination can take many forms, ranging from overt acts of racism and xenophobia to subtle forms of bias and stereotyping. This discrimination can manifest in various ways, such as exclusion from social groups, unequal access to resources and opportunities, and negative stereotypes and prejudices. For example, in some cultures, people of a certain ethnicity or nationality may be viewed as inferior or less capable simply based on their cultural background. The consequences of cultural discrimination are far-reaching and can have a profound impact on individuals and societies. It can also lead to social isolation, economic disadvantage, and limited opportunities for personal and professional growth. In societies where cultural discrimination is prevalent, there can be heightened tensions between different cultural groups, leading to conflict and division. One of the key reasons why cultural discrimination persists is due to ignorance and a lack of understanding. Many people hold onto stereotypes and prejudices about other cultures because they have had limited exposure to them. This ignorance can be perpetuated by the media, which often portrays certain cultures in a negative light, reinforcing harmful stereotypes. Additionally, cultural discrimination can be fueled by economic disparities, political tensions, and historical conflicts between different cultural groups. To combat cultural discrimination, it is crucial to increase awareness and understanding of different cultures. This can be achieved through education, cultural exchange programs, andinitiatives that promote diversity and inclusivity. Schools can teach students about the importance of respecting and embracing cultural differences, while workplaces can implement policies that foster a more inclusive and welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds. It is also important for individuals to challenge their own biases and prejudices and to confront discriminatory attitudes when they encounter them. By standing up against cultural discrimination and advocating for equality and social justice, individuals can help create a more tolerant and inclusive society. Additionally, policymakers and leaders have a responsibility to enact laws and policies that protect individuals from discrimination based on culture and promote equality and diversity. In conclusion, cultural discrimination is a pervasive issue that has lasting consequences for individuals and societies. In this essay, I will discuss the various forms of discrimination that can arise due to cultural differences and how we can work towards overcoming them. One of the most common forms of discrimination based on cultural differences is racial discrimination. Racial discrimination occurs when individuals are treated differently or unfairly because of their race or ethnicity. This can lead to negative stereotypes, prejudice, and unequal treatment towards certain groups of people. For example, in some cultures, individuals are discriminated against because of their skin color or ethnic background, which can have harmful effects on their mental and emotional well-being.Another form of discrimination based on cultural differences is religious discrimination. This can lead to intolerance, prejudice, andpersecution towards individuals who practice a different religion. For example, in some cultures, individuals are discriminated against because of their religious practices, which can lead to social exclusion and marginalization.Furthermore, gender discrimination based on cultural differences is also a prevalent issue in society. Gender discrimination occurs when individuals are treated differently or unfairly because of their gender. For example, in some cultures, women are discriminated against because of traditional gender roles and expectations, which can limit their opportunities for education, employment, and social mobility. In order to overcome discrimination based on cultural differences, it is important to promote understanding, respect, and acceptance of diversity. 【DEFINITION】Intercultural communicationThere are three kinds of things you need to learn if you want to be able to communicate effectively with Westerners. First, you need to learn a foreign language, usually English. Second, you should learn as much as possible about Western cultures. However, studying English language and Western culture is not enough. You should also learn something about what happens when people from different cultures try to communicate with each other — in other words, "intercultural communication."CultureCulture is a learned pattern of behavior, and is a way in which a person lives his life. It is an integral part of every society, and creates a feeling of belonging and togetherness among the people of that society. Culture encompasses various aspects of communication, attitude, etiquette, beliefs, values, customs, norms, food, art, jewelry, clothing styles, etc. Every society has a different culture, which gives it an identity and uniquenessPeople from different cultures live in different regions, have different jobs, have different ethnic backgrounds, and so forth.StereotypesIt is a derogatory word. It means that image, idea, character that has become fixed or standardized in a conventional form without individuality and is therefore false and shallow. Stereotypes may have a basis in fact, but they are too broad and shallow, a nd they give us the mistaken idea that a people’s culture can be summed up easily in a few short, simple statements. Stereotypes are also dangerous because they may trick us into believing that knowing a few stereotypes is the same thing as understanding another culture. InterpretationInterpretation is a very important aspect of intercultural communication. It is the process of deciding what foreigners’ words and actions mean and why they do what they do. Interpretation is a part of all communication---- even the most simple conversations.IndividualistIndividualist culture is one in which people tend to view themselves as individuals and emphasize the needs of individuals. In general, Western culture tends to be individualist. They view themselves as independent of collectives; are primarily motivated by their own preferences, needs, rights, and the contacts they have established with others; give priority to their personal goals over the goals of others; and emphasize rational analyses of the advantages and disadvantages to associating with others.CollectivistCollectivist culture is one in which people tend to view themselves as members of groups (families, work units, tribes, nations), and usually consider the needs of the group to be more important than the needs of individuals. Most Asian cultures, including China's, tend to be collectivist. People see themselves as parts of one or more collectives; are primarily motivated by the norms of, and duties imposed by, those collectives; are willing to give priority to the goals of these collectives over their own personal goals; and emphasize their connectedness to members of these cultures.HierarchyEvery society has hierarchy to some degree. In other words, some people have higher rank and more power than others, perhaps because they are older, stronger, wealthier, or have some kind of official position. On the other hand, however, most modern societies also believe that equality is a virtue, at least to some extent. So each culture needs to find its own balance between hierarchy and equality.1) Westerners generally have less respect for seniority — age, position and so forth — than would be the case in a collectivist culture.2) Western societies often try to limit the power of government officials.3) Westerners tend to have a somewhat suspicious and even negative view of power and authorityCulture shock/culture fatigueCulture shock is a feeling of being confused and overwhelmed by life in another culture. People who experience culture shock often feel fatigued, impatient and irritable. They may also begin trying to avoid interaction with foreigners, and even become increasingly critical and hostile toward them. Foreigners in China sometimes experience culture shock — and so do Chinese who go to live in other countries.Low contextLow context culture, in which context is not assumed to be understood, messages are explicit, direct, and completely encoded in words, and meaning is entrusted almost entirely to words. Low context communication is just the opposite of high-context communication. it’s the mass of information is rested in the explicit code, e.g. American German.High context communicationHigh context culture rely on the context, either the actual physical environment of communication or an internalized social context or both, or convey a large part or even all of a message’s meaning.High context communication is a kind of communication in which most of the information isalready in the person; while very little is in the coded, explicitly transmitted part of the message, e.g. Chinese, Japanese.Projected cultural similarityProjected cultural similarity is the tendency to assume that people from other cultures basically think and feel more the same way we do. In other words, we sometimes assume that while foreigners may look different, dress differently, and speak different languages, "inside we are all more or less the same". People from different culture assume they understand each other instead of asking each other what they think. Because they each expect the other person to react more or less the same way they would, they don't check to see whether or not the other person actually has the same feelings and reactions they would.“Loose” culturesLoose culture doesn’t demand a high degree of conformity. In loose cultures, people have a relatively wide range of views as to what is considered normal behavior. They also tend to be relatively tolerant of behavior that does not conform to cultural norms. And there is less pressure on individuals within the same culture to behave the same way most other people in the culture do. “Tight” culturesexpect a relatively high degree of conformity. There is a clear consensus as to what is and is not acceptable behavior and there is more pressure on people to conform to the norms of the culture. Here is an example of how people deal with people who are born left-handed. In tight cultures, children who favor their left hand are encouraged or even forced to use their right hand instead, and the percentage of left-handed people in the adult population is much smaller.Ethnocentrism"Ethnocentrism" is the tenden cy to think of one’s own culture as being at the center of the world in other words, to assume that one’s own culture's way of thinking and acting is more natural, normal, and correct than the way people from other cultures think and act.Ingroups & OutgroupsIn-Groups: “In-groups” are the people we have the most in common with and identify most closely with, such as our family, classmates, or co-workers. We also have larger in-groups such as people who are from our own region, religious group, ethnic group, or nation.Out-groups: out groups are those groups of people who we do not identify with---people from other families, regions, ethnic groups, or nations. Toward outsiders, we tend to be more critical, suspicious, and willing to pass harshjudgments.War storiesThe term “war stories” originally referred to the kinds of stories soldiers would tell after experiences in battle. Now “war stories” refers more generally to any stories people tell after strange or stressful experiences, including stories about unusual encounters with foreigners. War stories naturally tend to be biased against outsides, so they tend to reinforce negative views toward foreigners. What’s more, negative views based on an experience with one foreigner are often used as evidence to draw conclusions about foreigners in general.【ANSWER QUESTIONS IN DETAIL】What are the problems in intercultural communication? intercultural communication 定义1) Six stumbling blocks2) Assuming more cultural similarities leads to misunderstanding3) Language difference4) Misinterpreting verbal communication and body language from other country5) Stereotype and preconceptions6) Evaluate before really understanding7) Interact with foreigners stressfully and suffer from culture shock8) Tend to generalize or simplify9) Tend to define groups by a few key characteristic10) Assume everyone is similarWhy is it hard to teach a culture? How does Chinese culture differ from Western culture?Chinese culture:1.collectivism----------emphasis on the doctrine of the meanrge power distance—hierarchy/ intergroup (ingroup) harmony andavoidance of overt (covert) conflict in interpersonal relations3.hypocritical4.hypocrisy5.belief in the “naturalness, necessity, and inevitability of hierarchy.”6.inequality based on achievement, especially academic, moral, and financialachievement7.belief that “the judgment of wise people” is a better way to regulate lifethan rigid, artificial laws8.people exist “in and through relationship with others.”9.academic emphasis on memory, attention to detail, and lengthy homework Western culture:1.activity---a dominant mode of activity is doing2.equality3.motivation based on achievement4.the world is material /secular rather than spiritual5.optimistic6.individualist7.materialism8.success9.philanthropic---humanitarianism----------voluntary charity/anonymous Virtues? When we lend something we risk losing both the thing we lend and the friendship with that other person. To begin with, it is because westerners are in Individualist Cultures. Individualists feel less obligation to others, whether they are in-groups or out-groups. Secondly, because of their characteristics, their individualism, western people tend to be very independent and self-reliant. They will always solve their problems by themselves. So they don’t want others to rely on them, either. What are some ways in which Western societies differ in how they view the issue of equality?Hierarchy 定义“equality” can mean different things in different Western countries. For example, in US culture, “equality” almost always means “equality of opportunity”, not equal wealth. Americans tend to believe that, as much as possible, all people should be given an equal chance, but then people deserve whatever rewards they work for. Americans thus tend to be willing to accept large differences in wealth between the poor and rich as long as they believe these result from differences in effort and talent. In contrast, Western Europeans, especially Scandinavians, tend to feel that equality of opportunity alone will not guarantee social or material equality. They point out that some people naturally have advantages over others. What can you do to manage culture fatigue? /a prescription for culture shock?定义If you are ever a sojourner in another culture, the first thing is to be aware of the culture shock problem and realize that it is a normal part of adapting to life in a new culture. There may be periods when living in a new culture is hard and tiring, but for most people things get better over time as they become more familiar with the new culture and more comfortable in it. It also helps a great deal if you are able to make friends with some people from the new culture, because friends not only help you enjoy your life in culture B more, they also help you learn to understand and adapt to it more rapidly. Why does it cause intercultural communication problems?(1) PCS 定义(2) It is hard for people to imagine a perspective different from their own. It is effected by human nature; people are accustomed to self-centered. when they communicate with foreigners, they usually assume that foreigners are similar to us(3) As we grow up and learn what is right and wrong, truth and false normal and abnormal, and so forth, we naturally learn to view the world as our culture views it.The only to solve PCS is communication!Comment on the “Golden Rule” ---- Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.“Projected Cultural Similarity”定义The sentence means that it’s better not to d o things to others what you don’t want others do to you. Thi s behavior shows the phenomena “projected cultural similarity”. In our cultural system, if you don’t like thing done to you, you just don’t impose on others. It’s a kind of virtue. But from the aspect of PCS, people just assume people from other cultures view things the same way we do. What we think is right, we consider others will t hink it’s right, too. However, it just doesn’t work out like that. Because of different cultural background, we have different interpretations of everything happened. We cannot expect others o think or act the same as we do.Comment on conformity in Western cultures.“Loose” culture 定义“Tight” culture 定义One interesting aspect of culture is the degree to which its members expect everyone to conform, to all think and act in similar ways. Some scholars divide cultures into two broad categories, “loose” and “tight”.“Loose”cultures do not demand a high degree of conformity. In loose cultures, people have a relatively wide range of views as to what is considered normal behavior.“Tight” cultures, in contrast, expect a relatively high degree of conformity. There is a clear consensus as to what is and is not acceptable behavior, and there is more pressure on people to conform to the norms of the cultures. This may cause some difficulty for Chinese may expect Westerners to be more uniform in their beliefs, values, and ideas than is in fact the case.Chinese culture is tight culture, and western cultures are loose cultures. So conformity in western cultures is less than it in Chinese culture.Factors contributing to tightness/ looseness in a society?“Loose” culture 定义“Tight” culture 定义(加些自我发挥)1. The degree of change in the population---the more people move, the more loose and individualist a society tends to be2. The density of the population—small dense societies tend to be collectivist, hence tighter. Large dense society tend to be more complex, hence not quite so tight--melting pot3. The number of choices available in society---the more choices available, the more room there is for individualism4.The degree of conformity of one country ——the more conformity there is, the tighter and vice versa. The similarity & difference between “Projected Cultural Similarity” and “Ethnocentrism”?“Projected Cultural Similarity”定义“Ethnocentrism”定义The similarity:both of them cannot be avoided or overcame in intercultural communication. These two phenomena show that every country or nation consider their own culture as the center.Difference:PCS: People have the tendency to assume that other people from other cultural background basically think and feel more or less the same way as they do.E: People have the tendency to think their culture has the superiority to others‟ and assume that their own culture’s way of thinking and acting is more natural, normal and correct than the way people from ot her cultures‟ thinking and act.Why are in/ outgroups a problem in intercultural communication?In/ outgroups 定义(1)We generally have more positive feelings toward members of ourin-groups than we do toward outsiders.(2)We tend to have a stronger sense of obligation to insiders than tooutsiders.(3)We tend to judge in-groups and out-groups by different standards.(4)We bear grudge against people from other culture because ofmisunderstanding of the way they treat out-groups.So the ties of goodwill and trust between in-groups and out-groups are often relatively weak, and they break easily when there is conflict or misunderstanding. How do Chinese people treat in/ outgroups based on their cultural backgrounds?定义The way Westerners treat in-group and out-group is not distinctly different but the way Chinese treat in-group and out-group is very clearly different. Chinese generally have a high sense of loyalty and obligation to their in-groups, and will often go to great lengths to help people they consider members of their in-groups; however, they feel less obligation to outsiders.Chinese often view outsiders who come to china as guests, and give them much special treatment. In part, this is because Chinese view guests as a kind of in-group, and tend to treat in-group members very well.Characteristics of war stories. (P125.126)The term “war stories” originally referred to the kinds of stories soldiers would tell after experiences in battle. Now, “war stories” refers more generally to any stories. People tell after strange or stressful experiences, including stories about unusual encounters with foreigners.War stories about intercultural communication tend to share several characteristics:(1) One reason we tell such war stories is to get reassurance that our interpretation of the encounter makes sense.(2) In war stories, we generally portray ourselves as the hero or victim, and we often paint the foreigner as the "bad guy." Because we want to get sympathy from our listeners, we tend to emphasize how unreasonable the behavior of the foreigner was, and how reasonable our own behavior was(3) We generally tell war stories to people who are likely to sympathize with us, usually people from our own culture rather than outsiders(4) As we tell war stories, we often generalize from one specific experience to groups of foreigners as a whole。
