Part ⅢReading C o m p e r h e n s i o n
Section A
Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. According to some research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed.
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician, believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies.
In studies with seniors, research has shown that exercise helps older people as well. The exercise does not have to be very difficult. The main goal is just to increase the heart rate. And especially when learning new movements, such as yoga or tai-chi, it appears that new memory paths open up in the brain. This can improve people's short term memory.
1. What is the main idea of this passage?
A.How to take exercise.
B.How exercise helps the brain.
C.How to enjoy music.
D.How the brain can change.

4. Why is yoga recommended for seniors?
A.It helps them learn new movements.
B.It can be done in groups.
C.It slows down their heart rate.
D.It is good for joints.
A 最后⼀段提到学习瑜珈、太极等新动作对⽼年⼈的⼤脑发展帮助尤其⼤。

5. What type of patients does a pediatrician probably treat?
A.People with mental problems.
B.People with physical problems.

Addicted to the M a ll
What do you do for recreation? Do you swim, dance, play cards, garden, or read? Many people t od a y
prefer to spend their free time shopping. These people are called recreational shoppers. Recreational shoppers do not always buy something. They really enjoy the shopping experience. Of course, many people like going to indoor malls. However, for recreational shoppers, the mall is more than stores. For them, the mall
r e pr e s e n t s happiness and fulfillment. For these people, a visit to the mall is an adventure. In fact, for many recreational shoppers the art of looking for and buying something is more fun than owning it.
Recently, psychologists discovered through a study that recreational shoppers were usually younger, had less self-control, and were more often female. The recreational shoppers also went shopping when they felt worried, angry, or depressed. Ordinary shoppers didn't. Most of the recreational shoppers said buying something helped them feel better-it made them happy. Their negative feelings went away. Many recreational shoppers also did something unusual while they were shopping. They pretended that they were different people with different lives.
Of course, shopping is an important part of our contemporary consumer society. We spend a lot of time in malls. A recent study found that people spend most of their time at home, at work, and in school. Shopping malls ranked fourth. In the United States today, many people want a college education. However, almost haft of the people who go to college now do not attend a four-year college. Instead, they go to a community college.
The community college offers a two-year course of study in a wide range of subjects. It prepares some young people to go on to a four-year college. It trains others for jobs in business, government, or industry.
Some people choose a community college because of cost. The tuition for a semester at a c o mm un it y college can be less than half the cost of a semester at a four-year college. Also, since these colleges are located in large communities, their students can save money by living at home.
Community colleges are also useful for people who have jobs and who do not have time for a t r a d iti on al four-year college. Some of these people take night courses at community colleges. Others complete long-
distance courses, in which they stay at home and use video-tapes, audiotapes, and the Internet.
Community colleges also serve high school graduates who only achieved low grades. Many of these students would not be admitted to a four-year college. Section D
Alaska is disappearing slowly but surely. Since the 1950s, it is estimated that as much as 15 percent of Alaska's area has disappeared. But how can a whole state be disappearing?
One reason for Alaska's gradual disappearance is the melting of its glaciers. According to one geologist at the US Geological Survey, about 98% of Alaska's glaciers are either unmoving or diminishing. This diminishing seems mainly due to the increase in global temperatures. Since the 1960s, the average year-- round temperature has increased by 5°F. Additionally, the average winter temperature has increased by 8°F. Presently, an estimated 24 cubic miles of ice is disappearing from Alaskan glaciers every year. It may be even
more in the near future, as some scientists predict that the average world temperature could go up 2.5 to 10 °F by the year 2100. Another problem contributing to Alaska's gradual disappearance is its melting permafrost. Much of t h e la nd in Alaska was permanently frozen, or frozen for most of the year. This maintained its stability. Now, the melting permafrost is causing a number of problems on land. Roads and utility poles are collapsing. Also, the hard permafrost, which originally prevented beaches from eroding during violent storms is now melting. Affected villages are forced to move somewhere else. For villages on small low islands, one terrible storm could wipe out the entire community.
Some scientists believe that human activity is linked to the global increase in weather temperature. Whether the rising temperatures are caused by human activity or natural changes, the fact remains that Alaska is warming. Sadly, this could be a preview of what will happen to the rest of the world in the next century.

(1) Describe the picture and deduce the purpose of the person who draws the picture;

(3) Give suggestions as to how to solve the problem.
Write a composition of no fewer than 80 words on the Answer Sheet
In the picture, two sharks are congratulating themselves for the sea-level rise caused by global warming. It illustrates the drawer's deep concern over the rapid sea-level rise in recent years and the damage it may cause.
To begin with, sea-level rise would drown many little islands and low-lying coastal areas thus damage the living lands of the people and wild life there. Further more, it would bring more storm tides and rains which will be a great threaten to the lives and properties of the coastal areas. To solve the problem, we need to get down to its origin-global warming. Measures must be taken to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas and to protect the forest and marsh wetlands.
2. Write a composition of no fewer than 120 words, giving your opinion on the following topic: Smoking should be banned in public places.
Please write your composition on the Answer Sheet. (20 marks)
Many people are against the opinion that smoking should be banned in public places for it takes away the smokers'fights, however, in my mind, it protects more people's fights and we should strongly support it. Smoking in public places has many bad effects. On the one hand, it harms the health of the people around, for as we know, smoking can cause more damage to the passive smokers than to the smokers. On the other hand, it pollutes the environment by giving off poisonous gas into the air, which may make other people feel uncomfortable.
Banning smoking in public places is very important and necessary to protect our health and environment. The smokers do have their rights to smoke, but they should enjoy their rights on the basis of not harming that of the others.。
