21.(6分)Most of us struggle through the time it takes to get a cup of coffee to our lips once our alarms go off. Luckily, this coffee-brewing alarm clock could make those few struggling minutes practically disappear.
An alarm clock that brews a fresh pot of coffee as soon as you wake up actually exists, and you can buy it right now. Thanks to the Barisieur, your morning time will never be the same.
Here’s how it works: Before you go to bed, fill the glass container with water and pour ground coffee into the filter (过滤器). Not a black coffee drinker?
Not to worry --- special drawers keep your cream cold and store your sugar, too.
Then, just set your alarm and go to sleep. This machine will take care of the rest.
A few minutes before your alarm goes off next morning, the Barisieur will begin to brew your coffee. And voila! A hot cup of coffee is waiting for you when your alarm rings and you open your eyes. You won’t even have to leave your bed.
London designer Joshua Renouf designed this invention himself, raising over $500,000 through donations on IndieGoGo. Coffee lovers should act fast and put in a pre-order on the website now, paying just $300. Otherwise, you have to wait until it hits stores and pay $420.
Owning one of these clocks will be totally worth it. Nothing says “seize the day” quite like waking up to a pot of freshly brewed coffee, after all. Also, the machine isn’t limited to making coffee only in the morning. You can go out and return home with a hot cup of coffee waiting for you.
1、Why does the author mention the struggle?

C.To recommend a special kind of alarm clock.
D.To compare traditional alarm clocks and new ones.
22.(8分)Over the course of his long and amazing career, W. Somerset Maugham( 1874-1965) achieved great success as a novelist and a playwright. Not happy with just being a writer, Maugham was also a spy. But this was less of a success than his writing.
Dec 15, 2016 marked 51 years since his death, and Maugham’s works have never been out of print. Of Human Bondage(1915) was his masterpiece. The title comes from the great 17th century Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza. The ph ilosopher thought that human beings were slaves to what they wanted and needed. That’s exactly what Philip Carey, the hero of the novel, experiences.
Carey is a slave to his emotional needs. He doesn’t get much love when he is a child, so he looks for love later. After losing both his parents early in his life, Carey is raised by a paternal uncle who is emotionally cold. In his adult life, he goes from woman to woman and job to job, as he finds it a struggle to find either personal happiness or the right job for his talents. Not wanting to become a lawyer, he is eventually trained and qualified as a physician.
But true love is much harder to find. He finds that he attracts women he has no feelings for and falls in love with those who have no interest in him or, worse, try to take advantage of him. He is torn apart by the pain of his helpless love of a waitress and not being able to return the love of a young artist.
Although Maugham tried to hide it, the book is about his own life. Carey’s loveless childhood and romantic troubles were Maugham’s own. However, he managed to turn these painful details into a story that would interest readers who share his characters’ feeling.
Maugham does not just write about his life in the novel. He writes about deeply personal things in a way that speaks to everyone about their wants and needs.

A.Politics. B.Writing.
C.Sport. D.Philosophy.

4、What is the article mainly about?

23.(8分)Plants are flowering faster than scientists predicted (预测) in reaction to climate change, which could have long damaging effects on food chains and ecosystems.
Global warming is having a great effect on hundreds of plant and animal species around the world, changing some living patterns, scientists say.
Increased carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air from burning coal and oil can have an effect on how plants produce oxygen, while higher temperatures and changeable rainfall patterns can change their patterns of growth.
“Predicting species, reaction to climate change is a major challenge in ecology,” said the researchers of several U.S. universities. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services.
The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated (低估) the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing by 4 times.
“Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance—for both leafing and flowering—that results from temperature increase,” the study said.
The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said.
Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis (光合作用) to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet.
Scientists believe the world’s average temperature has risen by about 0.8℃ since 1900, and nearly 0.2℃ every ten years since 1979.
So far, efforts to cut emissions (排放) of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond 2℃ this century—a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which
weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels.
1、What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.Plants’ reaction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystems.
B.The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists’ expectation.
C.Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns.
D.Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather.
2、We can learn from the study published on the Nature website that .
A.plants’ flowering is 8.5 times faster than leafing
B.there are 1,634 plant species on the four continents
C.scientists should improve the design of the experiments
D.the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change
3、Scientists pay special attention to the study of plants because .
A.they can prove the climate change clearly
B.they are very important in the food chains
C.they play a leading role in reducing global warming
D.they are growing and flowering much faster than before
4、What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs about the world’s temperature?
A.It needs to be controlled within 2℃ in this century.
B.Its change will lead to weather extremes.
C.It is 0.8℃ higher in 1979 than that of 1900.
D.It has risen nearly 0.2℃ since 1979.
(8分)Y ou may think that the story of Pygmalion (《卖花女》, 1913)---in which people are judged by the way they 24.
talk --- is something that only existed in the days of British high society. But thanks to etiquette (礼仪) expert and author William Hanson, we realize that little has changed during the past 100 years.
In a BBC radio program, Hanson released a list of common words used in British English that could reveal whether a person is “common” or “fashionable”.
And yet here comes the interesting part: While some of us might go through life using fancy words, dressing in ways that make us appear more well-off than we really are, there are wealthy people in the world who try to hide their riches because they want to be seen as “normal” instead of “showy”.
Beatrice, for example, is a New Yorker who inherited (继承) millions of dollars. She told The New Y ork Times that she has a habit of removing the price tags from her clothes so her house staff don’t see them and feel uncomfortable.
“We don’t want that ‘Wow’.” said Scott, also a New Yorker, who had just inherited over $3 million. “We’re just not the type of people who wear it o n our sleeve.”
1、What does William Hanson find?
A.People failed to judge others’ manner.
B.People meet impolite persons frequently.
C.People tend to use more polite words.
D.People judge others by their way of talking.
2、What do rich people prefer to do?
A.To earn more money.
B.To hide their riches.
C.To think highly of their wealth.
D.To judge others by their wealth.
3、Why did Beatrice remove the price tags on her clothes?
A.To show off her fashion sense.
B.To avoid making people around her uncomfortable.
4、What does the underlined word “it” in the last sentence mean?
A.The Times magazine. B.The brand label.
C.The inheritance contract. D.The price tag.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear Liuwei,
In your last letter, you asked me for advice on your winter vacation plan. Here I have three suggestions for you: you can attend the winter camp held by a foreign high school, volunteer to work in a local history museum as a temporary docent, or preview the next semester's courses to make preparations for the next semester's study. If I were you, I would choose to attend the winter camp, because after a semester's intense study, we all need to relax, and the winter camp is one of the best ways to relax ourselves. In the winter camp, we can not only participate in the colorful activities held by it, but also make friends with foreign students. More importantly, we can experience foreign culture in person, which is very interesting and has great benefits for our oral English. In view of the above reasons, I suggest that you attend the winter camp. And you'd better know the customs of the country you want to visit in advance.
Wish you a happy winter vacation!
Yours sincerely,
Wanghua。
