If you are in charge of a project, the key to success is getting everyone to want to help you. As a director, I suggest. I gently push the actors in the direction I want them to go. In the 1986 movie, Nothing in Common, Jackie Gleason’s character, Max Basner, gets fired from his job as a clothing salesman. The scene(场景), shot(拍摄) on a boat, shows Max’s despair about being out of work. I was looking for some gesture that would allow Max to show his feelings.
Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell “The Great One” about acting? Out of fear I decided to direct by suggestion, and sat down with Gleason to talk about the scene. “So Max is sad, right?” I said.
Gleason nodded.
“And he’s probably still carrying his pens with names on them—the ones he used to hand out to his customers, right?”
Gleason nodded.
“So what would you want to do with the pens after you were fired?”
He was silent for a moment, “Why don’t I throw them overboard?”
I stood up and turned toward the crew. “Hey, everybody, Jackie has a wonderful idea. Let’s shoot it.”
After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and said with a smile, “Garry, what kind of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?”
You and your team can discover the answers to problems together. When there are no prizes or gold stars for whoever gets the solution first, you’ll all benefit when everything turns out right.
61. It can be inferred that ________.
A. Jackie Gleason is the director of the film Nothing in Common

A. thought his wonderful idea was accepted by the latter
B. succeeded in hitting upon a wonderful idea
C. was confident about his work the next day
D. appreciated the latter’s way of directing films
64. The most suitable title for the passage is ________.
A. Directing a Film
B. The Key to Success

Hank Viscardi was 26 years old when he put on his first pair of long trousers and his first pair of shoes. For the first time he saw himself as he had always wanted to be ––a full five feet eight inches tall.
Hank had been born without legs. Until he was seven, his world was a world of repeated
operations. At last, he had no legs, but stumps (残肢) that could be fitted with a kind of special boots.
Out of the hospital, Hank often found people slating at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him “Ape man” because his arms dragged on the ground. He went to school like other boys. His grades were good and he needed only eight years instead of the usual twelve.
After graduation, Hank worked his way through college. He swept floors, waited on table, or worked in one of the college offices. During all this busy life, Hank had been moving around on his stumps. But one day the doctor told him even the stumps were not going to last much longer. Hank would soon have to use a wheel chair.
Hank felt himself go cold all over. However, the doctor said there was a chance that he could be fitted with artificial legs.
Finally a leg maker was found and the day came when Hank stood up before the mirror and saw himself for the first time five feet eight inches tall.
But this was not the end yet. He had to learn to use his new legs. Again and again he marched the length of the room, and marched back again. There were times when he fell down on the floor, but he pulled himself up and went back to the endless marching. He went out on the street. He climbed the stairs and learned to dance. He built a boat and learned to sail it.
When World War II came, he talked the Red Cross into giving him a job. He took the regular training. He marched and drilled along with the other soldiers. Few knew that he was legless. This was the true story of Hank Viscardi, the man without legs.

Very soon a computer will be able to teach you English. It will also be able to translate any language for you too. It’s just one more incredible result of the development of microprocessors — those tiny parts of a computer commonly known as “silicon chips”(芯片).
So give up going to classes, stop buying more textbooks and relax. In a couple of years you won’t need the international language of English.
Already Texas Instruments in the United States is developing an electronic translation machine. Imagine a Spanish secretary, for example, who wants to type a letter from the boss to a businessman in Sweden. All he or she will have to do is this: first type the letter in Spanish. The letter will appear on a television screen. After a few seconds the translated letter will appear on another television screen in Stockholm in perfect Swedish. And that's not all. Soon a computer will be able to teach you English, if you really want to learn the language. You'll sit in front of a television screen and practice endless structures. The computer will tell you when you are correct and when you are wrong. It will even talk to you because the silicon chips can change electrical impulses into sounds. And clever programmers can predict the responses you, the learner, are likely to make.
So think of it. You will be able to teach yourself at your own pace. You will waste very little time, and you can work at home. And if after all that, you still can’t speak English you can always use the translating machine. In a few years, therefore, perhaps there will be no need for BBC Modern English, or BBC English by Radio programmers—no more textbooks or teachers of English. Fast, reliable and efficient language learning and translating facilities will be available to you. Think of that no more tears or embarrassing moments. One little problem is that a computer can’t laugh yet—but the scientists are working on it. Happy learning.
69. Silicon chips are________.
A. the computer itself
B. parts of microprocessors
C. microprocessors
D. the result of the development of microprocessors
70. According to the writer, “you won’t need the international language of English”
because________.
A. the computer will be able to translate any language for you
B. textbooks are no longer necessary
C. it’s better to buy a computer than to go to class
D. learning English will no longer be a difficult task
71. You will________ if you use a computer to learn the language.
A. waste much of your time
B. speak better English
C. do everything at your own pace
D. need no translating machine
72. This passage is mainly about ________.
A. what language learning could be like when computerized
B. the computer teaching the language
C. the results of the development of the computer
D. someone who learns English with the help of a computer
D
Do you always feel at war with the people around you? Anger and hostility(敌意) can harm your health. While you can’t change your personality, it’s completely possible to get rid of angry thinking and behavior.
Sometimes the only way to keep from blowing your top is to leave the situation that’s annoying you. If it’s not possible to physically get away from the situation, you can get a mental getaway. If you can’t escape to a beautiful, peaceful place every time you lose your
cool, you can step out of the situation and imagine such a place—including all the sights, sounds, smells, and even temperature, and then you can experience it. The plots you choose are up to you but here are a few suggestions to get you going:
1. Picture yourself on a mountaintop surrounded by thick green plants but open to the sky, so you’re bathed in sunlight. Note the deep blue color of the sky, feel the sun’s rays bringing comfort to your body, smell the sweet smell of the flowers all around, and hear the gentle sound of drops falling off leaves after a recent rain. Look far below and see the shore of a calm lake.
2. Take yourself to the shore of the lake and imagine walking along the soft sand. You’re completely alone, but you find a boat tied to a dock. After untying the rope, lie down on the soft blankets inside the boat and watch the clouds as you drift(漂流) on the clam water. You will feel a deep sense of relaxation as you drift between the water and the clouds.
73. What is the author’s advice on avoiding anger and hostility?
A. Leaving the annoying situation.
B. Climbing a mountain.
C. Going to the shore of a lake.
D. Changing one’s personality.
74. The underlined phrase “lose your cool” is similar in meaning to ________.
A. calm down
B. cheer up
C. blow your top
D. get away
75. In the passage, the author mainly tells us ________.
