Nashville, Tennessee is already known to many Americans as Music City, which is famous for country music in the United States and is home to many recording companies. But recently, music recorded for video games, television shows and movies has earned Nashville a new name: Soundtrack (原声音乐) City.
The city is known for very good studio musicians. They work mostly on recordings rather than live performances. Musicians in Nashville have helped to make the soundtracks for some of the most popular video games in the US. These include “Madden”, “FIFA”, “Call of Duty” and “Star Wars”.
Also, more production companies have been bringing their film and TV soundtrack recordings to Nashville, including Netflix, Sony and Focus Features. A program the state of Tennessee established last year gives financial support to companies for doing business in the city.
“Nashville has become one of the major places in the world to record for films, games and television,” Steve Schnur told the Associated Press. He is president of music for Electronic Arts (EA), a video game company. In the past, Schnur worked for MTV and music production companies such as Arista. He also worked as a music supervisor on films before joining EA. For a long time, EA recorded soundtracks for their games with orchestras, or large groups of musicians, in Los Angeles, London and Eastern Europe. That changed about seven years ago when Schnur came to Nashville to record music for a game called “Dragon Age Inquisition”.
“I work with the musicians in Nashville now. They are both fast and skilled,” Schnur added. This proved true even on complex songs written by wellknown composers such as Hans Zimmer, Lorne Balfe, Jeff Russo and John Debney. The music of video games is often very important to the game play in creating both emotion and attachment to the storyline. Kris Bowers is the remarkable composer behind the award-winning film “Green Book”. He came to Ocean Way Nashville Recording Studios and successfully recorded the soundtrack for “Madden NFL 20”.
8. What makes Nashville called Soundtrack City?
A. The achievement in soundtrack.
B. The increase in live music performance.
C. The film production.
D. The record of country music.
9. Which of the following is a film and television production company?
A. Ocean Way.
B. Call of Duty.
C. Netflix.
D. EA.
10. What does Schnur do now?
A. He is a musician from Los Angeles.
B. He is president of the Associated Press.
C. He is a music supervisor on films in Arista.
D. He is head of a video game company.
11. Why does the author mention Kris Bowers in the last paragraph?
A. To show the popularity of folk music.
B. To attach importance to video games.
C. To introduce his award-winning film.
D. To stress Nashville’s musical success.

The way we listen to music has changed. Our parents and grandparents listened to music recorded on old vinyl records (黑胶唱片) played on an expensive record player. In 1982, SONY invented CDs which were smaller and much easier to store than vinyl records. Nearly overnight, the life of vinyl came to an end. Soon after, we all got mobile phones and began to access music online. Today, we can easily listen to anything we want to.
Some of the greatest music we have ever heard was originally recorded on vinyl. For example, the Beatles recorded all their music on vinyl in the 1950s and 1960s. All those years ago, many people had large collections of records which filled their homes.
One such person was Bob George. He started his career as a DJ and record producer. He loved to collect vinyl records and owned 47,000 of them! Because vinyl records were quite large, he knew that they were often thrown away when people needed more space. He decided he would like to collect every piece of music written after 1945. It would be a collection of a very important part of our musical heritage (遗产).
Word of Bob’s ambition spread around the music industry. In 1985, A-Square Records called him asking for help. They had 150,000 vinyl records. The house where they were stored was sinking under their weigh! Bob was happy to take the records off their hands, and his archive (档案馆) began to grow. Bob called it the ARChive of Contemporary Music. He also included in his collection: old photos, books and other valuable things.
Many professional musicians have been able to help with the archive. It is also used when it comes to choosing music for new films. Tom Hanks spent hours researching music for his film “That Thing You Do!”.
Today, the archive is home to over 3,000,000 sound records and 90 million songs. It requires a huge amount of space and the hunt is now on for a bigger place. It’s a dream world for any music lover. We hope that space will be found and the collection can continue to grow.
12. Why does the author write the first paragraph?
A. To raise a topic for discussion.
B. To offer background information.
C. To describe the development of technology.
D. To encourage people to store vinyl records.
13. What can we know about Bob?
A. He is a famous artist.
B. He is a music enthusiast.
C. He was interested in collecting CDs.
D. He began his career as a collector in 1945.
14. What can be learned about the ARChive of Contemporary Music?
A. It is run by the government.
B. It mainly collects the Beatles’ records.
C. It is developing at a surprising speed.
D. It sells A-Square Records’ records.
15. What does the author think of the archive?
A. It is a great treasure.
B. It will make money.
C. It will have big changes.
D. It excites people’s interest in films.

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby (破旧的)and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just stare at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (定额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle (壁炉). “Do you collect dogs?” the little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have,” the old man answered. The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much,” the boy said sincerely. The old man was ready to shut the door in the boy’s face and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt.
