My Personal English Work Plan for 1st Grade
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm a 1st grader. I really want to work hard this year to improve my English skills. English is such an important language, and I know learning it well now will help me a lot in the future. Here is my personal work plan for English class this year!
Reading
I think reading is one of the best ways to get better at English. This year, I want to read as many English books and stories as I can. My goal is to read at least 20 short English books over the school year. Some books I'm really excited to read are:
• The Cat in t he Hat by Dr. Seuss
• Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss
• The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper
• If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff
I'm going to ask my parents to take me to the library every couple of weeks to check out new books. I also want to start building my own little library at home of my favorite English books so I can read them again and again. Repetition is key when learning to read in a new language.
In addition to reading whole books, I will practice reading out loud to myself and my parents every day using simple sentences or passages from my textbook or reading worksheets. This will help me work on pronunciation, expression, and reading fluency. My goal is to read out loud for at least 10 minutes every day.
Writing
Being able to write well in English is another major goal for me. By the end of the year, I want to be able to write simple sentences and short paragraphs correctly. I will practice writing skills like:
• Using capital letters at the s tart of sentences
• Finger spelling words I'm unsure of
• Punctuation like periods, question marks, etc.
• Simple verb tenses like present, past, future
• Sight words and spelling
Every week, I will write in my English journal about what I did that week, how I felt, or anything else I want to write about. I'll also do all my written homework assignments carefully and ask my teacher for feedback to improve. Whenever I have free time in class, I'll spend it working on writing stories or sentences using my spelling words or vocabulary words for the week.
Vocabulary
Learning new vocabulary words is SO important for improving my English. I will make it a personal goal to learn 5 new English vocabulary words each week. I'll keep them written in a special vocabulary notebook and review them constantly - in the morning before school, at night before bed, whenever I have a spare minute.
Some strategies I'll use to learn and remember the new words:
• Writing each word 5 times while s aying it out loud
• Using the new words in sentences
• Making flashcards with the words and definitions
• Asking my parents to quiz me on the words
• Playing vocabulary games or doing word searches
• Reading books with my new words and circling them
If I stick to learning 5 new words a week, that will be over 200 new words by the end of the school year! I'll feel so accomplished.
Listening and Speaking
Understanding spoken English and being able to speak it clearly is the last major area I want to work on. It's the most challenging part of learning a new language, but also the most important for communication.
For listening practice, I will watch kid-friendly shows, movies, videos, or listen to audiobooks in English as much as possible. I'll also play close attention and focus hard in class when my teacher is speaking English.
Some other ideas for listening practice:
• Having my parents read English books out loud to me
• Listening to English music, even if I don't understand all the lyrics
• Watching English videos on kid-approved sites while following along with captions
To practice my speaking, I'll use English as much as I can with my teacher, parents, and any other friends or family members who also speak it. I won't be afraid to just start speaking, even if I make mistakes at first. Mistakes are how we learn! I can also record myself reading out loud or telling simple stories and then listen back to hear how I can improve.
In class, I'll raise my hand and participate as much as possible by answering questions, repeating phrases, and engaging in conversations. I'll speak slowly and clearly and ask for help if I need it. The more I practice speaking out loud, the more natural and comfortable it will become.
I'm really looking forward to an amazing year of learning and growth in English class! I know it will take hard work, discipline, and lots of practice. But I'm determined to stick to this plan and take advantage of every opportunity to read, write, learn new vocabulary, and practice listening and speaking. By doing my best and putting in consistent effort, I'll be so proud of how far my English skills progress over the year. Wish me luck!

My First Grade English Work Plan
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm a first grader at Oakwood Elementary School. I just started learning English this year and I'm really excited about it! English is such a cool language and I want to get really good at it. That's why I've decided to make my very own personal work plan for English class. I'm going to work super hard to meet all my goals!
My first goal is to master the English alphabet and letter sounds. The alphabet has 26 letters and each one makes a different sound. Some letters have more than one sound too, like the letter C which can sound like "cuh" or "sss." I need to know all the letters and sounds really well because they are the building blocks for reading and writing words.
To practice, I'm going to do alphabet worksheets and activities every day at home. I'll trace the letters, listen to alphabet songs, and play games with letter flashcards. My parents are going to help me too by pointing out letters everywhere we go - like on street signs, billboards, labels, etc. Once I've got the alphabet down pat, I'll feel ready to start
blending sounds together to read simple words. Sounding out words is going to be so much fun!
My next goal is to build up my vocabulary by learning lots of new English words. Right now I only know basic words like colors, numbers, classroom objects, etc. But there are so many awesome words out there for me to discover! I'll start by making pictionary flashcards for the new words I learn in class each week. Flashcards with pictures really help the words stick in my brain. I'll review the flashcards every night before bed.
I also want to listen and read as much as I can in English to pick up new vocabulary naturally through exposure. I'll ask my parents to read me simple English storybooks and let me watch educational videos and shows in English. Repetition is key, so I'll probably want to read/watch my favorites over and over again! Whenever I come across words I don't know, I'll jot them down and look up the meanings later. Pretty soon my word bank is going to be HUGE!
In addition to vocabulary, I need to work on my English grammar. Grammar is how we put words together into proper sentences. In first grade, I'll be learning basic sentence structures like putting the subject before the verb ("I jump"). I'll also learn
how to use simple verb tenses, punctuation, capitalization, and more.
To nail the grammar concepts, I'm going to create fun practice activities. For example, I can cut out pictures from a magazine and use them to build silly sentences with the correct word order. Or I can write sentences on strips of paper, cut them apart, and have my parents help me re-assemble the words in the right grammatical order. Getting my hands involved with grammar practice is sure to make it stick better!
My last big goal for first grade English is to gain confidence speaking aloud. I tend to get a little shy when it comes to talking in front of others because I don't want to make mistakes. But I know the only way to improve my spoken English is to keep practicing!
At home, I'll do pretend role-plays where I order food at a restaurant, go shopping at a store, or introduce myself to others. My parents can be the other characters and we can switch roles. Rehearsing real-life conversations will make them feel a lot more natural. I also want to start a weekly video diary where I record myself just chatting in English about my day, my interests, or telling silly stories. Then I can watch the videos and see my spoken skills improving over time!
In the classroom, I'm going to raise my hand more often to volunteer answers, even if I'm not 100% sure I'm right. My teacher always says it's better to try than stay silent. I'll also participate actively during circle time by repeating chants, singing songs, and doing movements to reinforce the English phrases we're learning. The more I speak out loud and hear myself, the more comfortable I'll become. By the end of the year, I'll be an English-speaking superhero!
Well, there's my first grade English work plan. It's going to take a whole lot of effort, time, and dedication to meet all these goals. But I know if I stick to my plan and practice a little bit every single day, my English skills are going to skyrocket! I have big dreams of becoming fluent in English one day. Maybe I'll even grow up to be an English teacher myself so I can inspire other kids too. For now, I need to focus on first grade and give it my all. Let's do this!。
