The festival began with the sacrifice of two male goats and a dog. Next two young men were led to the altar, their foreheads were marked with the sacrificial blood and they were expected to smile and laugh.
Most of countries in our world have a day to celebrate love, friendship and kind relationships. Valentine’s Day is said to take its origin from 3rd Century Rome as a tribute to a Catholic bishop; however, we are going to find more about its origin and traditions.
While in prison, Valentine fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. Before his death, he sent a farewell message to her, signed "From your Valentine." This phrase is still used on Valentine cards today and Valentine’s love would be remember each February 14th.

The celebration was made to honor Juno (Goddess of Women and Marriage), these celebrations featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man would be his companion for a year. Quite often, the paired couple would fall in love and marry.
Claudius decided to ban marriages to have more soldiers to participate into battles.
Valentine was a priest who defied Claudius’ new law by secretly arranging marriages of young men and women. When Valentine's was discovered by the Emperor, he was brutally beaten up and put to death on February 14, about 270 AD.
Girls and young women would line up to receive lashes from these whips. This was supposed to ensure fertility, prevent sterility and ease the pains of childbirth., connecting this to the goddess Juno. Then, when Rome became Christian, this festivity was banned and connected the fertility rite to the romantic love and the Virgin Mary purification.
Valentine's Day was imported to North America in the 19th century by British settlers.
In the second half of the 20th century, the practice of giving gifts along with paper-laced cards became popular. Roses, candies and chocolates are the most commonly exchanged Valentine's Day Gifts.
Lupercalia was a very ancient, preRoman festival, observed on February 13 through 15, to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility.
In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day became popular in the 17th century. Lovers and friends exchanged small tokens of affection and handwritten notes. By the end of the 18th century, printed cards replaced handwritten notes.
In Chile we have acquired this celebration mostly because of TV programs and american cartoons.
