"The thief," said Germain softly, "He's a man who darers do many dangerous things. He is one of the mo st powerful and important ministers in the government. He is Minister Danton.”

Dupin explained, "I know Minister Danton very well. He could not hide the letter in any of the usual hiding places. I realized that he might have left the letter out in the open, right under everyone's nose, where no one would search for it."
"Then I visited him with my dark glasses on to help me observe(观察)better. While we were chatting, a dirty, torn letter in the letter holder suddenly caught my eyes-unusual for the Minister, who is careful and neat."
"I was sure it was the letter."
"Then I purposely left my gloves behind so I could come back again."
"The next morning, I hired a man to fire a gun on the street, while the Minister went to see what happened, I stole the letter by replacing it with a similar one, On it Dupin wrote these words:

警长因为一个棘手的案子请杜宾帮忙找回国王丢失的一封信,他知道信在部长那里,但是就是找不到。

杜宾先生去了部长家里,凭着敏锐的眼睛发现了那封信的所在,然后巧妙的将信调包,帮助了警长。

(1)词义猜测。

根据I met a case(案件)that has been giving me a great deal of trouble可知警长遇到了很麻烦的案子请杜宾先生帮忙。

In fact, we examined everything in the house but found nothing.和A month later, Dupin asked Germain and me to his house. There he took out a letter and handed it to the Chief.

根据 "Then I visited him with my dark glasses on to help me observe(观察)better.可知A项正确;根据Then I purposely left my gloves behind so I could come back again可知B项正确;根据The next morning, I hired a man to fire a gun on the street可知C正确;根据I stole the letter by replacing it with a similar one, On it Dupin wrote these words……可知D项虽然也是文章内容,但是并不是杜宾为了取得信而做的事情。

所以选D。

(4)推理判断。

根据I know Minister Danton very well. 和 I visited him with my dark glasses
on以及While we were chatting,可知杜宾与丹顿部长是熟人。

故选A。

C
Grace, usually known as the Home of Microsoft, is inside an office building in Redmond, Washington. Once you come into the building, you will feel that you're in a modern and future home.
When you enter the building, Grace's voice, coming from a hidden speaker, tells you your messages. In the kitchen, you set a bag of flour(面粉) on a flat stone table. Grace sees what you're doing and makes a menu of flour-based foods on the table. Once you choose one, Grace gives you ingredients(配料).
There's also a notice board in the kitchen made of “intelligent(智能的)cloth” that works like a touch screen computer. You can deal with postcards and invitations and surf the net with the touch of a finger. The invitations could be encoded(编码). You can deal with them on the computer. It's part of Microsoft's Smart Personal Objects Technology, whose aim is to make every object more efficient(有效率的).
“The day when your house becomes a member of your family is not far,” says Pam Heath, a manager of Microsoft. At the Andersen Windows Company, Jay Libby imagines that windows made of intelligent glass can be changed into TVs.
“Nobody wants a television set,” says Libby. “What you want is the service it provides.” If the TV isn't improved, it will disappear in the future.
Home entertainment is one consideration for the future. At the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, scientists are designing systems that will allow old people to live better on their own. So Grandma's home can be cleverly designed to recognize(识别)her ways of waking, sleeping and movement. Family members will be told any change by their computers.(1)We can know from the passage that Grace _________.
A. is an idea known as the Microsoft Home
B. is a machine that works like a TV
C. can understand what its master does
D. can cook meals for its master
(2)According to the passage, all the following are true EXCEPT________.
A. Grace can help you in the kitchen
B. you can use the computer with a touch screen
C. windows will take the place of TV sets in the near future
D. TV technology needs improving
(3)It can be inferred(推断) from the passage that ________.

C. few people will like watching TV in the future
D. all the old people will live without others’ help
(4)Which would be the best title for the text?

根据第一段的描述和第二段tells you your messages告诉你信息; makes a menu of flour-based foods on the table制定面食菜单; gives you ingredients给你配料等,可知Grace应该是一台家庭智能机器,它会看懂你做的事情,并提供必要的帮助,故选C。

根据第二段在厨房的活动可知A是对的;根据第二段that works like a touch screen computer和You can deal with them on the computer可知B是对的;根据第三段 windows made of intelligent glass can be changed into TVs用智能玻璃做成的Windows可以变成电视,并没有要取代电视的意思,故C是错误的;根据第四段If the TV isn’t improved, it will disappear in the future可知如果电视没有改进,它在将来会消失,故D也是对的。

Home entertainment is one consideration for the future和scientists are designing systems that will allow old people to live better on their own可知科学家们正努力使未来的建筑智能化。

故选A。

Friends are important to the children. Research shows that children who have no friends can suffer from difficulties later in life. Friendship provides children with more than just fun. By making friends, children learn how to get in touch with others and solve problems. Having friends even does good to children's study for they can help each other after class.
If parents care about their children whether they have made many friends, what matters is that the child is comfortable and happy with his friends. Parents need to understand the steps children take in building friendships.
First of all, be a friend of your child's. Good friendships start at home. Children begin to develop the necessary ability to go out and meet others through getting on with their parents. Greet the child warmly and let him know you are glad to see him. Children learn a lot from how their parents stay with them and other people.
Teach children how to solve conflicts. Being able to work out conflicts is an important skill in getting along with others. If parents know the children have a conflict, let them work it out on their own. Only step in if it is really necessary, for example, an argument is getting physical.
Give children chances to practise staying together. Make children play games that require teamwork and group problem-solving skills. For example, races are fun and provide plenty of practice in teamwork. "In what way didn't you work well together? What might you do differently next time?" For these ideas, read books such as Cooperative Sports and Games Book by Terry Orlick, and Team Building Activities for Every Group by Alanna Jones.
Encourage children to express thanks to others. Parents can encourage children to do this by setting examples for them.

"When I get my lights and camera set up, I remove the stand-in and put in the real thing," explains Ray Webber, who photographs food for magazine advertisements. "Sometimes I have to brush the food with its juices because it may have dried out a bit. And when I'm shooting(拍摄) something like tomatoes, I always carry an atomizer (喷雾器) of water to spray(喷洒) them with dew(水珠) just before I shoot."
Shooting food outdoors has special problems. "I'm always worrying about flies or worms (虫) coming up the glass," Webber explains. "I am also worried that someday a dog will come up from behind and run off with the food." Once Webber was shooting a piece of cheese outdoors and needed something to add to its colour. Finally he found a plant with lovely blue flowers. When the photo appeared, several people were horrified (惊骇的), because the plant was Deadly NightShade(颠茄,有毒).
