Passenger pigeons(旅鸽) once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks(群) so large that they darkened the sky for hours.
It was calculated that when its population reach its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons --a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant(丰富的) birds in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.
Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial(商业的) hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.
By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had b een damaged by Americans’ need for wood, which scattered(驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again.
In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting(禁止) the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden in September 1, 1914.
24. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons _______.

26. What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons?

B. To save other birds.
C. To make money.
D. To protect crops.
27. What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan?
A. It was ignored by the public.
B. It was declared too late.
C. It was unfair.
D. It was strict.

E-money, or electronic money, is money that you exchange electronically, as opposed to actual notes and coin. Generally, you conduct e-money or e-currency(货币) transactions (交易) over the Internet, or with smart cards that are linked to a bank account. More and more people are also using mobile phones to make such transactions.
E-money can be used anytime and anywhere. It is probably the best form of money to use for international transactions, as there are no hassles(麻烦) of currency exchange. It is more reliable, faster than paper checks and drafts(汇票), and has low costs of transactions. Today, with e-money becoming more popular, banks are competing to reduce transfer costs and provide account holders with good deals. If you send someone a check, it will take a few days to clear. But with an online money transaction, the money reaches the other person’s account almost instantly. These transactions can be made after the bank has closed, and even on holidays.
When you carry a large amount of money, there is always a chance of it being lost or stolen.E-money is safer than currency in this regard. Every transaction requires you to provide a personal identification number (PIN) for the payment to be completed. Electronic funds transfers can be more secure than cash or check transactions. All you have to do is take some simple precautions(预防措施) to make sure that your card or online account is not misused.
Each and every transaction made with electronic money is recorded in the bank’s and the user’s online records. These record s have all the essential information about
the transaction: the name of the payer, the name of the receiver, and the date, place and time it took place. This makes it more dependable, and users can access their record of transactions at any time of the day.
28.How many means of e-money transactions are mentioned in the passage?
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
29. What does a payer have to provide to complete an e-money transaction?
A. The receiver’s bank account.
B. The payer’s mobile phone number.
C. The name of the receiver.
D. The personal identification number.
30. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To explain how to use e-money.
B. To show how popular e-money is.
C. To introduce the advantages of e-money.
D. To persuade more people to use e-money.
31. How does the author introduce the features of e-money?
A. By using statistics.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples.
D. By listing categories.
D
Hollywood's theory that machines with evil(邪恶的) minds will drive armies of killer robots is just silly. The real problem relates to the possibility that artificial intelligence (AI) may become extremely good at achieving something other than what we really want. In 1960 a wellknown mathematician Norbert Wiener, who founded the field of cybernetics (控制论), put it this way: “If we use, to achieve our purposes, a mechanical agency with whose operation we cannot effectively interfere(干预), we had better be quite sure that the purpose put into the machine is the purpose which we really de sire.”
A machine with a specific purpose has another quality, one that we usually associate with living things: a wish to preserve its own existence. For the machine, this quality is not inborn, nor is it something introduced by humans; it is a logical consequence of the simple fact that the machine cannot achieve its original purpose
if it is dead. So if we send out a robot with the single instruction of fetching coffee, it will have a strong desire to secure success by disabling its own off switch or even killing anyone who might interfere with its task. If we are not careful, then, we could face a kind of global chess match against very determined, super intelligent machines whose objectives conflict with our own, with the real world as the chessboard(棋盘).
The possibility of entering into and losing such a match should concentrate the minds of computer scientists. Some researchers argue that we can seal the machines inside a kind of firewall, using them to answer difficult questions but never allowing them to affect the real world. Unfortunately, that plan seems unlikely to work: we have yet to invent a firewall that is secure against ordinary humans, let alone super intelligent machines.
Solving the safety problem well enough to move forward in AI seems to be possible but not easy. There are probably decades in which to plan for the arrival of super intelligent machines. But the problem should not be dismissed(搁置) out of hand, as it has been by some AI researchers. Some argue that humans and machines can coexist as long as they work in teams—yet that is not possible unless machines share the goals of humans. Others say we can just “switch them off” as if super intelligent machines are too stupid to think of that possibility. Still others think that super intelligent AI will never happen. On September 11, 1933, famous physicist Ernest Rutherford stated, with confidence, “Anyone who expects a source of power in the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.” However, on September 12, 1933, physicist L eo Szilard invented the neutroninduced (中子诱导) nuclear chain reaction.
32. Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that artificial intelligence may ________.
A. run out of human control
B. satisfy human's real desires
C. command armies of killer robots
D. work faster than a mathematician
33. Machines with specific purposes are associated with living things partly because
they might be able to ________.
A. prevent themselves from being destroyed
B. achieve their original goals independently
C. do anything successfully with given orders
D. beat humans in international chess matches
34. According to some researchers, we can use firewalls to ________.
A. help super intelligent machines work better
B. be secure against evil human beings
C. keep machines from being harmed
D. avoid robots' affecting the world
35. What does the author think of the safety problem of super intelligent machines?
A. It will disappear with the development of AI.
B. It will get worse with human interference.
C. It will be solved but with difficulty.
D. It will stay for a decade.

根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” 36 I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. 37 However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
38 Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using them to get your message across. But to talk to someone in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter. 39
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All the hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive(主动的) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. 40
A. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.
C. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.
D. However, their spoken English does not have to re main “poor”!
E. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.
F. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for
any mistakes he hears.
G. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities
wherever you go.
