There is a brown female Canadian duck that weighs only four hundred fifty grams. The duck had flown to the southern state of Florida for the winter. A hunter shot it on January fifteenth and took it to his home in the city of Tallahassee. He put it in the refrigerator. Two days later the man’s wife opened the refrigerator door. The duck lifted its head and looked at her. It was alive!
The family took the duck to a doctor who treats animals. The doctor gave the duck to the Goose Creek Animal Sanctuary. Animal sanctuaries provide homes for animals and teach people about their care.
The doctor said it was easy to understand why people thought the duck was dead. He said ducks generally do not move a lot, especially after being shot. And he said its low body temperature helped it survive in the refrigerator.
That was enough to make the duck famous around the world. The Tallahassee newspaper published the story that was re-printed in many different countries. But that was not the end of the story.
Workers at the wildlife sanctuary named the duck Perky. And they arranged for the doctor to perform an operation to repair the duck’s damaged wing. During the operation, Perky stopped breathing---not just once but two times. The doctor tried to save Perky by giving her oxygen through a face mask. But he finally said the duck had died. A few seconds later, however, Perky began to move. Reports say the people in the operating room were so happy that they cried.
Workers at the wildlife sanctuary say Perky will not have any more operations. It seems she had a bad reaction to the drugs that were used. Perky is expected to live at the sanctuary. And a local company has begun to sell T-shirts showing a picture of the lucky duck. Money from the sale of the shirts will help pay for Perky’s care.

58. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

D. the duck is likely to be well cared for in the sanctuary
59. What is the best title for the passage?

B. The Lucky Duck
C. Stop Killing Ducks
D. The Poor Duck

In the age of reality television, success isn’t the only way to the public eye. Failure can also create fame, just like William Hung, 21, a native of Hong Kong.
Hung recently has made an agreement with US-based entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse Music Network. They will publish a full-length record, titled “The True Idol (偶像)” on April 6.
The idol is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley. He did a version(改写本)of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” on the television show “American Idol 3” on January 27. The Fox TV singing contest searches for pop s tars among ordinary people. In the case of Hung, however, his act was so bad that the judges cut him off in mid-act.
Hung’s response was “I already did my best, so I have no regrets at all.” That’s good, because any common person would have plenty to regret: the off-key singing, the blue Hawaiian shirt worn with pants pulled up too high, the terrible dancing, the hips jerking(摇摆)to a beat that did not belong to the song, maybe not even to this planet. It was, by all accounts, bad.
But, it was this very bad act that sold well.
Marc Juris, president of Fuse, explained it this way: “Every one of us is happily guilty of singing our favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom, completely off-key and completely unworried. That’s what William did and immediately won the hearts of America.”
Whatever it is, for the moment it’s big. Three websites devoted to Hung have gone up on the Internet in the past few weeks. Versions of this performance have been remixed with hip-hop and techno music and have made it to the top 10 request list at a Chicago radio station.
So, what does Hung think of this? “There were all these peo ple saying things about me. A lot were saying I was very courageous and that I was great on the show, but some didn’t show much respect for me and some were kind of mean.”
Now, he says he’s not so sure whether to distance himself from the glamour(魅力)or to accept it. Returning to normal hasn’t been easy.
60. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Sometimes an idol behaves quite foolishly.
B. Returning to normal isn’t easy.
C. How an unsuccessful person became famous.
D. Success sometimes does not require hard work.
61. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A. William Hung.
B. Hung’s bad act.
C. Hung’s website.
D. The public’s opinion.
62. Which of the following shows the correct order of what happened to Hung?
a. The entertainment firms made an agreement with Hung.
b. The judges cut Hung off in mid-act in the singing contest.
c. Hung became popular among Americans.
d. Hung gave a terrible performance though he tried his best.
A. dbca
B. acdb
C. adbc
D. dbac
63. Why was Hung able to win the hearts of America?
A. His success was based on his own hard work.
B. He attracted people’s attention before the contest.
C. He was good-looking though he didn’t sing well.
D. He developed his own special manner of performance.
C
You may have noticed that you feel hungry a lot, even if you eat three meals a day at regular times. This is normal. When you’re a teen, your body demands more nutrients to grow. Snacks can be a good way to stop that hunger and get the vitamins your body needs.
But you need to pay attention to what you eat. Stuffing (填塞) your face with a large package of potato chips after class may give you a quick boost, but a snack that is high in fat and calories will only slow you down in the long run.
Try healthy snacks
Choosing healthy snacks means shopping smart. Be careful of the health claims on food packages. The following are some things to watch out for.
When something says “all natural” or “pure”, it doesn’t always mean it’s good for you. For Example, “all natural” juice drinks or sodas can be filled with sugar
(which is natural, but the food is high in calories and gives you little nutrition). Be careful of low-fat food claims, too. If the fat has been cut back, the amount of sugar in the food may have been increased to keep the food tasting good. Many low-fat foods have nearly as many calories as their full-fat versions.
Smart strategies
Here are some ways to make healthy snacking part of your everyday routine:
*Keep healthy snacks with you. Keep plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables at home, so you can take them with you when you go out. Make it a habit to put whole-grain biscuits, nuts or raisins(葡萄干) in your backpack so you always have some healthy food nearby. *Satisfy cravings with healthier foods. If you’re crazy about chocolate, try a hot chocolate drink instead of a chocolate bar. An ordinary cup of hot chocolate has only half the calories and fat of chocolate bar. Trade ice cream for yogurt. If you want something salty, eat whole grain biscuits instead of potato chips.
*Pay attention to the amount you eat. As with everything, moderation (适度) is the key to smart snacking. A handful of walnuts (核桃) make great brain food before sitting down to do that maths homework. But a whole bag won’t help you add anything-except weight!
A glass of milk or a soy drink with calcium(钙) will sustain you far longer than a soda. In fact, a recent study found that adding calcium to the diet may help teenage girls keep weight off.
How many teaspoons of sugar are there in a typical can of soda?
Ten. It’s more grams of sugar than in a chocolate candy bar!
64. What can be a good way to stop hunger and get the vitamins your body needs?
A. Potato chips.
B. Snacks.
C. Sugar.
D. A chocolate bar
65. What can we conclude from the passage?
A. People can trust “all natural” or “pure” food.
B. Low-fat foods are much healthier than full-fat foods.
C. Whole-grain biscuits, nut or raisings are healthy foods.
D. A whole bag of walnuts will help you become smart.
66. What can help people lose weight according to the passage?
A. A glass of milk.
B. Low-fat foods.
C. A soda.
D. the diet with calcium.
D
If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky.
If you say to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but …” what follows t hat “but” can make the apology ineffective: “I had a bad day” or “your noise
was giving me a headache ” leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology.
Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I’m sorry you’re upset”; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.
Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful and, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. Saying “I’m useless as a parent” does not commit a person to any specific improvement.
These pseudo-apologies (假道歉) are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not turn to these pseudo-apologies.
But even when presented with examples of genuine regret, children still need help to become aware of the complexities (复杂性) of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling(扫兴) other children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that raiding (攫取) the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing a pa rent’s clothes without permission is not.
67. If a mother adds ”but” to an apology, _______.
A. she doesn’t feel that she should have apologized.
B. she does not realize that the child has been hurt
C. the child may find the apology easier to accept
D. the child may feel that he owes her an apology
68. According to the author, saying “I’m sorry you’re upset” most probably means “_______”.
A. You have good reason to get upset
B. I’m aware you’re upset, but I’m not to blame
C. I apologize for hurting your feelings
D. I’m at fault for making you upset
69. We learn from the last paragraph that in teaching children to say sorry_______.
A. the complexities involved should be ignored
B. their ages should be taken into account
C. parents need to set them a good example
D. parents should be patient and tolerant
70. It can be inferred from the passage that apologizing properly is _______.
A. a social issue calling for immediate attention
B. not necessary among family members
C. a sign of social progress
D. not as simple as it seems

One of the roles of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is to choose the host city for the Olympic Games. The host city election takes place in a country which does not have a candidate city for the Olympics in question. Except for unusual circumstances, the election is held seven years before the Olympic Games take place. There have been two phases leading to the election of the host city since December 1999.
Phase 1: applicant cities
Any city that wishes to host the Olympic Games must be proposed to the IOC by its National Olympic Committee (NOC), with a letter from the city itself. During the first phase, which lasts around ten months, each applicant city must answer a questionnaire
to provide general information about itself. Then the applications will be examined carefully. A number of things will be considered, such as government support, public opinion, general infrastructure(基
础设施), safety, accommodations and transport. The IOC Executive Board(执行董事会)will determine which applicant cities will be accepted as candidate cities.
Only candidate cities can continue with the procedure.
Phase 2: candidate cities
Candidate cities must provide a candidature(候选资格)file according to the instructions given by the IOC. After all the files are examined and the IOC Evaluation Commission(评估委员会)produces its report, the IOC Executive Board draws up a list of final candidate cities. The general assembly of the IOC then takes a vote on the host city.

Dear Mr. Helper,
I am writing to tell you about the great pressure among us senior three students. We need your help badly because we can hardly bear the pressure.
Every day, I have to stay at school for nearly 12 hours to have lessons and spend about 3 to 4 hours doing our homework at home. There are almost no after-class activities for us. As a result, most of us lack sleep. Worse still, some of us are in poor health and become seriously near-sighted.
Then, what on earth has caused this situation? To tell you the truth, faced with the big employment pressure, if we don’t work hard, we will be cleaned out of the job market. On the other hand, most high schools are focusing too much attention on the enrollment quotas, which will cause the teachers to overload us with much homework. Apart from these, our parents are always expecting too much of us.
But actually, we teenagers are eager to… …(内容自拟)
We’d like to share our pressure and concern with you and we are looking forward to your advice.
Yours sincerely,
