Passage 3
On the dark night of May 5 in the year1110, the moon slowly disappeared. Though the stars and the sky could be clearly seen, the moon couldn't be seen until nearly daytime.People expressed their worries about it, but nobody knew what happened. For over 900years, scientists have been trying to find out what caused the strange event. However, hardly anybody was able to come up with any ideas.
Now scientists have finally found an answer—volcanoes(火山)! The forgotten eruptions(爆发) of Japan's Mount Asama happened around the beginning of September in 1108 and lasted nearly two months. A lot of ash(灰烬) was produced. It moved slowly towards the sky and finally covered the moon.
But how did scientists discover this? They had to look at the ice from Greenland and Antarctica. The huge ice is useful to scientific study. It can show what the climate(气候) was like a long period of time ago and what was in the air at that time. Scientists noticed that there was more volcanic ash in the ice around May5, 1110.
Tree rings were also helpful in getting the answer. The rings change thickness with the climate. Scientists were able to see the year1109 was a cold and rainy year and that people failed to get enough food. This supported the idea that a volcano had erupted.

It's nothing new for archaeologists(考古学家) to discover ancient cities. Falerii Novi stands out, however, because of one thing—they didn't have to dig in the ground to find it.
Recently, a group of researchers from the UK and Belgium created a map of Falerii Novi,an ancient Roman city. By using ground-penetrating radar( GPR)(探地雷达) technology, they were able to produce a complete 3D map of the city. They were also able to understand how Falerii Novi was organized.
Falerii Novi was built in 241 BC and lasted until around 700 AD. It lies about 30
miles north of Rome. It is known from historical records and has been studied using other technologies before. But this new technology has helped researchers find out more about Faleri i Novi.
Falerii Novi was one of the many cities in ancient Rome. The well-known ancient city of Pompeii was about 150 acres(英亩) in size.Falerii Novi was about half the size of Pompeii. It had a network of aqueducts(渡槽) that ran along the streets. Home to as many as 3,000people, the city had 60 large houses, a temple,a well-planned public bathhouse and a market.
“GPR technology really changes how we can study and understand Roman cities—the way of the future for archaeology,”said Martin Millett, a researcher from the University of Cambridge.

Writing
There was a loud knock at the door at midnight. The knock woke me up. Who could it be?
It couldn’t be my parents, because they were sleeping in the next room. Could it be a thief? He couldn’t knock at the door if he wanted to steal something. It might be my neighbor. Maybe he wanted some help, but I was not sure. Oh , it must be my brother. He always liked knocking at the door when coming back at midnight.
I turned on my light and opened the door. I saw nothing. Who could it be?。
