Not all heroes wear capes (披风), but sometimes they have scissors.
At a barbershop, Rafael Santana and Osvaldo Lugo were working through a typical afternoon when the ordinary suddenly turned urgent (紧急的).
Santana, a father of four, looked at a blur (模糊形状) of pink racing down the sidewalk. Instantly, he knew something was wrong. When he saw the little girl running alone and heading towards a busy crossroad, he shouted to Lugo, and both barbers (理发师) dropped their scissors and rushed out the door. Fortunately, they managed to stop her just before she reached the crosswalk. It was a close call, but courageous actions made all the difference.
After Santana and Lugo’s courageous act saved a child from running into traffic, the local police department didn’t waste time recognizing the bravery of these two barbers. Within hours, the East Hartford Police Department posted a heartfelt message on their official website page, publicly praising Santana and Lugo for their quick action and calling them heroes. The post stressed the quick-thinking actions of Santana and Lugo that prevented what could have been a heartbreaking incident. The police department made it clear that the actions of these two men had not only saved a child’s life but also proved the power of everyday heroes in the community.
Despite the recognition, Santana and Lugo remained modest. “We did this out of love, and we'd do it a million times again,” Santana said. “We protect and serve our community at all costs.”
Santana and Lugo might be known for their styling skills, but now they’re also known for their actions and heroism. The barbershop’s regulars now have a story to tell, and it’s not just about a great cut. It’s about two barbers who became heroes when it mattered most.

Researchers have identified two ancient star groupings that appear to be among the Milky Way’s earliest parts. The structures (结构) are named Shakti and Shiva. They were discovered using observations from the European Space Agency’s Gaia.
Scientists wrote in a study that the structures might be the remains of two galaxies (星系) that connected 12 billion years ago with the early pieces of the Milky Way. They said the discovery offers new information about how our galaxy formed.
Led by astronomer Khyati Malhan from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, the study, recently published in The Astrophysical Journal, probes the basic question of galaxy formation and shows more about galaxy formation. The Milky Way, a large spiral galaxy spanning about 100, 000 light-years, is probably identified by this study.
The European Space Agency launched Gaia in 2013. It is helping to create the largest and
most complete three-dimensional (三维的) map of the Milky Way. It is measuring the positions, distances, and movements of the stars. These information permitted researchers to find Shakti and Shiva.
This study builds upon a 2022 discovery using Gaia data, identifying the “poor old heart” of the Milky Way, made up of stars from its earliest periods near the center. These ancient stars, different chemically, are termed “metal-poor”, containing fewer heavy elements like iron, carbon, and oxygen compared to stars elsewhere in the galaxy. These elements came from the universe’s earliest stars, which spread them upon their death.
Malhan said researchers would like to track the formation and development of the Milky Way starting from the beginning of it until present day. But he said this was difficult because the earliest period of the galaxy took place 11 to 12 billion years ago. Scientists say the Big Bang event started the formation of the universe about 13.8 billion years ago.
8.What are the Shakti and Shiva structures most likely to be according to the text?
A.The largest stars of the Milky Way.
B.Black holes within the Milky Way.
C.The oldest star structures in the Milky Way
D.Ruins of two galaxies joining to the early Milky Way.
9.What does the underlined word “probes” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Explores.B.Avoids.C.Protests.D.Stops.
10.What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A.The definition of Gaia.B.The data from Gaia.
C.The launch of Gaia.D.The function of Gaia.
11.What does Malhan think of tracking the origin of the Milky Way?
A.Interesting.B.Challenging.C.Risky.D.Costly.
Bumblebee (大黄蜂) populations have declined (下降) by 90 percent in the past 20 years. The decline of the bumblebees is highly concerning as they are significant for ecosystems. They pollinate (授粉) flowers and crops. If their populations were to continue to decline, crops would not be able to produce fruits and vegetables. Despite being small, they are important to nature’s balance.
And now, a new study published in the Frontiers in Bee Science has found that the rising heat caused by global warming might be a reason for the decrease in numbers across the globe. “The decline in populations and ranges of several species of bumblebees may be explained by issues of overheating of the nests,” Peter Kevan of the University of Guelph in Canada and lead author of the study said in a statement.
Kevan and his colleagues decided to take a closer look at the facts relating to bumblebee populations across the world. Kevan and the colleagues looked at 180 years of literature on the species and found one common reason across all bumblebee species that they can survive in temperatures up to 36 degrees Celsius, but the perfect temperature for nests is between 28 to 32 degrees Celsius. They are unlikely to be able to adjust themselves to the extent that rising temperatures due to climate change require, the study reports. While individual bees may be able to deal with increased heat better than others, the study notes that if nests are too hot, the groups will not survive.
“The effect of high nest temperatures has not been studied very much, which is surprising,” Kevan said. Similar studies have been done on honeybees (蜜蜂), another threatened yet highly important species. This suggests further that heat stress is a major factor in bees’ overall decline.
Although the studies led by Kevan have limitations, the potential effects for bumblebee health and conversation are large and long-term.
12.What do we know about bumblebees from paragraph 1?
A.They have been extinct within decades in America.
B.Their populations have decreased a lot in the last two decades.
C.Americans are concerned about their living environment.
D.They tend to depend on flowers and crops to survive.
13.How did Kevan and his coworkers carry out the study?
A.They raised bumblebees to observe them.
B.They focused on studying individual bumblebees.
C.They conducted experiments on bumblebees.
D.They studied literature on bumblebees.

I tapped my stick, and the buffalo (水牛) moved forward. We walked along the village road, passing by houses and people working in the fields. Life was simple in our small village in Sindh, Pakistan. Little though I was, I dreamed of going to school.
I heard laughter and saw a group of students. I asked them to show me their books before they could go by. The pictures of people and places in the books were very interesting. I told them I wanted to go to school too and gave their books back. The students smiled at each other and left, while I stayed with my buffalo.
Months passed. Every day, I rose to do housework and herd (放牧) the buffalo. Until one day, I got my chance. Uncle came to visit. “Brother, you must send Rasool Bux to school. Herding buffalo is not his future,” Uncle convinced my parents that all children should go to school. The following week, I enrolled in primary school. Now, armed with my own books, I set out to learn everything. I read textbooks, asked questions, and even read newspapers for my father and his companions.
By the end of the year, I proved to be one of the best students in the school. I resolved to study at college or university in Karachi, a big city over 150 kilometers away. Everyone laughed and made jokes. However, I didn’t give up on my dream.
I have a skin condition that causes white spots on my skin. Some people judged me quietly, but I didn’t let the problems in life bring me down. Rather, they became stepping stones toward realizing my dreams. I turned to writing poetry and practice calligraphy as an outlet for my emotions and creativity. I got published and won competitions, gaining not just recognition but also the confidence to keep moving forward. However, before I began my college study, I was hit with another roadblock.
