Crime fighters could have a new tool at hand. Researchers have developed a cutting-edge technique to identify human hair. Their test is quicker than DNA analysis techniques currently used by law enforcement.
DNA testing is commonly used for identification because DNA is unique to each individual. However, environmental and chemical processes can degrade DNA, limiting its usefulness over time. Protein in hair, on the other hand, is more stable than DNA but can also have variations (变体) that may be unique to the individual.
揙ur analysis process can be used universally,? says Ms. Huang. 揙ne of our
samples even included dyed hair and the test was 100 per cent accurate. The test was able to distinguish East Asians,Caucasians and South Asians.”
Dr. Beauchemin says she has got in touch with law enforcement agencies about using the new technology. She is also planning to collect more hair samples and continue her research with a goal of finding where exactly in the world the hair sample is from, to look for more races and determine specific age.
揥e are in a very similar place with protein-based identification to where DNA testing was during the early days of its development.? said chemist Brad Hart. 揟his method will be a game-changer,and while we’ve made a lot of progress toward improving it, there are steps to go before this new technique is able to reach its full potential.”
56. What’s the advantage of the protein-based identification over DNA testing?
A. Security .
B. Popularity.
C. Stability.
D. Convenience.
57. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the text?
A. DNA testing develops as rapidly as protein-based identification.
B. DNA testing will soon reach its full potential .
C. Protein-based identification has replaced DNA testing.
D. Protein-based identification remains to be improved.

One evening last summer, when I asked my 14 year old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response shocked me."What’s a colander(漏勺)?" he asked.
I could only blame myself. In the family, nobody else’s hands went in the sauce except my own.But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it,I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.As parents, while we focus on our sons’ confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommates, boyfriends, husbands, or fathers.I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life,"What’s for dinner?" So I came up with a plan:
I would offer Ray a private home economics course.I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no.For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove,he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the pie crust and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.
I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother—he tried to beg not to have sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive—but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping."I appreciate what you do as a mom," he told me one day.Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more importantly, he realizes there’s nothing masculine (男子气概的) about being helpless.
Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That’s what I call a man.I’m glad that I prepared so great a present for my future daughter in-law.
58. In the author’s opinion, some parents pay little attention to _______.

A.preferred sewing to cooking.
B.always thought housework interesting.

A.Useful education for boys.

Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that threatens research into the history of humans in Britain, a group of leading archeologists (考古学家) says. In a letter addressed to the justice secretary, Ken Clarke,40 archaeologists write of their “deep and widespread concern” about the issue. It centers on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two years, regardless of their age. The decision means scientists have too little time to study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.
“Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or a further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice,” they write.
The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig sites, including the remains of 60 or so bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC. A temporary extension has been approved to give archaeologists more time, but eventually the bones will have to be returned to the ground.
The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Hapsburg in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools that were made by early humans 950,000 years ago. If human remains were found at Hapsburg, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was. Under the current practice of the law those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed.
Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, while the Burial Act 1857 applied to more recent remains. The Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.
Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said: “Archaeologists have been extremely patient because we were led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer.”
The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied, or on what records should be kept.
61.According to the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because
______.
A.it was introduced by the government without their knowledge
B. it is only a temporary measure on the human remains
C.it is unreasonable and thus destructive to scientific research
D. it is vague about where and how to rebury human remains
62.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Temporary extension of two years will guarantee scientists enough time.
B. Human remains will have to be reburied despite the extension of time.
C. Human remains of the oldest species were dug out at Hapsburg.
D. Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.
63.What can be inferred about the British law governing human remains?
A. The Ministry of Justice has not done enough about the law.
B. The Burial Act 1857 only applied to remains uncovered before 1857.
C. The Ministry of Justice did not intend it to protect human remains .
D. The law on human remains hasn’t changed in recent decades.
64.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. New discoveries should be reburied, the government demands.
B. Law could bury ancient secrets for ever, archeologists warn.
C. Law on human remains needs thorough discussion, authorities say.
D. Research time should be extended, scientists require.

One day one of my self-proclaimed(自称的)Month of Gratitude, my five-year-old son woke up “bored” at 5:15 a.m., I spied a speeding ticket in my wife's purse, and our water heater spluttered to its death as I was getting into the shower. Ordinarily, I would have started complaining and the day would have been off to an ugly start. But this day was different. How cute my child's dimples (酒窝)are. How fetching my wife's taste for adventure. Only 29 days to go.
Just a week earlier, as I struggled wit h the feeling that I’d been put on this earth to load and unload the dishwasher,I’d decided it was time to end my reflexive complaining. But it wasn’t simply the little things that were annoying me. All of a sudden, my friends were dealing with bad news --- cancer diagnoses, divorce, job loss. Shouldn’t I be celebrating my relative good fortune?
I’d heard about the feel-good benefits of a gratitude attitude. Hoping for tips,I called professor Emmons, who pioneered research on the benefits of positive thinking. Emmons quoted new studies that indicated that even pretending to be thankful raises levels of the chemicals associated with pleasure and contentment. He recommended keeping a log of everything I’m grateful for in a given week or month.
I followed his suggestions, but my first attempts at keeping a gratitude list were pretty weak: coffee, naps, caffeine in general. As my list grew, I found more uplift: freshly picked blueberries; the Beatles’ White Album; that I’m not bald.
By day three, I was on a tear, thanking every grocery bagger and parent on the playground like I’d just won an Oscar and hanging Post-it notes to remind myself of the next day’s thank-you targets: the mailman,my son’s math teacher. But soon, the full-on approach started to burn me out.
Researchers call it the Pledge of Allegiance(效忠誓言)effect. “If you overdo gratitude, it loses its meaning or, worse, becomes a chore,” professor Emmons told me when I mentioned my low spirits. Be selective, he advised, and focus on thanking the unsung heroes in your life.
Then professor Emmons suggested a “gratitude visit.” Think of a person who has made a major difference in your life and whom you’ve never properly thanked. Compose a detailed letter to him or her that expresses your appreciation in concrete terms, then read it aloud, face-to-face.
I immediately flashed on Miss Riggi, my eighth-grade English teacher. She was the first one to open my eyes to Hemingway, Faulkner, and other literary giants. To this day,I am guided by her advice (“Never be boring”). I booked plane tickets to my hometown, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Miss Riggi was shorter than I remember, though unmistakable with her still long,
black hair and bright, intelligent eyes. After a slightly awkward hug and small talk,we settled in. I took a deep breath and read.
“I want to thank you in person for the impact you’ve had on my life,” I began. “Nearly 30 years ago, you introduced my eighth-grade class to the wonders of the written word. Your passion for stories and characters and your enthusiasm for words made me realize there was a world out there that made sense to me.” And whether it was Miss Riggi’s enormous smile when I finished the letter, or the way she held it close as we said goodbye, my feeling of peace and joy remained long after I returned home.
Since then, I have written several more gratitude letters, and my wife and I both summon(召唤)our “training” when we feel saddened by life. The unpleasant matters are still there, but appreciation,I’ve learned, has an echo --- and it’s loud enough to drown out the grumbling of one man emptying the dishwasher.
65. At the beginning of the passage, the author didn't start complaining when he met with unpleasant experiences because _____.
A. it was one of his self-proclaimed day of Gratitude
B. he thought the day was different from before

B. Keeping an elaborate dairy.
C. Thinking positively in a given time.
D. Recording everything appreciated for a certain time.
67. According to the context,“gratitude visit” in Paragraph Seven refers to _____.

B. call on someone with an appreciated letter
C. see someone personally
D. see someone you owe gratitude to

69. The last paragraph shows that _____.
A. professor Emmons’ suggestions were effecti ve to the author
B. professor Emmons’ suggestions were unpractical to the author
C. the author and his wife learn how to show gratitude to others
D. professor Emmons’ suggestions were considered as unacceptable

D. How to become an appreciated man.
Advice on how to improve oneself is everywhere. It accounts for about 2.5% of all book sales in the United States.
However, research shows that much of the advice may be misleading or even wrong. Several myths (谬误) about performance continue to exist, despite research and practices that show they are half-truths at best. That might explain why the most likely purchasers of self-improvement books have bought another. The first myth-riddled book didn’t work, so they bought another, and maybe another soon after.
Our observation of performance seekers has helped explain a series of myths
that hold people back when trying to improve. Hopefully, by correcting these myths, explaining the reality and offering some sound advice instead, we can help move people toward more effective personal development.
Myth 1: Performing at the top means consistent peak performance.
Reality: Top performers experience variability in their performance.
Advice: Expect variability. There’s just no such thing as steady improvement paths. There will be ups and downs. If the path is generally up,all’s good. To the extent you know and appreciate that, and you’ll be more patient and less likely to be discouraged.
Myth 2: We get better by benchmarking (把……作为衡量标准) ourselves against others.
Reality: Research shows that we do, indeed, compare ourselves to others all the time, with negative consequences.
Advice: A better approach is to pursue real opportunities for improvement by reviewing mistakes and thinking carefully how experiences can lead to improvement. Focus on getting better than you were yesterday and living up to your own potential and ambitions, not somebody else’s. This will give you a keener sense of where you want to go, and, more importantly, why.
Myth 3: Successful people participate in “singular deliberate practice” of one winning strategy.
Reality: Although Major League baseball pitcher R.A. Dickey won the Cy Young award in 2012 in part because of his mastery of the knuckle ball, he won by relying not just on that special weapon but on a variety pitches, speeds, and spins,to throw off the opposing batter.
Advice: There is no one way for you, or anybody else, to improve. Singular grand strategies seldom work because they don’t accou nt for emergencies. Adaptability is actually as important as plan. Don’t hesitate to call an audible (改变打法)—as long as it’s a thoughtful one. That will also increase your sense of ownership in the path willfully chosen.
Myth 4: Improvement arises from unchanging focus on your most challenging goals.
Reality: Evidence suggests that setting goals and pursuing them may actually prevent improvement.
Advice: Create some separation between goal planning and doing. First, think about your end game, such as “I wan t to improve my golf swing,” or “I want to increase sales by 20%.” Once you’ve begun to carry it out, however, focus on what’s rewarding and fun about the activity itself, and put less emphasis on the outcome. For example, remind yourself how much you like to play golf or talking to customers, without thinking about that challenging target.
In the end, improvement comes from knowing our own unique challenges and abilities, not from following pop-culture patterns. This is not just advice for your own improve ment; it’s a way to lead others. After all, you have to be able to lead yourself before you lead another.

More negative news is being reported online, which will certainly have side effect on those who frequently surf the Internet, as a consequence, they should wisely choose what they read.
People always blame the government for the booming negative news online, and so do I. On the one hand, I think our government should make laws to forbid reporters to focus on such negative news, like famous people’s personal life, terrible accidents etc. On the other hand, positive news which can fill people with courage and kindness should be promoted. People should also learn to reject the negative news, which will help discourage the repo rters. What’s more, those famous and authoritative websites should make efforts to stop the negative news from being spread.
With all these efforts, I hope more room will be made for the positive news. Therefore, people will be affected by the positive energy through such kind of news.。
