Does your local town have a nickname? If so, what does it say about the area and the people who live there? Many cities are recognized across the world by their unofficial titles. New York is the Big Apple, London is the Big Smoke, and Los Angles is famously called La La Land.
Now, as part of English Language Day on Wednesday, Britain’s national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey, and the British linguistics charity (语言学慈善机构), the English Project, are launching an interactive project which aims to identify the nicknames people use in their daily lives for local places.
“The name that people create for a place forms an emotional connection,” explains Winchester Universi ty’s Professor Bill Lucas, a supporter of the English Project. “So
Basingstoke becomes Amazingstoke, Swindon is known as Swindump and Padstow, hometown of Chef Rick Stein, is nicknamed Padstein.”
Basingstoke is a town in central England. The local nickname, Amazingstoke, shows the affection that locals seem to have for the area. Swindon, on the other hand, is sometimes called Swindump, showing that some people think it’s a dump (垃圾场). Stanford Le Hope in Essex is called Stanford No Hope by locals. And Padstow in Cornwall is so closely connected with the local famous person Rick Stein that it’s become known as Padstein.
Since launching the online survey last week, the creators have already received 3,000 alternative titles for places and landmarks.
There is a practical side to the project. Glen Hart, Ordnance Survey’s head of research, says the information could be very helpful to the emergency services. For example, “By having the most complete set of nicknames we could help the emergency services quickly locate the right place, and maybe even save lives.” he says.
24. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Some stories about nicknames for places.
B. Organizations collect official place names.
C. A survey of the nickname for places.
D. People have a great affection for their cities.
25. Unlike the town Basingstoke, Swindon is a place that __________.
A. has a long history
B. attracts a lot of tourists
C. has few people living there
D. seems unpleasant to some people
26. According to the passage, people’s respond to the project is __________.
A. active
B. indifferent
C. opposed
D. strange
27. What does Glen Hart think of the project?
A. It proves that most nicknames are interesting.
B. It may help increase the number of nicknames.
C. It is very helpful to the emergency services.
D. It has helped prevent deaths from happening.

Babies born in summer are much more likely to suffer from mood swings when they grow
up while those born in winter are less likely to become irritable adults, scientists claim.
Researchers studied 400 people and matched their personality type to when in the year they were born. They claim that people born at certain times of the year have a far greater chance of developing certain types of temper, which can lead to mood disorders.
The scientists, from Budapest, said this was because the seasons had an influence on certain monoamine neurotransmitters (单胺类神经递质), which control mood; however, more research was needed to find out why.
They discovered that the number of people with a “cyclothymic” temper, characterized by rapid, frequent swings between sad and cheerful moods, was significantly higher in those born in summer. The number of those with a hyperthymic temper, a tendency to be excessively positive, was significantly higher among those born in spring and summer.
Lead researcher, assistant professor Xenia Gonda, said, “Biochemical studies have shown that the season in which you are born has an influence on certain monoamine neurotransmitters, which are detectable even in adult life.”
Gonda added, “We can’t yet say anything about the mechanisms involved. What we are now looking at is to see if there are genetic markers which are related to the season of birth and mood disorders.”
The study may well provide a clue as to why some of the nation’s best-known personalities are good-natured, while others are slightly grumpier. The Duchess of Cambridge was born in winter, on January 9, which according to the study, means she is less likely to be irritable while Roy Keane, the famously hot-headed former Manchester United footballer, was born in August, when the scientists say people are more likely to have mood swings.
Professor Eduard Vieta, from the ECNP, said, “Although both genetic and environmental factors are involved in one’s temper, now we know that the season of birth plays a role too. And the finding of ‘high mood’ tendency for those born in summer is q uite interesting.”
28. According to the findings, people with a hyperthymic temper ________.
A. are less likely to be irritable
B. tend to be extremely positive
C. have frequent mood swings
D. tend to suffer from depression
29. Which of the following does Gonda agree with?
A. The birth season is likely to have a long-lasting effect.
B. There’re genetic markers related to mood swings.
C. When you’re born has no connection with personality types.
D. Environmental factors ma y not be involved in one’s temper.
30. Why are Roy Keane and the Duchess of Cambridge mentioned in the text?
A. Because they suffer from mood swings.
B. Because they have a good temper.
C. Because they’re used as supporting facts.
D. Because th ey’re best-known personalities.
31. What is the key information the author wants to give in the last paragraph?
A. The season of birth also affects your mood in life.
B. Genes and the environment are connected with your temper.
C. Genes and the environment are the decisive factors in your mood.
D. The finding of “high mood” tendency is not easy to understand.
D
Astronomers have discovered a new PINK planet on the edge of our solar system.
The small planet --- given the name 2012 VP 113 by scientists --- is 80 times further from the Sun than the Earth. The newly discovered planet is 280 miles in diameter (直径) and is in a distant area of the solar system beyond Pluto (冥王星) once thought to contain no planets at all.
The object is only the second to be found in a mysterious area at the boundary between the solar system and outer space called the inner Oort Cloud (内奥尔特星云).
Astronomers now believe there may be thousands of previously unknown objects orbiting the Sun at this distance. And they believe th at the pattern of the new planet’s orbit suggests it is caused by the gravitational pull (引力) of a Super Earth that traces such a large orbit around the Sun that it has never been seen.
Astronomer Scott Sheppard, who found the new planet with his colleague, Chad Trujillo, said, “If you took a Super Earth and put it a few hundred astronomical units out, the gravity could shepherd (引导) this new object into the orbit it has.”
The traditional view of the solar system had been that of nine planets orbiting the Sun. This was challenged in the 1990s when scientists found that Pluto is orbiting in thousands of icy objects called the Kuiper Belt.
Beyond this belt only one object, called Sedna, was thought to exist on its own. But the latest discovery suggests that our solar system has a number of planets at its edges.
32. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Astronomers now believe there must be thousands of previously unknown objects.
B. The object named 2012 VP 113 is only the first to be found in a mysterious area.
C. The latest discovery suggests our solar system has lots of planets at its edges.
D. The small planet is 80 times further from the Earth than the Sun.
33. What can we know from the passage?
A. Scott Sheppard found the new planet on his own.
B. In the 1990s, scientists found Pluto is orbiting in thousands of icy objects called
Sedna.
C. The inner Oort Cloud was once thought to contain no planets at all.
D. Astronomers believe the gravitational pull of a Super Earth causes the pattern of
the new planet’s orbit.
34. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Astronomers name an object 2012 VP 113.
B. Astronomers have discovered a new PINK planet on the edge of our solar system.
C. Astronomers prove the traditional view is wrong.
D. The latest discovery makes a big breakthrough in astronomy.
35. The passage is possibly taken from ___________.
A. a science fiction
B. a news report
C. a poster
D. a magazine

Firstly, the language ability is essential, which helps you have barrier-free communication with others and makes it easier for you to understand the courses. Secondly, you should have the ability to adapt quickly to the new environment. Besides, your interest is valued as well, for it has a lot to do with success.
