In elementary school, Guadalupe Quintanilla was often considered as a "slow learner" by her teachers. But she really wasn't slow at all. She just didn't understand the language used in the classroom. Her problem was that she didn't speak English. So she left school after the fourth grade.
When Guadalupe grew up, married, and had children of her own, she knew that her children were clever. But some of their teachers didn't think so. The children were having trouble in school because they didn't speak English. Mrs Quintanilla was angry. She didn't want people to think that her children were slow learners. So she decided to learn English herself as a way of helping them. She practised English. She looked up words in the dictionary. She asked the school headmaster to let her sit in on (旁听)classes. It wasn't easy, but she passed all her exams. She said that many of the other students helped her.

We all long for friendship, but how to make a friend? "The best time to make a friend is before you need one," Joy Steven said. The following are some tips for you.
Friends are from strangers.
Friends usually begin with strangers. Getting in touch with other people is the first step to make a friend. Friends can't be made in empty air. Best friends take time to make.
Friends understand friends.
Friends understand each other when talking. Many unpleasant personal quarrels can be avoided if you will take time to understand others' feelings and points of view.
Friends touch friends.
Touching is a warm form of communication between friends. When you see best friends communicating, you will notice they stand close together, touch each other comfortably and listen to each other carefully. Sometimes a friendly touch is more powerful than words.
Friends praise friends.
Praise is a powerful tool to make a friend. Honest praise can affect (影响) your friends' lives. So try to praise your friends, including your general ones.
Friends can be loyal (忠诚的) and trustworthy.
Trust and loyalty go hand in hand for friends. Friends can share secrets with you, because good friends never break confidence (信心) and are loyal forever.
()59. From Joy Steven's words, we can conclude (推断

One silly question I simply can't understand is "How do you feel?" When you ask a man who is on the go, walking along the street or busy working at his desk this question, what do you expect him to say? He'll probably say, "Fine, I'm all right." But you've put a bug in his ear —maybe now he's not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk that he overlooked (忽略) that morning. He starts to worry a little. The first thing, you know, he may look in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else "How do you feel?"
Every question has its time and place. It's perfectly acceptable, for example, to ask "How do you feel?" if you're visiting a close friend in hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to take a train, or sitting at his desk working, it's not a good time to ask him that silly question.
When George Bernard Shaw, the famous play writer, was in his eighties, someone asked him, "How do you feel?" Shaw put him in his place. "When you reach my age," he said, "either you feel all right or you're dead."
()63. The question "How do you feel?" seems to be correct and suitable when asked of ______.
A. a man working at his desk
B. a person having lost a close friend
C. a stranger who looks worried
D. a friend who is ill
()64. The writer seems to feel that a busy man should ______.
A. be praised for his efforts
B. never be asked any question
C. not be bothered (打扰)
D. be discouraged (使灰心丧气) from working so hard
()65. What does the writer mean by saying "put a bug in his ear" in the first paragraph?
A. You've made his ear hurt.
B. You've got an incorrect answer.
C. You've got a true answer.
D. You've made him uncomfortable.
()66. George Bernard's reply in the passage shows his ______.
A. carefulness
B. cleverness
C. kindness
D. politeness
D ★★★
Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be swimming, skiing, or playing football. It may be mountaineering as well.
Those who like to climb high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with surprise. Why are people willing to suffer cold and difficulties to take risks on high mountains? This surprise is caused probably by the differences between mountaineering and other forms of activities to which people give their relaxation.
Mountaineering is a sport, not a game. There are no strict rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from these rules that makes mountaineering attractive (有吸引力的) to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a "team game". We should be mistaken about this. There are, it is true, no "matches" between "teams" of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
Mountain climbers know that they may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than men. They have to fight the forces of nature. This sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skills year after year. It is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. He may take more time than younger men, but he probably climbs with more skill and less waste of effort, and he certainly experiences equal enjoyment.
()67. The main difference between a sport and a game lies in ______.
A. names
B. uniforms
C. rules
D. skills
()68. Mountaineering can be called a team sport because ______.
A. mountaineers depend on each other while
climbing
B. teams compete against each other
C. it is an Olympic event
D. there are five climbers on each team
()69. Mountaineers compete against ______.
A. each other
B. nature
C. other teams
D. mental and physical qualities
()70. Which of the following might be the best title?
A. How to Climb High Mountains
B. Mountain Climbers
C. Challenging (挑战性的) Sports Activities
D. Mountaineering

"A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 300 objects," say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child.
72
In an experiment, the researchers took 300 items that Rico is supposed to know. They divided the items into 30 groups. 73 In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't get clues (提示) from
anyone, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.

That was when we lived in Harrow, West London. I learned a lot from my visits. By the way, Dorset is one of the England's three most beautiful towns, the other two being Wiltshire and Somerset. You must know that I am often invited to give talks to biology students in colleges there.
M: Yes, certainly. That's why I came here. Mmm, now what was your first garden like?
W: It was a very tiny piece of land, which came with my house in Harrow, West London. I don't grow many plants from seeds, but I have several friends, and we often give each other plants. My garden is a place which often reminds me of so many people through the plants.

When eight-year-old Rosalind Hearse found a message in a bottle washed up on a beach, it didn't contain a cry for help. Instead, it was an invitation for friendship — that has lasted for 42 years. Rosalind wrote back to Sandra Morris, also eight, who had thrown the bottle over the side of a ship as she traveled home to the USA from a holiday in Europe. And recently, the pair of life-long friends met up at the place where Rosalind found the note in 1970. The two girls met for the first time in 1976 when Rosalind flew to the USA to meet Sandra. The pair's children have also become good friends after sharing a Disneyland holiday together.

Exercise can improve your physical condition and refresh your mind. Only when you have a
