In the fall of 1985.I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere.Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.
My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college an the age of 65.She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer.I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her.It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted(收养的`) and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son.To lay eyes on him was fantastic---and very emotional.A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3.In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo.Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time.But I never gave up on the dream either.I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant talking as few as one class each semester(学期).
The hardest part was feeling guilty(有罪的, 内疚的) about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am not special, just single-minded.It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal.Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on o ne day. It’s a process.Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.

Do you have a sore(痛的) throat, a running nose and a headache? Do you keep coughing and sneezing? If you do, the chances are that you have a cold or perhaps flu--- but which one? Although both colds and flu are caused by viruses(病毒), they are very different illnesses.
Colds, which usually last about a week, affect the nose most. They commonly cause a runny nose and sneezing. Sometimes, they cause a headache, a cough and slightly aching muscles.
Flu is much more serious illness and is caused by different group of viruses. People with flu usually get all the symptoms(症状) described above. However, they also get a high fever, a dry cough and much worse aching. Fever is one of the typical(典型的) symptoms of the flu for all ages. The symptoms also last much longer. Sometimes they don’t disappear for at least two weeks.
Flu can be a deadly disease. The elderly, who are weaker and less healthy than most younger people, can die from flu. This is one reason why old people are advised to have a flu injection(预防针) before the start of winter when flu is most common. This injection is inexpensive and definitely worth it.
If you have a cold or flu, you must always deal with used tissues carefully. Don’t leave dirty tissues on your desk or on the floor. Someone else has to pick these up and viruses could be passed on. And finally, remember to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze! You don’t want to see
the small drop of liquids blown out of your nose and mouth when you sneeze, do you? Disgusting(讨厌的), eh? Now you can undersdand why it’s a good idea to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze!

67. Which is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Cold or Flu?
B. The Different Symptoms of a Cold an Flu?
C. Prevention Is Better Than Cure
D. Cover Your Nose and Mouth When Sneezing

How Women Were Freed From Their Homes
As late as 1800, a woman's only place was in her home. Women in business were unheard of. No respectable woman would dream of entering what was strictly a “man’s world”. Even if she would, what could she do? Men were sure that no woman could do a job well outside her home. This was a widely accepted idea. When the famous Bronte sisters began writing books in 1846, they had to resort to using men’s names as aliases. (化名)
Teaching was the first profession opened to women, soon after 1800. But even that was not easy for women to take because most high schools and colleges were open only to men. Oberlin College in Ohio was the first college in America to take in women.
Nursing was regarded as a respectable profession for women only after Florence Nightingale won high credit for her nursing career and became famous. Miss Nightingale opened the first training school for nursing in 1860 in England.
The invention of typewriters in 1867 helped to bring women out of their homes to join the business world. Because women are careful and have nimble fingers, businessmen found that they were well suited to this kind of work.
By 1890, tens of thousands of women were working in schools, hospitals, shops, offices, and factories both in England and the States. Some even managed to become doctors or lawyers. The idea of women working in business and other circles was accepted.
68. Oberlin College was the first college in America _______.
A. where teaching was a profession only open to women
B. where girls could get advanced education
C. to train women to be teachers and nurses
D. to accept women only as professors and students
69. It can be inferred from the text that besides nursing, Florence Nightingale was also ______.
A. a doctor
B. a lawyer
C. a teacher
D. a businessman
70. Quite a lot of women entered the business world _______
A. soon after 1800
B. when Nightingale became famous
C. at the beginning of this century
D. after the typewriter came into being

M: Good morning, Madam. W: Good morning, I wonder if you c an help. I’ve lost my coat.
M: Oh, where did you lose it, Madam?
W: Ah, I left it on a bus yesterday morning.
M: Can you describe it?
W:Well, it’s a long white overcoat. It’s got a belt and one of those get thick ferry collars and keeps your ears warm. It’s a very nice coat actually.
M:I am afraid we haven’t got anything like that, Madam. Sorry.
(Text 7)
M:This butter has a funny taste. Perhaps it isn’t fresh. When did you buy it?
M: It has been here for only one day.
W: Sometimes supermarkets keep f ood on the shelf too long. Give it to me and I’ll take it back. I’ll ask them to change it for a new package. M: Do you think they will?
W:Why not? Food is expensive these days. We can’t afford to waste it. If we eat it, we might get ill.
M: Of course you are right.
W:I’ll make sure I get a fresh package this time. Is there anything else you want me to buy while I’m there?
M: No, thanks. Just butter.
(Text 8)
M: My boss told me never to go to work again.
W:I can’t believe it. Why?
M:I don’t know. Whe n he told me that, I was so confused.
W: Did you usually go to work late?
M: Well, I often did.
W: When you did your work, did you think about other things?
M: Sometimes.
W: Could you use a computer?
M: No. I can only use a typewriter.
W: Well, I think I know why. You didn’t use your time well, and you didn’t learn new things.
(Text 9)
M:Hi, Mary. We haven’t seen each other since we graduated. Where have you been?
W: I have been to Australia. Do you still live there?
M: Oh, no. We have just moved into the new house.
W: Really? Congratulations
M: Thank you, and we want to buy anew television.
W: What kind of television do you want to buy?
M:A colour TV, of course, but I’m not sure about the size. Maybe we should buy a bigger one. If we buy a smaller one, we might have to change it in a few years’ time for a bigger one. That would be a waste of money. What is your opinion?
W:In my opinion, I don’t think it’s necessary to buy a very big one.
M: Any reason?
W:Yes. As I know, your sitting room isn’t b ig enough. If you put in a very big television, that will be bad for your eyes, and a smaller size TV can also pick up good programs.
M:Mmm, that’s quite true. I’ll think about it. W:You’d better make a quick decision because the price may go up soon.
(Text 10)
W:I can’t decide whether to go to university or get a job. What do you think?
M: Well, if I were you, I would go on studying.
W:But I don’t even know what to study.
M: I advise you to major in economies.
W:That’s what my parents want me to d o.
M:You should take their advice. They know what’s best for you. The more you learn, the better
job you’ll get.
W: But my friends will have jobs and have a lot of fun while I spend all my time doing reading
and writing.
M: But if you go to university, you still have time for fun.
W:What you say makes sense. I’ll think it over. Thank you for the advice.
