阅读理解
“You probably don’t remember me,” she began, “I have come to apply for my Graduation with Distinction(优秀).” She then pulled out a piece of paper from her wallet and gave it to me. It was my handwriting, but I didn’ t remember writing it. As the Assistant Director of the Honors Programs at the university, it was my job to check students’transcripts(成绩单)to make sure they met the requirements for continuing in the honors program. It was common for freshmen to have a difficult start and many would leave the program after their first semester(学期). The note she handed me read, “I think you had an excellent second semester. You may have been disappointed by your grades, but you should feel wonderful that you have improved. That is an impressive achievement! Keep up the good work. Remember that with your 3.5 average, you qualify for Graduation with Distinction.”I didn’t remember writing the note, which was written at the bottom of her second semester transcript. She went on, “You can’ t know what this has meant to me. I have carried it for three years and I pulled it out whenever I didn’t want to continue with my work. For three years I have been planning on walking into your office and giving you this note and this transcript.”She handed me her latest transcript. I really had no idea my actions could have such a big effect on someone else. Writing the note seemed like nothing to me, but it had meant so much to her. I have enjoyed this for many
years and I am grateful for such an act of kindness. The kindness is not mine in writing the note, but hers in wanting me to know that what I have done really matters.

A.She wanted to get his praise.
B.She wanted to express her gratitude.

A.An Unexpected Thank You
B.A Student of Mine
C.A Student’s Achievement
D.How to Encourage a Student
正确答案:A
解析:主旨题。

A young boy was sitting in the back seat of the car eating an apple. He asked his father, “Why does my apple turn brown?” His father answered, “When the skin is removed, air reaches the flesh of the apple and causes oxidation(氧化).” This changes the apple’s molecular(分子的)structure and results in a brownish color.” The boy asked, “Daddy, what are you talking about?”I know how that boy feels. Sometimes I want answers to some of those confusing problems that we all run up against, such as how to get through difficult times or what to do in a tough situation, I just want to get it right. The problem is that I don’t always have the answers I need. Nobody else seems to have them, either. So I blunder ahead and think that I’ll never get it “right”. Often I didn’t know what to do. I often made poor choices, but I gradually improved. Then I realize that I don’ t have to always get it right. I don’t have to always know what to do all the time. All I really need to do is try my best, learn from my mistakes and go on. Dr. Leo Buscaglia once said, “No one gets out of this world alive, so the time to live, learn, care, share, celebrate and love is now. That would be pretty hard to do when you’re waiting for all the answers first.”So you got it wrong. You made a mistake. What should you do next? Forgive yourself and try again. You may not get out of this world alive, but you can get plenty of life out of this world if you’ re not too worried about always getting it right.

Laughter is a pleasant topic to discuss. We laugh without knowing why we do it. The greatest advantage of laughter is that it binds(联合)people together. One piece of research shows that only 10-20 percent of our laughter is actually caused by jokes. Many times, laughter is caused by a person, not by a joke. Even if it is a joke, many people cannot give any particular reasons why it awakens their laughter. The gender(性别)differences in laughter are very large, too. Females laugh more than males. Throughout history and in all cultures, it is the men that are more likely to cause laughter. Try to remember who is the funniest person in your class or workplace. Perhaps it is a man. Maybe that is why there are more male comedians. Women seek men who make them laugh, and the men are eager to fulfill this request. Some say that laughter is the best medicine. This develops from the fact that laughter unites people and improves our mental and physical health. Also, pain reduction is another thing that laughter can guarantee. People who laugh during some procedures are able to tolerate more discomfort than those that don’t laugh. The same is true with patients —the ones that watch funny videos need less medicine than those that don’t. Another advantage of laughter is that it makes us less stressed. This explains why people laugh when they are nervous. Furthermore, laughter helps us to think more creatively. It encourages us to think about things in unusual ways. An interesting thing is that people laugh more if their boss tells a joke rather than an ordinary workmate. Usually people laugh about 18 times a day, but of course, it varies from person to person. Laughter is related to mood and personality. People who laugh more deal with stress more easily in their daily lives and they live longer and more healthily.

There are many differences in the ways women and men deal with stress.
There are a number of factors that play into this. Traditionally, women, more than men, take on the role of primary family caregivers. This means that all of a family’s health concerns fall on the shoulders of the women, along with the stress that brings.
A woman will tend to put everyone at ease before herself and eventually sacrifice her own health and well-being. She doesn’t care if she is suffering from a cold at work. Once her child is sick, she will drop everything else to take care of him. If you ask men and women to describe their reactions to stress, their answers will be completely different. Men usually characterize their stress reactions as feelings of rage or sleeplessness. Women usually say that their reaction to stress is wanting to cry.
A majority of women also say that they are prone(易于发生的)to overeating when under stress. Most studies on stress have only been on men and how men respond. These studies are where we get the familiar “fight or flight”notions(观念). For decades this was how scientists assumed all humans behaved. Only recently have scientists begun performing stress tests on groups of women and the results are not at all what our male counterparts would have indicated. In most cases, women did not react to stress by wanting to “fight or flight”. Instead, their instincts(直觉)were to nurture. This new model for how females deal with stress has been described as the “tend and befriend”paradigm by its discoverer, Dr. Shelley Taylor. A woman’s instincts are naturally to Drotect or tend to their children and themselves. Then women seek out other women that could help them through. Pursuing comfort through a connection is the befriend aspect. Women are thought to have the same rush of hormones(荷尔蒙)as men when under stress, but the types of hormones differ.
51.From the passage, we can learn that______.
A.generally speaking, women think of other people less than of themselves

For years, prices have risen in China for many reasons. However, inflation(通货膨胀)has not badly affected people’s lives because living standards have improved. Inflation is not an unbeatable beast. In fact, economists from all over the world have found ways to stop or reduce it. There are now several methods

Therefore, the most important thing for any government to do is to control the amount of money being issued. Cutting down on government spending Over-spending and over-expanding of governments can make inflation worse. Slowing down the increase of salaries It seems that giving bigger salaries to workers helps them manage when prices of their shopping are going up. In fact, as salaries increase, the central bank will have to issue more money to pay for the increase. Thus, increasing salaries may not be so good as it sounds. It’s like cheating. Salaries should only be increased if workers produce more. Increasing bank interest rates The increase of interest rates can make more people put more money into banks. At the same time, enterprises take out fewer loans. As a result, demand for money on the whole is lower. 2.参考词汇:throwaway chopsticks一次性筷子;ecological value生态价值Dear Editor,We are astonished to learn from a CCTV ad that each year,__________________
正确答案:Dear Editor, We are astonished to learn from a CCTV ad that each year about 45 billion pairs of throwaway chopsticks are produced in our country and 6 million big trees have to be cut down. What shocking facts! Trees play an important part in keeping a good environment. The ecological value of a tree is 9 times as much as that of the chopsticks made from the tree. The producers of chopsticks may make some money, but they have destroyed a lot of forest resources at the same time. Moreover, when people throw away or burn the used chopsticks, the environment is badly polluted. Our government should take measures to limit or stop the production of throwaway chopsticks in order to protect the forest resources and our environment. Yours sincerely, Li Hua。
