Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, tim e and effort be spent exploring and researching something wit h so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent o n space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? Thes e are questions that, understandably, are very often asked. Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成) as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and en vironments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring spa ce is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible. Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its e ffects.Exploration also allows minerals and other potential(潜在的) resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate nee d of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or qu ality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spinoff s including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellite s for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Ev en nonstick pans and mirrored sunglasses are byproducts(副产品) of technological developments in the space industry! While many resources are spent on what seems a small retur n, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intellige nt members of our species to focus on what may serve to sav e us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human b eings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other pla nets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human li fe and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in t he future.本文是一篇议论文,向我们阐述了人类进行太空探索的原因。
高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 61

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 61Passage 1A South Korean man and the 21 ducklings he has been raising as his children ever since they hatched have been breaking the internet with their amazing bond. A video that recently went viral in the western world shows the cute birds following their “mother” on a mountain hike and listening to his every command. The middle-aged man, whose name is not revealed in the video, has been taking care of his 21 ducklings ever since they were eggs, making sure the incubation( 孵化) period went smoothly, and even helping the tiny birds break through their shell when it came time to hatch. He was the first thing they laid eyes on in this world, and he has remained the most important figure in their lives since.Ducklings naturally follow their mother around, and since the man was the one who acted as their mother, these birds follow him everywhere, even up a mountain. To them it’s only natural, but the middle-aged man considers it training and conditioning for the time when he finally releases them into the wild. He would love to raise them all as pets, but knows that wouldn’t be ideal for him or the birds, so he’s making sure that they are strong enough to survive in the wild. The video shows the ducks following the middle-aged man as he hikes up a mountain outside Seoul, stopping whenever he does and refusing to follow anyone else, even if they give the same “let’s go” command their human mother does. Unless they hear his voice and see him moving, they don’t budge. It’s actually quite remarkable. I mean, it’s one thing to see dogs acting like this, but ducklings? That’s something else. While it’s not clear what the man does for a living, I’m pretty sure he has a lot of experience with ducks, as at one point he reveals a certificate for “father of ducklings” dated 2005.1. What can we learn from the video?A. The ducklings just broke through their shells.B. The man accidentally saved some ducklings.C. The ducklings just obeyed the man naturally.D. The man took pride in his ducklings.2. What’s the man’s purpose of raising the ducklings?A. To make a living by performing.B. To film a video to attract attention.C. To free them into the wild one day.D. To make a contribution to a bird reserve.3. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “budge” in Paragraph 4?A. Attack.B. Move.C. End.D. Struggle.4. What can be the best title for the text?A. “Father” and “mother” of cute petsB. Man raises ducklings as his “children”C. Ducklings also regarded as good petsD. Amazing bond between man and animalsPassage 2When a big exam is coming up, you probably feel anxious about any wasted time and want to begin school as soon as you probably can.But tens of thousands of British high school students will soon be getting up later. They’re taking part in a new experiment by Oxford University to see if later classes can improve their exam results.Grades 10 students in the UK have to take the nationwide General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams. They have to pass these exams in order to study more advanced courses, and later apply for universities. The Oxford University project means that GCSE students from more than 100 schools across England will start school at 10 am, more than one hour later than the current start time (8:50 am).The project is based on scientific evidence that teenagers are “out of sync(同步)” with traditional school hours, the Telegraph reported. And what they need is more sleep in the morning.“We know that something funny happens when you’re a teenager, in that you seem to be out of sync with the world,” said professor Colin Epsie, who is leading the study. “Your parents think it’s because you are lazy and opinionated(固执己见的)and everything will be OK if you could get to sleep earlier. But science is telling us that teenagers need to sleep more in the mornings.”Everyone follows a natural cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Biology has decided that teenagers go to sleep around midnight and don’t feel fully awake until 9-10 am,according to scientists. That’s two hours later than adults. And their body clocks stay like this until the age of around 21 for males, and 19 for females.“Society provides school for learning, but the brain provides sleep. So we are exploring the possibility that if you delay the schools start time until 10 am, that will improve learning performance,” said Epsie. The results could be positive, based on previous studies. An early study at the UK’s Monkseaton High School in 2009 found that starting an hour later improved grades in core subjects by 19 percent. The Oxford project is expecting to publish the results in 2012. It’s time to wait and see whether scientists will give us an excuse to get up late.1. They say they are too busy to have time to read. Sure. They have work to do. They have families to support. But these are only excuses. The fact is that they haven’t got a reading habit. A reading habit isn’t something natural. It needs to be trained. And it’s never too late to develop a reading habit.Scientists believe proper books are very important for children to develop a good reading habit. A book in rich colors and with simple patterns(图案)such as lines and circles is a good choice for babies of three months old. When they reach six months, they will become interested in simple story books in rich colors. When children get old enough to read by themselves, it’s nec essary to buy books that are both interesting and right for them to understand. Books which are either too easy or too difficult are not good for kids to keep their reading habits.Only buying books for children isn’t enough. For kids, parents are their first teachers. So parents should read books to set an example. Children will follow them. Scientists say imitating the adults is a born skill. And it is the most valuable way for children to learn. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plan. So airlines(航空公司)offer passengers food. But it is common that they feel bad about food taste. Do you agree? To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers. However, according to scientific research, part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high altitude(海拔)we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure(气压) reduces one third of the sensibility(感觉)of our taste buds(味蕾). So our taste buds become senseless. The sad face, however, is that our noses don’t know it.All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy(辛辣的)food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless. Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A,B,C and D. You should decide on the best answer or the best choice to complete the statement and write the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET.(40 points, 2 points each) Passage 1 There are two basic differences between the large and the small enterprises. In the small enterprise you operate primarily through personal contacts. In the large enterprise you have established "policies,""channels" of organization, and fairly rigid procedures. In the small enterprise you have, moreover, immediate effectiveness in a very small area. You can see the effect of your work and of your decisions right away, once you are a little above the ground floor. In the large enterprise even the man at the top is only part of a big machine. To be sure, his actions affect a much greater area than the actions and decisions of the man in the small organization, but his effectiveness is remote, indirect, and difficult to see at first sight. In a small and even in a middle-sized business you are normally exposed to all kinds of experiences, and expected to do a great many things without too much help or guidance. In the large organization you are normally taught one thing thoroughly. In the small one the danger is of becoming a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. In the large one it is of becoming the man who knows more and more about less and less. There is one other important thing to consider: do you get a deep sense of satisfaction from being a member of a well-known organization——General Motors, the Bell Telephone System, the government? Or is it more important to you to be a well-known and important figure within your own small pond? There is a basic difference between the satisfaction that comes from being a member of a large, powerful, and generally known organization, and the one that comes from being a member of a family; between impersonal grandeur and personal - often much too personal - intimacy; between life in a small office on the top floor of a skyscraper and life in a crossroads gas station. 21.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that in a large enterprise ____. A. new technology is employed quickly B. all people work efficiently C. one's effectiveness is felt very slowly D. one can get promotion easily 22.Generally speaking, the person working in a large enterprise ____. A. has to deal with a great many things B. knows how everything is going on around him C. acquires increasingly thorough knowledge within a limited field D. feels more secure than the one employed by a small enterprise 23.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions "your own small pond" to refer to ____. A. a top leader in a larger enterprise B. a manager of a small enterprise C. a large enterprise D. a small enterprise 24.According to the information provided in the passage, if you are interested in personal intimacy, you should work____. A. for General Motors B. for the Bell Telephone System C. in a department in the government D. in a crossroads gas station 25.The writer of this passage ____. A. compares the large and the small enterprises objectively B. obviously prefers to work for a large enterprise C. intends to show the advantages of working in a small business D. explains the disadvantages of being a top leader in a large business Passage 2 In the old days, when a glimpse of stockings was looked upon as something far too shocking to distract the serious work of an office, secretaries were men. Then came the First World War and the male secretaries were replaced by women. A man's secretary became his personal servant, charged with remembering his wife's birthday and buying her presents; taking his suits to dry-cleaners; telling lies on the telephone to keep people he did not wish to speak to at bay; and of course, typing and filing and taking shorthand. Now all this may be changing again .The microchip (集成块) and high technology is sweeping the British office, takingwith it much better of the routine clerical work that secretaries did. "Once office technology takes over generally, the status of the job will rise again because it will involve only the high-powered work-and then men will want to do it again." That was said by one of the executives(male) of one of the biggest secretarial agencies in this country. What he has predicted is already under way in the U.S. Once high technology has made the job of secretary less routine, will there be a male takeover? Men should beware of thinking that they can walk right into better jobs. There are a lot of women secretaries who will do the job as well as they-not just because they can buy negligees(妇⼥长睡⾐) for the boss's wife, but because they are as efficient and well-trained to cope with word processors and computers as men. 26.Before 1914 female secretaries were rare because they ______. A. were less efficient than men B. were not as serious as men C. liked stockings D. would have disturbed other office workers 27.Besides fulfilling other duties, a female secretary was expected to _____. A. be her boss's memory B. clean her boss's clothes C. do what her boss asked her to D. telephone her boss's wife 28.Secrtaries,until recently, had to do a lot of work now done by _____.A. machinesB. other staffC. servantsD. wives 29.A secretary in the future will ______.A. be better paidB. have higher statusC. have less work to doD. have more work to do 30.The writer believes that before long _____. A. both men and women will be qualified secretaries B. men will be better than machines C. men will take over women's jobs as secretaries D. women will operate most office machines Passage 3 Clutter is the disease of American writing. We are a society strangling in unnecessary words, circular constructions, pompous frills and meaningless jargon. Who really knows what the average businessman is trying to say in the average business letter? What member of an insurance or medical plan can decipher the brochure that tells him what his costs and benefits are? What father or mother can put together a child's toy-on Christmas Eve or any other eve-from the instructions on the box? Our national tendency is to inflate and thereby sound important. The airline pilot who wakes us to announce that he is presently anticipating experiencing considerable weather wouldn't dream of saying that there's a storm ahead and it may get bumpy. The sentence is too simple-there must be something wrong with it. But the secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest components. Every word that serves no function, every long word that could be a short word, every adverb winch carries the same meaning that is already in the verb, every passive construction that leaves the reader unsure of who is doing what-these are the thousand and one adulterants (赘词)that weaken the strength of a sentence. 英语阅读:It’s Never Too Late

英语阅读:It’s Never Too Late Several years ago, while attending a communications course, I experienced a most unusual process. The instructor asked us to list anything in our past that we felt ashamed of, guilty about, regretted, or incomplete about. The next week he invited participants to read their lists aloud. This seemed like a very private process, but there's always some brave soul in the crowd who will volunteer. As people read their lists, mine grew longer. After three weeks, I had 101 items on my list. The instructor then suggested that we find ways to make amends, apologize to people, or take some action to right any wrongdoing. I was seriously wondering how this could ever improve my communications, having visions of alienating just about everyone from my life. The next week, the man next to me raised his hand and volunteered this story: While making my list, I remembered an incident from high school. I grew up in a small town in Iowa. There was a sheriff in town that none of us kids liked. One night, my two buddies and I decided to play a trick on Sheriff Brown. After drinking a few beers, we found a can of red paint, climbed the tall water tank in the middle of town, and wrote, on the tank, in bright red letters: Sheriff Brown is an s.o.b. The next day, the town arose to see our glorious sign. Within two hours, Sheriff Brown had my two pals and me in his office. My friends confessed and I lied, denying the truth. No one ever found out. Nearly 20 years later, Sheriff Brown's name appears on my list.I didn't even know if he was still alive. Last weekend, I dialed。

河北省2024年中考英语阅读理解专练阅读理解之一How can we protect ourselves at School?School is not only a place we can learn something, but also is a small society.Sometimes there is something unpleasant happening at school. For example, we can see a group of students holding sticks. They are beating and kicking other students. We can see an elder and stronger student is asking for money from others. Some students often give others nicknames(绰号). This is called school bullying(欺凌).School bullying is a big problem that has got more and more attention in society.School bullies happen in almost every school. In my school, we sometimes have bullies and some students are hurt, so it is really bad for us to bully others or be bullied at school. We are supposed to stop any school bully when we are in the trouble of it. we should stay calm before a bullying behavior happens. We should always be friendly and helpful when making friends with others. Here are some of my ideas about stopping school bullies. Firstly, we will learn how to have a self-protection because our personal safety is the most important. Secondly, we should be peaceful with others at all times and can't have any violent(暴力的) behavior. Finally, obeying school rules is also a way to avoid school bullies. It's everyone's duty to make schools safe. I hope all of us should be friendly to others and say no to bullying. Many countries have put forward the goal of striving(奋斗目标)to be carbon neutral. China is expected to be carbon neutral by 2060. So, as middle school students, what can we do to protect the environment and live a low carbon life? Here are some suggestions for you.Travel in a green way. Now more Chinese people have cars of their own. It has brought us a lot of benefits but has created some serious problems as well. So we’d better do more walking, cycling and less driving. The Young World magazine held a discussion on this topic(话题).Kennedy: The school uniform is very important, because it always reminds me that I should study hard. It also helps prevent school bullying(欺凌). If everyone wears the same clothes, it is impossible to laugh at other people’s clothing.Manson: The uniform has to be earned(获得)through efforts(努力). Students should start school with no uniforms. As they make progress at school, they start wearing it. I always think children need to be proud of their school. The uniform isimportant for that. So, make students earn it! If they don’t work well, they should not be allowed to get one.Moorhead: In my opinion, kids don’t have to wear uniforms. There should be more choices open to kids in education. They should develop their own independence(独立) and just be themselves. Their personalities(个性) would be expressed through their own clothes at school. And different dress could be one way of showing their understanding of beauty. Besides, they make the school lively and colorful.Patrick: I can see the advantages(优点) of wearing school uniforms. They play a very important role in managing schools. However, a school should not depend heavily on uniforms to improve students’ behaviors. 英语阅读:It’sNeverTooLate英语阅读:It’s Never Too LateSeveral years ago, while attending a communications course, I experienced a most unusual process. The next week, the man next to me raised his hand and volunteered this story:"While making my list, I remembered an incident from high school. No one ever found out."Nearly 20 years later, Sheriff Brown's name appears on my list. I didn't even know if he was still alive. Last weekend, I dialedinformation in my hometown back in Iowa. Sure enough, there was a Roger Brown still listed. I dialed his number. After a few rings, I heard: `Hello?' I said: `Sheriff Brown?’ Pause. `Yup.’ `Well, this is Jimmy Calkins. And I want you to know that I did it.’ Pause. `I knew it!’ he yelled back. We had a good laugh and a lively discussion. His closing words were: `Jimmy, I always felt badly for you because your buddies got it off their chest, and I knew you were carrying it around all these years. I want to thank you for calling me...for your sake.’"Jimmy inspired me to clear up all 101 items on my list. It took me almost two years, but became the springboard and true inspiration for my career as a conflict mediator. No matter how difficult the conflict, crisis or situation, I always remember that it's never too late to clear up the past and begin resolution.。

中考英语阅读理解专项训练-语言学习时间:8~10分钟/篇分值:2分/小题Passage 1Dear Merry,Recently, I have trouble with my study. In school I can't listen to teachers carefully because I always feel tired and sleepy. I don't spend time with friends after class either because I think it's a waste of time. I even miss writing some answers in the test. At home, I can't get my homework done every night. My parents don't let me stay up. So I have to get up early the next morning to finish it. Lately, I even get a bad headache. How can I solve these problems?Yours,Liu YaDear Liu Ya,When you have trouble listening to teachers carefully in class,you_can_ask_your_teachers_or_deskmate_to_remind_you_often. Allow me to share some with you.But first, let me give advice to other foreign students who plan to study in the United States. Check the weather before coming! I was very sure that California was sunny all year around so I left all my jackets and sweaters in Paris. It was a huge mistake! It rained almost every day during the first week in Berkeley.I have to say that I quickly forgot these unlucky events. Life in Berkeley is very pleasant and everything is so easy compared to Paris. For example, in only 24 hours I bought a mobile phone and made the lease(租约)agreement for a flat. What's more, almost all the shops are open on Sunday, which is very practical for me.The first thing that surprised me is that students may come late to class. They freely enter and leave the classroom many times during class. In France, students respect the teacher's lesson, so they are never late and they leave the classroom only at the end of the class. The local people in California are in general very nice, open and active. However, I am not totally used to their habits yet. Indeed, I was used to shaking my friends' hands every day in France. During my second day at Berkeley, I shook the hand of one of my classmates whom I had met the day before and he told me “I think we already met!”Another funny story happened during the first party I attended: A girl that I met before came to hug me, I thought she wanted to kiss me like we usually do in France to say hello. So I kissed her and she seemed a little bit embarrassed.I live a great experience at present, and I would just encourage any student to become a member in a program at UC, Berkeley.( )1. And what do the students do all day? Well, as soon as the sun comes up, they eat breakfast and start climbing up the mountain trail to the next campground, which is five to ten miles away. As the students take notes, the guide points out different plants and animals alongside the trail. The climb is usually over by early afternoon, so the group spends the rest of the day resting or swimming in a mountain lake. Before dinner each night, they all come together and discuss the day's activities. At the end of the course, the students write reports using the information they have collected. 2023名校版高考英语阅读理解精读含答案sw

2023名校版高考英语阅读理解精读含答案As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,”says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days aweek. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,”says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.”But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,”Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.32. What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?A. The right way of exercising.B. The causes of a heart attack.C. The difficulty of keeping fit.D. The aging process of the heart.33. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?A. Diet plan.B. Professional background.C. Exercise type.D. Previous physical condition.34. What does Levine’s research find?A. Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.B. High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.35. What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest?A. Making use of the findings.B. Interviewing the study participants.C. Conducting further research.D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.A new study shows that increases in extreme winter weather in parts of the US are linked to quickened warming of the Arctic.Over the past four decades, warming in the Arctic has been far more definite than that in the rest of the world and has caused a rapid decrease of summer sea ice. Heating in the Arctic has ultimately disturbed the circular pattern of winds known as the polar vortex (旋涡). As a result, it got stretched out of shape and slid southward off the pole. Scientists believe this vortex stretching process led to the deadly Texas cold wave in February this year.“The polar vortex over the Arctic usually locks in cold air at the poles and does not easily move south. The stronger thewinds, the more the air inside is kept, and the colder it gets,”explained lead researcher Dr. Judah Cohen, who’s a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “Melting ice in the Arctic and rising temperatures can disturb the Arctic vortex, making cold air no longer locked in the Arctic, but move some farther south.”The researchers say that their findings are based on both observations and modelling and they show a physical link between climate change in the Arctic, the stretching of the polar vortex and the impacts on ground. The researchers believe their work could improve predictions about the beginning of extreme cold winter events. The research team also believes that their findings will help people understand that global warming is complex and perhaps let go of the idea that colder winters mean climate change isn’t happening. “In the past, these cold extremes over the US and Russia have been used to justify not reducing carbon, but there’s no longer any excuse not to start reducing emissions right away,”said Dr. Cohen.28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A. The explanation given by scientists.B. The formation of Texas cold wave.C. The decrease of summer sea ice.D. The polar vortex’s being disturbed.29. What is the function of polar vortex?A. Preventing cold air from escaping.B. Helping cold air move freely.C. Accelerating the melting of ice.D. Making the wind stronger.30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. Global warming merely causes unnecessary fear.B. Weather-gone-wild pattern is a fantasy.C. Reducing emissions is a pressing matter.D. There’s no longer any excuse not to start reducing emissions.31. In which column of a website can the text probably be found?A. Entertainment.B. Tourism.C. Education.D. Environment.。

Created as recently as 2011, and mostly played by those aged over 50, walking football is a sport still in its infancy. For the uninitiated,it's football, but maybe not as you know it. The game certainly isn' t as slow as you might imagine. One foot has to remain on the ground at all times, so the ball has to be moved with accuracy 9 players having to find space to receive the pass. Often players are restricted to three touches of the ball before releasing it as a mechanism to cut down on any running. The rules are further slightly changed to ensure there? s minimal contact between players with no tackling from the side or from behind.Andy Fairburn is a regular at the sessions. Now in his early-seventies, Andy finds the game still has plenty to offer him.“I' ve been playing football since I was about 16, mainly Sunday League and then playing indoor five-a-side with work teams and then starting here. Getting older, your knees are knackered, your hips start to hurt, and I'll know when it's time to stop, but I've still got some time left to enjoy it. I am still competitive9 though, and old habits die hard. What I've enjoyed most is the friendship and meeting new people. We'v e all become friends. We talk about all kinds of things. ”For many who thought football was finished for them as a participation sport due to fitness and age, it's far from the case. Walking football is a sport played by those who've never kicked a ball before through to those skilled enough to play for their country, often on the same pitch. The game may be growing faster than its participants are allowed to move, but it's never too late to enjoy the thrill of kicking a ball around with like-minded people.9.What does the underlined word “infancy” mean in the first Paragraph?()A.An unusual thing to see.B.A beginning period of existence.C.An aging stage of advancement.D.A mature era of development.10.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? However, one tradition has continued to exist-the square graduation cap, commonly known as a mortarboard hat.European scholars have been wearing caps since the first universities were started in the 1lth century, but their early caps looked more like Amelia Earhart's pilot cap than the square caps we know today. Early scholars first used the pileus. By the14th century, pileus caps were becoming taller, similar to a modern chef's hat but shorter. This style, the “ pileus rotundus”, was used mainly by university students studying law, medicine, and science.By the middle of the 16th century, a new cap style made waves in universities: the“pileus quadratus",a soft, square cap that required less material to make. Soon the two styles, round and square, became symbols of different statuses. One century later at the University of Oxford, undergraduates wore the older, rounded caps, while those with higher degrees were allowed to wear the pileus quadratus. The first American colleges were started in the mid-1600s, and their class structures degree requirements followed famous and English universities. And European scholarly traditions were kept-including ideas of proper academic dress, Today, American graduates in law, medicine, and philosophy still wear rounded caps, but undergraduates always use the square cap.Although the square hat has a centuries old history, new cap traditions are popping up across the US. About 100 years ago, students began moving their tassels from the right side of their cap to the left. To this day there are no formal rules on where the tassel should be placed, but the act of moving it from one side to the other has been widely popular. While the ways in which we observe graduation may change, the four-cornered black hat will likely remain a sort of culture for academic achievements-a symbol of celebration with roots going back to medieval Europe.14.What can be known about the “pileus rotundus”?A.It is widely used by chefs today.B. It appeared earlier than the pileus.C.It was invented by an American scholar.D. It was worn by part of the college students.15.What does the underlined p hrase “made waves”in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Drew a lot of attention.B. Played a leading role.C.Lost some support.D. Fruitful QuestionsJames SollischThe other night at the dinner table, my three kids – ages 9,6 and 4 –took time out from their food fight to teach me about paradigm shifts, and limitations of linear thinking and how to refocus parameters.获益匪浅的问题詹姆斯·索利斯克不久前的一个晚上在餐桌旁,我的三个孩子──年龄分别为9岁、6岁和4岁--暂时停止争抢食物,腾出时间教我认识什么是范式变换、什么是线性思考的局限以及如何重新看待相关的各种因素。
Here's how it happened: We were playing our own oral version of the Sesame Street game, "What Doesn't Belong?" , where kids look at three pictures and choose the one that doesn't fit. I said, "OK, what doesn't belong, an orange, a tomato or a strawberry?"事情是这样的:当时我们在玩自己那套只动嘴的―哪个不是同一类?‖的芝麻街游戏。

Unit 2Some Quotes on learningThe root of education is bitter, but the fruit is sweet.—AristotleThe illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.- Alvin TofflerWhat I hear, I forget. What I see, I remember. What I do, I understand.- ConfuciusThe test and the use of man’s education is that he finds pleasure in the exercise of his mind. —Jacques BarzunThat is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life, but in a new way.–Doris LessingWhoever neglects learning in his youth, loses the past and is dead for the future.–EuripidesI have never in my life learned anything from any man who agreed with me.- Dudley Field MaloneAnyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.- Henry FordAlways walk through life as if you have something new to learn and you will.- Vernon HowardThe most useful piece of learning for the uses of life is to unlearn what is untrue.- AntisthenesPersonally, I am always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught.- Winston ChurchillWe learn by example and by direct experience because there are real limits to the adequacy ofverbal instruction.- Malcolm GladwellPreview questions1. What does the writer want to tell readers?2. Am I pleased with my own English study? What makes me successful or unsuccessful in learning? What measures will I take to improve my study?Text 1It’s Never Too Late for SuccessYou and your parents can stop worrying ─Pasture, Edison, Darwin and lots of more were far from being geniuses in their teens. History books seldom mention it, but the truth is that many of our greatest figures were practically “beatniks” when they were te enagers. They were given to daydreaming, indecision, and they showed no promise of being doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief. So, young men and women, if you suffer from the same symptoms, don’t despair. The world was built by men and women whose parents worried that they would “never amount to a hill of beans”. You don’t hear too much about their early failure because parents prefer to cite more inspiring examples.A Man They Don’t Tell You AboutIf you take piano lessons and your attitude towards practicing is marked by laziness, your parents might justly complain and flaunt before you the famous picture of little Mozart in his ruffled nightshirt, playing the piano at midnight in the attic. But the point is, your parents would not show you a picture of a certain party who never showed a bit of interest in music during his formative years. In fact he never showed talent in any direction whatever. Finally put to studying law, he barely passed his final exams. It was not until he was 22 that he suddenly became fired with a great passion for music, and his name was Peter Iluitch Tschaikowsky. In the science, there have been hundreds of geniuses who aimed straight at the goal from earliest years, and hundreds who showed no aptitude at all. There were the teen-age Mayo brothers, who actually assisted their father [in his crude country] operating room. On the other hand, Harvey Cushing, one of the world’s greatest brain surgeons, might have become a professional ballplayer if his father hadn’t pleaded that he give medicine a try.The great Pasteur’s parents were in despair because teen-age Louis did nothing but draw pictures and go fishing. Pasture was 20 years old before he became even faintly interested in science.Edison Was “Addled”So it goes. You have the Wright brothers, who were brilliant at engineering in their early teens, and you have Thomas Alva Edison, whose teacher tried to get him out of the class because his brain was “addled.”You have the Nobel Prize physicist Enrico Fermi, who at 17 had read enough mathematics to qualify for a doctor’s degree. And you have the great. Albert Schweitzer, who hesitated between music and the church until he was 30. Then he started his medical studies.Darwin Hated SchoolCharles Darwin’s early life was a mess. He hated school, and his father once shouted: “You care for nothing but shooting dogs and rat-catching, and you will be a disgrace to yourself and all your family!”He was sent to Glasgow to study medicine, but he couldn't stand the sight of blood. He was sent to divinity school and barely managed to graduate. Whereupon he gave up the whole business and shipped to the South Seas on the famous exploring ship Beagle. On that voyage, one of history’s greatest scientists was born. It was here that he coll ected the material for the book that would revolutionize biological science The Origin of the Species.Faulkner Failed in EnglishPolitics offers a familiar example of contrast. Herbert Hoover must have learned administration in the cradle. When he was at school he was chosen as football manager, though he didn’t know the game, and the glee club manager, though he couldn’t sing a note. Whatever he touched went smoothly, glee club or food for a starving Europe. But one of his successors in the White House had about as checkered a youth as can be imagined. Turned down by West Point because of poor vision, Harry Truman tried a dozen jobs, including stretches in a drugstore, a bank, a bottling works, and a railroad yard. But he got there just the same.Great writers are supposed to be born, not made, but here again there are many fascinating exceptions. William Faulkner quit school in the fifth grade and wandered around the country as a house painter and a dishwasher.12:04 2009-5-20 Once he tried attending college, but failed in freshman English and quit. He got a postmaster’s job in a small Mississippi town, and infuriated the populace by getting the mail all mixed up and closing the office whenever he felt like it.And just to show that girls can be as confusing as boys, take Pearl Buck, who from early youth made it a point to write at least a few lines every day of her life. Then take Edna Ferber, whose sole ambition was to be an actress; she never even thought of writing anything until she was in her 20’s and had to take a $3-a-week job on a newspaper to help her family. How about Those Prodigies? And added to all the aforementioned paradoxes you have a small army of child prodigies who were graduated from college when they were 15, and are now obscure clerks in accounting departments. And you have a small army of men who were too stupid or lazy to get into or finish college and who are today presidents of the firms that hire the prodigies. So who’s to say what about youth? Any young boy or girl who knows what he wants to do in life is probably the better off for it. But no teen-ager need despair of the future. He has that one special advantage over the greatest man alive─time! If you don’t think time counts, look at Grandma Moses. She never sold a painting till she was 80.Words and ExpressionsGenius n.天才, 天赋, 天才人物gift, inspiration, intelligence, master, prodigy, talent, wizard;beatnik n.
