INTRODUCTION A cognitive-social learning model of social skills training has been used to teach prosocial skills to children with low peer acceptance (Bierman & Furman, 1984). An underlying premise of this social skills training is that children with low peer acceptance do not have the social skills required to develop and maintain positive peer relationships (Asher & Renshaw, 1981; Coie, Dodge, & Kupersmidt, 1990; Hughes & Cavell, 1995; Ladd, Price, & Hart, 1988). The training model assumes that acquiring appropriate social skills requires that children have the ability to understand the concept of social skills, translate the concept into actions, and monitor his/ her performances (Mize, 1995). Consequently, to help children enhance peer acceptance, the training model focuses on not only behavioral changes but also on cognitive learning.
Peer acceptance is defined as the degree to which an individual child is liked and/or disliked by all the members of his or her social group (Asher, Parker, & Walker, 1996; Ladd, 1988; Parker & Gottman, 1989). Peer acceptance emerges during pre-kindergarten years (Ladd & Coleman, 1993), because children in this period show increased social activities and form relationships with peers (Vandell & Mueller, 1980). Wellaccepted children are regarded in a positive way by most group members, whereas children with low peer acceptance are ignored or disliked by group members. A number of studies have supported the important influence of peer acceptance on academic achievement, adjustment in school, and psychological wellbeing in adulthood. On teachers’ ratings, kindergarten children who were rejected by peers have been shown to be less academically skilled than other children (Pettit, Clawson, Dodge, & Bates, 1996). Additionally, elementary school children who were rejected by their peers showed lower composite achievement test scores than those who were accepted by their peers (DeRosier, Kupersmidt, & Patterson, 1994). Kindergarten and firstgrade children also reported feelings of loneliness when they were rejected by peers (Cassidy & Asher, 1992), and children expressed dislike of, or the desire to avoid 41

Peer acceptance during early childhood is related to children’s academic achievement, adjustment in school, and even psychological well-being in adulthood. Children who experience low peer acceptance exhibit socially inappropriate behavior patterns, which are associated with irrelevant patterns of information processing. Therefore, as a way of helping children with low peer acceptance, a cognitive-social learning model of social skills training has been used because the model focuses on cognitive changes as well as behavioral changes. Three parts of the social skills training—enhancing skill concepts, promoting skill performance, and fostering skill maintenance/generalization—are discussed. In order to be successful, a trainer should understand the training model as well as behavioral patterns of children with low peer acceptance to provide theory-based and individualized feedback to each participant.

42 the school environment when they were victimized by peers (Kochenderfer & Ladd, 1996; Ladd, Kochenderfer, & Coleman, 1997). In general, children with low peer acceptance show tendencies to drop out of school, engage in delinquent behavior, or suffer from more psychological problems in their later lives than those who have higher peer acceptance (Parker & Asher, 1987). Thus, establishing and maintaining positive relationships with peers during early childhood is often of the utmost importance (Hartup, 1992). How children process social information in a series of sequential information processing (i.e., encoding relevant stimulus cues, interpreting those cues, generating responses, evaluating responses, and enacting selected responses) is related to their degree of peer acceptance or social behavior patterns. For example, children who showed socially competent behavior (e.g., frequent peer group entry) encoded relevant information more frequently, generated less aggressive responses, and displayed more competent enactment skills than those who did not show social competency (Dodge & Price, 1994; Harrist, Zaia, Bates, Dodge, & Pettit, 1997). In contrast, children with low peer acceptance tended to be less attentive to relevant social cues (Dodge & Tomlin, 1987), interpreted peers’ intention cues less accurately or in a biased manner (Dodge, 1980; Quiggle, Garber, Panak, & Dodge, 1992; Sancilio, Plumert, & Hartup, 1989; Slaby & Guerra, 1988), showed maladaptive or aggressive social problem-solving response patterns, and did not offer as many alternative solutions as well-accepted children when asked to show their responses to hypothetical social situations (French, 1990; Ramsey, 1988; Richard & Dodge, 1982; Rubin, Daniels-Beirness, & Bream, 1984). Thus, children’s low peer acceptance can be understood in terms of their inappropriate social behaviors, which are related to deficiencies in social cognition or information processing. From this point of view, a cognitive-social learning model of social skills training is considered an effective approach for children with low peer acceptance because it focuses on cognitive learning as well as behavioral changes. A COGNITIVE-SOCIAL LEARNING MODEL OF SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING FOR CHILDREN WITH LOW PEER ACCEPTANCE The cognitive-social learning model of social skills training is based on the assumption that children conceptualize a certain behavior first, then transform the conceptual representation into action, and finally modify their performance as a result of its outcomes (Ladd &
