I was sitting at my kitchen table the other day with a pen, notebook, calculator and a pile of bills. I was doing my monthly budget. There were bills for electric water, rent, insurance, the car payment, the phone bill, and the cable bill. Plus money needed to be set aside for food, gas, clothes and hopefully a little left over to save for those unexpected bills that always seemed to show up. When I was done, I shook my head, closed my eyes and thought of a time long ago when I would regularly get treasures.
When I was a boy. we lived across the road from Camp Caesar. It held week long camps all through the summer and my grandma who I lovingly called “Nanny” w orked in her big kitchen. I remember slipping there getting a smile, a hug, a kiss and a hot roll from Nanny. Then she would always take deep in her pockets and pull out a treasure, a shiny quarter. She would give it to me and I would run down the hill to either get an ice cold can of coke from the pop machine or I would head to the camp’s swimming pool where I could buy a warm cup of cherry coke for 15 cents and a tiny 10 cent bag of chips from a stand. I took my time because it was always a big decision. It was nice too feeling so rich for a few minutes.
Looking back now I can see that the real treasure was not the quarter at all. It was the love with which Nanny gave it to me. I would have still visited her at work every day if I had never gotten a single quarter. It was her smile, hugs, and kisses that were priceless in my heart then and now.
The old saying is true, “With your work you can make a living, but it is with your love that you make a life.” You can always welcome love into your heart, soul and mind. And you can always share your love with others. It is that one treasure that lasts forever.
4. According to Paragraph 1, what was the author trying to figure out?
A. Where to get treasures.
B. What food and supplies to buy.

D. How to balance the money available.

6. Which of the following best describes Nanny?

B. Generous.
C. Affectionate.

A. To change people’s heart and soul.
B. To show what we should value in life.

There you are, looking through your WeChat moments or your Weibo feed, and you come across a post saying something like this: “I just got accepted to Harvard and 0xford! Are they sure they didn’t mix my applications up with somebody else’s?”
This person is clearly humblebragging. The te rm “humblebrag” was first coined back in 2010 by the late US comedian Harris Wittels, and it describes when someone makes a seemingly modest statement, but the actual purpose is to bring attention to something they are proud of.
The example above is a modesty-b ased humblebrag. The person wants to tell others: “I got accepted to Harvard and Oxford!” However, they don't want to seem too proud of their accomplishments. So, instead, they word it in a way to be more modest and bring down the importance of their achievements.
Although people who humblebrag think it will make them more likeable because they aren’t talking proudly about their victories, a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology showed that humblebragging actually has the opposite effect.
“Humblebragging doesn’t have the intended result because it seems insincere. That ‘poor me’ attitude combined with self-promotion does not lead to a favorable impression,” said Ovul Sezer, the lead author of the study and an assistant professor of organizational behavior at the University of North Carolina, US. “ Even simply bragging or complaining (抱怨) is better, because at least those messages are seen as more sincere.”
Sezer’s study also found that nearly 60% of humblebrags were complaint-based humblebragging, with most people humblebragging about their looks, followed by their money or wealth, and finally about their performance at work. “It’s such a common phenomenon. All of us know some people in our lives, whether in the social media or in the workplace, who do this annoying thing,” commented Sezer, adding that we all do it to some extent.
So, i f you want to share your achievements with others, what’s the best way to do it then? Sezer suggests that people admit their self-promotion and harvest the rewards of being sincere. She also suggests finding a
go-between, adding, “If someone brags for you, that’s the best thing that can happen to you, because then you don’t seem like you’re bragging.”
8. The underlined word “coined” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A. recognized
B. invented
C. bought
D. copied
9. Which of the following can be considered as humblebragging?
A. Hesitating to talk about your achievements.
B. Bringing people’s attention to your achievements.
C. Talking proudly about your achievements in the social media.
D. Pretending to be modest when talking about your achievements.
10. What is Sezer’s attitude towards humblebragging?
A. Cautious.
B. Ambiguous.
C. Supportive.
D. Disapproving.
11. What does Sezer suggest people do when it comes to sharing achievements?
A. Share their achievements with their best friends.
B. Bring down the importance of their achievements.
C. Find someone else to talk about their achievements.
D. Talk about their achievements after someone else does.
B 9. D 10. D 11. D

Nowadays with the popularity of the Internet many peopl e complain of the difficulty of finding their “true” identity in amongst all the conflicting messages and demands of the world around them.
This idea, that , somewhere deep down, is the “real” us, is as old as philosophy itself. It involves things lik e our values, our sense of purpose, the beliefs that make us who we are. We often ask the question, “Are you living the life you want to be living , or the life other people want you to live?”
The Internet has brought the opinions of others to our own lives as never before, and it is threatening our ability to understand who we really are.
To discover our true selves, maybe it’s time to disconnect. Not forever, that would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater, but for significant periods of our days, weeks, or months. Because, with disconnection comes quiet and with quiet comes the ability to reflect.
In researching my World Service documentary Default World, I spoke to a lot of people about their experience of technology. Many said they were trying to spend less time online, taking a break from Facebook, connecting only when they needed to. And they spoke with pleasure of rediscovering the physical world around them and the world of human-to-human communication. I think this is encouraging.
We are still learning how to be on the Internet, what effect this huge network of computers---a network we have built ourselves---has on our sense of self. We are at the moment, as Thoreau said of people in the industrial revolution, “tools of our tools”.
Disconnecting gives us a chance to turn the tables to see the Internet not as something that overwhelms (使不知所措) us but as a tool, which we use when we need it. Only then can we really understand who we are and what we can give the world. And that, deep down, is the real toot of our identity.
12. What makes it difficult for us find the “real” us?
A. The fast pace of our modem life.
B. The flood of online messages.
C. Losing our sense of purpose.
D. Lacking values and beliefs.
13. What should we do first to discover our true selves according to the text?
A. Spend time studying philosophy.
B. Rediscover the physical world.
C. Take a break from the Internet.
D. Build a good social relationship.
14. What does the underlined phrase “turn the tables” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. To win a victory.
B. To follow a trend.
C. To change the situation.
D. To solve the problem.
15. In which part of a newspaper can we read the text?
A. Lifestyle.
B. Nature.
C. Science.
D. Health.
B 13. C 14. C 15. A

故选C。

Will Covid-19 Kill the Handshake?
The handshake might date back to the 14th century, when knights (骑士) and soldiers would extend their unclenched(松开的) right hands toward each other in greeting to show that they were carrying no weapons.
____16____ Or rather, its tendency for picking up and holding onto germs (细菌) from polluted surfaces, or from our own eyes or noses when we have certain illnesses. Those germs can then be transferred into the hands of the people we greet, while we can pick up their germs. We then will probably touch our own eyes or noses or mouths, potentially sickening ourselves and restarting the cycle.
Now that a novel coronavirus is spreading fast, our hands are being cast in a new, doubtful light. ____17____ And lately, the Internet has been full of suggestions for socially acceptable ways to greet each other that don’t involve passing germs along unintentionally from one person to the next.
____18____ In fact, the tradition of shaking hands isn’t the only greeting to take a fresh look. A Maori tribe in New Zealand put the brakes on hongi, the traditional nose-to-nose hello. ____19____ Maybe people will stop making fun of the Hollywood air kiss, though it’s not a huge improvement health-wise.
COVID-19 is a real threat, and we shouldn’t take the warning lightly. We may, indeed, need to keep our hands to ourselves for the time being. But we’re not ready to send handshake into the dustbin of history. Humans long for making a physical connection with friends. For now, perhaps, a regretful smile and nod might work as a shared acknowledgment. ____20____
A. Could we hug each other or nod?
B. Could this be the end of the handshake?
C. As we all know, shaking hands has become a habit.
D. After all, our friendly intentions were not to infect or be infected by others.
E. These days, it would seem, the potential weapon isn’t a kn ife, but the hand itself.
F. We’re being drilled in handwashing techniques as if we were all second-graders.
G. The French have been advised to abandon the familiar kiss on the cheek greeting.
E 17. F 18. B 19. G 20. D
前文“they were carrying no weapons”(他们没有携带武器)对应E选项中的"the potential weapon "。
Those germs can then be transferred into the hands of the people we greet, while we can pick up their germs. We
then will probably touch our own eyes or noses or mouths, potentially sickening ourselves and restarting the cycle.”(这些细菌随后会传到我们问候的人的手中,而我们也会沾染他们的细菌。
根据前文“Now that a novel coronavirus is spreading fast, our hands are being cast in a new, doubtful light.”(现在一种病毒正在迅速传播,我们的双手正被投上新的、怀疑的目光。
)可知,此处是指人们怀疑病毒会通过手传播,所以要洗手,根据后文“And lately, the Internet has been full of suggestion s for socially acceptable ways to greet each o ther that don’t involve passing germs along unintentionally from one person to the next.”(最近,互联网上到处都是关于社会上可以接受的互相问候方式的建议,这些方式不会无意中把病菌从一个人传给另一个人。
根据后文“In fact, the tradition of shaking hands isn’t the only greeting to take a fresh look. A Maori tribe in New Zealand put the brakes on hongi, the traditional nose-to-nose hello.”(事实上,握手的传统并不是唯一能让人重新审视的问候方式。
根据前文“A Maori tribe in New Zealand put the brakes on hongi, the traditional nose-to-nose hello.”(新西兰的一个毛利部落对传统的“鼻子对鼻子”问候语“hongi”踩了刹车。
)和后文“Maybe people will stop making fun of the Hollywood ai r kiss, though it’s not a huge improvement health-wise.”(也许人们会停止取笑好莱坞的空中接吻,尽管这并不是一个巨大的改善健康的明智之举。
根据前文“Humans long for making a physical connection with friends. For now, perhaps, a regretful smile and nod might work as a shared acknowledgment. ”(人类渴望与朋友建立身体上的联系。
现在,也许,一个遗憾的微笑和点头可以作为一个共同的承认。
)可知,此处是指虽然人们希望通过身体接触表达友好,但是现在为了不感染别人或不被感染,应该避免身体接触。
所以选项D“毕竟,我们友好的意图是不感染别人或不被感染。
”切合文意。
故选D。
