A study has found that a lifetime of regular exercise and activity can slow down the aging process (衰老过程). Researchers say that getting older should not necessarily mean becoming more weak or sick. Their research shows that a devotion to a life of movement and exercise may help us live not only longer, but also healthier.
For their study, the researchers looked at two groups. The first group was made up of 125 non-professional cyclists between the ages of 55 to 79. This group included 84 healthy men and 41 healthy women. We will call this group the “cyclists”.
Researchers then found 130 people to make up a second group. Within this group, 75 people were aged from 57 to 80. The other 55 were between the ages of 20 and 36. The people in this group were also healthy, but they did not exercise regularly. We will call this group the “non-exercisers”. Smokers, heavy drinkers of alcohol and people with other health issues were not included in the study.
Then, researchers gave both groups a series of tests. They tested their muscle mass (肌肉质量), muscular strength, percentage of body fat and the strength of their immune (免疫的) systems. Then the researchers compared the results of the two groups.
Results showed that the cyclists did not experience body changes usually regarded as a normal aging process. For example, they did not lose muscle mass or muscular strength. Also, their body fat did not increase with age.
The researchers also found something they had not expected. The study showed that the immune systems of the cyclists did not age either.
The researchers advise us all to find an exercise that we like in our lives.
4. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By comparing.
B. By discussing.
C. By imagining.
D. By reasoning.
5. Which of the following is a result of the research?
A. The cyclists kept a thin body shape.
B. The non-exercisers gained weight easily.
C. The cyclists’ muscles remained strong with age.
D. The non-exercisers usually had health problems.
6. Which is an unexpected result for the researchers?
A. The cyclists had normal aging process.
B. The cyclists’ immune systems didn’t age.
C. The cyclists lost nearly all their fat.
D. Everyone needed an exercise in their lives.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Healthy People Need More Exercise
B. Take an Exercise, the Harder, the Better
C. Cycling Is the Best Way to Prevent Aging
D. A Lifetime of Exercise Slows Aging Process

Coke was introduced by the Coca Cola company in 1886, making it a rather true andtested favorite of generations of people in over 200 countries. This list should give you some ideas on how to get more from your coke than usual.
. Coca Cola is an excellent rust buster (除锈剂). If you have a bunch of small rusty objects, put them in coke overnight and give them a goodscrubin the morning. Coke helps to break down the rust, making cleaning much easier. Be sure to throw out the used coke when you are done with it or you might be taking a trip to the doctor.
. Like the previous item, the citric acid (柠檬酸) in coke makes for an excellent window cleaner. This is especially useful for car windows. Pour a can of coke over the window and rub the window, then wipe it off with a wet cloth to remove any sugary matter from the sugar in the drink. As coke is fullof sugar, you should clean the sticky matter off the window glasses, or it will be not a cleaner but a dirt.
. For those of you who live in areas where skunk (臭鼬) smells can be an issue from time to time, one can of coke added to water with detergent (清洁剂) really helps to break the smell down. If you have been sprayed, stand in the shower and cover yourself from head to toe with coke — wait for a few minutes, then wash yourself
with a shower. Coke is an excellent hair treatment so you get two tips for the price of one with this item!
. Pots can sometimes get black on the bottom. The black is almost impossible to remove; this is caused by over-cooking. To remove the black and renew your pot, pour in a can of coke (or as much as you need to cover the blackened area by an inch) and put it on the stove on a low heat. After an hour or so, wash the pot as normal.
8. What does the underlined word “scrub”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Start.
B. Cleaning.
C. Shake.
D. Example.
9. What is important while using coke to clean car windows?
A. Use a dry cloth.
B. Rub the window lightly.
C. Don’t pour too much coke.
D. Clean the sugary matter thoroughly.
10. For which purpose does coke have to be mixed with other material?
A. To get rid of the black on the pot.
B. To breakdown the rust,
C. To remove smells.
D. To clean windows.
11. What type of writing is this text?
A. An advertisement.
B. A review.
C. A news report.
D. A practical guide.

My first week working in a restaurant, one of the servers said something that stuck with me: Everyone should work in a restaurant for at least a year. At the time, I didn't get it, but I took the advice to heart and worked in restaurants on and off for the next eight years. Before realizing it, I mastered many important skills, one of which is communication skill.
When I was little, I was so shy that I used to hide behind my mom whenever someone spoke to me. And when I first started in restaurants, I had two personalities: Restaurant Lizzy and Home Lizzy. It was easier to pretend to be a different person while at work, since it was so different from who I actually was. But gradually, the skills I learned working in restaurants helped Home Lizzy come out of her shell in the real world.
When you work in a restaurant, you don't have the luxury of hiding behind your parents to avoid talking to
people. I'm still 110% an introvert, but restaurant work helped me communicate. Working in a restaurant not only helped me speak clearly, deliberately and directly but also taught me how to talk about almost everything. Some guests don't want their servers to interact too much with them, and that's fine. But some sit at the bar simply to chat with you. You learn how to judge your guests' level of interest in communicating with you, and how to exit a conversation at the appropriate time.
My restaurant work is something that I'm most proud of and I know I wouldn't be the person I am today without those eight years of experience. If you're still on the fence about working in a restaurant for that long, start with one year. I doubt that you'll look back.
12. What did the writer think of the server's words?
A. Impressive.
B. Ridiculous.
C. Amusing.
D. Logical.
13. What do we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. The writer tried different jobs.
B. The writer became more sociable.
C. The writer used an invented name.
D. The writer had a hard time at work.
14. Which of the following best describes the writer's restaurant work?
A. Boring.
B. Relaxing.
C. Worthwhile.
D. Unchallenging.
15. What message does the writer try to convey in this passage?
A. A strong-willed soul can reach his goal.
B. Things are difficult before they are easy.
C. Communication skills advance your career.
D. Restaurantwork helps to achieve a better self.

A Diet Without Enough Protein Can Cause Depression
Depression is a condition so common, the World Health Organization (WHO) calls it “a leading cause of disability.”
Difficulty in falling asleep, loss of appetite, and loss of ability to concentrate are just a few of the other effects of depression. WHO estimates that worldwide, at any one time, 350 million people suffer from the condition. While life events such as the loss of a spouse or a job may create a happening of depression, many cases come from within and are not caused by a life event.
Now scientists are working on a new aspect of cure: nutrition.___16___The Indian Journal of
Psychiartryreports that both before and during a happening of depression, those with the condition will show a “poor appetite…”___17___Many cases of depression, if not most cases, affect those who don’t eat properly.
So what does protein have to do with all this? It all comes down to amino acids (氨基酸). Proteins are made up of amino acids, chemicals known as the “building blocks of life.” There are 20 different amino acids.___18___
Both the human brain and nervous system use amino acids as a substance that creates a signal from one brain cell to another or one nerve cell to another, thus relaying information between the cells. What the final result then?___19___
Since amino acids make up protein, a diet which lacks in protein will cause weaker communication between the brain cells. This lessens the signal being sent from one brain cell to the next during a thought.___20___This is why depression can often express itself as anger or aggression.
A.The ultimate effect is how we think.
B.Don't ruin your appetite by eating between meals.
C.Skipping meals itself can create a depressed mood.
D.A new research suggests that nutrition can lessen some of the risks of depression.
E.India is perhaps the world’s leader in researching the connection between diet and depression.
F.Many of them are made by the human body, but nine others, the “essential” amino acids, must be eaten in one’s diet.
G.The process can lead to twisted signals, which can not only lead to depression, but also, according to many scientists, aggression.

Usually given too much care and attention, you are likely to take everything for granted. In Teenager Volunteer Day, teenagers are encouraged to do voluntary works wherever they are needed.
