A new report says promising children money to pass exams does not help their exam grades. It could be a waste of money using cash to get kids to study more. However, the promise of a trip could encourage students to try harder and do
better at school.Scientists looked at how promises of money and tickets to shows affected students' studying and learning. Over 10,000 pupils took part in the survey in 2016.There was an improvement in homework, but this did not result in better test scores.
Lead researcher Dr Simon Burgess thought the survey showed something important and interesting. He said it had not found something that really got students to work harder. He added that,"Clearly, some pupils have a lot of goals and believe that education is very important in life, but there are kids who think that working hard doesn't make a difference. He said these children think exam success is "all in your genes(基因)"because of their family background.

Is there anything that you do to cheer yourself up and "heal(治愈)"your mind when you're feeling down? Many of us have our own ways to make ourselves feel better. This is referred to as"self-care".
This idea originated(起源)in Japan. It refers to any activity that can soothe one's nerves(平缓心绪),clear one's mind, and comfort a troubled heart, according to China News Service. It was first used to describe the music of Japanese songwriter Ryuichi Sakamoto(坂本龙-)in 1999.
Self-care is now booming(急速发展)in China as well. One of the most popular activities is"healing travel".According to Caissa Touristic,a Beijing-based travel agency, more Chinese tourists are going on meditation(冥想)or yoga retreats in places like Japan,Bali and India. By taking these trips, people can learn more about local culture and the way people in these countries live.Without a tour guide or detailed plan, they allow their bodies and minds to relax as they forget about daily stresses and noisy surroundings(周遭事物)back home.
Having a pet can also help to improve our mental health. Research has shown that pets and humans can heal each other,NPR reported.Strong human-to-animal bonds(情感联系)make both pets and their owners happier and healthier. Chinese dog and cat owners spent over 5,000 yuan per pet on average in 2018. China's pet industry now has a value of over 170 billion
yuan,Xinhua reported.
More people are seeking out self-care activities simply because they can finally afford to,particularly China's growing middleclass(中产阶级). With fewer financial(务的)worries, they can slow down and take a closer look at their own inner(内心的)world, the Paper noted.

I grew up in the 1960s. I was taught from an early age to send a handwritten thank-you note showing gratitude for kindness. My mother used to buy me a box of stationery(信纸)and teach me the value of saying "thank you." She turned out to be right.
Amit Kumar is a professor at the University of Texas. He said that people liked getting thank-you notes. However, most of us underestimate(低估)the positive feelings they will bring. He asked volunteers how they felt after they received thank-you notes. Many said they were "extremely happy."
Dr Kumar found that it took most volunteers less than five minutes to write the thank-you notes. Just five minutes to make another person feel"extremely happy"!Yet,in reality, the idea of getting an actual pen, writing an actual note, finding a stamp and a mailbox, never seems to come to mind.We usually do what is convenient for us---a quick text or an email.
It's easy to say "I'm busy" but even very busy businessmen find time to write thank-you notes.Take Doug Conant for example. When he became CEO of Campbell's Soup, the company had lost half of its market value. It was bad for morale (士气). He started fixing that by writing to every employee. In his ten years as Campbell's CEO,Conant wrote over 30,000 notes in all. Not surprisingly, the company turned around.
While people always like getting thank-you notes, sending the note in time is also important. The late(已故的)Princess Diana(戴安娜王妃)was known to write a note as soon as she returned home from an event and have it posted right away.
Professor Kumar's experiment,Doug Conant and Princess Diana prove my mother's instruction that an expression of kindness in this fast-paced world still works. Thanks,Mom.
