英语试卷
一、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
A
China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found it is not true. Ther e are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It’ s fun watching peop le biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather came with my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的).To be safe,I stayed with a pack of bikers while cars on the streets came running fast out of nowhere at times. I didn’ t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was pleasant. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
1. According to the writer, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A.Because they are safe.
B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C.Because they are colorful and fast.
D.Because they are fast.
2. The writer decided to buy a bicycle because he planned ________.
A.to ride it for fun
B.to use it for transport
C.to experience local culture
D.to improve his riding skills
3.Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience?
A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C.The author was encouraged by the other bikers.
D.The author took great pleasure in biking.
B
Growing roots
When I was a child, I had an old neighbour named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any other doctor I’d ever known. He never shouted at us for playing in his yard. I remember him as a kind person.
When Dr.Gibbs didn’t work, he planted trees. His house covered an area of ten acres, and his life’s goal was to make it a forest.
He had some interesting theories concerning planting. He came from the “No pains, no gains” school of gardening. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said, “Watering plants will spoil them, and if you water them, each successive tree generation will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and weed out the tiny trees.”
So he never watered his trees. He would plant an oak(橡树),and instead of watering it every morning, he beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did so, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
I planted a couple of trees a few years ago. I carried water to them for a solid summer, sprayed them and prayed over them. Two years of caring has resulted in trees that expect to be waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows in, they tremble their branches. Sissy(胆小的)trees.
Dr. Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Now and again, I walked by his house and looked at the trees. They ’re strong now. Big and strong.
Funny things about Dr.Gibbs’ trees. Adversity(逆境)and suffering seemed to benefit them while comfort and ease never could.
Life is tough, whether we want it to be or not. Too many times we pray for ease, but that’s what a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the earth, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be swept away.
4. What did the author think of Dr. Gibbs ? He was _______.
A. lazy and stubborn
B. kind and wise
C. generous and open-minded
D. mean and narrow-minded
5. How did Dr. Gibbs plant his oak?
A. He was too busy to water it.

C. He sometimes watered it.
D. He often beat it to get its attention.
6. What were the author’s trees like?
A. The more care he gave, the better the trees grew.
B. They grew strong and big because of great care.
C. They were very weak in spite of his hard work.
D. They often trembled with cold.
7. By introducing Dr. Gibbs’ theory concerning planting, the author means that _______.
A. No pain, no gains.
B. Life is not easy.
C. Experience is the best teacher.
D. Hardship benefits one in life.

A new research tells us that in near future our computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The programme works because everyone's eyes are different. Therefore, in the future you won't have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You'll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition programme has already been tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are also working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even our smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don't change as you get older, and don't get dirty like hands or fingers, and even twins have different eyes. The eye-recognition programme can be up to 94% correct depending on how good the technology is. However, some other programmes may only be 51% correct at present, In Britain,it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that only liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!
8 .What can we learn from the programme?
A.You don't need to remember a number to draw money now.
B.The programme has replaced other ways to recognize people.
C.It will be some time before the programme works.
D.It is no use working on other system because of having the programme.
9.Where has the eye-recognition programme already been tested in a few countries?
A.In shops and school.
B.In shops and banks
C.In banks and schools.
D.In schools and hospitals.
10.We already have machines that can tell who you are from _____________.
A.your eyes or your smell
B.your face or your voice
C.your voice or the mark by your finger
D.your face or your hand
11.Which of the following doesn't belong to the advantages of the eye-recognition programme?
A.We can't see anything without eyes.
B.Eyes don't get dirty like hands or fingers.
C.Your eyes don't change as you get older.
D.Everyone's eyes are different, even twins included.

Packaging(包装) is an important form of advertising. A package can sometimes motivate someone to buy a product. For example, a small child may ask for a breakfast food that comes in a box with a picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or cut out, games printed on a package, or small gifts inside a box also motivate many children to buy products or ask their parents for them.
Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are examples of this. Although a similar product in a plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product.
The size of a package also motivates a buyer. Maybe the package has "Economy Size" or "Family Size" printed on it. This suggests that the large size has the most product for least money. But that is not always true. To find out, a buyer has to know how the product is sold and the price of the basic unit.
The information on the package should provide some answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember is that a package is often an advertisement. The words and the pictures do not tell the whole story. Only the products inside can do that.
12. The underlined word "motivate" most probably means ________.
A. making one deep in thought
B. giving a thought or feeling that makes one act
C. telling a story that makes one moved
D. making one believe what he does is true
13. “a buyer will get something for nothing” (p2) most probably means that a buyer will _______.
A. get something useful free of charge
B. get what he pays for
C. gain more than he loses
D. not get what he wants
14. Which of the following statements is not mentioned in the passage ?
A. A package is often a successful advertisement.
B. Children are often made to buy a product by its package with attractive pictures.
C. A buyer is also attracted by the size of the container.
D. Once seeing a well-designed container, a buyer often pays no attention to what is inside it.
15. What suggestion does the author give in the passage ?
A. Do not buy the product that is sold in a glass or dish.
B. The quality of a container has nothing to do with the quality of the product.
C. A buyer should get what he needs most.
D. The best choice for a buyer is to get a product in a plain package.
