Terry Thomas has a very boring job, although it pays very well. What Terry does is sitting in a rowboat all day long. He makes$16. 37 all hour, which is certainly all excellent wage for sitting in a little boat and doing nothing.
The boat stays all day under a bridge that is being rebuilt. There is a distance of about 100 feet between the boat and the workers on the bridge overhead. To qualify for the job,a person must be an excellent swimmer and have training in lifesaving skills. Only a few men on the work crew meet those standards. Before Terry took the boat job, several others had it and gave up because they found it sotedious.

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid?Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences?Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out ofa child born with low intelligence. On the other hand,a child who lives in a borning environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits ofa person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment。

This view, now held by most experts can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to say that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closerthe blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population,it is likely that their degrees ofintelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine that now we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one,for example,to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all,are likelyto have similar degrees ofintelligence.
40. By using the example that two people closer in blood relationship are closer in intelligence that writer wants to prove.

D. these surroundings are likely to help him reach the limits oftheir intelligence

A. t he development of one’s intelligence is determined by many fac tors working together
B. environment plays the most important role in the development of intelligence

At least 10 million hectares of cultivated〔耕作〕land in China are polluted, which makes a grave threat to the country’s food safety, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Fr iday.
The polluted land, which is mostly in economically developed areas, accounts for one-tenthof the country’s total arable〔可耕种的〕land, according to an incomplete survey by the StateEnvironmental Protection Administration,China’s top environment watchdog.
Pollution on cultivated land threatens the environment, food safety and the sustainabledevelopment of agriculture, the administration said.
Because of continual, too much use of chemical fertilizer, pesticide and agricultural plasticsheeting, as well as irrigation using polluted water,a large amount of contaminants〔污染物〕
remain in the cultivated land.
The contaminants affect the soil’s ecological structure and function, leading to decreasedsoil productivity, lower crop yield〔产量〕,and lower quality of agricultural products- It also leads to worse water quality in rural areas.
Less than 9 per cent of drinkable water passed checks for bacteria in243 rural water supply stations across the county.
Another survey, which took samples of drinking water and groundwater an 69 small towns。

in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province of North,China, showed that more than half of the water contains too much nitrate〔硝酸盐〕,which may cause diabetes〔糖尿病〕and damage the kidney.
The administration estimated at least 1 90 million farmers are drinking water that contains harmful substances.
Many villagers drink unfiltered water taken from shallow water wells or water cellars, which are reported to have poor sanitary conditions·

Stonehenge is the best known of a number of such ancient places in Britain. It stands on theflat, windy Salisbury Plain, heal‘the city of Sali sbury,England. Priscilla Ouchida’s“energy-efficient〞house turned out to be a horrible dream. When she and her engineer husband married a few years ago, they built a$1 00,000,three-bedroom homein California. Tightly sealed to prevent air leaks, the house was equipped with small double-pined 〔双层玻璃的〕windows and several other energy-saving features. Problems began as soon as the couple moved in,however. Priscilla’s eyes burned. Her throat was constantly dry. She suffered from headaches and could hardly sleep. It was as though she had suddenly developed a strange illness.
Experts finally traced the cause ofher illness. The level offormaldehyde〔甲醛〕gas in her kitchen was twice the maximum allowed by federal standards for chemical workers. The sourceofthe gas?Her new kitchen cabinets and wall-to-wall carpeting.
The Ouchidas are victims of indoor air pollution, which is not given sufficient attention partly because of the nation’s drive to save energy. The problem itself isn’t new. “The indoor environment was dirty long before energy conservation came along,〞says Moschandreas, apollution scientist at Geomet Technologies in Maryland. “Energy conservation has tended toaccentuate〔强调〕the situation in some cases. 〞
The problem appears to be more troublesome in newly constructed homes rather than old ones. Back in the days when energy was cheap, home builders didn’t worry much about unsealed cracks. Because of such leaks. the air in an average home was replaced by fresh outdoor air about once an hour. As a result, the pollutants generated in most households seldom build up todangerous levels.
52. It can be learned from the passage that the Ouchidas’house.

C. Gas leakage in the kitchen.
D. The newly painted walls.
54. Why were cracks in old houses not a big concern?
A. Because indoor cleanliness was not emphasized.
B. Because energy used to be inexpensive.
C. Because environmental protection was given top priority.
D. Because the,y were technically unavoidable.
55. This passage is most probably taken from an article entitled“. 〞.
A. Energy Conservation
B. HousesBuilding Crisis
C. Air Pollution Indoors
D. Traps in Building Construction
