Followingonemillionmiddle-agedwomeninBritainfor10years,astudyfindsthatthewidelyheldviewthathappinessenhanceshealthandlongevityisunfounded.
Theresultscomefromtheso-calledMillionWomenStudy,whichtookonwomenaged50to69from1996to2001,andtrackedthemwithquestionnairesandofficialrecordsofdeathsandhospitaladmissions.Thequestionna iresaskedhowoftenthewomenfelthappy,incontrol,relaxedandstressed,andalsoinstructedthemtoratetheirhealthandlistailmentslikehighbloodpressure,diabetes,depressionoranxiety.
Whentheanswerswereanalyzedstatistically,unhappinessandstresswerenotassociatedwithanincreasedriskofdeath.Itisnotclearwhethertheconclusio nappliestomen.

Theresultsofearlierstudieshavebeenmixed,withsomefindingthatunhappinesscausesillnessandothersshowingnolink,Dr.Fischhoffsaid.“Itlookstomelikepeoplehavecollectedalotofdatawithoutfindingaclearsignal,”h esaid.However,
aneditorialaccompanyingthestudyinTheLancetnotedthatithadthelargestpopulationsofarinhappinessst udiesandpraiseditsstatisticalmethods.
