Easy Care Houseplants for People Without a Green Thumb
It's not easy to admit that you have a black thumb. Forget to water? Leave the plant in direct sunlight for too long? It happens. Thankfully, there are plenty of hearty houseplants that can stand up to a caretaker who isn't as skilled as he or she may like to admit.
Here are five of our favorites, chosen for their different looks and easy care instructions.
1.Snake plant According to Better Homes & Gardens, the Snake plant can handle a neglectful
owner. While it grows well in low light, it does enjoy bright light, too. Tip: The surface soil
should dry out between waterings.
2.Madagascar dragon tree
According to This Old House, the Madagascar dragon tree is great in low light and can tolerate drying out between waterings — perfect for someone who may travel a lot for work. Tip: The stalks of this tree can be braced or twisted to create your own style.
3. Cast-iron plant Also known as Aspidistra elatior, this plant does well with little watering.
Tip: You can also plant the Cast-iron plant outside in little to full shade, according to Fine
Gardening.
4. Christmas cactus One of the prettiest houseplants, the Christmas cactus is a succulent(多汁
的)plant that blooms in the winter. Tip: This plant, amazingly, needs watering just twice a month, says Woman's Day.
5. Moth orchid While many may assume orchids are delicate plants, the Moth orchid is
relatively easy to care for, according to Southern Living. Place in filtered(过滤过的)light and allow soil to dry out between waterings. Tip: Make sure the plant's pot drains well.

Helsinki is offering young people the chance to rent a cheap apartment in an old people’s home,if they agree to spend time socializing with the elderly residents.
The city council is seeking applications from renters under the age of 25 who will commit to spending between three and five hours each week with their older neighbours,at a care home in the eastern Laajasalo district. In exchange, they’ll get a studio flat measuring 23 square meters with a private kitchen, bathroom and balcony for 250 euros per month.
Currently only three flats are available.but the scheme is part of a wider effort to deal with a lack of accommodation for young people in the capital.Ordinarily a studio costs about 600 euros a month, depending on the area, one local university advises.
Those who apply don’t need any specific care experience.“There are staff to look after the elderly,”project manager Miki Mielonen tells Yle.“We are looking for young people who maybe have a different perspective on everyday life, who will bring variety and recreation to the elderly residents.”
More than 60 people have applied for the space in less than a week, and the idea has also been widely recognized by Finns on social media.“Great project, hopefully it will spread to other areas,” writes one person on Facebook, while another applauds the scheme for bringing different generations together.
But some wish it were open to more people, with one user saying:“It's a shame the flats are so small. It would have been nice if the elderly had a small family with children or a single parent as their neighbour.”And one person has a different opinion about the cut-off age, writing:“Shame I'm too old for this—I would have surely applied.”
24.One can probably get the cheap apartment if he_______.
A.reaches the age of 25 B.has financial problems

More than 10 years ago, it was difficult to buy a tasty pineapple (菠萝). The fruits that made it to the UK were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard with an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1966, the Del Monte Gold pineapple produced in Hawaii first hit our shelves.
The new type of pineapple looked more yellowy-gold than green. It was slightly softer on the outside and had a lot of juice inside. But the most important thing about this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the hit-and-miss pineapples we had known. In no time, the Del Monte Gold took the market by storm, rapidly becoming the world's best-selling pineapple variety, and delivering natural levels of sweetness in the mouth, up until then only found in tinned pineapple.
In nutrition (养分) it was all good news too. This nice tasting pineapple contained four times more vitamin C (维生素C) than the old green variety. Nutritionists said that it was not only full of vitamins, but also good against some diseases. People were understandably eager to be able to buy this wonderful fruit. The new type of pineapple was selling fast, and the Del Monte Gold pineapple rapidly became a fixture in the shopping basket of the healthy eater.
Seeing the growing market for its winning pineapple, Del Monte tried to keep market to itself. But other fruit companies developed similar pineapples. Del Monte turned to law for help, but failed. Those companies argued successfully that Del Monte's attempts to keep the golden pineapple for itself were just a way to knock them out the market.
28. We learn from the text that the new type of pineapple is __________.
A. green outside and sweet inside
B. good-looking outside and soft inside
C. yellowy-gold outside and hard inside
D. a little soft outside and sweet inside
29. The underlined word “fixture” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to something ________.
A. that people enjoy eating
B. that is always present
C. that is difficult to get
D. that people use as a gift
30. We can learn from the last paragraph that Del Monte _________.
A. allowed other companies to develop pineapples
B. succeeded in keeping the pineapple for itself
C. tried hard to control the pineapple market
D. planned to help the other companies

I love charity (慈善) shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won’t find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.
The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity’s appeal to aid postwar
Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations (捐赠物). They decided to set up a
答案21-23 DDA 24-27 CACA 28-30 D B C 31-33 C D C shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity
shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always
find children’s books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a
manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every
morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don’t encourage
this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more
than £110 million a year, funding(资助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor
children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money?
You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good
cause and tread lightly on the environment.
31. The author loves the charity shop mainly because of _______.
A. its convenient location
B. its great variety of goods
C. its spirit of goodwill
D. its nice shopping environment
32. The first charity shop in the UK was set up to _______.
A. sell cheap products
B. deal with unwanted things
C. raise money for patients
D. help a foreign country
33. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A. What to Buy a Charity Shops.
B. Charity Shop: Its Origin & Development.
C. Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate.
D. The Public’s Concern about Charity Shops.。
