It was a very hot day in late summer. I was a young dad working in a local wood mill. It was dangerous, back-breaking work that paid very little. In the year I had worked there only four other people hadn't quit and been replaced with new faces. Those of us who stayed did so only because there was no other work to find to support our families.
On this day the fans weren't working and all of us were covered in sweat and sawdust. When I looked around every face I saw looked angry and frustrated. Suddenly, a voice called out: “Hey! There's a deer in here.” A lost little doe had wandered through the open loading bay doors and was now cowering(蜷缩)in between the huge stacks of wood. All of us stopped working and went looking for her as she ran about looking for a way out.
Now most people where I live hunt deer for meat in the fall, but also treat them with great kindness the rest of the year. Many will even buy 50lb bags of corn to help feed them during the harsh winter months. It was no surprise then that all of us were soon quickly working together to free this little doe. By blocking off all the other routes we were able to guide her panic search back to the open bay doors. We watched as she jumped out of the building and back into the woods. Then we walked back in to work. I noticed something, though. On every face there was a joyful smile. It was as if this one single act of kindness had energized us again and reminded us of what life is all about.
4. Why were few people willing to work in the wood mill?
A. They wanted more freedom.
B. They didn't like the boss.
C. The pay and conditions were bad.
D. They wanted more pleasure.
5. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. The workers often saw a deer there.
B. The deer was a light to the dull work.
C. The deer was trapped in a big well.
D. All the workers wanted to catch the deer.
6. How did the men free the deer in the end?
A. By opening one route.
B. By dropping some food.
C. By using familiar signals.
D. By imitating another deer.
7.Which of the following best describes the workers?
A. Bad-tempered but patient.
B. Hard-working and loving.
C. Cautious and courageous.
D. Bad-tempered and demanding.

In spring, chickens start laying again, bringing a welcome source of protein at winter’s end. So it’s no surprise that cultures around the world celebrate spring by honoring the egg.
Some traditions are simple, like the red eggs that get baked into Greek Easter breads.
by the Russians starting in the 19th century.
One ancient form of egg art comes to us from Ukraine. For centuries, Ukrainians have been drawing complicated patterns on eggs. Contemporary artists have followed this tradition to create eggs that speak to the anxieties of our age: Life is precious, and delicate. Eggs are, too.
“There’s something about their delicate nature that appeals to me,” says New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast. Several years ago, she became interested in eggs and learned the traditional Ukrainian technique to draw her very modern characters. “I’ve broken eggs at every stage of the process —from the very beginning to the very, very end.”
But there’s an appeal in that vulnerability(易损性). “There’s part of this sickening horror
of knowing you’re walking on the edge with this, that I kind of like, knowing that it could all fall apart at any second.” Chast’s designs, such as a worried man alone in a tiny rowboat, reflect that delicateness.
Traditional Ukrainian decorated eggs also spoke to those fears. The elaborate patterns were believed to offer protection against evil.
“There’s an ancient legend that as long as these eggs are made, evil will not exist in the world.” says Joan Brander, a Canadian egg-painter who has been painting eggs for over 60 years, having learned the art from her Ukrainian relatives.
8. People in many cultures honor the egg because _______________.
A. it is their major source of protein in winter
B. it is a welcome sign of the approach of spring
C. it can bring wealth and honor to them
D. it can easily be made into a work of art
9. What do es the underlined word “elevate” in Paragraph 2 mean ?
A. carve
B. promote
C. place
D. lower
10. Why does Chast enjoy the process of decorating eggs?
A. She is never sure what the final design will look like until the end.
B. She always achieves great pleasure from designing something new.
C. She never knows if the egg will break before the design is completed.
D. She believes there won’t be evil in the world once the egg is made.
11. The following statements are right except that _______________.
A. the decorated “eggs” are favored as a form of fancy art in Russia
B. contemporary artists draw on eggs to reflect anxieties of people today
C. the delicate nature of eggs appeals to Roz Chast
D. eggs provide a hard and unique surface to paint on

Amazon wants to be able to answer the troublesome question: Did I leave the stove on? The latest home security tool by Ring, a home security company owned by Amazon, is the Always Home Cam, a flying drone that can help homeowners check their apartments whenever they’re not in.
The Always Home Cam is a lightweight, self-docking, flying indoor camera that can take a predetermined path set by its user. When used with Ring’s proprietary home alarms systems like the Ring Alarm, the Always Home Cam will take flight and check the house for any potential disturbances. The drone unit can also be controlled remotely and manually. After a flight, the Always Home Cam automatically returns to its station itself for charging. It only records while in flight, too.
You can ask it to fly to check the stove while you’re out, or to see if you left the windows open. It’s also great for checking on naughty pets. The drone has obstacle avoidance technology built-in, and hidden propellers(螺旋桨) to mitigate any damage to household furnishing in the event of a collision. Amazon says the drone will automatically take flight if there’s movement in the house to show you wha t’s going on.
The device was one of several that Amazon unveiled Thursday as part of its annual appliance event. Due to the pandemic, this yea r’s version was held online instead of at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters.
The indoor flying camera, called the Ring Always Home Cam, still needs approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, but Amazon said it expects to sell it next year at $250. It will also launch a camera and alarm system for cars next year under its Ring brand.
Critics have raised privacy concerns about Ring, which is best known for its doorbell cameras, citing the compan y’s close relationship with police departments. Amazon said the drone only records when it is in the air, and that it makes a sound when it flies so any people in the house knows its recording.
12. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Amazon’s camera can check whether your stove is on.
B. New devices were unveiled on Amazon’ annual appliance event.
C. Critics raised privacy concerns about the Always Home Cam.
D. The Always Home Cam can ensure your safety.
13. What can the Always Home Cam do?
A. It can take a path set by computer.
B. It can record when you are out.
C. It can get charged by itself.
D. It can take flight at any time.
14. What do we know about the Always Home Cam?
A. It was unveiled at Amazon's Seattle headquarters.
B. It will be sold at a sound price of $250 next year.
C. It can lessen damage to furniture for its obstacle avoidance technology.
D. It records in the air, not found by anyone.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the Always Home Cam?
A. favorable
B. critical
C. doubtful

Do you always concern yourself with your kid’s play dates? Do you send them upstairs to get changed? ____16____ Put that red pen back in your purse, because micromanaging your kids is likely to do more harm than good.
Micromanaging or over-parenting comes in many forms. However it presents itself, it can give children the impression that parents don’t have confidence in them, and this can lead to problems. Kids who are micromanaged could also grow used to an unearned level of success, which may do harm to their attitude towards work and life. Parents who micromanage their kids sometimes struggle with a sense of control. ____17____
So what should parents do? For modern parents, it can be a balance between healthy
involvement in your kid's life and micromanaging. It can be especially difficult to know where the line is when it comes to the internet. We live in a digital age. ____18____ To help you walk that fine line, parents should be frank about it. If they're hiding their phone or acting secretively, a slightly different conversation about the health of their online activity might be needed.
Breaking a micromanaging habit isn't easy. ____19____ You could relax your grip in fairly inconsequential areas, like letting your child decide what clothes to wear. The plus side is that if you back off about little things, your words might carry more weight when it comes to the big things. ____20____ Therefore, you can let your children succeed, fail, and figure out life on their own.
A. But like any bad habit, start small.
B. Do you stay with them while they're doing homework?
C. Keep your eyes open for the changes in your kids' behavior.
D. Do you like talking with your kids?
E. You can also form a healthier relationship with your kids.

G. It's important for parents to care about their kids' activity online.

"Once there was a ship travelling on the tough sea and on the ship there was a pair of couple. All of a sudden, the ship met with an accident and the couple had no choice but to run to the life boat without delay. After reaching there, they realized that there was space only for one person. At that very moment, the husband pushed his wife behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself, leaving his wife standing on the sinking ship, shouting something desperately to her husband, eyes filled with tears."
The teacher stopped her story-telling and asked her students, "Guys, guess what it was that she shouted."
Most students answered. "I hate you!"
After listening to all this reply, the teacher glanced through the whole class again and noticed that there was a boy sitting silently throughout. Then she asked him the same question.
The boy answered, "I believe she would have shouted-Take care of our child."
Listening to his remarks, the teacher was surprised and asked the boy doubtfully, "Have you heard of this story before?"
Shaking his head, the boy said softly and sadly, "No,I haven't. But that's what my mother said to my father before she died of a deadly disease."
Moved and feeling sad, the teacher replied, "Your answer is absolutely right!"
Then she continued, "Let's take up the story. The ship sank eventually and the husband went home and brought up their daughter alone. Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter was tidying up all his belongings when she found his diary. In his diary she found that when her parents were on the ship. her mother had already been diagnosed(诊断) with advanced illness and at the critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival."

Student Council 读后续写:
In his diary, the man mentioned he wished to sink to the ocean with his wife but for their daughter he had to live. Without him, their baby daughter would become an orphan. After drowning himself in sorrow for a short time, he uplifted himself and learned how to raise a baby. Whenever faced with hardships, he would inspire himself with his wife words-- “take care of our child.” Seeing the little girl grow into a sunny, pretty girl with double love from both parents, the man knew he made it to keep his promise.
The story was finished and the class was silent.Nobody talked or laughed as usual. Instead, it seemed that every student was lost in deep thought, tasting the moving story. The teacher was sure that the students were reflecting on their replies and that they had understood the moral of the story. Of the Good and Evil in the world, there are hidden secrets behind them.
So we should not really focus on the surface and judge anyone without understanding them first. Put yourself in other’s shoes.。
