Wood-like waste is recycled into charcoal (木炭),for example, which can be used to supersede firewood and reduce the number of trees that are cut down for firewood. Food waste is recycled into compost(混合肥料)to function as environmentally friendly fertilizers and plastic is turned into many useful things.
Supported by WasteAid UK and the Gambia Women’s Initiative (GWI), among others, the project provides women with skills they can use to become self-sufficient (自给自足的). Women learning at the center come from five communities, and some of them travel as far as 12 miles to learn these important skills that will provide them with an income, according to The Guardian.
Isatou Ceesay, who now leads the GWI,highlighted the need to focus on economic equality in her country, telling The Guardian, “In terms of education, women are the ones who are always behind. Bo ys are chosen to go to school. When we conduct our training, we find women can do a lot,but don’t know who they are, or how to implement (实施)things. ”
According to the World Health Organization’s Country Cooperation Strategy 2008—2013 report, the main environmental issue facing Gambia is poor waste management in urban areas.

22.(8分)Bike sharing have become popular words in cities from Cape Town to Shanghai to Melbourne. Planners, politicians and media keep showing off their benefits: reducing pollution, congestion, travel costs and oil dependence, while improving public health. Bike sharing also helps make cities appear modern, dynamic and world-wide—qualities much sought after by the creative class.
But what makes for a successful public bike-sharing program? This is an important question because installing one requires significant public and private investment and adjustment to the built environment.
While many programs have been launched among much praise, often their popularity has soon declined. Many end up operating at a financial loss and depend on other profitable enterprises to cross-subsidize(交叉补贴) them. Some have resulted in thrown-away bikes becoming an eyesore.
Understanding which factors enhance or stop public bike sharing is critical in helping cities decide whether such a program is workable, before considering what design and sitting will work best.
Drawing on current knowledge, we discuss the importance of the local landscape, climate, cycling infrastructure (基础设施) and land use. We also touch on other factors, such as the legal environment and the characteristics of the
bike-sharing program itself.
Take natural environment for example. Two natural environment factors are known to affect participation: hilliness and weather. Hilliness discourages balanced bike-sharing use, as users avoid returning bicycles to stations on hilltops. Those stations end up being empty, while stations on flat areas are often full, so users cannot find a station to return their bikes.
As for weather, ideal temperature ranges vary by the climate zone. Case studies show warm and dry weather encourages public bike-sharing use. Rain and strong wind reduce the frequency of trips. However, some approaches, such as providing sheltered, shaded, or even heated or cooled cycling infrastructure, could prove useful.
1、What can we infer about bike sharing from Paragraph 1?
A.It has no disadvantage. B.It is welcomed worldwide.
C.It can solve every problem. D.It is the symbol of modern cities.
2、What is the current situation of bike-sharing programs?
A.Many of them run at a loss. B.Most of them make huge profits.
C.They are the most promising business. D.Their development is determined by public investment.
3、Why does the author mention the natural environment?
A.To show user’s interest in various natural environment.
B.To show the decisive function of natural environment.
C.To show the necessity of bike-sharing programs.
D.To show the significance of some factors.
4、Which of the following might increase bike-sharing use?
A.Hilliness. B.Attractive bikes.
C.Rain and strong wind. D.Perfect cycling infrastructure.
23.(8分)The latest addition to the Gtech garden power tools is a lightweight but powerful wireless Leaf Blower(吹落叶机). This autumn it will make the time of clearing leaves and garden pieces very short.
High performance
The 36V Lithium-ion Gtech Leaf Blower has the ability to clear pieces from your lawn, courtyard and driveway. The Leaf Blower uses a turbofan(涡轮风扇发动机) design that allows for a straight air passage from intake to outlet, offering maximum airflow and efficiency that turn the fan at 11,500 times a minute.

When in use, it will naturally point towards the ground to direct the airflow. Therefore, you won’t have to worry about injuring your wrists, even if you use it for an entire 20-minute run-time with full power. The variable trigger(扳机) allows for complete control –when you squeeze or release the trigger you will feel the airflow change to suit your garden needs.
Easy to use
The Gtech Leaf Blower is easy to use. There is no need to pull wires or top it up with fuel, so simply attach the battery and pull the trigger to start. The product’s wireless convenience means there are no wires to trip you up or limit your access, and no petrol to store up or pour—simply charge it and it’s ready to go. 24.(8分)A European Union program is letting blind people experience famous paintings for the first time. It uses three dimensional (3-D) printing to re-create famous paintings so they can be touched.
One painting printed with the new technology is Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss.” It is a popular attraction at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria. The painting shows a man and a woman standing in a field filled with flowers. They are wearing gold robes and have their arms around each other. The man leans down to kiss the woman.
Klimt finished the painting in 1908. Until now, people who had trouble seeing could not appreciate the artwork. But thanks to the reproduction they can touch the piece and feel the ridges and depressions. Andreas Reichinger started making 3-D versions of artwork in 2010. He said this reproduction was his most difficult project because the couple’s robes are so detailed.
Dominika Raditsch is a blind museum visitor. She touched the reproduction. As she moved her hands around it she said, ”Exactly, can you see these? There are so many details.“ Raditsch said she can imagine what the original painting looks like when she touches the reproduction. “It’s somehow round. You can feel it. It comes with it. And in many places it’s so smooth. And then I think to myself: it probably shines too!” Raditsch said.
The Belvedere is not the only museum to have 3-D versions of its artwork. Some of the pieces at the Prado, in
Madrid, Spain, have reproductions that can be touched. But the piece in Vienna has one special part: it is made with widely available 3-D printing technology. That means one day, blind art fans anywhere in the world could download the source files and print the reproductions themselves.
1、What is ”The kiss”?
A.A European Union project. B.A popular painting.
C.A 3-D technology. D.A famous museum.
2、Why did Reichinger say this reproduction was difficult to finish?
A.The painting was reproduced detailedly.
B.The original artwork was made in 1908.
C.Blind art fans can’t download the source.
D.The 3-D technology is not available.
3、How did Raditsch feel when she first touched the reproduction?
A.Awkward. B.Puzzled.
C.Excited. D.Nervous.
4、What is the best title for the text?
A.A European Union Program for Museum Visitors
B.3-D Printing Lets Blind Experience Famous Painting
C.How to Reproduce the World-famous Paintings
D.A Special Museum for Art Fans in Vienna, Austria
25.(10分)If you have ever had a cat, or have watch ed one of the many funny cat videos online, you’ll know that cats have a mind of their own. A lot of the things they do are hard to understand---they like to climb up tall furniture, fit themselves in small spaces and attack small objects for no reason at all.
Now scientists have managed to figure out what exactly is going on in the brains of our little friends. According to Tony Buffington, a professor at Ohio State University in the US, cats’ strange behavior largely comes from their way of life back in t he wild. “Cats today still have many of the same instincts(本能)that allowed them to live in the wild for millions of years.” he said in a TED Talk. “To them, our homes are their jungles.”
In the wild, cats are hunters. Their bodies and great balancing abilities allow them to climb to high spots to better look at the environment. Even though they don’t have to hunt any more in human houses, they still keep the old habit of viewing the living room from, for example, the top of the refrigerator.
Cats’ hunting i nstinct is also what makes them attack small things like keys and USB drives. In the wild, they hunt whatever they can get, and most of the animals they kill are small.
However, cats can also be prey. This explains why they like to stay in small spaces like drawers or washing machines---they are hiding, or they think they are hiding, from more dangerous animals. This is also why cats prefer a clean box: a smelly one could easily show enemies where they are.
Knowing how cats’ minds work is not only useful for better understanding them. It may also help cats’ owners to better meet cats’ needs. For example, owners could try to make climbing easier for cats by moving their furniture around. They could also use “food puzzles” to make eating feel more like hunting instead of just giving food to the cats.
1、According to Tony Buffington, ________.
A.cats’ strange behavior is hard for people to understand
B.cats are more used to living in the wild than in humans’ homes
C.cats behave strangely mainly because of some instincts in the wild
D.cats’ instincts are as helpful to them today as they were millions of year ago
2、Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A.Cats like to climb up high because they want to hide from dangerous animals
B.Cats attack keys and USB drives because they have a habit of hunting small animals
C.Cats enjoy staying in small spaces because they usually live in small caves in the wild
D.Cats’ preference for a clean box probably has something to do with their hunting instinct s
3、The underlined word “prey” in Paragraph 5 probably means _________.
A.an animal that is too lazy
B.an animal that likes hiding games
C.an animal that keeps itself clean
D.an animal that is hunted
4、This article is mainly written to _________.
A.explore the reasons behind cats’ strange behavior
B.describe cats’ past wild experience to readers
C.tell cat owners how to make life easier for cats
D.compare cats’ behavior in human homes with that in the wild

25、THIS is an adapted excerpt(摘录)from Eman Mohammed’s speech at TED (Technology, Entertainm ent and Design), a non-profit conference, in 2014. She is one of the few female photo journalists in the Gaza Strip(加沙地带).
When I was 19, I started my career as the first female photojournalist in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. My work as a woman photographer was considered a serious insult(侮辱)to local traditions. The male-dominated profession made me feel unwelcome by all possible means. They made it clear that a woman must not do a man’s job. Photo agencies in Gaza refused to train me.
Three of my colleagues went as far as to drive me to an open air strike area where explosions were the only thing I could hear. Dust was flying in the air, and the ground was shaking beneath me. I only realized we weren’t there to document the event when the three of them got back into the armored(装甲的)Jeep and drove away, waving and laughing. Leaving me behind in the open air strike zone.
For a moment, I felt terrified, humiliated, and sorry for myself.
I started paying closer attention to women’s lives in Gaza. Because I am a wo man, I could go where my colleagues were forbidden to go. Beyond the obvious pain and struggle, there were healthy amounts of laughter and accomplishments.
In front of a police compound in Gaza City during the first war in Gaza, an Israeli air raid(袭击)destroyed the compound and broke my nose. For a moment, all I saw was bright white. I thought I had either gone blind or I was in heaven. By the time I managed to open my eyes, I had documented this moment.
Mohammed Khader is a Palestinian worker who spent two decades in Israel. As his retirement plan, he decided to build a four-floor house. By just the first field operation(军事行动)in his neighborhood, the house had been flattened. Nothing was left but the pigeons he raised and a bathtub. Mohammed put the bathtub on the top of the rubble(瓦砾)and started giving his kids a bobble bath every morning.
My work is not meant to hide the scars of war, but to show the full unseen stories of Gazans. As a Palestinian female photographer, the journey of struggle, survival and everyday life has inspired me to overcome the community taboo(禁忌)and see a different side of war and its aftermath(灾祸). I became a witness with a choice: to run away or stand still.
