Years ago, my wife and I volunteered at a homeless shelter in downtown Los Angeles, US, preparing meals for thousands of people. I got to talk with one of them in line, Albert. He said he liked my socks. “Want to see mine?〞 he asked, lifting his leg. He was barefoot (赤脚的).He said he had been meaning to buy a pair but he hadn't got around to it. I felt a sinking (沉重的) feeling in my stomach.
The next day, after work I stopped at Ross and filled up my car with socks. That next morning, I drove over to Santa Monica's Palisades Park, which is a common place for homeless people.
I took one of the bags from my car. It was still dark out. I headed for a group of three men, standing around a tree, probably using it as a wind breaker. As I walked toward them, one of them watched me, perhaps questioning my motives (动机). “I thought you all might need some fresh new socks,〞 I said, handing him a pair. He looked confused at first but took them and said, “Thank you." I gave him two more
pairs for his friends.
I moved on. An hour later, I had given out all the socks. Most people were sleeping, and I felt like Santa. I knew that when they woke up they would find a very meaningful present.
That was nine years ago. Every week I'll hand out as many socks as I can. If I'm on vacation or on a business trip for more than a week, I bring a bag of socks with me and hand them out to the homeless on the streets in other states and countries.
It's extremely satisfying to do "under the radar" things to help make some people's lives a little bit easier. Part of me hopes to see Albert out there one of these days, but even if I don't, I'd like to think one of the pairs will find him.
4. What caused the author to hand out socks to the homeless?
A. A homeless shelter's request.
B. His wife's volunteer work.
C. His talk with Albert.
D. A festival's arrival.
5. How did the homeless man in the park react to the author's help?
A. He wondered about the reason behind it.
B. He expected to get more socks.
C. He refused to accept it.
D. He was afraid of it.
6. What does the underlined phrase "under the radar〞 in the last paragraph probably
mean?
A. Common.
B. Surprising.
C. Undiscovered.
D. Unbelievable.
7. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Spreading presents on trips
B. Looking for Albert all over the world
C. Giving the homeless a lifetime surprise
D. Helping the homeless in an unexpected way

Gianina Rojas, 26, lives in Lima, Peru. She grew up in a small house next to an ancient pyramid (金字塔), which was built by the Inca people more than 600 years ago, and a group of buildings, which were built more than 2,100 years ago. The Inca ruled South America before the Spanish took control in 1532. They built one of the richest and largest empires in the Americas. The Inca left behind huge buildings, treasure, artworks, and more.
Many people in Peru have grown up near historic sites, known as "huacas". There are about 46,000 huacas in Peru. About 400 are in the capital city of Lima. No other city in South America has more. But Peru spends only enough money to protect 1 percent of those sites. Many are left to fall into ruins. Others become public trash dumps (垃圾场). Protected sites are still affected by modern city life. High-rise apartment buildings stand over one site.
One well-kept pyramid is right across from the president's home. In the 1980s, Lima went through a growth cycle. Many historic sites were ruined to make room for homes.
A small group of officials and experts is trying to stop the loss of huacas. But it is a difficult job. One big problem is that many Peruvians don't care about the sites.
“There has been no relationship between the people and the huacas,〞 said expert Hector Walde. Jorge Arrunategui, who studies history for Peru's government, started an effort last summer to let people know about the importance of huacas. People can get free tickets to the country's museums and to lots of ancient sites.
Rojas and her mother promised to care for the buildings and pyramid near their home, which has been challenging. Rojas once found a dead body dumped at the site. "Most people do not know how dangerous it is to care for a huaca," Rojas said. "You have to face many bad people. The worst part is that the state never recognizes or thanks you."
8. What do we know about huacas?
A. They are common in Lima.
B. They were found by the Inca.
C. They are the largest buildings in Lima.
D. They were mostly built by the Spanish.
9. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Lima is a fast-growing city.
B. Many huacas have turned Peruvians' homes.
C. A large number of huacas have been destroyed.
D. Peru has taken tough measures to protect huacas.
10.What did Jorge Arrunategui make an effort to do in Peru?
A. Enrich Peruvians' spiritual life.
B. Deepen Peruvians' understanding of huacas.
C. Improve the quality of basic public services.
D. Popularize scientific knowledge among Peruvians.
11.What do Rojas' words in the last paragraph mean?
A. It is easy to care for various huacas.
B. People's contribution to huacas should be valued.
C. People should take responsibility to protect huacas.
D. The state must put much money into building huacas.

In the past five years, Instagram has taken off faster than anyone would have ever expected. It has become more than just a social media (社交媒体); it has become a community. Within this community of over 800 million people, there are two obvious groups when it comes to diet culture and weight-loss programs.
I have run a blog about this for over two years, and I have experience of both of these groups. I have followed accounts of people strictly counting their calories (卡路里), and observing their food habits.
On the other side of this are people who support intuitive eating, who make sure they remind people that their weight is the least of their worries. They try to tell people that food is fuel, rather than something that will make them lose or gain weight. This group on Instagram helps people suffering from eating disorders,
rather than fueling them.
The rise of Instagram has also led to the rise of what we call "Instagram models." These people have a lot of fans and a very beautiful image on Instagram. This isn't a bad thing. Humans are attracted to attractive people. Where this does go wrong however is when people running weight-loss programs, selling weight-loss products, and other people supporting different types of diets get into contact with these people and offer to pay them to get their message across.
We also run into issues (问题) with what the public think of these models' bodies. Not only is it bad for the self-esteem (自尊) of the people viewing the account, but also for the mental health of the person running the Instagram account.
The people that promote (推销) these weight-loss products are usually attractive, and have what we would consider “the perfect body〞 and the products are almost always diet related in some way. This enforces the idea in the consumers' mind that in order to reach this perfect body type you must use this product.
12. What has the author's blog focused on for over two years?
A. Food culture.
B. Food and lifestyle.
C. Eating disorders.
D. Exercise and food.
13.What does the underlined part “intui tive eating" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Eating food when you' re hungry.
B. Eating enough food at a time.
C. Eating healthy food.
D. Eating strictly.
14. What problem does the author think Instagram models have?
A. They mislead other people.
B. They suffer from mental diseases.
C. They care too much about their bodies.
D. They show no interest in health.
15. How does the author sound in the last two paragraphs?
A. Joking.
B. Praising.
C. Disagreeing.
D. Understanding.
第二节 (一共5小题;每一小题3分,满分是15分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项里面选出能填入空白处的最正确选项。
选项里面有两项为多余选项。
Skateboarding began in the late 1950s on the West Coast of America, where a group of bored Californian surfers tried putting a surfboard on roller skate (旱冰鞋) wheels.
__16__ It was a sport just being born and discovered, so anything went. The main problem was their steel wheels, which made the skateboard shake. The steel wheels were soon replaced by ones made of baked clay, which were hard to control. Eventually in the early 1970s the smooth urethane plastic (聚氨酯塑料) was put to use. __17__
The board shape stayed similar to the miniature wooden surfboard that it was modelled on. These ‘old school’ boards were made from wood, plastic or even metal. The introduction of the kicktail —an upturned back end —in the late 1960s allowed new tricks to be invented. __18__ Most modern boards are made from maple wood and have both a kicktail and an upturned nose.
The two main types of skateboarding are street and ramp. Street skating is skateboarding using urban obstacles (障碍) such as kerbs, stairs and handrails. __19__ However, many skateparks have street courses that copy the urban landscape. Skateparks offer a safe place to practise and can introduce you to ramp skating. These are also known as halfpipes, and are shaped like a letter 'U'.
Once you've stepped on a skateboard you’ll understand why so many people love it. __20__ As you begin to perfect tricks you will become more and more addicted to this fun pastime.
A. Skateboarding faced its first crash in popularity.
B. This can be dangerous and is banned in some cities.
C. It was taken from being a hobby to something serious.
D. It holds many challenges and is constantly fun and exciting.
E. The earliest skateboards were very dangerous forms of transport.
F. There were many changes in board shape throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
G. During this time, skateboarding was seen as something to do for fun after
surfing.
