T o Jane’s delight, Mrs. Reed concurs.Once at the Lowood School, Jane finds that her life is far from idyllic. The school’s headmaster is Mr. Brocklehurst, a cruel, hypocritical, and abusive man. He surprises her one day by declaring that her uncle, John Eyre, has died and left her a large fortune: 20,000 pounds. When Jane asks how he received this news, he shocks her further by declaring that her uncle was also his uncle: Jane and the Riverses are cousins. Jane immediately decides to share her inheritance equally with her three newfound relatives.St. John decides to travel to India as a missionary, and he urges Jane to accompany him—as his wife. Jane agrees to go to India but refuses to marry her cousin because she does not love him. St. John pressures her to reconsider, and she nearly gives in. However, she realizes that she cannot abandon forever the man she truly loves when one night she hears Rochester’s voice calling her name over the moors. 夏洛蒂.勃朗特《简·爱》的作者出生于1816年英国约克郡索恩托镇的牧师家庭，排行第三，前面有两个姐姐，后面有两个妹妹和一个弟弟。
姐弟妹共6个。
由于自小失去母亲，父亲因为经济与精力两不俱足，便不得不把夏洛蒂和她的两个姐姐及弟弟，送进由慈善机构创办的寄宿学校。
那里的环境和生活条件很差，加上创办人苛刻的管束和严厉的处罚，冻饿和体罚便
成了孩子们惯常的生活。
不久，肺病夺去了两个姐姐的生命，父亲赶紧让夏洛蒂和弟弟逃离死亡的魔窟，返回家中。
1831年夏洛蒂进入罗赫德寄宿学校，这里的情况截然不同，夏洛蒂不但学业上很有长进，而且日子也过得十分愉快。
虽然只呆了一年零四个月，但这儿温馨的生活给她留下了难忘的印象。
后来夏洛蒂在1835年返回罗赫德任教，两个妹妹跟随读书，抵去部分酬金，三年后离去。

她们姐妹三人经常在聚在一起，如饥如渴的读书，绘画和写作。
