作品:Mammon and the Archer
Theme:It’s a short story written by O·Henry, which surrounds the clue—“what can’t money buy?” Its plot is that a rich and retired manufacturer named Anthony Rockwall held the view that there were nothi ng that money can’t accomplish, while his son called Richard and sister had the different viewpoint that there were “the something” that money can’t buy, for example LOVE. However, it was Anthony’s money that made Richard have the time to ask for Miss Landry’s Love, which was suppose to not have enough time to do so. Briefly, money is not almighty, but without money, we can not do many things in this materialism society.

A:Tell my son to come in here before he leaves the house.

A:(Laid aside his newspaper ,looked at his son ,kindly grimness)(一只手把自己的头发弄的乱糟糟的,一只手把口袋里的钥匙弄的吱吱响)Richard. what do you pay for soap you use ?
R :Six dollars a dozen, I think, Dad.
A:And your clothes?
R :Sixty dollars, as a rule.
A:You are gentleman. You spent so much on soap all because you have money. Money can do anything.
R :There is something that money can not accomplish. (Gloomy)
A:Now, don’t say that to shock me. I bet money can do anything. I have been throwing the encyclopedia down for looking for something that money will not buy, but have found none.
R :(Ranking a little)For one thing, it will not buy-- love .
A:That is why I ask you to come in .There is something wrong with you, boy .I have noticed you for two weeks.
R :Not a bad guess, dad .
A:Ah, what is her name?
R :(Began to walk up and down the library floor.)
A:Why do not you ask her? You have got the money and the looks, and you are a decent boy .She will jump at you.
R :I have not a chance.
A: “Make one”. Take her for a walk in the park, or go for a picnic, or walk with her from church.
Chance !pshaw!
R :You do not know the social mill, every hour and minute of her is arranged for days in advance.
I must have that girl, dad, or I will die.
A:Do you mean with all the money I have got you cannot get an hour or two of a girl’s time for yourself?
R :I have put it off too late .She is going to sail for Europe for a two years’ study. Your money can not buy even a second for me.
A:All right, my boy. It is not a problem .Go to have a rest (Richard left)
(Aunt Ellen came; Anthony was at his evening paper)
A:He told me all about it, and said money could not help him.
E:Oh, Anthony. I wish you would not think so much of money. Love is all-powerful. All your money cannot bring happiness to your son.

L:We will meet in one day.
R:If only time stop here now.
L:You are kidding.
R:Oh, sorry, I have dropped a ring. It was my mother’s; I’d hate to lose it.
(Richard got down the cab to look for his ring.)
(At this moment, a heavy traffic jam happened. But within that minute a cross-town car had stopped directly in front of the cab. The cabman tried to pass to the left, but a heavy express wagon curt him off .He tried the right, and had to back away from furniture ...)
L:Why do not you drive on? We will be late. (Impatiently)
R:I am sorry. It looks as if we are stuck. Maybe we will stay here for hours. It was my fault. If I had not dropped the ring, we... (He stood up and looked around.)
L:Let me see the ring. Now that it cannot be helped, I don’t care .(Appreciated it)
R:Do you like it?
L:Yes , it’s really nice .
R:Really ? Wonderful, please keep it.
L:Can I? But it is your mothers.
R:Yes, you can .You are just the person .My mother asked me to give it to the one who I loved. L:(Her face turned red)

E:Ok, good night .

A:Come in .
K:The traffic jam was not bad ,isn’t it?
A:Well, let’s see—I gave you 5,000 in cash before the jam.
K:I paid out 300 more of my own. (He took out a power and looked at) I had to go …But it didn’t work beautiful, sir?
A:Thirteen hundred ----here you are, Kelly. (Anthony tore off a check) You have five thousand, and the 300 of your own. One thousand is for your service. You don’t despise money, do you, Kelly?
K:Me? I can lick the man that invented money.
(Anthony called Kelly when he was at the door.)
A:You didn’t notice, anywhere in the uptown, a kind of a fat boy without any clothes shooting arrows around with a bow ,did you?
K:Why, no, I didn’t, If he was like what you say, maybe the cops pinched him before I got there. A:I thought the littl e rascal wouldn’t be on hand, Good-by, Kelly.。
