What is Global Warming? Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth’s average surface temperature over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases released as people burn fossil fuels. The global average surface temperature rose 0.6 to 0.9 degrees Celsius (1.1 to 1.6° F) between 1906 and 2005, and the rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled in the last 50 years. Temperatures are certain to go up further. Earth’s natural greenhouse effect Earth’s temperature begins with the Sun. Roughly 30 percent of incoming sunlight is reflected back into space by bright surfaces like clouds and ice. Of the remaining 70 percent, most is absorbed by the land and ocean, and the rest is absorbed by the atmosphere. The absorbed solar energy heats our planet. As the rocks, the air, and the seas warm, they radiate “heat” energy (thermal infrared radiation). From the surface, this energy travels into the atmosphere where much of it is absorbed by water vapor and long-lived greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. When they absorb the energy radiating from Earth’s surface, microscopic water or greenhouse gas molecules turn into tiny heaters— like the bricks in a fireplace, they radiate heat even after the fire goes out. They radiate in all directions. The energy that radiates back toward Earth heats both the lower atmosphere and the surface, enhancing the heating they get from direct sunlight. This absorption and radiation ofheat by the atmosphere—the natural greenhouse effect—is beneficial for life on Earth. If there were no greenhouse effect, the Earth’s average surface t emperature would be a very chilly -18°C (0°F) instead of the comfortable 15°C (59°F) that it is today. The enhanced greenhouse effectWhat has scientists concerned now is that over the past 250 years, humans have been artificially raising the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at an ever-increasing rate, mostly by burning fossil fuels, but also from cutting down carbon-absorbing forests. Since the Industrial Revolution began in about 1750, carbon dioxide levels have increased nearly 38 percent as of 2009 and methane levels have increased 148 percent.。

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation.Global average air temperature near the Earth's surface rose 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.3 ±0.32 °F) during the past century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes, "most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations," which leads to warming of the surface and lower atmosphere by increasing the greenhouse effect. Natural phenomena such as solar variation combined with volcanoes have probably had a small warming effect from pre-industrial times to 1950, but a cooling effect since 1950. The basic conclusions have been endorsed by at least 30 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is the only scientific society that rejects these conclusions, and a few individual scientists also disagree with parts of them.Climate models referenced by the IPCC project that global surface temperatures are likely to increase by 1.1 to 6.4 °C (2.0 to 11.5 °F) between 1990 and 2100. The range of values reflects the use of differing scenarios of future greenhouse gas emissions and results ofmodels with differences in climate sensitivity. Although most studies focus on the period up to 2100, warming and sea level rise are expected to continue for more than a millennium even if greenhouse gas levels are stabilized. This reflects the large heat capacity of the oceans. The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, for example) trap energy from the sun. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space and Earth’s average temperature would be about 60°F colder. Because of how they warm our world, these gases are referred to as greenhouse gases.Have you ever seen a greenhouse? Most greenhouses look like a small glass house. Greenhouses are used to grow plants, especially in the winter. Greenhouses work by trapping heat from the sun. The glass panels of the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping. This causes the greenhouse to heat up, much like the inside of a car parked in sunlight, and keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter. The Earth’s atmosphere is all around us. t is the air that we breathe. Greenhouse gases inthe atmosphere behave much like the glass panes in a greenhouse. Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, passing through the blanket of greenhouse gases. As it reaches the Earth's surface, land, water, and biosp here absorb the sunlight’s energy. Once absorbed, this energy is sent back into the atmosphere. Some of the energy passes back into space, but much of it remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to heat up.The greenhouse effect is important. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals. DATE=3/2/01TITLE=ENVIRONMENT REPORT - UN Climate Change ReportBYLINE=Cynthia Kirk(Start at 59" ) This is Bill White with the VOA Special English ENVIRONMENT REPORT.A new United Nations report says poor countries would(1)suffer the most from the effects of the warming of theEarth.

Massive crop failures
“Climate change is expected to have the most severe impact on water supplies”. “Shortages in future are likely to threaten food production, reduce sanitation, hinder economic development and damage ecosystems. It causes more violent swings between floods and droughts.”
Increase in usage of chemical fertilizers on croplands
In the last half of the 20th century, the use of chemical fertilzers has risen dramatically. The high rate of application of nitrogen-rich fertilizers has effects on the heat storage of cropland and the run-off of excess fertilizers creates 'dead-zones' in our oceans.

英语:Unit 4 《Global Warming 》教案-reading (新人教版选修6)Period 2 Pre-reading, Reading, ComprehendingTeaching Goals:1.To read about global warming.2.To get some idea about the effect of global warming.3.To develop some basic reading skills.Teaching Procedures:Step 1. Warming UpPurpose: To arouse Ss interest in learning about global warming.1. Team workAnswer the questions below:(1) Have you ever seen a greenhouse?(2) How does a greenhouse work?(3) What do you think greenhouse gases do?2. Group workLook at the picture, and ask Ss some questions.T: What is this building made of?S1: It’s made of plastic.T: What’s its purpose?S2: Plants can grow in it when it’s cold outside.T: How does it work?S3: The glass traps the heat from the sun, making the air warm so that plants grow better.Step 2. Pre-readingPurpose: To get Ss to learn about greenhouse gases.1. Group workNow look at the word “GREENHOUSE GASES”. What does it mean?Greenhouse gases (GHG) are gaseous components of the atmosphere thatcontribute to the greenhouse effect .The major natural greenhouse gases are watervapor, which causes about 36-70% of the greenhouse effect on Earth (not includingclouds): carbon dioxide, which causes between 9-26%; and ozone, whichcausesbetween 3-7%(note that it is not really possible to assert that such-and-such a gas causes a certain percentage of the GHE, because the influences of the various gases are not additive .The higher ends of the ranges quoted are for the gas alone ;the lower end ,for the gas counting overlaps).Naturally occurring greenhouse gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrousoxide, and ozone. Certain human activities, however, add to the levels of most of these naturally occurring gases.Very powerful greenhouse gases that are not naturally occurring include hydrofluorocarbons(HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), which are generated in avariety of industrial processes. Each greenhouse gas differs in its ability to absorb heat in the atmosphere. HFCs and PFCsare the most heat-absorbent.2. Individual workGet Ss to answer these questions individually. Then let them discuss the answers.(1) Who wrote the magazine article? What is the name of the magazine?(2) What are the names of the three scientists mentioned in the article?(3) What do they think about global warming? Do they agree with one another?(4) What are the two graphs about?(5) What is the main topic of the article?Step 3. Reading1. SkimmingPurpose: To get a brief understanding of the text.Read through the text, preferably the first and the last sentences of each paragraph and write the key sentence of each paragraph.Key sentences of each paragraph:(1) A debate over whether it is human activity that has caused the global warming or whether it is just a naturalphenomenon.(2) Many scientists believe people have caused the increase in the earth’s temperature.(3) The increased extra amount of carbon dioxide traps more heat energy causing the global temperature to go up.(4) The levels of carbon dioxide have increased greatly over the last 100 to 150 years.(5) There are some different attitudes towards the causes of this increase in carbon dioxide.(6) Over the next 100 years the amount of warming could be as low as 1 to 1.5 degrees Celsius but it could be asmuch as 5 degrees Celsius.(7) An increase of five degrees would be a catastrophe.(8) Future warming would cause the sea level to rise by several meters.(9) Some predict any warming will be mild with few bad environmental consequences.(10) More carbon dioxide is a positive thing.(11) No one knows what the effects of global warming will be.2. ScanningPurpose: To get Ss to have some details in the text.Read the article carefully. Are these statements true or false? Write a T for each true sentence and an F for each false sentence.(1) The temperature last century didn’t increase much. ( )(2) Everyone believes that global warming is caused by the activities of humans. ( )(3) Janice Foster believes that burning fossil fuels causes global warming. ( )(4) Natural gas is a greenhouse gas. ( )(5) Carbon dioxide is a byproduct of burning fossil fuels. ( )(6) People accept Charles Keeling ’s data because he took accurate measurements. ( )(7) Flooding could be one of the effects of future global warming. ( )(8) George Hambley believes scientists are just guessing about the effects of global warming.( )(9) Geroge Hambley is worried about the effects of carbon dioxide on plant growth. ( )(10) It is clear what the effects of global warming will be.Suggested Answers:(1) F (2) F (3) T (4) F (5) T (6) T (7) T (8) T (9) F (10) F3. 2'40''Rising temperatures in coming years would lead to less sea ice in the Southern Ocean that surrounds Antarctica and fewer habitats and feeding grounds for penguins, says the World Wildlife Fund (世界自然基金会) in its report 2 Degrees is T oo Much.Antarctica and the Arctic are the most threatened regions from climate change. In the Antarctica, the temperature has risen 2.5 degrees in the past 50 years. This speed is nearly five times faster than that before the Industrial Revolution. It is mainly caused by burning fossil fuels. Unless nations reduce carbon dioxide emission1, the world will warm by an average of 2 degrees in less than 40 years. Rich nations should agree to reduce greenhouse gas emission. Temperatures near the Poles have risen much faster, which has led glaciers2 on the Antarctic Peninsula to melt3 quickly. The situation is quite critical, because in the past 50 years the number of emperor penguins (帝企鹅) has decreased by 50 percent across the whole Antarctica. On the Antarctic Peninsula’s northwest coast, the number of Adelie penguins (阿德里企鹅) has dropped surprisingly over the past 25 years.Fifty percent of the habitats of the emperor penguin and 75 percent of the habitats of the Adelie penguin face a rapid reduction, or even disappearance, if the global temperature rises 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels. With a 2-degree increase in global temperature and the decrease in sea ice thickness, emperor penguins will find itdifficult to find new areas to live. With less sea ice, penguins could be pushed further south, but this could prevent them from hunting for food during the dark winters, because they need at least a few hours of daylight to find their food.Notes:1. emission n. 2′45″Read the passage and then choose the best answer for each question.1. In the writer’s opinion, what has caused global warming?A. That the earth is getting hotter and hotter.B. That the atmosphere of the earth is becoming thinner.C. That carbon dioxide emission is too high.D. That the use of oxygen in the air is out of control.3. From the first paragraph, what do you think the author wants to tell us?A. Temperatures will rise in the coming years.B. Sea ice will disappear in the coming years.C. Penguins will suffer a lot in the future.D. 2 degrees will have a great effect on the WWF.Section B本文词数:293 参考时间:2'42''In the movie, The Day After Tomorrow, many climate changes including an ice age are caused by global warming. Much of the science in the movie has been questioned by people. However, there may be some truth to the idea in the movie that global warming could cause an ice age.The theory starts with an understanding of why Europe and Scandinavia are not colder already. After all, other places at the same latitude1 are covered with ice. The ocean current2called the Gulf Stream (墨西哥湾流) brings warm waters from the Caribbean to the UK and Europe. These waters warm the countries around their path. This is why the UK, Europe and Scandinavia have a warmer climate than Alaska. Global warming has nothing to do with this. Global warming is significant3. It could slow the Gulf Stream, or even stop it. If this were to happen, the cold waters wouldstay in the area of Europe, the UK, Scandinavia and the North-eastern US. It could mean an ice age for those regions. Some weakness in the Gulf Stream could happen for different reasons. These days, it could happen due to global warming, caused by human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels. If a new ice age happens, it will probably be caused by the melting of the polar ice. This will lead large quantities of cold and fresh water to come into the ocean. This would disrupt the Gulf Stream and cause the cooling of many areas that now have a mild climate.Scientists have gathered a lot of data from the oceans and the land to try to determine whether an ice age could be caused by global warming. With all this information at hand, it appearsthat it is indeed possible that global warming could lead to an ice age.Notes:1. latitude n. 2'00''Read the passage and then choose the best answer for each question.1. The Gulf Stream plays an important role in the warm climate of the UK, Europe and Scandinavia.C. Only the burning of fossil fuels can cause global warming.D. The climate of Alaska is also affected by the Gulf Stream.2. By saying "Global warming is significant.", the author means the following except ______.A. the Gulf Stream will be slowed down or stoppedB. the cold water will stay in the ocean of these areasC. people don’t have to suffer from coldD. an ice age is just waiting to happen in some areas3. Why does the author write this passage?A. To warn people of the dangerous effects of global warming.B. To prove that the polar ice will disappear.C. To prove that a new ice age is no way to come.D. When fossil fuels burn, they release large amounts of greenhouse gases ,the most important one is carbon dioxide which leads to global warming.
Global Warming
greenhouse
① why do people prefer building greehouses to grow vegetables and fruits? ② How does a greenhouse work ?
Discuss:
The higher temperature in cold period can help plants grow, so global warming does good to human beings. Do you agree?
Discuss:
do you think we should do to deal with global warming ?
1. A rising population is one of the main reasons that cause global warming
Do you believe it?
Thank
you!
What do you think we should do to deal with global warming ?
Live a low carbon life Use clean energy Turn off the electric equipment , when you don’t use it. Plant more trees Close the high-polluting factories Use buses or bikes to go to work instead of cars
The more the population increases, the more greenhouse gases that are produced and the greater the increase in temperature.
2. The burning of fossil fuel is one of the most famous causes for global warming
