AThe Gloria Barron Prize honors American young people from 8 to l8 who have shown leadership and courage in public service. Each year ten winners each receive$2,000 to support their higher education or their service work.Ellie Wen,18,was volunteering at a community center in Los Angeles. The center was set up to help immigrant families. She happened to meet adults in an EFL(English as a foreign language)class.“When I saw them struggling hard,I wondered how people in poor countries could learn English,”Ellie said.So she started a Website,“Repeat After Us”,where people can listen to English and practice their accents.Volunteers have helped Ellie record more than 6,600 texts, including Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address”.Hard work pays off. There were so many times that Ellie was discouraged, but she stuck to it.The Website crashed early on,and all the recordings were lost. But volunteers worked together vigorously to start over, and the visitors returned to the site.“Just follow your idea and know that the world is so kind.Even if you do have trouble, people will help you,”Ellie said.“I was really excited the first month, when we had 49 visitors,”she said. Now,more than 480,000 people from a11 over the world have visited the site.“I get e-mails from China,Egypt,India, and Brazil.”They say,“Thank you so much for this resource,we’ve been waiting for it for so long!”Ellie loves knowing she is helping so many people.Gloria Barron Prize winners like Ellie are enthusiastic about the work they do.And they encourage others to join in if they see a need.Anybody can be negative, but it needs somebody brave to be positive. Are you the brave one?1.Choose the right order of the following.a.Ellie started a Website,Repeat After Us.b.Ellie happened to meet adults in an EFL class.c.All the recordings were lost.d.Ellie became a Gloria Barron Prize winner.e.More than 480,000 people from all over the world visited the site.A.c—b—a—e—d B.a—e—d—c—b C.b—a—c—e—d D.b—c—a—e—d2.Which of the following statements is true?A.The Gloria Barron Prize honors people showing leadership and courage.B.Each year ten winners share US$2,000 to support their higher education.C.Ellie Wen was badly paid at a community center in Los Angeles.D.People can practice their English via Ellie’s website.3.The writer mainly talks about_____.A.how to open up a website with the help of othersB.how to teach immigrant families English via the InternetC.the Gloria Barron Prize and the story of one of its winners D.young people who help others in various waysBCell phones:Is there a cancer link?Could your cell phone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, power lines and Wi-Fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors. Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties.David Carpenter,a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany,in New York, thinks there’s a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia(白血病).Also there’s a greater than 90 percent chance that cell phones can cause brain tumors.“It’s apparent now that there’s a real risk,”said Carpenter. But others believe these concerns are not justified.Dr Martha Linet, head of radiation epidemiology(流行病学)at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion.“I don’t support warning labels for cell phones,”said Linet.“We don’t have the evidence that there’s much danger.”Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs(电磁场)and illness—so weak that it might not exist at a11.A multinational investigation of cell phones and brain cancer,in 13 countries outside the US,has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the European Union,in part by a cell phone industry group. The final report should come out later this year, but data so far don’t suggest a strong link between cell phone use and cancer risk.4.From the passage we can learn that some people are worried because________.A.they have evidence that the use of cell phones can lead to cancer B.they feel surprised and alarmed about cell phone useC.some experts have given a warningD.cell phones are responsible for brain tumors5.By saying“I don’t support warning labels for cell phones,”Dr Martha Linet has the idea that_______.A.the worrying is unnecessaryB.cancer—warning labels should be on cell phonesC.there is a link between cell phones and cancerD.cell phones have nothing to do with cancer6.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards the debate?A.Optimistic. B.Objective. C.Opposite.D.Casual.7.The underlined word“justified”in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to_____.A.explained B.confirmed C.classified D.restrictedCCan you believe your eyes?A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age.Martin Doherty,a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment,Doherty and his team tested the perception(观察力)of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10,and the second group included 24 a—dults aged 18 to 25.The first group of pictures showed two orange circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one.Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time.Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time.Next, both groups were shown pictures where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by gray circles. Here’s where the trick lies.In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles—making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one.And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circles—so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle. When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they weren’t fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before.Older children and adults,on the other hand, did not do as well.Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one,and adults got it wrong most of the time.As children get older,Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once:the tricky gray circles,as wellas the orange circle in the middle. As a result, they’re more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick.8.Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate______.A.Children’s and adults’eye-sightB.people’s ability to see accuratelyC.children’s and adults’brainsD.the influence of people’s age9.When asked to find the larger circle,_____.A.children at 6 got it wrong 79%of the time with no gray ones around B.only adults over 18 got it right 95%of the time with gray ones aroundC.children at 4 got it right about 79%of the time with gray ones aroundD.adults got it right most of the time with gray ones around 10.According to the passage,we can know that_____.A.a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white background B.an orange circle appears bigger than a gray one of the same size C.a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real sizeD.a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size 11.Why are younger children not fooled?A.Because they are smarter than older children and adults.B.Because older people are influenced by their experience.C.Because people’s eyes become weaker as they grow older.D.Because their brain can hardly notice related things together.DAs you are probably aware, the latest job markets news isn’t good:Unemployment is still more than 9 percent, and new job growth has fallen close to zero. That’s bad for the economy,of course. And it may be especially discouraging if you happen to be looking for a job or hoping to change careers right now.But it actually shouldn’t matter to you nearly as much as you think. That’s because job growth numbers don’t matter to job hunters as much as job staff-turnover(人员流动)data.After all, existing jobs open up every day due to promotions, resignations, and retirements.(Yes,people are retiring even in this economy.)In both good times and bad,staff-turnover creates more openings than economic growth does.Even in June of 2007,when the economy was still booming along, job growth was only 132,000,while staff-turnover was 4.7 million! And as it turns out, even today—with job growth near zero—over4 million job hunters are being hired every month.I don’t mean to imply that overall job growth doesn’t have animpact on one’s ability to land a job. It’s true that if total employment were higher.it would mean more jobs for all of us to choose from(and compete for). And it's true that there are currently more people applying for each available job opening, regardless of whether it’s a new one or not.But what often distinguishes those who land jobs from those who don’t is their ability to stay motivated. They’re willing to do the hard work of identifying their valuable skills;be creative about where and how to look;learn how to present themselves to potential employers;and keep going, even after repeated rejections. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that 2.7 million people who wanted and were available for work hadn’t hunted for it within the last four weeks and were no longer even classified as unemployed. So don’t let the headlines fool you into giving up.Four million people get hired every month in the U.S.You can be one of them 12.The author tends to believe that high unemployment rate____.A.takes job opportunities from peopleB.prevents many people from changing careersC.should not stop people from looking for a jobD.does not mean the U.S. economy is worsening13.What does the author say about overall job growth?A.It doesn’t have much effect on individual job seekers.B.It increases people’s confidence in the economy.C.It gives a ray of hope to the unemployed.D.It doesn’t mean greater job security for the employed.14.What is the key to finding a job according to the author? A.Education B.Intelligence C.Persistence D.Experience 15.What do we learn about The Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment data?A.They clearly indicate how healthy the economy is.B.They provide the public with the latest information.C.They warn of the structural problems in the economy.D.They don’t include those who have stopped looking for a job.第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分l0分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Looking throughmultiple websites for the best deal can be a big challenge.Even when you do book, there’s no guarantee that you are going to get the best price."You just don’t know when to pull the tr igger. It’s not like buying anything elseI can think of,〞said George Hobica, founder ofAirfarewatchdog.com.Harriet Levy paid $179 for a recent round-trip flight on American Airlinesbetween New York and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sitting just one row behind her,Shirley Harrison paid $215. A few rows back, Ellis and Dianne Traub paid $317 each. There were at least 12 fares on the flight, ranging from $169 to $360.There’s no reason for it, Harrison said.Fares can change significantly in just a few hours. One Delta flight from NewYork to Los Angeles jumped from $755 to $1,143 from a Friday to Saturday in lateApril, then fell to $718 0n Sunday. The flight was one of a dozen the Associated Press followed over three monthsfor a vacation between July 16 and 22. The number one finding: avoid bookingtickets on weekends. It’s the most expensive time to buy. There’s no way to guarantee the best fare. But before booking, travelers shouldpay attention to this additional advice:Book on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That’s when airlines most oftenoffer sales.Buy in advance, but not too early. The best time is four to six weeks beforetraveling. In general, prices for any given flight are highest eight to ten weeks andtwo to three weeks in advance.Make use of social media. Airlines are giving more benefits like exclusive〔独有的〕 sales to travelers who interact with them on Twitter and Facebook. Those specials are often gone within hours. The so-called discount airlines - JetBlue, Air-Tran, Southwest and Frontier-adjust their fares less frequently than other airlines, so you can feel more confidentthat the price will stay the same. But their prices aren’t always the lowest.Researching multiple airlines’ fares is the only way to get a good de al.1.What can we infer from the first sentence ofthe text?A.Passengers are unable to search for airfares.B.Airlines often play games with passengers.C.Airfares are set in different situations.D.It’s difficult for passengers to get the bes t price.2.The underlined phrase "pull the trigger" in Paragraph 3 probably means ________. A.start searching B.get the highest priceC.make a purchase D.get on board the plane3.By using a lot of figures, the author intends to ________.A.show there is standard price for every single airline B.discover the rules behind airfaresC.guarantee passengers a low priceD.prove airfares can vary widely 4.Passengers are advised to book flights ________.A.in the middle ofthe weekB.on special websitesC.several months before travelingD.with airlines which are famous for offering discount pricesBRecordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.5. We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of .A. loud noisesB. some cropsC. video camerasD. angry bees6. As mentioned in the passage, Lucy .A. works by herself in AfricaB. needs to test more elephant groupsC. has stopped elephants eating cropsD. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms7. Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?A. To record the sound of bees.B. To make a video of elephants.C. To see if elephants would run away.D. To find out more about the behavior of bees.8. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees.B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.CWhat did your school smell like? Was it noisy or peaceful? It might not seemimportant, but a growing body of research suggests that smells and sounds can havean impact on learning, performance and creativity.Bridget Shield has been conducting studies and advising people on the effects ofall sorts of noises, such as traffic and sirens, as well as noise made by the childrenthemselves."Everything points to a harmful impact of the noise on children’sperformance, in numeracy, in literacy, and in spelling,〞 says Shield. Shield says the sou nd of“babble〞-the chatter of other children, is particularly distracting in the classroom.。

AI paid a visit to Cambridge last January. Though the trip took me5 hours and it rained the whole day with strong winds there, the town deserved a visit. The bus started at 6:10 a. m. It stopped at 4 airports before we finally arrived, which wasted more time than we expected. Tired with long sitting, one passenger stood up to relax his numbed legs. The driver asked him to sit down but in vain. So he pulled up and said seriously, "Either you get off or sit down. "To him, safety is the first policy.Cambridge consists of nearly thirty colleges. The oldest part of the university was built in the 13th century while the newest was founded in the mid 1960s. The number of the students is so great that many students live in lodgings(出租房)and move into college for their final year.Cambridge is called a university town because there is no clear separation between the university buildings and the rest of the city. The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The heart of Cambridge has shops, pubs, and supermarkets, but most of it is university-colleges, departments, libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. Students fill the shops, cafes, banks and churches, making these as well part of the university. With over 10, 000 undergraduates and postgraduates, the town is a busy place indeed. Students here are not allowed to keep cars. If you happen to be walking in the street during a break, better stop a moment to avoid the boiling sea of bicycles hurrying in all directions, carrying students from one college or lecture room to another.1. The writer believed that the trip took more time because of________A. bad weatherB. unexpected stops of the busC. one passengerD. an accident on the way2. Why is Cambridge called a university town?A. It has 10, 000 undergraduates and postgraduates.B. There are nearly thirty colleges in the town.C. All the students and staff live in the town.D. The university and town are fully combined.3. It can be inferred that most Cambridge students take________ as their first means of transport.A. boatsB. carsC. bicyclesD. busesBWhen I was a baby, I entertained you and made you laugh. Whenever I was “bad”, you'd shake your finger at me and ask, “How could you?”--but then you'd give up, and roll me over for a belly scratch and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. My housetraining was a long process, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks, runs in the park and car rides. We stopped for ice cream. I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. Eventually, you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement, I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them too. Your wife was afraid I would bite them. But nevertheless, as they began to grow, I became their friend. Now, you have a new job in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your “family”, but there was a time when I was your only family.I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the dog pound. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said, “I know you will find a good home for her.” They shrugged and gave you a pained look. The children were in tears as they waved me goodbye. And “How could you?” were the only three words that swept over my mind.Is it better to live with hope or without hope? At first, whenever anyone passed my pen (围栏), I rushed to the front, hoping it was you, that you had changed your mind and that this was all a bad dream. My beloved master, I will think of you and wait for you forever. I hope you receive more faithfulness from your family than you showed to me.4. Who tells this story?A. A dog.B. Achild. C. A dog'sowner. D.A dog trainer5. It did not trust humans any more.D. It was excited about the pound.7.What is the theme of the story?A. Be ready forchanges.B. Never expect too much.C. Never complain about yourlife. D. Be faithful to those who love you.CWhen I was young I wanted to be a model,so when a national contest was staged,I convinced my parents to take me for an audition(试演). I was selected and told I had potential. They said that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most prestigious(有声望的)modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At l 3,my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go.We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model.I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!Of course,I wasn’t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew t o 5'9”(about 1.75metres)I could be a success.I prayed for a growth spurt(冲刺)because I could not imagine giving up my dream.I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $500 for classes.$500 for a photo shoot and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of me begging. The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every day I didn’t receive a call,I grew more depressed. The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call in New York City.We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short.I was devastated(感到难以承受的).Years later,I realized that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it.I wanted to be special and I was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.8.What’s the main reason why the author wanted to be a model? Only Native Americans, cowboys, and explorers entered this area before the park was set up in 1964. Even today, it is difficult to walk or ride through the park. The roads are still made of dirt. Driving requires a special vehicle. The National Park Service says Canyon-lands National Park is wild America.Rivers created the area as they cut rocks into many different formations. At the center of the park are two deep canyons carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. Three areas that surround these rivers are included in the park. One of these areas is called the Maze District. This area includes rock art made by people who lived there more than 2,000 years ago. Yet many people today cannot see the Maze District because it is so difficultto reach. The area is one of the loneliest and wildest areas in the United States.Another area of the park is called the Needles. It includes long, thin, red and white rocks that reach high into the air like fingers on a hand.A good way to see all the areas of Canyonlands National Park is to fly over it. A one hour trip in a small airplane makes it possible to see the park's red rocks, arches and flat areas where ancient Indian people once lived. From high in the air, visitors can clearly see the third area of the park--a high broad flat rock known as the Island in the Sky. The island was formed between the two rivers.Another interesting formation is called the Upheaval Dome. One possible version:
The saying that practice makes perfect means that after you have plenty of
practice in what you are doing, you will be perfect in it, and it is the same with
English learning.
For example, when we learn English, we have to learn grammar, words, expressions
and so on. The best way to improve the language skills is to practice, practice
and practice. If we only learn the grammar rules by heart and don’t do enough exercises, it’s certain that we can’t use the language freely. This applies
equally to be coming a good musician or painter.
It is evident that practice is important for everybody. If you want to improve
your English, either speaking or writing, remember that practice makes perfect.
