LampbrellaYou can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. ①But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella. The designer says he ②come up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street ad saw the street lamps ③lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy built into a street lamp.” he said. The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella ④on demand. Sensors then ensure that the umbrella offers p edestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.⑤In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lighting strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on my street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

AArtificial intelligence(AI,人工智能)can help us make phone calls. It can guide us to where we want to go. It can play games. And now,AI can do even more things.Researchers from Microsoft have created the first machine translation system that can translate news articles from Chinese to English. The researchers tested the system by asking it to translate hundreds of sentences taken from news stories. Then, language experts compared the results to the translation that were done by humans. The experts said that the system's translations were as good as the human translations.Experts used several methods to improve the system's translation abilities. “Much of our research is really learned from how we humans do things,” lead researcher Liu Tieyan said. One method is called dual learning(对偶学习). In this method, the system translates every sentence from Chinese to English,as well as translates the sentences back from English into Chinese. This way,the system can improve itself and learn from its own mistakes. This is similar to what humans do to make sure their translations are exact.Another method makes use of deliberation networks(推敲网络).The researchers taught the system to repeat the process of translating the same sentence over and over. Gradually, the system can improve the quality of its translations. This is similar to how people correct their own writing by going through it again and again.( )1. They reach for their mobile phones when they wake up in the morning, and keep checking their social media apps to get the latest updates(更新).A report from Google shows that 70 percent of people don't want to spend much time on their phones. This is why Google introduced an app called Dashboard for the new Android operating system(安卓操作系统). This new app includes functions(功能) that help users manage the time. For example, users can see how many times they've unlocked their phone, how many times they've checked their social media apps, and how much time they spend on each app every day.Once the users see this information, they'll be able to make some changes. With the App Timer(计时) function, users can set a time limit for how long they can use each app for every day. After they've hit the limit, they won't be able to use the app until the next day. And with another function, the app gets incoming calls silent when the user puts the phone face down.If people truly want to make full use of their free time instead of losing hours on their phones, these new functions are just one way of doing that. After all,who needs to use an app to stop you from using other apps? Scientists say that more than 40 percent of teenagers and adults consider themselves shy. Shyness is feeling a little nervous or as if you want to hide when you're around other people or in a new situation.___ Scientists say such things as genetics(遗传基因), life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy. For example, in some families, everybody seems to be shy. What happens if you are shy? Well, being shy may cause you to avoid or miss opportunities you would enjoy. How do people overcome (克服)shyness? This is what Gilbert tells us. "When I started off trying to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practicing smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me. “But shyness is not the kind of thing that most people can get over overnight. Overcoming shyness take time and needs practice. Here are some tips given by scientists.Think of what to talk about before you leave home. Prepare things to talk about before you're in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversations.Let people know you're shy. If you're shy, just show it. Instead of letting people guess, tell them the truth. Explain that you are shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.Make things easy for the other person. Remember, you’re not the only shy person around. Do what you think might help others feel good-for example, say hello or smile.Pick one social skill to practice at a time. Start simply. It is a planet that could support life. This planet is just 4.2 light years away from us. It is so close that space scientists have considered it as a next door neighbor. They say it could be reached by an unmanned spaceship before the end of the century—in time for people alive today to see it.An international team of scientists found the planet moving around the star called “Proxima Centauri”. The result came out last month from the scientific magazine Nature.Scientists have long thought that a planet with water is important for life. And it has to be neither too hot nor too cold. The newlydiscovered planet is a little larger than earth. Scientists have named it Proxima B. It moves around its sun,Proximal Central once every 11 days.American scientists have been using instruments for years to look for earthlike planets. In 2013,scientists' best guess was that there are about one billion(1,000 million) “earths” in space.Alan Boss is the chairman of a group for outer space research. He said that Proxima B not only confirms(确认) the discovery of a planet, but also increases the number of other possible “earths” greatly.Boss said it is possible, even likely, that most stars have at least one earthlike planet, which he considers surprising. So from the early number of a billion, this new research suggests there may be as many possibleearthlike planets as there are stars in the Galaxy(银河系). That is,anywhere from 250 billion to 500 billion“earths”.This makes the possibility of living things increasingly likely. Boss said he believes human beings will be able to show that there is life in places besides earth in his lifetime. “I am 65,” he said,“ but I expect to still be alive when it happens.”( )1. When will it be possible for an unmanned spaceship to reach Proximal B?A. In about eighty years.B. In about 4.2 years.C. In about eleven day.D. In about one billion years.( )2. In the fourth paragraph, the writer thinks that ________ is necessary for life.A. waterB. lightC. airD. wind( )3. What does the underlined word “This” stand for in the last paragraph?A. Scientists have discovered an earthlike planet last month.B. There are far more earthlike planets than people thought.C. Proximal B is not far from earth and is just like our neighbor.D. The Galaxy will be the only place for living things to live in.( )4. What does Alan Boss mean by saying “but I expect to still be alive when it happens”?A. His health is in good state and he's sure he will live a long life.B. Science is developing much faster than ever in recent years.C. Scientists may soon find fact that there's life on other planets.D. America is far ahead of other countries in space research.GBeauty sleep is a real thing, researches have shown that people who have enough sleep look more attractive (有魅力的) to others.A few bad nights is enough to make a person look "especially" more ugly, their sleep experiments show. The researchers asked 25 university students to join in their sleep experiment. They were asked to get a good night's sleep for two nights.A week later, they were asked to sleep for only four hours every night for two nights in a row.The researchers took make-up free (素颜) photos of the volunteers after both the good and the bad sleep.Next, they asked 122 strangers to have a look at the photos and judge (评价) them on attractiveness, health, and sleepiness, as well as asking them: "How much would you like to make friends with this person in the picture?"The strangers were good at judging if the person they were looking at was tired, and, if they were sleepy, their attractiveness score was low.The strangers also said they wouldn't want to socialize with the tired students. The researchers say this is natural for people. An unhealthy-looking face makes people run away. In other words, people don't want to hang around with people who might be ill.Dr. Brewer, an expert at the University of Liverpool said "Judgement of attractiveness is often unconscious (无意识的), hut we all do it, and we are able to judge on even something small like whether someone looks tired or unhealthy. This study is a good reminder of how important sleep is to us." ( )1. When did the researchers take make-up free photos?A. After two nights good sleep.B. After two nights bad sleep.C. The message reads,“Hey,I'm not OK. Please call me,text_me,or come to find me.”US teenagers Hannah Lucas,15,and her brother Charlie,13,have created an app called not OK. People just need to pay $1.99(12.5 yuan) each month to use it.Hannah was inspired(启发) to create the app during a dark time in her life last year. She suffered from a disease that caused her to pass out at school. Other kids sometimes bullied(欺凌) her about this. She felt sad and wanted to find an app that would allow her to get help when she wasn't feeling OK.She asked her brother Charlie, whose nickname is “Tech Support”,to find such an app. When they couldn't find one, they decided to create one themselves. They came up with some designs for the app first. Charile took a programming class last summer and built a website for the app. Hannah also shared her idea in her summer business class. Some app developers showed interest and decided to help her. At last, the app came out in the US and Canada on January 31.Hannah is happy that her app is helping others. “It makes everything I went through last year worth it,” she said.( )1.Who will know you're in trouble when you touch the “not OK” button?A. Influenced by the launch of the first manned mission to Mars next month, you will most likely get a gift card for a space trip. The interest in trips,100km above the surface of the Earth, has grown steadily since such a trip began. However, the market has grown much larger this year since the official announcement of the Mars mission. More lowcost space-lines have entered the market and you can now find flights for such a trip for as low as $3,495. It's very reasonable.Space tourism(旅游业;观光业)is one of the markets that have developed fast during the last decade, with the opening of the Star bright Hotel on the moon as well as the low orbital hotels that started accepting guests. However, accommodation in space is still expensive for the average household,so the suborbital(亚轨道的) flights with thirtyminute weightlessness during the threehour flight will for some time be the most popular trip. However, the space-lines might in the future face fierce competition between space elevators(太空升降舱),like the one that is projected to start construction within two years. Once it is fully functional,it will start to ship cargo to space. But it will accept passengers as soon as possible to get back the large investment. Even if the elevator becomes successful,it will take several years before there are more elevators in the world to get in the competition for space traffic with the space-lines.Those who are looking for a little bit of adventure and have extra money to spend may want to considera suborbital flight in space. While a suborbital flight may not be the space mission that you have always dreamed of,it will give you the rare opportunity to see what our planet looks like in a highaltitude flight outside our atmosphere. So before you enjoy a trip by elevator to space, enjoy a suborbital flight first.( )1. From Paragraph 1,what will happen in January,2031?A. A gift card will be taken to Mars.B. Mars will be explored for the first time.C. Man will go to Mars for the first time.D. An affordable space trip will come true.( )2. The underlined “average” can most probably be replaced by “________” in this passage.A. commonB. highincomeC. lowcostD. lowincome( )3. What is the space elevator's purpose in accepting passengers as soon as possible?A. To ship cargo to space.B. To get in the competition between space-lines.C. To start the construction of more space elevators.D. To get back the large investment.( )4. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A. Space tourism has developed fast during the last ten years.B. A suborbital fight may be the space mission that you have dreamed of.C. The suborbital flights will be the most popular trip for some time.D. Even though the elevator becomes successful,we still wait for a few years to see more elevators come out.( )5. We can know from the passage that________.A. the low orbital hotels have opened since a space trip beganB. within two years, space elevators will begin to ship cargo and people to spaceC. during the suborbital fights, you will experience 30 minutes weightlessnessD. if you want to meet your curiosity, you may try a suborbital fightKThere's much to see under the sea,but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reaching out of to touch something and completely missing it.Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It's just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water! What's more,in deeper water, colors just don't seem as bright. In fact,it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths(波长) of light that are reflected (反射) from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let's take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost(鬼怪)! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again.( )1. You miss the object under water when you want to touch it because ________.A. your eyesight is quite poorB. you are not quick enoughC. it is not as close as it seemsD. it disappears very quickly( )2. The example of the wet suit is used to explain the change of ________ of an object underwater.A. the sizeB. the colorC. the positionD. the weight( )3. The underlined word “descend” probably means “________” in Chinese in this passage.A. 上升B. 酒污C. 屏息D. 下潜( )4. Which of the following is true?A. A fourmeterlong fish looks three meters long underwater.B. The wavelengths of red light are longer than those of blue light.C. Much water will be taken in by the swimmer deep in the wave.D. You will see a ghost if you go as deep as 6 to 9 meters into the sea.( )5. The best title of this passage is ________.A. The Standard of Color UnderwaterB. The Direction of Light UnderwaterC. The Brightness of Color UnderwaterD. The Behavior of Light UnderwaterLArtificial intelligence(人工智能),or AI in short,is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition(识别) is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals(罪犯). Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. It also checks the ID of ridehailin g(网约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.AI is also used in selfdriving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passersby to let them cross the street, but selfdriving cars don't have this a bility. Carmakers are testing a light signal system to help them “speak” to humans. The system can show what。

However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine. The North Pole has no land, only thick ice.Temperatures seldom go above32°F,at which water turns into ice. Most of the time,it stays below zero.In winter temperatures are usually as low as-30°F.Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole.About100years ago,two men,Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th,1909.It was really a hard trip for them. There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic(北极圈)on foot.People who stayed there may face many problems:very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited.Few people can live in such a difficult place.People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface.Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water(水道)called“leads”.Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.1.This passage is probably from___________.A.a book review B.a science bookC.a school report D.a computer magazine2.According to the passage, what happened about100years ago?A.Two men succeeded in getting to the North Pole.B.Temperatures in the North Pole went above32°F.C.The environment in the North Pole suddenly became worse.D.The North Pole changed into thick ice because of the temperatures.3.What does the underlined word“uninhabited”probably mean in Chinese?A. 4.The reason for the ice to break into two opening lanes of water is_____________. But most people will never get a chance to go inside the White House, the famous home of the President of the United States.Luckily, there is a new app that can bring the White House to life for anyone with a smartphone equipped for computer programs. To experience this famous building, you just need your smartphone and a one-dollar bill. The new app is called 1600, which makes one think of the real street address of the White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, in Washington D.C.The 1600 app creates a small White House on your smartphone. After downloading(下载) it, you only need to point the camera on the phone at one dollar to start the experience. The dollar then changes into a three-dimensional(三维的) model of the White House before your eyes. It creates images having length, width and height.
抓住四个"W"和一个"H",就是边读边用铅笔做些标记,把What (事件),When (时间),Where(地点),Why(原因),How(经过)划出来。

These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize; they can also be small, such as becoming one of the best students in your class.Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream real?Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making your dreams real is life’s biggest challenge. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that it’s impossible for you to become a writer. Those kinds of ideas stop you from realizing your dream. In fact, everyone can realize his dream. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want every day and then your dream will come true faster. You should know that a big dream is, in fact, made up of many small dreams. You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will help you to get better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book.As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. The radio telescope thus appeared, and it is considered one of t he greatest inventions in the twentieth century. Reber built the world’s first radio telescope in 1937. Ryle and Hewish developed radio telescope systems for the location of weak radio sources, and they shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1974.A radio telescope is usually made up of:One or more antennas to collect the radio waves. Most antennas are made in the shape of a dish to collect and reflect, the radio waves to the sub-reflector, in the same way as a curved mirror focuses visible light to one point.A receiver and amplifier to receive the radio waves from the sub-reflector, and make these weak radio waves strong enough to be recorded and turned into electronic signals. To make an amplifier sensitive enough, it is usually cooled to, very low temperatures (e. g. as low as -270℃).A recorder to keep a record of the electronic signals. Most: radio telescopes today keep the signals to the computer’s memory disk for astronomers to analyze later.Radio wavelengths are much longer than those of visible light, and the radio waves from deep space are always weak. To catch Radio wavelengths are much longer than those of visible light, and the radio waves from deep spaceare always weak. To catch these waves, radio telescopes usually have huge antennas. The sizes of most antennas in use today are around 50 to 300 metres in diameter. The antenna of FAST in Guizhou, China, the latest and largest radio telescope in the world, is 500 metres in diameter, as large as the size of 30 football fields. To avoid interferences, and keep the telescopes sensitive, radio telescopes are built in places where there are no human radio waves or electronic signals. For example, FAST is 5 kilometres away from the closest village and 25 kilometres away from the nearest town.Radio telescopes create pictures of the sky, not in visible light, but in radio waves. This is extremely useful, because there are objects that can’t be seen, objects that we wouldn’t even know without radio telescopes.5. Radio telescopes help collect ___________ from the universeA. lightB. objectsC. radio wavesD. visible signals6. Most antennas of radio telescopes are made in the shape of a dish to ___________.A. make the antennas strong enoughB. increase the number of radio wavesC. turn radio waves into electronic signalsD. focus radio waves on the sub-reflector7. "Saying no to a plastic straw is an easy way to make a big difference,"Dana Lofflin who started said. "Do we really want to pass on to our children a world harmed by plastic?"People have found some tasty ways to reduce waste. A company in India made the first-ever spoon that people can eat. You don’t have to eat the spoon. You can throw it away. It decomposes(分解) in just a few days. David Edwards, a scientist at Harvard University, designed an eatable bag which can protect the food or drink inside. It is a delicious replacement for plastic ones.9. Technology is everywhere. We see it any place we go and,in fact, almost all of us carry some piece oftechnology with us every time we leave the house. What I always forget, though,is just how useful andpowerful technology can be when we want to help others
There is not a single room in my house that does not have some electronic devices(设备) lying around init. Whenever I am at home, I am almost always using at least one electronic device. The UnitedNations,

I discovered just how much online volunteering there is to do in the world.
I must say that I waste a lot of time on the computer and the time I spend on it could be much betterspent if I were to take up a little online volunteering The technology we carry about everywhere can have a great power to do good for the world and to help others 可知,故选D。
