1. Analysis of teaching material
(1). Status and function
This is the 11th module in the whole book. The topic of this module is about custom. And centering on this topic, we will learn about some traditions and customs in China and in England. After the whole studying, students will be able to talk about customs in different countries, and give suggestions to foreign visitors. According to the National Curriculum Standard, such a topic is related to students’ daily life, so it is easy to arouse students’ interests in this module.
Unit one is a listening and speaking class. In this unit, the friends are celeb rating Lingling’s birthday and talking about gift opening customs in America and China. They also talk about other customs in China with the help of modal verbs “must” and “mustn’t”. In Module 10, students have learnt the use of modal verbs “may”and “might”, so it won’t be difficult for students to master the usage of “must”and “mustn’t”. The topic of customs will expand students’ horizon and help them know more about the world.
(2). Analysis of the students
For students in grade eight, they have a proper amount of words and grammar. And they are eager to talk about things related to their daily life. So the topic of customs in China and abroad can easily arouse students’ interests. But students’ English levels in the class are quite different, so the teacher should design activities of different levels for different students
and make sure all the students are involved in the class activities.

improved, and they are able to talk about customs in different countries.
Emotional aims.
By studying the customs and rules in China and abroad, students should learn to know and respect different cultures in different countries.
And we also want to:
cultivate the students’ awareness of foreig n culture;
arouse students’ interests in daily English learning.
(4) Important Points and difficult points
Based on the above teaching aims and the students’ learning experience,
The important points are as follows: (1) to master the key vocabulary (2) to talk about customs in different countries.
The difficult point is how to use to use must, mustn’t, can and can’t to talk about rules.
Teaching Key: The teacher should make full use of the topic of customs and do enough practice concerning on talking about customs in different countries To do so, the students will have enough chance to experience and use the key language.
2. The Teaching Methods
As we all know, the main instructional aims of learning English in the Middle School is to cultivate students’ abi lities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I’ll mainly use Task-based teaching method and Communicative teaching method. That is to say, I’ll give the students some tasks and create some real situation activities to help them understand the passage.
In a word, I want to make the students the real masters in class. So all the activities I choose in class is based on
students’interest and their mental characteristics. The students are encouraged to think actively, investigate, work in groups, cooperated and learn to understand the theme of the lesson with the help of pictures, forms and so on.
3. Teaching aids
PPT; Projector, a tape recorder
4. Teaching Procedure
Step 1: Revision
Revise the topic about the weather in order to compare the difference between China and England. Teacher can ask like these:
(1) -What’s the weather like in China in summer? (It is very hot in China.)
(2) -What’s the weather like in England in summer?
-It often rains in England.(The weather is changeable.)
2. Discuss the things we must/can do with the students by asking questions:
(1) -What must we take if it rains?
-We must take an umbrella.
My purpose is to revise what we have leant in the last module. By asking these questions, students will know something about the usage of “must and must n’t”. Step 2: warming up and lead-in
Play a guessing game. Show students some pictures and sentences describing the objects in activity 2, and let them guess what they are.
My pur pose is to arouse students’ interests and help them learn the new words.
Step 3: Listening
Task 1: Listen for the first time and answer
What present do they buy for Lingling?
My purpose: By first listening, the students will get the main idea of the dialogue. Task 2: Listen again then answer two detail questions.
My purpose: To train students’ listening ability to find the detailed information from the listening material.
Task 3:Students work in groups of four, read the diague and then discuss “When Linglin g accepts(接受)the present, what must she do ? “
My purpose: To help students to notice the different customs in China and abroad. And by working in groups, students in a lower level can get some help from the good language learners and they may have a chance to speak in the group.
Step 4: After-listening
Task 1: Read the dialogue again and then check what you usually do in China.
Task 2.Read again and find the difference between Chinese tradition and Western tradition, fill in the table in groups.
