Mapping Out College Life
After you finish cramming for the college entrance exams, maybe you feel it`s time to sit back and relax a while. But wait a moment. Pull yourself together and try making some plans for college first!
Freshman year: Take a look at yourself
It is the perfect time to do a quick evaluation before you really do anything. So it is better to list your strong and weak points and think of areas you want to work on or improve. For instance, you can get a real picture of your leadership, communication, and independent thinking skills.
Set goals that you really want. “They don`t have to be so specific, like entering a certain company, because your ideas may change over time. Just give yourself some direction,” is the advice of SuHuiying, director of recruitment and resourcing at KPMG China, an accountingfirm.
According to Su, one major thing is to form good habits in your study and in handling things. “It`s important to learn to be a careful, trustworthy pers on,” she points out.
Also, freshman year is the time to get to know class mates,professors and advisors. Try to build up and strenghten ties with them in the beginning. Believe it or not, they can have a big influence on the future.
Finally, join student clubs and organizations that give you the opportunity to practice teamwork. Find interesting elective courses.
Sophomore (大二)year: Consider a minor ¥¥¥¥¥
Always keep your grades up, because they will be the focus of teachers or employers. Consider adding a minor now.
Join extracurricular activities on campusas much as you can, or do some community work. Look for part-time or summerjobs in your field of interest. If you like journalism, it`s the perfect time to try working for a local paper or TV station. More important: try to get a leadership position in a college club or organization.
English skills have to be formed early. Especially if you have plans to go abroad or to continue on to grad school, try taking English tests such as TOEFL, or CET 6, as early as possible. Junior year: Think about specializing
Continue to expand your interests, and think about the true area you want to engage in, in the future. Go on to do aninternship and seek a leadership position in your clubs in your spare time.
For job seekers, pay a visit to your university`s career counceling center for advice on your future. It`s not tooearly to make a first draft of a resume.
Attend job fairs to get a first feel for them. Start developing interview skills. Start thinking about an interview wardrobe. For study abroad, you need to think about references and recommendation letters. Try to find influential or respected people who will speak highly of you. That early networking pays off now. Also,start working on your applications and required papers.
But if you`re going to grad school, it`s the right time to select universities and prepare for tests. Chen Dasheng, a senior at Sun Yat-sen University, kindly advises students not to delay all the heavy workload until the last year. “In fact, I wish I`d started preparing a year ago, because there are too many distractions now. And your competitors are already getting ahead.”
Senior year: Polish your resume
It`s time to develop a good thesis to wrap up your academic achievements. This matters a great deal.
According to Sun Mei, jobseekers need to polish that resume by this time. They need to finalize interview preparations. Think of clever response to difficult questions and practice your fluency. Find some good personal stories or anecdotes to impress the interviewer.
List all the companies, even dozens of them, that you`d like to work for. Get information from their websites or through friends or teachers. Take part in campus interviews.
Fan Qiaoyi, 22, who works for Deloitte, one of the world`s top four accounting firms, did all of this. “All your hard work
and efforts go to just a crucial few minutes,” she says. “You need to outshine everyone else.”
For study abroad, you need to send your materials to the ideal grad school on time, then wait patiently for a response.Even good news may come late.
There`s no shortcut to academic or employment success. Plan diligently for the four years and you`ll be rewarded. And you`ll enjoy school.
大学生为什么就业难
Although college students are the ones who have been well educated, it is very difficult for undergraduate students, especially students in China, to apply for a job. It is ironically, but it is a widely accepted truth.
The most important factor is that whether the colleges students have actually understand the academic theories and hold the practical skills is doubt by most employers. Many companies exh ibit their disappointment about students’ unawareness and unsophisticated exposed in the interview: some of them are not familiar with their major, and some of them even do not want to sacrifice for a good salary. It is admittedly that for the majority of college students who are not given many chances to experiment, the acquainting of practical skills are, to some extent, inapproachable. Also, being the only child of a family, many students nowadays are well cultivated: self-oriented, pride without any according, and even not able to work hard and fight for something.After several years of study and encourage by the stories, some college students are arrogant and fabricate some unrealistic dreams about future career. Thus, sometimes a company would rather hire the one who was with a lower degree, but willing to work hard.
However, s tudents are not the only one who causes the unemployment of undergraduate students. Social factor is also involved, and its effects are tremendous.
The social unemployment, led by the current global economical crisis, propels the depressed market of students’ employment to even a worse situation. The number of people which was initially planned to be hired was less, what’s more, many companies which had fired many workers, enhance there standard of employing, they want student with a master degree or working experiences. Thus, undergraduate students are limited to an embarrass circumstance.
Additionally, discrimination of major, sex and universities aggravate the problem. As the i mpact of economic crisis, economical major students are difficult to find a job. And it is a common phenomenon that female students major in engineering are discriminated. The official reason declared by many companies is that they believe that male workers would be more skilled, divergent, and ambitious on work, also, thinking about the safety,it is extremely inconvenient when women are on a business trips. Of course, there are some jobs withholding a male discrimination, like the service and caring job. On the other hand, university discrimination is that companies are tend to hire students form famous universities, thus students form comparatively less famous universities have less opportunities to find a reasonable work. Accordingly, to find a reasonable job in such a social environment is so difficult, especially for the college students who are unskilled,immature and with an unrealistic illusion of future work. But it doesn’t mean that the consequence is desperate. In order to develop a good career, students must firstly enhance the personal ability, that is learn the practical skills and social behavior, practice to express and recommend yourself, willing to take hard jobs and be responsible. Thus, no matter how difficult the circumstance is, job opportunities will be plentiful for you
College Students’ Job Hunting
范文一:
In recent years, college students find it increasingly difficult to get a job. It sounds strange since young college students are usually intelligent, well-educated phenomenon, aspirant and eager to bring their talent into full play. Then what underlies the strange phenomenon?
There are several reasons for this. To begin with, nowadays college students aim too high. All they want are “good” jobs which could offer good salary, comfortable working conditions, high social status among others. Consequently, most college students are unwilling to accept vacant jobs they consider not “good” enough. Another reason is that there is a big gap between the majors some students study in school and the demands of vacant jobs. So companies think some students are not fit for the jobs.
Solution to the problem requires efforts on both the society and the students. The companies should value the students, talent and knowledge while the latter should not merely aim at material gains. They should be down-to–earth in building up their career. Furthermore, they should face their weak points so as to improve themselves and be more competent.
范文二:
Nowadays, the employment of college students is becoming more and more of a problem. About a decade ago, university students could find satisfactory and enviable jobs after graduation, while t he things are quite different at present. In addition, according to statistics, about 30% of graduate students can’t find a job but stay at home after graduation.
Employment difficulty of college students is due to the following reasons. Among these, the increasing recruitment of colleges and universities plays a vital role. In addition, m any colleges and universities fail to adapt their courses to the development of economy.
Considering the seriousness of unemployment of college students, I think it is high time that we took effective measures to solve the problem. Above all, college students should realize their own defects and further improve themselves to keep their competitive edge in society. Moreover, colleges or universities should provide more trainings and internship opportunities before the students enter the society. Besides, college students should hold a right attitude towards jobs and set their job expectations at a suitable level. Only through these ways can the college students find a satisfactory job and have a brighter future.
G raduates’ pressure in finding jobs
Nowadays, more and more university g
raduates complain that graduation does
not equate to employment.They exper
ience great difficulties finding satisfacto
ry jobs. What is the cause of this phen
omenon
In my opinion, there are four causes:
First, graduates lack experience.They spend most of their time at schoo l studying academic subjects and lack relevant job training.Only after graduation do they realize it’s hard to find jobs.
Second, competition among graduates grows more bitter and more bitter and bitter. The supply of university graduates exceeds social demand. This results in a decreased chance for any individual graduate to find a job.
Third, some students don’t study hard. S ome of them skip classes just because they have no interest in certain subjects. Some play computer g ames or pursue other interests. Some sleep in class or in the library. T hen the y leave the sheltered environment of the university campus, to di scover they don’t have a dequate knowledge to apply for many positions, which makes them feel lost and frustrated.
Finally, some graduates are conceited.(自负)They lack experience but ask for a high salary, which is impractical.
So, university students should try their best to change this situation.Wh en they are in school, they should make the most of their time and put their heart into their studies.They can hold part-time jobs in their sp are time to accumulate relevant work experience. They should take part in some social activities and provide themselves with special training,if possible. When they graduate and apply for jobs, they should attach m ore importance to accumulating experience than to their starting salary.
On University Students’ Pressure in Finding Jobs
About a decade ago, university students c ould find satisfactory and envi able jobs after their graduation.But now, things are different. Today's university students usually have much pressure in finding fairly good jo bs.They always say disappointedly that graduation means joblessness. Why nowadays university students have so much pressure in finding job s?
In my opinion, this kind of pressure is mainly caused by three reasons. Firstly, the government is enrolling more and more university students year by year. And the growth of the students' number has surpassed th at of the need of the society. So, when so many students graduate at a time, the chance of finding jobs becomes tiny. Secondly, today's universi ty students, most of them are the "only-child", who are more mentally frail. Since they are indulged greatly at home and haven't been trained to do things on their own,once it is their turn to go out of the campu
s and find jobs by themselves and decide what kind of jobs to choose, t hey feel bewildered and don't know what to do.If their first try fails,t hey will be frustrated and think that it is really hard to find jobs.Thir dly, some university students are not qualified for good and challenging jobs. After entering the university, they don't study as hard as they di
d in high schools. They begin to sleep during th
e class or even be abse
nt for classes. Some are addicted to computer games or Jin Yong's nov els, or step into the two-person-world too early. Because these things ha
ve taken up so much of their time and energy, their study is neglected. After four years of university life, they haven't gained the knowledge t hose fairly good jobs or certain positions require.
大学生如何成功
Thousands of former high school students across the nation will begin the great journey of life by entering their first year of college. For many students, they may be the first one in their family to attend or college could be a long, planned out1 tradition. Nevertheless, there is one simple word that should sum up2 the purpose for all students entering college: SUCCESS.
College is not only the beginning of a new path into education, it is also a path to life and dreams. Throughout my life, I constantly set goals, aim high, and dream big in hopes of being a role model for others behind me. Moreover, I truly believe that every young person can be successful and do anything they dream of doing through hard work, dedication奉献, and a true spirit to succeed.
Being successful in college not only means studying, balancing a busy schedule, and working hard, but it also takes inspiration and faith to go all out and take risks! We ar e all born with natural talents and gifts that should not only be shared with friends and family, but also with the rest of the world. There has to truly be more to this life than just mediocrity4. The sooner you start realizing your dreams and goals for life, the more time you will have to spend enjoying your life.
Many young people feel as though they are restricted by their age and lack of maturity5 to do certain things, but there is no such thing as barriers; there are only road blocks, many of which we, ourselves, place in our paths to success.
Many of the world’s top com panies, such as Microsoft, Dell, Apple, Kinko’s, and many more were started by college kids. It takes time and perseverance to achieve your goals and dreams, which is why it is so vital to start now, rather than later.
You should live each day as if it were the last and use every second to your advantage. T hat means setting goals, being involved on campus and in your community, working hard, and most importantly, never giving up! Do not be afraid to know who you are, what you are capable of achieving, and figure out your likes and dislikes, because by doing so you will make yourself an even more stronger and visionary6 person and leader.
What is success?
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed10 social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived;
That is to have succeeded. YOU HAVE THE POWER!。
