It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers(生产商) follow certain uniform standards for various features(特征) of clothes. What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men. Take a look at the way your clothes button. Men's clothes tend to button from the right, and women's from the left. Considering most of the world's population----men and women----are right-handed, the men's standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do women's clothes button from the left? History really seems to matter here. Buttons first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-handed servants, having women's shirts button from the left would be easier. On the other hand, having men's shirts button from the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hand would be less likely to get caught in the shirt. Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning from the left is still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all women's shirts buttoned from the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer women's shirts that buttoned from the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. Besides, some women might have found it socially awkward to appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe they were wearing men's shirts.

( ) 3. Women's clothes still button from the left today because.

Art museums are places where people can learn about various cultures. The increasingly popular "design museums" that are opening today, however, perform quite a different role. Unlike most art museums, the design museum shows objects that are easily found by the general public These museums sometimes even place things like fridges and washing machines in the center of the hall
Pe叩le have argued that design museums are often made use of as advertisements for new industrial technology. But their role is not simply a matter of sales-it is the honoring of excellently invented products. The difference between the window of a department store and the showcase in a design museum is that the first tries to sell you something, while the second tells you the success of a sale.
One advantage of design museums is that they are places where people feel familiar with the exhihits. Unlike the average art museum visitors, design museum visitors seldom feel frightened or
puzzled. This is partly because design museums clearly show how and why mass-produced products work and look as they do, and how design has improved the quality of our lives. Art museum
exhibits, on the other hand, would most probably fill visitors with a feeling that there is something between their understanding.
In recent years, several new design museums have opened their door. Each of these museums has tried to satisfy the public’s growing interest in the field with new ideas. London's Design Museum, for example, shows a collection of mass-produced objects from Zippo lighters to electric typewriters to a group of Italian fish-tins. The choices open to design museums seem far less strict than those to art museums, and visitors may also sense the humorous part of our society while walking around such exhibits as interesting and unusually attractive toys collected in our everyday life.
47. Showcases in design museums are different from store windows because they_.
A. show more technologically advanced products
B. help increase the sales of products
C. show why the products have sold well
D. attract more people than store windows do
48. The author believes that most design museum visitors_.
A. do not admire mass-produced products
B. are puzzled with technological exhibits
C. dislike exhibits in art museums
D. know the exhibits very well
49. The choices open to design museums_
A. are not as strict as those to art museums B, are not aimed to interest the public
C. may fail to bring some pleasure to visitors
D. often contain precious exhibits
50. The best title for this passage is“_”
A. The Forms of Design Museums
B. The Exhibits of Design Museums
C. The Nature of Design Museums
D. The Choices Open to Design Museums

It is hard to imagine that such a small country, the size of Indiana with the population of Alaska, tucked in the Himalaya Mountains, accessible only by two airplanes,is the “Happiest Country’’in the world and has one of the fastest growing GDP’S in the world. This country is Bhutan,“Land of the Thunder Dragon”,which is located in South Asia and is encompassed by India,China, and Nepal.
Bhutan is the last standing Buddhist Kingdom in the World and, until recently, has preserved much of their culture since the l7th century by avoiding globalization and staying isolated from the world.Internet, television, and western dress were banned from the country up until ten years ago.Over the past ten years globalization has begun to change in Bhutan, but things remain perfectly balanced.
Bhutan is the only country in the world that has a ‘GNH’,which refers to “Gross National Happiness.’’The process of measuring GNH began when Bhutan opened up to globalization. It measures people’s quality of life, and makes sure that “material and spiritual development happen together.”Bhutan has done an amazing job of finding this balance.Bhutan has continually been ranked as the happiest country in all of Asia, and the eighth Happiest Country in the world according to Business Week.In 2007,Bhutan had the second fastest growing GDP in the world,at the same time as maintaining their environment and cultural identity.
In 2008,in Bhutan’s first democratic election,28-year-old Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wang Chuck was elected president of Bhutan. He promises to “maintain a stance (立场)of protection against the worst aspects of globalization, maintaining the ‘Gross National Happiness’.”But Jigme himself

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours(绕行路) in life than by the narrow road toward goals.I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents' home in Boise in
nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement(限制) and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky,so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to.We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb was born.He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise.I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me.My husband made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him.The kids chased him and one another. They'd get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass.Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons(见识).We eventually arrived at my parents' doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.
I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling.I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead.I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of journey—and the best part of yourself.
46.Why did the author use to take freeways to her parents' home?
A.It was less tiring.
B.It would be faster and safer.
C.Her kids would feel less confined.
D.She felt better with other drivers nearby.
47.The author stopped regularly on the country roads to ________.
A.relax in the fresh air
B.take a deep breath
C.take care of the lamb
D.let the kids play with Banner
48.What does the author discover from the trip according to Paragraph 6? A.Freeways are where beauty hides.
B.Getting close to nature adds to the joy of life.
C.Enjoying the beauty of nature benefits one's health.
D.One should follow side roads to watch wild animals.
49.Why did the author ask the kids to get out of the car on their way back home? A.To give herself some time to read.
B.To order some food for them.
C.To play a game with them.
D.To let them cool down.
50.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Charm of the Detour
B.The Road to Bravery
C.Creativity out of Necessity
D.Road Trip and Country Life

任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
How Self-Acceptance Leads to Happiness Within
Finding acceptance is a natural desire of most people. When we are young, it is important to us to be accepted by others. To do this, we will often adopt the views and interests of the others rather than develop our own.
Over time, however, we have the opportunity to learn to accept ourselves. People who have done this are confident in their true abilities; they do not feel the need to impress other people. They are concerned with whether their actions produce worthwhile results rather than with how they are seen by others.
Less confident people constantly agree with everything others suggest, for fear of having their own ideas rejected. Defensive people are also usually unconfident; in an attempt to hide their unconfidence, they blame others.
Confident people do not give up when faced with a difficult situation; they say "I can" rather than "I can't." Knowing that each day is an opportunity to use their talents to acquire good health, good friendships, and great happiness, they always put their best foot forward. Gradually they can appreciate the differences between themselves and other people.
Recognizing the details that we cannot change about ourselves helps us grow personally, so why waste energy complaining about being short? Instead of focusing on personal characteristics we are not satisfied with, we ought to focus more on what we are good at.
Such expressions as "Love yourself" and "Be true to your own self" are about self-acceptance, as well as honesty and morality. We should consider them to be good advice, and treat them as signposts showing the way to happiness within.
