Sam and Pat are brothers. They are twins. They are in the same class. Sam works harder and studies better than his brother Pat. One day, the teacher asked the class to write a composition. The name of it was “My Father”. Sam wrote a composition and was ready to give it to his teacher when Pat said,“Wait a minute, Sam. Let me have a look.” Pat read it and copied it. The next day, the teacher asked Pat, “How is it that your composition is the same as Sam’s, Pat” “Because we have the same father, don’t we?” answered Pat.
Passage 2
Tom is a little boy, and he is only seven years old. One day he went to the cinema. It was the first time for him to do that. He bought a ticket and then went in. But after two or three minutes he came out, bought a second ticket and went in again. After a few minutes he came out again and bought a third ticket. Two or three minutes later he came out and asked for another ticket. Then the girl in the ticket office asked him, “why do you buy so many tickets? How many fri ends do you meet?” Tom answered, “No, I have no friend here. But a big boy always stops me at the door and tears my ticket to pieces.”
Passage 3
American schools begin in September after a long summer holiday. There are two terms in a school year. The first term is from September to January, and the second is from February to June. Most American children begin to go to school when they are five years old. Most students are seventeen or eighteen years old when they finish high school.
High school students take only four or five subjects each term. They usually go to the same classes very day, and they have homework for every class. After class they do many interesting things.
After high school, many students go to college. They can go to a small one or a large one. They usually have to give a lot of money. So many college students work after class to get the money for their studies.
Passage 4
Small talk is a good way to kill time and make friends. If you travel to other countries, what do you say to start small talk with local people?
In Britain, the best topic is the weather. British weather changes quite often. It’s also a safe topic. You can start small talk simply by saying“It’s a lovely day today, isn’t it?”
Besides weather, it’s good to talk about gardens with Brits. For example, you could say,“Those roses look really beautiful, don’t they?” English people love their pets. So it’s also nice to start with “What a lovely dog! What is his name?”
In America people like to talk about sports, such as American football. They also talk about clothes by saying “It’s a nice shirt! Where did you get it?” Weather is a safe topic there, too.
Of course, there are also a lot of topics to avoid during small talk in Western countries.
Don’t ask people“How old are you?” Age, especially for women, is usually a secret. Never ask“How much money do you make?” It makes people uncomfortable.
Don’t ask st rangers whether they are married, have a girlfriend or boyfriend. Politics or religion is not a good topic for two people who have just met either.

W:I see. Thank you.
Conversation Two
W: You are Mick Redmond, aren’t you? My name is Officer Win. May I ask you some questions, Mr. Redmond?
M: If you want, Officer.
W: Mr. Crane died at 6 last night. Where were you from five to six?
M: At home, watching TV. Why? Mr. C rane hit his head on the bed, didn’t he? That’s what the newspaper said.
W: Yes, that’s what the newspaper said. But I’m afraid that someone hit Mr. Crane on the head with a stone. So, Mr. Redmond, tell me. Who were you with while you were watching TV?
M:I was with Wendy, my girlfriend.
W: Were you and Mr. Crane friends?
M: Oh sure. We have been friends for about six years. He and my brother Tim used to play chess together.
W: Hm. That’s interesting.
Conversation Three
W: Good morning, Mr. Wang. I’m very sorry I’m late.
M: You’re late every morning, Miss Liu. You were late Tuesday, yesterday…Don’t you have a watch?
W: Yes, but it wasn’t my mistake. I stood in the rain for an hour this morning. I waited and waited for a bus, and then when one came, it was full.
M: How about yesterday and the day before yesterday?
W: Well, I came by taxi yesterday and …
M: And you were still late! And Tuesday?
W: Tuesday I went to see the doctor and I sat in his chair for about two hours. It was really bad!
M: And tomorrow, Miss Liu?
Conversation Four
W: Officer! Officer!
M: Yes, madam.
W: Somebody just took my purse! Everything’s gone!
M: Just calm down a minute…OK. Now what did the person look like?
W: He was tall.
M: About how tall was he?
W: About 1.75m.
M: And how old was he?
W: Oh, he was quite young. I think…sixteen or seventeen.
M: Do you know how roughly, how heavy he was?
W: Oh, he was 70 kilos, I guess.
M: And what color was his hair?
W: Brown, and it was long.
M: What was he wearing?
W: Jeans and a T-shirt.
M: Fine, and now tell me about your purse. What did it look like?
W: Well, it was dark brown. It’s made of leather.
M:OK, now I’ll need your name and address.

Passage One
Hi, everybody! My name is John. I stu dy in Grade 8 at Woodland School near London. I didn’t know how to do things for myself before I came to this school. Now I even know how to cook healthy and delicious meals.
Our school has a reading week in October every year. My classmates and I love it. We can read many books and magazines from home but we have to tell our English teacher what we are reading. Near the end of each class we can talk to our friends about our books. The reading week is always too short because we want to read all our friend s’ books, too.
Passage Two
In the year 2050, there will be different kinds of materials for clothes. Special chemicals will make the clothes stay clean—they never get dirty, and they’ll never smell. We will have less work because we won’t have to wash them. We’ll save water and money. We won’t worry about what to wear to school every day. Children won’t go to school. They’ll stay home in front of their computers. Children can wear their favorite “Saturday” clothes every day. It will be fun. What do you thin k? Do you think it will be fun? What do you think school clothes and school life will be like in 2050?

Passage One
In America, each student works as hard as he or she can in high school. If they don’t work hard enough to get good grades, they will not pass the important exams. If they fail those exams, they will not get into the college they want to. On the other hand, in high school they have more time to do things than
in college. Many students join hobby groups. Some students go in for sports such as soccer, baseball or basketball. Nearly all high schools have sports teams. Also students usually get their first jobs when they are in high school, though the jobs aren’t very good. For example, some students work at fast food restaurants. In American high schools, fashion is very important .If you don’t have the newest or coolest clothes as those who already have them, they will think you are not cool.
Passage Two
There have been a lot of changes since World WarⅡ.But perhaps the biggest change is the telephone. People no longer write letters to one another. They pick up the telephone. Every house has at least two, sometimes three, four or five telephones. Every office has many telephones. There are more telephones than people in America. My little house has three telephones, one upstairs, one in the kitchen, and one downstairs. In the morning the first thing that wakes me up is my telephone ring. Long distance telephone calls are very cheap before seven o’cloc k in the morning. So my friends in Boston telephones me to say “Good morning” It depends what’s up. If you never want to write a letter, you simply pick up the telephone and say what you want to say.
