Huron, Ohio, was where I’d spent my twenties, working on a steamer out on the Great Lakes. My wife and I started our family there, and later we came back to Huron to retire. Then, during the final stage of construction on our new home, I had difficulty breathing. The doctor determined I needed open-heart surgery. I was admitted to a hospital in Sandusky.
The night before my surgery, I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep. I la y in my hospital bed praying and thinking about the events in my life that had led me to this point. I remembered how I had fallen in love with Huron and its people. I remembered a Christmas many years ago…
The shipping season had been good to me, so that winter I decided to buy some Christmas gifts and help out a family in town. “I know a family that would appreciate a visit from Santa Claus,” the owner of the store said. “A woman with six children just lost her husband.”
The store owner helped me wrap som e presents and gave me the family’s address. That evening I delivered the packages. A little girl with brown eyes and the sweetest smile answered the door. “Santa asked me to bring these gifts to you and your family,” I said.
The girl’s eyes lit up even more. “Tell Santa ‘thank you’ from Dorothy,” she said. I never saw her or her family
again, but all in town helped give Huron a permanent place in my heart. A heart now needed fixing badly.
A nurse came in to check on me. “Where are you from?” the nurse asked. “I’m from Huron,” I told her proudly.
She smiled. “I grew up there,” she said. “I loved it, even though life wasn’t easy. You see, I lost my father when I was just a child.”
I looked into her brown eyes and knew I’d seen them before. “Do you recall a sa ilor bringing presents to your door one Christmas?”
She stared. “That was you!”
“Yes, Dorothy,” I said, suddenly confident about my surgery. “That was me.”

For most people, having property stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admits when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon enough, his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to compassion instead.
As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the pickings slim. The scarcity in stock got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his had done so because he truly needed transportation to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. Pruitt put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair again for free and then donate to folks who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike outright.

Kieran Moise, 18, started growing out his hair in the eighth grade, after losing a friend to brain cancer. He had
seen people donate their hair to children who had lost theirs during medical treatment and wanted to do same.
“Kieran has always been known for his hair. It was a big part of his personality and who he was,” said his mother, Kelly Moise. “But he has always been the most compassionate and caring person. Since he was 6 years old, he somehow had the mindset of raising money and giving it to people who need it, and that never changed.”
In May, Moise graduated from high school with an impressive 19-inch Afro (非洲发式). But with him set to enter the U.S. Air Force Academy, it was finally time for the big cut.
To maximize his impact, Moise organized a live event at a local brewery in Huntsville and an online fundraising campaign called “Kieran’s Curls for Cancer”, where he aimed to raise $1,000 per inch cut.
On May 29, nearly 100 people attended the event, where they watched Moise get his hair braided and snipped off. His hair was donated to Children With Hair Loss, a non-profit organization in Michigan that makes free wigs for kids and young adults facing medically related hair loss.
By the end of the day, the event raised $20,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has continued to raise money online. As of Saturday, it was more than $39,000.

Jude and Leo Hawes have come a long way since they entered the world, born at just 29weeks. Airlifted from their home in Launceston to hospital in Hobart, the twins, now happy and healthy two-year-olds, were delivered into the ICU to be cared for and monitored. A gift from the Tasmanian branch of Octopus for a Preemie (早产儿) for them was a light in the dark.
“These stories really do remind us why we all spend so much time and our own money making these octopuses (章鱼),” Bianca, the co-founder of the project, tells Woman’s Day. “It means the world to me t hat I can do something in whatever small way to make the journey for the babies and parents just that little bit easier. I believe if we can help others, no matter how small a way it is, then we should.”
The eight-legged creatures are specially created to calm and comfort early newborns.“In instances where the babies can’t be held for weeks, or even months, the familiarity of the parents’ scent (气味) on the octopuses can help with the bonding process because babies already know it as a safe scent when parents can finally hold them,”Bianca says.
The volunteer project began after a nurse reached out to Bianca to create a prototype of octopus she could take into hospital for a trial.
“It took me a good four to five months to teach myself how to write a pattern and get it approved,”explains Bianca, who creates the handmade helpful octopuses for no cost to families in need.
“I started making them as fast as I could, but I wasn’t able to make the amount they needed.” Soon Bianca met the group’s other co-founder Andrea Carey and the pair started creating the creatures in together in their spare time.。
